BMW is very proud of their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant; currently home to the X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. So it comes as no surprise that company chose Spartanburg to debut the third-generation X3 crossover. Styling-wise, the 2018 X3 is an evolution of the current model. There are some changes to help set the new X3 apart from the old model such as a more aggressive front bumper, new take on the kidney grille, slimmer taillights, and twin exhaust tips. The wheelbase has been extended by 2.2-inches, helping balance out the X3's proportions. The interior is a mix of the current X3 and new 5-Series. There is still a driver-focused dash layout with the angled center stack. The control layout for the climate control and radio is similar to what you will find in the recently redesigned 5-Series. An optional 10.25-inch screen sits on top of the dash and comes with the latest version of BMW's iDrive system. There are two engines available for the X3; a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (xDrive30i) and a turbocharged 3.0L inline with 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque (M40i). Both will come paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The M40i gets some other performance goodies such larger brakes, retuned suspension, dual-mode exhaust, and a launch mode. First launched with the BMW 5 Series, the new On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) service available in select cities helps alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for parking spaces – which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in city centers. OSPI works in a similar way to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information System, using historical and current data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of on-street parking spaces in specific zones or in a particular part of town. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 12, 2012 I'm sure all of us were thinking, "You know what would make BMW's lineup perfect? A smaller X6." Well as we have been reporting for the past year, BMW has been working on a smaller X6, tentatively called the X4. According to Autoweek, BMW could be showing the new X4 at next year's Detroit Auto Show. The X4 would carry the same coupe-like styling as the X6, while using the X3's platform as a base. Within the next two years, BMW's crossover lineup will undergo a massive change with two key models undergoing a redesign and two new models joining the family. Australian outlet Motoring has learned some key details about the models in question and possible debuts. X2: Think X1 in a sleeker package. Previewed last year at the Paris Motor Show, the X2 will come with a range of three and four-cylinder engines. Drivetrain choices will include front or all-wheel drive. It is expected to launch sometime early next year. X3: One of BMW's most popular models, the next-generation model is expected to go on sale in Europe sometime later this year with other markets to follow. It will use the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform that underpins the 5 and 7-Series. Expect a range of four and six-cylinder engines. X5: The X5 is a big seller in key markets and BMW has reportedly fast-tracked the replacement to go into production beginning in late 2018. It will also use the CLAR platform. X7: BMW's new flagship SUV and challenger to the likes of Mercedes' GLS. It will also use the CLAR platform and feature a range of engines including six, eight, and even a V12 option. BMW Group U.S. Reports February 2016 Sales BMW brand sales decrease 10.7 percent MINI brand sales decrease 23.7 percent Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 1, 2016… Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 10.7 percent in February for a total of 22,498 compared to 25,201 vehicles sold in February, 2015. Year-to-date, BMW brand is down 8.2 percent from the same period last year with sales of 40,580 vehicles. Notable vehicle sales include the BMW X1 which increased 60.2 percent, the BMW X3 which increased by 19.5 percent, and the BMW 2 Series which increased by 107.5 percent. “February showed again the accelerating pace of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles is clearly more than a trend with our X models accounting for 45% of sales this past month,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “With Spring only three weeks away and the travel season on the horizon, the growing success of the 7 Series and the 2 Series also makes us confident there’s more to come.” BMW Group Sales In total, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported February sales of 25,337 vehicles, a decrease of 12.4 percent from the 28,921 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group sales are down 8.7 percent from the same period last year with 46,657 vehicles sold. MINI Brand Sales For February, MINI USA reports 2,839 automobiles sold, a decrease of 23.7 percent from the 3,720 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA sales are 6,077 vehicles, a 12.5 percent decrease from the same period last year.

New compact luxury crossovers are being introduced apace, with strong-selling models like the Lexus NX and the Lincoln MKC claiming large slices of a pie once carved up almost exclusively by Acura, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The picture shows what BMW might have planned for diesels in the U.S. in next couple of years. Starting next year, the 3-Series sedan will bring back a diesel option in the first quarter. The second quarter BMW will introduce the 3-Series wagon with a diesel. In the third quarter, the 5-Series diesel will come out and will be followed by the new X5 diesel at the end of the year. For 2014, the 7-Series and X3 join in on the diesel fun. What engines are in play with this plan? We know that a single-turbo 2.0L four-cylinder and a twin-turbo, 3.0L diesel inline-six are the two engines destined for the U.S. Car and Driver speculates the four-cylinder will go into the 3-Series, X3, and 5-Series, while the 7-Series and X5 go with the six.
