While the spotlight has been on crossovers and their upcoming EV, Jaguar is still committed to building sports cars. “The F-Type has been a huge success. We love sports cars – and I use the plural quite deliberately. Whether that is delivered by a body variant or something else remains to be seen, but for now let’s just say that the body type is very important for us,” said Hanno Kirner, the person overseeing product strategy at Jaguar Land Rover. Emphasis mine. Jaguar only has one sports car at the moment - the F-Type. But according to Autocar, a second coupe being the successor to the XK (departed Jaguar's lineup in 2014). Some of their evidence comes from comments made by Jaguar’s head of design, Ian Callum last year. “I want a two-seater [the F-Type] and a 2+2. We’re working on something now. There’s nothing approved, but we instigate in design.” Reportedly, Callum's team completed a design concept for an XK replacement but was scrapped when Jaguar killed the XK. Autocar says this new successor to the XK isn't expected until after 2021. Part of this comes down to a new modular platform that is currently being worked on and will debut on the next-generation F-Type - due in 2019. This new platform is reportedly flexible enough to do a 2+2 coupe. Jaguar's Ingenium engine family will provide power for both models and expect some hot versions, including an SVR variant down the road. There is also talk about electrification, but that appears to be a long way out. Source: Autocar

What does the future of Jaguar's lineup look like? According to Automobile Magazine, expect EVs and no replacement for the XK Coupe and Convertible. Let's begin with the EVs. First up is a replacement for the XJ known under the codename of X590. The report says X590 will be a four-door coupe with a liftback (something like an Audi A7). This is a compromise between infighting with Jaguar Land Rover boss Ralf Speth (wanted a three-box design to replace the XJ) and Jaguar design chief Ian Callum (wanted a big coupe). The underpinnings is a new architecture that is capable of handling the hardware needed for autonomous technologies. All-wheel drive will come standard. The plan is to have X590 possibly launch in 2018, beating models that are expected from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. While Jaguar hopes this model is a success, the current XJ will be sold alongside it for a time in case it flops. (Secretly, we're hoping there is a new XJ coming as well.) Following a year later will be an electric SUV. Now this isn't an electrified version of the F-Pace. According to the report, this model was originally going to be a Range Rover before becoming a Jaguar. “Although it looks sleek, modern and aerodynamically efficient, this model will be rated as an SUV in North-America. All the SUV-defining hard points are there in place,” said a source about the design. This model will be offered with the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and three different battery packs. The plan is to build around 20,000 to 30,000 X590s, and 30,000 to 50,000 of the new SUV. We should also mention the replacement for the XK has canceled, most likely due to Jaguar's electric ambitions. We know the replacement would have used a stretched version of the F-Type's platform. During this summer, Jaguar will quietly say good-bye to the XK Coupe and Convertible. The company says poor sales and the introduction of the F-Type has made the company decide the XK needs to hit the road. That doesn't mean Jaguar isn't working on a replacement though. Auto Express reports that Jaguar is working on a new 2+2 grand tourer to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Bentley Continental GT. The new coupe, wearing the XJ nameplate, will feature certain design cues from the F-Type such as flowing lines, muscular rear wheel arches, and wraparound taillights. But the coupe will have a few of its own touches like an oversized grille and horizontal headlights. The new coupe will use a lengthened version of the F-Type's platform and have a range of supercharged V6 and V8 engines, and a diesel engine. The coupe is not expected to arrive till sometime after 2017 or so. Source: Auto Express

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 31, 2012 The Jaguar XK has had to fill two roles in the Jaguar lineup; a sports car and a grand tourer. But with the introduction of the new F-Type taking the role of the sports car, the XK could be heading in another direction. Speaking with Autocar, Jaguar's design director Ian Callum said that the company was “going through a lot of discussion” about where to take the XK in the future. “It could grow into the luxury market, and grow in size. Whether it stays the same as a two-plus-two or becomes a two-plus-more-than-two has not been committed to yet,” said Callum. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 17, 2012 Jaguar is in the midst of changes. Both with one of their models and the possibility of moving more upmarket. Inside Line reports that Jaguar is debating where to take the next-generation XJ. One side, headed by CEO Ralf Speth wants to take the next-generation XJ and design it much closer to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The other side wants to see Jaguar stick with the distinctive styling theme of the current model. Why the design change-up? Sales in key markets for the XJ have been dropping. In the U.S. alone, sales are about half when compared to the S-Class and BMW 7-Series. Though we're wondering if the sales drop is due to the design or other reasons, like not offering AWD or some other powertrain choice than a V8. Source: Inside Line Next: Going Upmarket Jaguar has been impressed by the sales of the XKR-S coupe and roadster, and the XJ Ultimate that the brand is looking at doing more upmarket models. “It’s clear from our research that Jaguar has a strong enough brand name to participate in more of this sort of business. We’ve proven that we can build £100,000-plus cars that sell, and these projects are one way of pushing the brand further upmarket,” said global brand director Adrian Hallmark. Hallmark didn't go into specifics, but it would be safe to assume a high-performance variant of the XFR is in the cards. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears.
