  1. G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com 2016 J.D. Powers VDS SUVs JD powers has their 2016 vehicle dependability study out. VDS Study You can review it for all other segments, but being a dedicated SUV / CUV buyer, I was curious to know after 3 years who was top dog. Small SUV - Buick Encore Compact SUV - Chevrolet Equinox Compact Premium SUV - Mercedes-Benz GLK Midsize SUV - Nissan Murano Midsize Premium SUV - Lexus GX Large SUV - GMC Yukon I have to say that having 3 of the 6 segments covered by a GM product is pretty damn impressive!
  2. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Are These The Most Reliable Top 10 Brands? This morning Yahoo posted the following story, "The 10 Most Reliable Car Brands, From A Car Dealer's View". The author goes on to talk about the various tag lines the brands have used and whether they actually lived up to the marketing hype of being the best. The author goes on to state that being an owner of a car dealership, auctioneer and co-owner of an auto auction for the last 16 years has given him the insight to state what he sees as the most reliable top 10 brands. The author then goes on to state that this is based on the last two and half years of looking at 700,000 auto trade-ins an the inspection process on the state of the auto at trade-in and tracking the sever mechanical issues of each brand. This individual also goes on to state the most studies are 90 days and this is then used to give early recommendations that are used for 3 to 5 years and yet never shows that some auto's become a Money Pit. There is plenty of additional information and I have to say it is a good read that deserves for anyone who likes more than surface information to take a look at. Make sure to follow the various links also to see some surprising and not surprising information that proves you can sell junk with the right marketing message. Top 10 Most Reliable Brands from Lowest to #1 10th place - Mercedes-Benz 9th place - Scion 8th place - Mitsubishi 7th place - Acura 6th place - Chevrolet 5th place - Infinite 4th place - Honda 3rd place - GMC 2nd place - Lexus 1st Place - Toyota So I invite you all to take a look at the details and think about what is your top 10 most Reliable Brands? Do you agree with this or not, Do you feel the methodology is valid or should there be something better to measure quality in a product? Sound Off!
  3. CNBC just posted this story that looks at facts gathered from quality studies and came to the conclusion that while Japan is not getting worse parse, they have fallen behind the competition in consumer surveys. Seems Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and Subaru are not keeping pace with the industry and Korea has surpased them. According to the report, the average world wide is a 3% improvement in product quality. Japan has had a zero improvement rate for the last few years where as Korea had an 11% product quality improvement over last year leading the over all industry. Interesting is that Ford and Lincoln are mentioned for cutting the number of problems only and GM and Buick not only cut problems further but placed vehicles in the top 11 brands and for the past year showed fewer than 100 problems per 100 auto's built leading the industry. The story goes on to say this will have many ask if Japan has lost the considered GOLD standard of auto reliability. The final comment is that Japan is struggling in dealing with infotainment systems and voice recognition as 16 of the bottom 20 models are all from Japan and have their core problems rooted in the Infotainment / nav / voice recognition systems. 4. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Top 10 Least Reliable Cars Consumers Report published their annual best and worst reliable cars. If your wanting to look at the best go here Reliable Cars. For this story, you could watch the videos and dive through the mountain of spreadsheets that consumers reports has for their data, but MSN Auto helped out by focusing on the top 10 least reliable cars and here is their list. The predicted reliability score was 125% below that of the average car. #1 - Scion xB 125% below the average auto #2 - Mercedes-Benz S-Class 127% below average #3 - Infiniti Q50 127% below average #4 - Jeep Grand Cherokee (Diesel) 134% below average #5 - Dodge Dart 140% below average #6 - Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T 143% below average #7 - Nissan Pathfinder 154% below average #8 - Ford Fiesta 162% below average #9 - Jeep Cherokee (4-cyl) 176% below average #10 - Fiat 500L 219% below average The issues seem to be focused on either the power train, suspension such as the active system in the S-Class from Mercedes-Benz or electrical. The one area that no car seemed to really have issues with is the body / paint jobs. So the question to be asked here is as follows: Are we building auto's to complex for our own good? Do we really need all these electronics in an auto? Do we really need all the sophisticated power train variables? Would it be better to focus on a more radical jump in autos by setting a dead line to move away from fossil fuel auto's to EV or Hydrogen? The questions can be endless and I hope this gets you to start thinking about what is important to you. One thing is for sure, some of these auto's will not be on my list for shopping, others would be such as the Cheverolet Cruze which got knocked for drive shaft / axel seals and GM has addressed this according to GM's web site. What are your thoughts on this list? Is it right or is Consumers reports to critical?
