Neat product, reliable. Does not really fit what I am looking for in a car though...

Also nice to see these people gain market share. Subaru and Mazda seem to be the best of the Asians in terms of product.

Yes, the two smaller guys have nicer product than the bigger guys.  With the new Legacy, sales should go up even more.

Before I bought my VW, I test drove an XV Crosstrek with manual.  I went in expecting to love it... a practical hatch with good fuel mileage, AWD and a manual.  But I just couldn't get into it.  I thought it rode rougher than my Patriot, and I was constantly looking for another gear.  Oh well.

The local news here was talking about how some companies are surging in the 21st century and others seem to be faltering. The news reporter speculated that Mazda and Subaru would be consumed by some bigger company in the next 5 years and that VW who is seeing terrible sales here will either pull out of this country to survive or end up going bankrupt. I had to laugh as he clearly does not know the companies. The only part I would agree with him on was that I still expect merges as we narrow down car companies. Still far more than the world can support.

VW is the most profitable auto company in the world...I doubt they will pull out of north America.

Agreed.  VW brand itself is not very profitable, but they have serious cash cow brands in Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti.

They are profitable with VW in China and South America. They need to keep the north American market for brand image and supplier volume even if it is never highly profitable.
