Volkswagen unveiled an updated 2021 Arteon tonight. Now you might be thinking this is a quick turn around as the Arteon has been on sale in the U.S. for only a year. But you need to keep in mind that Volkswagen has been selling the Arteon in Europe since 2018, so a refresh was in the cards. Changes for the exterior are subtile with a more prominent grille, new lighting, updated Volkswagen badging, and new choices for paint and wheels. The interior is a bit more dramatic with updated dash featuring revised air vents and climate control system with touch controls. A new steering wheel with touch controls, improved materials, and the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit becoming standard on all Arteons finishes off the changes. Power for the U.S. will remain the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic that routes power to either the front or Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system. There are some versions we'll be missing out on such as a new Shooting Brake (aka wagon), a 315 horsepower R model, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. No word on pricing, but you'll be able to pick up a 2021 Arteon at your Volkswagen dealer sometime in November. Source: Volkswagen Press Release is on Page 2 2021 Volkswagen Arteon world premiere Jun 23, 2020 Brand halo is updated inside and out—a new front end impresses with sharpened design elements and available illuminated grille, while inside, a new cockpit offers greater levels of refinement Digital Cockpit standard across lineup European offering includes new Arteon Shooting Brake, as well as plug-in hybrid (160 kW / 218 PS) and Volkswagen R-developed performance (235 kW / 320 PS) powertrains Herndon, VA — The Arteon is Volkswagen’s Gran Turismo—marrying the sleek design of a premium coupe to the space of a midsize sedan. For 2021, Volkswagen is introducing an extensive product line update to the brand halo, including sharpened design elements, interior refinements, and intelligent comfort systems. In Europe, Volkswagen is enhancing the product line with a second version—the new Arteon Shooting Brake—alongside new powertrain options including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain generating 160 kW (218 PS) and Arteon R versions with 235 kW (320 PS). For 2021, the U.S. market Volkswagen Arteon features a simplified trim lineup—SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Exterior The refreshed Arteon features a refined front end with sharpened design elements. The long, wide hood stretches across the entire front profile to the wheelarches to form the shoulder section. At the front it reaches far down into the grille, emphasizing the ample width of the Arteon with its crossbars. It’s not just avant-garde, it’s also aerodynamic—with a drag coefficient of a mere 0.265. For the first time, the Arteon can also be configured with an illuminated grille. On midrange models, new LED daytime running lights (DRLs) connect to form a central light bar in the grille, surrounding the new Volkswagen logo and using light as the new chrome. Consequently, the Arteon has been given a new and unmistakable daytime and night-time lighting signature. The lower section of the front profile, the front apron, has also been modified. Up to now, this area featured four chrome bars. These have now been transformed into three significantly more striking chrome bars. The outer and bottom segments of the front apron are always the same color as the vehicle’s paintwork (except the lateral air intake grilles). How the equipment scopes differ: the SE trim now has two additional, separate air intake openings in front of the front wheels, as well as a chrome bar that has been integrated above the front spoiler. In contrast, the R-Line features one larger, continuous, bottom air intake above the front spoiler that is surrounded by a C-shaped section on the outside in front of the front wheels, which has been painted in the main vehicle color. As drawn, the character line runs around the entire car. It visually presses the body’s volume downward to the ground, giving it a dynamic appearance. The character line starts in the radiator grille at the front and runs smoothly across the silhouette up to the tail light clusters. At the rear it transforms into a sharp undercut that visually reduces the Arteon’s height and carries the strong shoulder section towards the rear. At the rear, the VW badge and Arteon lettering have been redesigned. Three new colors are added for model year 2021—Oryx White, Kings Red Metallic, and Lapiz Blue. Interior On the inside, Arteon has been equipped with a redesigned cockpit that has been refined to match the model’s exclusive nature. Volkswagen’s interior designers have redesigned the entire dash panel—consisting of surfaces, air outlets, and trims—the center console, including infotainment section and air-conditioning control, and the top sections of the door trims. The fabrics and leather in the vehicle interior have also been upgraded. At the dash panel’s top-most level, new leatherette surfaces stand out by having been refined are more pronounced with decorative seams to visually build a bridge to Volkswagen’s luxury-class SUV, the Touareg. On the second level, new aluminum décor graces base models, while midrange models offer translucent aluminum décor with 30-color ambient lighting The air outlets, stretching up to the third dash panel level, have been redesigned and also fully integrated here. A new generation of multifunction steering wheels featuring digital touch surfaces are used in the Arteon. In combination with the Travel Assist system (see below), the steering wheel rim additionally features touch-sensitive surfaces which, once Travel Assist has been activated, detect whether the driver has at least one hand on the steering wheel for safety reasons. The temperature can now be set intuitively via a touchslider for the optional three-zone Climatronic® automatic climate control. The same applies to the blower function in the manual mode. Seat heating, windscreen and window defrosting functions as well as other air conditioner regulations are also controlled using new touch-sensitive surfaces in the center console. The Arteon is equipped with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which allows the driver to configure the instrument display. The graphics of the 10.25-inch display are clear and of a high quality. The driver can quickly and easily switch between three basic layouts using a View button on the multifunction steering wheel. Arteon adopts the all-new MIB3 infotainment system, integrated in a clearly visible and easy-to-reach position above the new air-conditioning controls. All models come standard with the 8.0-inch Discover Media system with navigation. MIB3 offers natural voice control, multi-phone pairing that can easily switch between devices, and wireless App-Connect. Wireless charging is also new for 2021. Volkswagen is also offering a newly developed, high-end sound system made by audio specialists harman/kardon for the very first time. It has been specifically geared towards the Arteon product line. The system uses a 700-watt, 16-channel Ethernet amplifier to power a total of twelve high-performance loudspeakers. One loudspeaker acts as the center speaker in the newly designed dash panel while another operates as a subwoofer in the trunk. The remaining treble, mid-range, and bass loudspeakers have been arranged in the doors. The infotainment system coordinates the individual sound control of the harman/kardon sound system which also provides pre-configured settings, such as Pure, Chill out, Live and Energy. Powertrain The Arteon is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® engine, making 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The power is taken to the front wheels via a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® shifting; 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on SEL R-Line models and standard on SEL Premium R-Line models.

GMC had a hit on their hand when they introduced the GMC Canyon for the 2015 model year, but they've not done a lot to refresh the truck visually since then. Six years is a long time for a truck to go without a refresh, but in 2021 the Canyon will get one. In addition to the visual refresh, the Canyon is getting a new AT4 trim line like that of its big brother the Sierra. The AT4 designation brings new 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires on 17-inch aluminum wheels, an off-road tuned suspension with advanced hill descent control system, four-wheel drive standard along with a G80 rear automatic locking differential, and a transfer case skid plate. Visually, the grille is larger and there are now red recovery hooks. The seats have Kalahari stitching in AT4 headrest embroidery. The Denali is also getting some upgrades. The grille has been updated with a more sculpted and layered pattern. Chrome assist steps are standard along with a swath of other chrome accents. It is equipped with 20-inch diamond cut wheels and the look has been updated to match the Sierra. Inside there is now open-pore ash wood trim, aluminum trim, unique stitching, and a new cocoa/dark atmosphere color theme. Heated/Cooled seats and a heated steering wheel are standard. Both trims come standard with the 308 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 or the 2.8-liter diesel with 369 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Canyon will go on sale later this year. View full article

Fiat's future is uncertain in North America as the brand struggles to find sales. Already, the Fiat 500 has been dropped from the lineup in North America, and that was one of the better sellers. The Fiat 500X is more of a crossover hatchback. It shares its platform with the fantastically more popular Jeep Renegade. Still, even in spite of its sales troubles, Fiat is releasing a refresh of the 500X Sport for 2020. The new 500x Sport gets new front and rear fascia designs, a black roof option, dark finished headliner and pillars, new sport seating, an updated version of uConnect with a 7-inch display including navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A new exterior color "Rovente Red" is being added. The 500X Sport is powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged MultiAir III engine. The engine produces 177 horsepower and an impressive 210 lb.-ft of torque while also delivering 30 mpg highway. Fiat points out that this is the only car in the class to have AWD standard and also get 30 mpg highway. The 2020 Fiat 500X Sport starts at $26,895 before destination charges and will be available in the first quarter of 2020.

Cadillac's XT5 is getting a refresh for 2020 that brings it into alignment with the looks of the rest of the brand like the recently introduced CT4 and CT5. The base trim for XT5 is the Luxury model. From there, Cadillac uses a "Y" strategy and splits the upper trims into Sport and Premium Luxury. Either can also be equipped with a Platinum package for the best technology and interior available in XT5. Premium Luxury puts an emphasis on brighter trims while the Sport takes a darker, more aggressive stance. Luxury and Premium Luxury are tuned more towards the soft side while Sport models get a more performance tuned chassis and quicker steering control. The Sport model gets a standard dual-clutch AWD system, Active Yaw control, and Continuous Damping Control adaptive suspension. LED headlamps with IntelliBeam are now standard on all models. Inside, the XT5 gets the latest version of Cadillac CUE (which they are no longer calling CUE), with more connectivity and personalization. This can be controlled either by touch or by a rotary controller in the center console. Drivers can easily pair their phone using NFC technology. Two new high-def instrument cluster options are now available. Under the hood, a new base engine takes up residence. The 2.0T with 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque that are in the XT4 and CT4 is now mated to a nine-speed automatic. The 3.6L V6 with 310 horsepower is still available, now also upgraded to the 9-speed auto. Both engines have active fuel management and automatic start/stop to boost efficiency. XT5s with the 2.0T will have a new electronic braking control system that replaces the conventional vacuum assisted power brakes. A compact electric motor replaces the traditional vacuum booster to reduce parasitic engine drag. The 2020 Cadillac XT5 will arrive later this summer. View full article

Ahead of the Geneva Auto Show next week, Mercedes-Benz has released details of the refreshed 2020 GLC crossover. There are three primary upgrades to the 2020 GLC, a new engine, a new infotainment interface, and new safety systems. Visually, the 2020 GLC carries over with just mild embellishments to the grille and trim. Two new shades of grey, Graphite Grey and Selenite Grey Magno, and new wheel designs are available. The headlights are smaller and offer an available active curve illumination and adaptive highbeam assist. The interior carries over as well with the addition of two new wood trims. The 2020 GLC comes with a new 2.0 turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This new engine has a reduction in CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption. Torque remains the same as the outgoing engine while horsepower increases by 14. Power is routed through a 9-speed automatic transmission to either the rear or all wheels. MBUX is Mercedes' new infotainment system interface and for 2020 it comes to the GLC. The system allows for touch, voice, or gesture control. Information is shown on two displays, an infotainment display on the center stack measuring 10.25 inches and an optional 12.3 inch gauge cluster. A camera located in the cabin can monitor hand movements of the driver. The driver can gesture to turn on or off the cabin lights or activate a specific function of the infotainment system. Voice control is revised to feel more natural and can be activated with the command "Hey Mercedes". Mercedes added a number of new or updated safety systems to the 2020 GLC. Available safety packages include: Active Distance Assist Distronic includes braking for stationary vehicles and expanded automatic restart in a traffic jam that also works with the Active Parking Assist and the navigation system. Active Steering Assist includes Active Emergency Stop Assist with automatic unlocking and automatic emergency calling after a vehicle comes to a stop if the driver is unresponsive while Active Steering Assist is active. Active Lane Change Assist works with the navigation system. Active Speed Limit Assist will respond to a change in speed limit when observed by traffic sign assist. Route-Based Speed Adaptation will adjust speed ahead of bends, traffic circles, toll plazas, making a turn, exiting a highway, or if the navigation system reports a traffic jam ahead. Other functions in this package include Evasive Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic, and Pre-Safe Plus. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC makes its debut at the Geneva Auto Show next week and will go on sale in the U.S. in last 2019. Overall, the GLC better demonstrates how brand safety and intelligent adaptability can effortlessly and elegantly be combined to achieve great success. With its distinctive appearance, new operating system, innovative driver assistance systems and a new, enhanced engine, the GLC offers the best from the world of Mercedes-Benz. The exterior design captivates with its wide and sporty visual appearance. Muscularly sculpted surfaces and distinctive details such as the chrome elements, which now run from the front to the rear end, the redesigned headlamps and the heavily contoured radiator grille ensure a strong off-road character. The interior combines luxury and user-friendliness in an uncompromising way with a larger display. In addition, the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) multimedia system impresses with intuitive and versatile operating options such as touch and the optimized Voice Control system. The risk of potential collisions can be reduced with the help of Active Brake Assist by braking if the driver fails to see oncoming traffic. Exterior design: distinctive appearance Modernity, strength, versatility — this is what the design of the GLC embodies. The design idiom of the GLC follows the philosophy of Sensual Purity and illustrates the carefully considered interplay of aesthetics, agility and intelligence. The appearance is sportier overall with chrome elements that now run from the front to the rear end. The front-end gives an emotional impression, presence and dominance at first glance. The design is particularly memorable due to the standard LED headlamps with the torch-design Daytime Running Lamps, as well as the heavily contoured radiator grille with dynamically shaped double louvres and diamond lattice. The available paint colors now include Graphite Grey as well as Selenite Grey Magno for the first time for the GLC 300. Additionally, there are all-new wheel offerings, ranging from 18 to 20-inch designs. The AMG Line impressively emphasizes the dynamic appearance of the GLC with the chrome diamond-block grille and front bumper with an aggressive design, as well as angular exhaust tips. In addition to sport seats with high side bolsters, this design and equipment line also includes new standard 19-inch AMG Split 5-Spoke wheels as well as a new optional 20” AMG Y 5-Spoke design. The standard LED headlamps are smaller and more raked, with significantly modified contours. The torch shape of the Daytime Running Lamps hones the signature Mercedes-Benz design. The LED Intelligent Light System is optionally available featuring Active Curve Illumination and Adaptive Highbeam Assist. The athletic character continues in the rear view with a completely revised bumper and exhaust tips. The redesigned LED taillamps also ensure an unmistakable light signature – with the hallmark blocks of the Mercedes-Benz SUVs in backlit edge-light specification. All in all, the rear-end design underscores the powerful character of the GLC with the bumper, exhaust tips and the chromed skid plate sporting the typical SUV character. Interior design: intelligence meets ergonomics Refined materials, precision workmanship and flowing shapes – that is what characterizes the interior of the GLC. It is characterized by flowing surfaces in connection with clear lines and proportions. The center console features an elegant trim component that exemplifies supreme craftsmanship, which is available in two new wood trims – Natural Grain Grey Oak and Natural Grain Walnut. The multifunction steering wheel is available in two versions and has been completely revised. Its distinctive spoke design conveys an even sportier character. In addition, its operation of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® and the Touch Control Buttons for controlling the instrument cluster and the multimedia system as well as the acoustic input feedback send a clear signal pointing to the future. The user can operate the multimedia functions using single-finger and multi- touch control on the Touchpad on the center console. It serves as an alternative to Voice Control and offers the possibility to enter letters, numbers or special characters manually. The Touchpad surface not only provides clear haptic feedback, but also acoustic feedback. MBUX: intuitive operation Well thought-out, ergonomic, comfortable – these guidelines governed the advancement of the operating and display concepts used in the GLC. The focus is on the interaction with the vehicle and its functions through gestures and movements, touch or the Voice Control system. This is made possible by the latest multimedia system generation, Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which is characterized by intuitive logic and a wide range of operating functionality. Overall, the interplay of the touchscreen display, Augmented Video for Navigation, the intelligent Voice Control and the user interface sets a new benchmark for industry standards. There are a total of five different ways to interact with the multimedia system of the GLC: By touch control on the center multimedia display Using the Touch Control Buttons on the multifunction steering wheel With the multifunction Touchpad on the center console Using the gesture/movement recognition of MBUX Interior Assistant By Voice Control, either with the button on the steering wheel or the "Hey Mercedes” prompt The information the driver needs is shown on two high-resolution displays. The free-standing multimedia display in the center is 10.25 inches, with an optionally available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The driver can choose from three individual representations to best suit the mood of the interior: “Classic” is an advancement of the familiar Mercedes- Benz design, “Sport” presents a high-contrast and powerful look, “Progressive” visualizes high-tech modernity. Another effortless way of operating the multimedia system is with the MBUX Interior Assistant. A camera in the overhead control panel captures the movements of the hand as it approaches the touchscreen or the touchpad on the center console. The system makes a distinction between the gestures of the driver and the front passenger, which allows the user to interact with the media display by highlighting or enlarging individual elements. The reading light can also be switched on and off by hand movement recognition. To this end, the light in the overhead control panel follows the movement when the driver is looking for something on the front passenger seat, for example. In addition, there is the option of setting a favorite function of the multimedia system by a specific gesture. Another highlight in conjunction with MBUX is the optional Augmented Video for Navigation, which complements the navigation in a useful and very unique way. A camera in front of the rearview mirror captures the surroundings and automatically shows information on the multimedia display that integrates with the video image. This includes traffic signs, information about where to make a turn or house numbers. This makes searching for a given address, for example, very easy. The revised Voice Control system makes operation even more convenient and natural. By voice command, the driver can have the system read out text messages, operate the audio systems or access vehicle functions such as the climate control system. The system requires no memorized commands – the user has the freedom to phrase the desired destination address or to ask a question about the weather report off-the-cuff with natural language. The driver can activate the Voice Control with the "Hey Mercedes” prompt or with the button on the steering wheel. Topping off the new interior details is the redesigned KEYLESS-START function, using the turbine-look start-stop button. The user can select and activate the drive modes via the DYNAMIC SELECT switch on the center console. The multimedia display shows different drive modes in line with the particular equipment. The driver can select from “Comfort,” “ECO,” “Sport,” “Sport +” and “Individual” for customizing the steering, the suspension or the powertrain. A new engine: powerful efficiency The GLC comes to the starting line with a new 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine capable of 255 hp and 273 lb-ft. GLC 300 (RWD) GLC 300 4MATIC Cylinders/arrangement 4/in-line 4/in-line Output (hp) 255 255 Peak torque (lb-ft) 273 273 The crucial feature of the M 264 two-liter four-cylinder engine from Mercedes- Benz is the increased output at significantly lower fuel consumption. In the GLC 300 and GLC 300 4MATIC, the M 264 four-cylinder engine replaces the M 274 predecessor engine. The new engine generation is a crucial component for reducing CO2 emissions and is a systematic advancement with regard to lowering consumption. The four-cylinder engine is combined with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the 9G- TRONIC automatic transmission, which supports both a dynamic and a fuel- saving driving style. DYNAMIC SELECT: more than a setting An SUV that lives up to its name -- as usual, the GLC is convincing on almost any type of ground and in the most adverse weather conditions. The DYNAMIC SELECT system with expanded functions responds to the individual requests of the driver with regard to the handling and the requirements posed by the particular road conditions. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive has also been newly developed from the ground up. The three-stage design of ESP® with a wider spread now offers even more dynamics in the “Sport” and “Sport +” drive modes, once again proving the versatility of the GLC. Driving assistance systems: safe support In Germany, 85% of customers cite "safety" as the top characteristic when it comes to the GLC – and besides the typical SUV traits, this is due to the intelligent driver assistance systems. The scope and level in the new model have been advanced, thus enhancing driver support with regard to safety and comfort. The available Driver Assistance Package in the GLC includes, for example: Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® with the functions: Braking for stationary vehicles Expanded automatic restarting in a traffic jam in conjunction with Active Parking Assist and navigation Active Steering Assist with the functions: Active Emergency Stop Assist – with automatic unlocking and sending of an SOS call to the MB Emergency Call Center after vehicle comes to a stop in the event that the driver is unresponsive while Active Steering Assist is active Active Lane Change Assist in conjunction with navigation Active Speed Limit Assist with response to change in speed limit in conjunction with Traffic Sign Assist Route-Based Speed Adaptation adjusts ahead of bends, roundabouts and toll plazas, as well as before making a turn or exiting a highway; reduction of vehicle speed also for route event “end of traffic jam,” in conjunction with navigation Evasive Steering Assist Active Lane Keeping Assist Active Blind Spot Assist Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function PRE-SAFE® PLUS When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Route-Based Speed Adaptation is activated, the new GLC is able to recognize and respond to traffic jams or slow-moving traffic with the help of information from LiveTraffic before the driver becomes aware of this traffic obstruction. When a traffic jam is detected (and if the driver does not choose a different response), DISTRONIC reduces the speed as a precaution. This is complemented by an improved Active Lane Keeping Assist as well as by additional functions of Active Emergency Stop Assist. Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function reduces the risk of a potential accident when making a turn, for example, if the driver fails to see oncoming vehicles. If there is a danger of a collision with oncoming traffic when making a turn across the road, the GLC can brake at the speeds typical of such maneuvers. Braking intervention takes place if the driver signals the intention to make a turn and the vehicle can brake to a stop before crossing the lane markings. Oncoming vehicles are detected by the long-range radar sensor in the front and the Stereo Multipurpose Camera. Also possible is the simplified overtaking maneuver (Active Lane Change Assist) with activated Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist. When the driver activates the turn indicator at speeds above 50 mph on multi-lane roads, the system can help with changing lanes. The Exit Warning Function of Blind Spot Assist reduces the risk of failing to see an approaching vehicle or cyclist when opening the door. The Exit Warning Function is only active when the vehicle is stopped. When the driver or a passenger opens the door and a vehicle is approaching, the system emits a visual and audible warning. The function is active for up to three minutes after switching off the engine. In conjunction with the ambient light, the lights of the door handle recess and the trim illumination flashes red. Active Parking Assist is also optionally available. After pushing the button for Active Parking Assist and at speeds below 20 mph, the system shows all identified parking spaces in the immediate surroundings on the multimedia display. The driver selects the parking maneuver with the Touchpad, the touchscreen of the multimedia system or the Touch Control Button on the right of the steering wheel – the system then assists with pulling and reversing into and out of parallel and end-on parking spaces. Using the standard Blind Spot Assist feature, the parking system can warn the driver of cross-traffic when reversing out of end-on parking spaces, and also initiate automatic braking if necessary. The feature is called Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Car-to-X Communication supports the driver by providing up-to-date information and warnings of hazardous situations on the road. The radio-based exchange between vehicles as well as between vehicles and the traffic infrastructure informs the driver visually and/or acoustically of potential hazards. Strength: driven by dedication The new generation of the GLC marks the start of a new chapter in a true success story. The model sold significantly better than its predecessor in its first full year on the market. At present, Mercedes-Benz has a very successful presence in the SUV segment with seven models (GLA, GLC, GLC Coupe, GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS and G-Class). There is no doubt about it -- the SUVs play an essential role in the product range of the brand and its success. To date, more than five million SUVs from Mercedes-Benz were delivered to customers. The redesigned GLC SUV will celebrate its World Premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March and will go on sale in the U.S. by late 2019. View full article

Modern exterior design elements enhance the presence of the vehicle while the interior receives touches that upgrade the ambiance of luxury to new levels. The iDrive 7 system along with Mobileye interior camera and available Driving Assistant Professional bring BMW’s latest technology to the brand’s pinnacle luxury sedan. The design. Increased presence, refined elegance. Gracefully sporting proportions and alluring bodywork mark the exterior design of the new BMW 7 Series. The latest edition of the 7 Series features design updates that touch almost every area of the body, including the front bumper, hood, headlights, front fenders, rear bumper trim and rear lights to accentuate the elegance of the BMW 7 Series. The 126.4 inch long wheelbase allows for a spacious 44.4 inches of rear leg room and an equally accommodating 41.1 inches of front legroom. Taller front end and significantly larger BMW kidney grille. The extensive design refresh at the front end plays the most prominent role in giving the new BMW 7 Series its more powerful visual presence. Catching the eye first is the significantly expanded surfacing at the front of the car, which is now two inches taller at its highest point. The dominant feature of the front-end design is the BMW kidney grille, now framed by a single-piece surround whose surface area has grown larger by 40%. The Active Kidney Grille features adjustable vanes which only open when the need for cooling air is increased. The bars of the U.S. vehicles’ kidney grilles come standard in aluminum satin. The front of the air vanes between the kidney grille bars are High-gloss Chrome or black if the M Sport package is specified. The new BMW M760Li xDrive Sedan features a kidney grille surround and kidney grille bars finished in Cerium Grey. Slim headlight units, BMW Laserlight available as an option. The new design of the very slender headlight units provides an attractive visual contrast with the significantly enlarged BMW kidney grille, adding a new character to BMW’s luxury-class models. Standard equipment for the new BMW 7 Series includes Adaptive Full LED Lights with BMW Laserlight available as an option. New hood contours, covered air intakes. Among the striking design changes made to the front of the car is the re-designed hood. It extends up to the top of the higher BMW kidney grille and features more sculpted contour lines. The lower front bumper air intakes are now overlaid with large air deflectors. These guide the oncoming air more efficiently to the brake air ducts and the Air Curtains, which help to minimize turbulence around the wheel openings. L-shaped trim strips border the Air Curtains. Newly designed fenders with upright Air Breathers. Muscular surfaces and precisely drawn character lines shape the profile view of the new BMW 7 Series. With a long wheelbase and short overhangs, a flowing roofline and the Hofmeister kink, the luxury sedan features recognizable hallmark BMW design cues. Exterior mirrors, attached to the window surround trim by a thin stalk, strike a modern appearance and further improve aerodynamics. The front fenders have been redesigned to gracefully tie in the new headlight and front bumper. The Air Breathers, visible behind the front wheel openings, now feature larger air outlets that extend much higher into the front fenders to help optimize the flow of air through the wheel openings to help reduce aerodynamic turbulence. New rear-end design with full-width light strip. The modern design cues flow into the rear of the new BMW 7 Series, providing a more horizontal effect to the rear trunk and bumper surfacing. The exhaust system’s tailpipes surrounds are now wider and are finished in either chrome on standard models or in Cerium Grey on M Sport models. The LED, three-dimensional rear lights of the new BMW 7 Series are 1.4 inches slimmer than on the outgoing car and cut a sophisticated figure. A sharply defined and very slim light strip (only 0.2 inches wide) extends across the full width of the tailgate and connects the rear lights with each other. This light strip creates a discreetly illuminated accent when the daytime driving lights are switched on and teams up with the L-shaped taillights to generate a characteristic and highly distinctive night design at the rear of the new BMW 7 Series when darkness falls. New paint finishes and light-alloy wheels. The selection of exterior paint finishes available for the new BMW 7 Series sees new metallic and Individual options replacing several outgoing choices. Engines, transmission and BMW xDrive. Cutting-edge powertrain technology for a luxurious driving experience. The new BMW 7 Series takes the driving pleasure experience in a luxury sedan as seriously as it does the comfort of the passengers. The new BMW 7 Series is available with six, eight and twelve cylinder engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid drive system with a brand new design offering increased electric range, enhanced performance and lower consumption. The standard eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission has undergone improvement, as has the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. All the engines fitted in the new BMW 7 Series share a number of common features: aluminum construction, optimized thermodynamics and the very latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package for the engines features twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. Prestige plus performance: V12 engine in the BMW M760i xDrive. Spearheading the line-up of engines for the new BMW 7 Series is the twelve-cylinder motor that sets the benchmark for power delivery in the luxury segment. Traditionally the most prestigious engine variant, the V12 serves up a blend of unrivalled smoothness and tremendous performance. The engine powering the new BMW M760i xDrive has a displacement of 6.6 liters from which it extracts 600 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm. The peak torque of 627 lb-ft is on tap over a wide rev range from 1,550 to 5,000 rpm. The high-performance engine propels the remarkably sporty luxury sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed of the new BMW M760i xDrive is electronically limited to 155 mph. Extreme rigidity, weight optimization and effective reduction of vibrations are the defining qualities of the V12’s basic design. The all-aluminum engine’s two banks of cylinders are positioned at an angle of 60 degrees. On the outside of each bank is a single, mono-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling and a separate cooling circuit. In order to reduce back pressure, the exhaust gases flow unimpeded through the twin-pipe exhaust system’s rear silencer whenever the exhaust flap is open. The rear silencer combines with exhaust flap control to give the engine a broad acoustic spectrum, ranging from creamy smooth to dramatically sporty. The buttons of the Driving Experience Control switch can now be used to select an additional SPORT+ mode in the new BMW M760i xDrive that activates a track-geared vehicle set-up including linear throttle response, direct, sporty, undamped engine response and a particularly vocal soundtrack. New V8 engine built for effortless sportiness. One of the biggest changes in the engine range for the new BMW 7 Series is the eight-cylinder unit fitted in the BMW 750i xDrive Sedan. After undergoing an extensive overhaul covering everything from the crankcase through to the engine management, the 4.4-litre V8 generates a maximum output of 523 hp – 80 hp more than the engine it replaces – between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. The 553 lb-ft of peak torque represents an increase of 74 lb-ft and is available from 1,800 – 4,600 rpm. The engine’s standout features include the pair of twin-scroll turbochargers nestled in the 90-degree angle between the two banks of cylinders. The V8 unit lays on some expressive acoustic accompaniment for its instantaneous and ceaseless power build-up. The new BMW 750i xDrive sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds Straight-six gasoline engine with a thirst for revs. The power unit fitted in the new BMW 740i and 740i xDrive boasts the free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder inline engines from BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter unit employs a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft is waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm. The new BMW 740i completes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.3 seconds while the BMW 740i Xdrive’s extra traction allows it to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Plug-in hybrid drive system: now with six-cylinder in-line engine. The plug-in hybrid variant in the new BMW 7 Series range takes all of the luxury sedan’s sporty prowess, passenger comfort and soothing ambience and combines them with exceptionally high efficiency and the ability to offer a virtually silent, all-electric driving experience with zero emissions. The integration of a six-cylinder in-line engine into the plug-in hybrid system, a more advanced high-voltage battery, more power and torque, plus improved figures for electric range, chart the progress that has been made compared with the outgoing model. The plug-in hybrid model that will be available at the launch of the new BMW 7 Series in spring 2019 capture all of the luxury sedan’s essence even more effectively than before. Its newly developed drive technology consists of a specially adapted six-cylinder in-line engine from the current BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units – whose maximum output of 280 hp is delivered with characteristic smoothness and free-revving eagerness – an electric motor with a rated output of 113 hp and a rated torque of 195 lb-ft, and a new lithium-ion battery with the latest battery cell technology and increased capacity. Enhancements have also been made to the power electronics, whose intelligent energy management ensures precisely orchestrated interaction between the two drive units and, if the proactive driving function is activated, efficiently coordinates the electric driving phases to coincide with sections of the journey that should be covered without any emissions. At the same time, the added performance from the electrical boost, which translates into even more response, is greater than before, as is the gain in efficiency produced by the assistance from the electric motor. With the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT mode, the drive duo can unleash a combined output of 389 hp, while the maximum combined torque for the plug-in hybrid variants in the new BMW 7 Series is up to 442 lb-ft. The new plug-in hybrid drive technology enables the BMW 745e xDrive to record a 0-60 acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. The energy required for this is stored in a latest-generation lithium-ion battery located underneath the rear seats with an increased gross capacity of 12.0 kWh (10.4 kWh net). The all-electric driving range will be available closer to on-sale date. New eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission: sportier gear shifts plus more comfort and efficiency. A latest-generation eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission assumes the task of relaying the engine’s power to either the rear wheels (740i) or to the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system found in all of the other new 7 Series models. When mated to the six and eight-cylinder engines, the transmission’s new control electronics and wider ratio spread help to further increase the drive system’s overall efficiency. Improvements have been made across the board in terms of driving, shifting and acoustic comfort, thanks to new torsion dampers that limit rotational forces in the powertrain while improved hydraulic control enables sportier gear shifts. The BMW 745e xDrive is equipped with a hybrid-specific variant of the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission incorporating both the electric motor and an improved separating clutch that acts as the link to the engine. It’s extremely compact design means it is only around 0.6 inches longer than the transmissions in the non-hybrid models. The Launch Control function of the standard Sport Steptronic transmission aids by optimizing traction during acceleration when this feature is used. Intelligent networking enables the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s controller to work with the navigation information when selecting the best shift strategy. As a result, unnecessary gear shifts are reduced when driving through a succession of bends and optimum use can be made of the engine braking effect when approaching a junction. The drive system’s networking with both the navigation system and the cameras and radar sensors likewise serves to maximize the efficiency-enhancing effect of the Auto Start Stop and coasting functions. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown when stopping only briefly is prevented, while the coasting function – which is now also available with the Driving Experience Control switch set to COMFORT mode on all models apart from the BMW M760i xDrive – is only activated if the route topography and traffic situation mean it won’t compromise either comfort or performance. Fully variable, precise and efficient: BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The luxury sedan’s traction, agility and handling stability receives a boost with the addition of BMW xDrive. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is networked with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to swiftly and precisely distribute the drive torque between the front and rear wheels in a fully variable ratio as the situation demands. This means the engine’s power can always be directed to the wheels with maximum traction for loss-free transfer to the road, even in extremely dynamic driving situations or in adverse road and weather conditions. To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is sent to the rear wheels in situations in which all-wheel drive is not needed. All-wheel drive comes standard all new BMW 7 series models except for the rear-wheel drive 740i. Chassis technology and driving experience. Unbeatable comfort and signature BMW dynamics on demand. An exceptional balance between supreme driving comfort and the exhilarating flair for which BMW is renowned are the defining features of the driving experience on board the new BMW 7 Series. The construction of the chassis, the suspension and damping systems, the steering and the braking system are designed to facilitate both relaxed cruising undisturbed by inconsistencies in the road surface and a sporty, active driving style. The driver can use the Driving Experience Control buttons to select a set-up option to suit the situation – and configure that set-up individually in part. The set-up options cover the car’s drive functions and the manner in which its chassis systems go about their work. This allows the potential of the chassis technology to be fully experienced. In ADAPTIVE mode, the overall set-up adapts automatically to the driving style and situation, responding to movements of the accelerator pedal and steering wheel, the position of the gear selector lever and data from the navigation system to instantly select the right set-up as the car moves from city driving to higher-speed roads, for example, or approaches a corner. The design principle behind the double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle of the new 7 Series underpins its near-perfect balance between dynamic performance and comfort. The separation of wheel location and damping ensures the steering remains unaffected by disruptive forces from road surface imperfections. And high cornering speeds can be achieved without impacting negatively on ride comfort. The rear suspension uses its dual elastic bearings and tuned elastokinematics to ensure precise wheel location and excellent directional stability. The large rear axle sub-frame mounting provides an effective separation of the powertrain and suspension from the passenger cell, which benefits acoustic comfort. All variants of the new BMW 7 Series feature standard adaptive suspension including electronically controlled dampers and two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling. Plus, the Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate a range of damper settings to shift the emphasis of the driving experience further towards either comfort or sportiness. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. Plus, the height of the body can be adjusted manually. For example, it can be raised by 0.8 inches at the touch of a button on bumpy road surfaces or steeply-angled driveways. The spring/damper tuning in the new BMW 7 Series provides the basis for extremely dynamic handling properties combined with excellent ride comfort. Even greater control of body roll through keenly taken corners sharpens the sporting character of the luxury sedan. The set-up of the Electric Power Steering system has also been refined to improve both agility and handling precision. Integral Active Steering increases comfort, agility and poise. The optional Integral Active Steering demonstrates its strengths in a myriad of different driving situations. The system brings together the electromechanical steering of the front wheels – complete with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance and variable steering ratio – with rear axle steering. The variable steering ratio allows BMW 7 Series drivers to execute low-speed maneuvers with only small steering inputs and without having to change their grip on the steering wheel. At higher speeds, the car’s responses to movements of the steering wheel are less pronounced, improving both directional stability when driving in a straight line and precision on the way into corners. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, increasing the car’s maneuverability and significantly reducing its turning circle. By contrast, at higher speeds, the rear wheels follow the same direction as the front wheels, allowing the car to follow the course set by the driver even more quickly and accurately. Both in corners and when overtaking or changing lanes, Integral Active Steering imbues the luxury sedan with impressive poise and comfort. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview and active roll stabilization. The optional Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview chassis system further hones the ride comfort and dynamic ability of the new BMW 7 Series. Available for all model variants aside from the BMW 745e xDrive, this active chassis control technology reduces rolling movements at the front and rear axle. The Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview system teams up with the standard two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers to provide exceptional suspension and damping comfort and keep vibrations to a minimum. Active roll stabilization uses electric swivel motors to ensure fast and precise compensation of the lateral forces generated in dynamically taken corners. This enhances the car’s agility and directional stability when entering or exiting corners. The system noticeably increases comfort when driving straight ahead by counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on any one side. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview also includes an anticipatory chassis control function. The advance information for controlling the combination of chassis systems is learned from driving style analysis readings, data from the navigation system and a stereo camera, and significantly increases ride comfort and active safety. Driver assistance systems. Heading down the road to automated assisted driving in comfort and safety. The new BMW 7 Series underlines its status as one of the luxury segment’s most innovative and models with a comprehensive range of standard and optional driver assistance systems. Numerous new functions have now been added to the systems, through the introduction of BMW’s latest generation of advanced driver assists systems, which come to the driver’s aid in all sorts of different situations and specifically enhance various aspects of comfort and safety in the process. They ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions, such as traffic jams and heavy flowing traffic, and make it easier to stay in complete control in awkward traffic situations. Camera images and the data gathered by radar and ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surrounding area and either alert the driver to hazards or minimize the risk of an accident by means of corrective braking and steering. The assistance systems fitted in the new BMW 7 Series with their impressive wealth of features demonstrate how much progress has been made along the road to automated driving. The Active Driving Assistant package is standard equipment for the new BMW 7 Series. Based on camera and radar technology, it includes the Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. The Active Driving Assistant additionally includes the Lane Departure Warning Blind Spot Detection systems, which are operational from 44 – 130 mph and from 12 mph up to top speed respectively and help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering. The Active Driving Assistant also features the Speed Limit Info system, Rear Collision Preparation and Cross Traffic Alert, which mitigate rear end collisions. Driving Assistance Professional: complete assistance for comfortable and safe driving. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds the Driving Assistance Professional suite of features. It offers extensive assistance to make driving as safe and as comfortable as possible. This comprehensive package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Steering & Traffic Jam Assistant, Automatic Lane Change and Evasion Assistant & Cross Traffic alert. Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways greatly eases the driver’s burden during what may be the most tedious part of driving, stop and go highway traffic. Operating at speeds up to 37 mph on divided highways, this assist system uses the interior driver-facing camera to allow the driver extended hands off driving as long as they are attentive to the road ahead. It also handles acceleration and braking and is capable of adapting the road speed to the planned route with the help of navigation data. As a result, the vehicle is automatically decelerated to an appropriate speed in preparation for bends, junctions or roundabouts ahead. The camera-based traffic sign recognition system also makes use of the navigation data to glean information on upcoming speed restrictions so that they can be taken into consideration in advance. Evasion Assistant & Cross-traffic alert can help avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to such a scenario is detected, the system supports the driver when they steer the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane. Improved driver focus and visibility in the dark: BMW Head-Up Display and BMW Night Vision. By projecting information graphics onto the windscreen, the optional BMW Head-Up Display provides a particularly effective means of focusing on the task of driving. The system mirrors the information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be assimilated without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from other assistance systems, detailed turn instructions, plus telephone and entertainment lists. The optional BMW Night Vision system includes pedestrian and animal detection as well as a marker light. It relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing persons, larger animals and other heat-emitting objects. Any objects detected are additionally illuminated using the headlights’ marker light function. A helping hand with parking and maneuvering: standard Parking Assistant Plus and rear view camera. Drivers of the new BMW 7 Series also receive effective assistance when parking and maneuvering. The standard Active Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at both the front and rear has a range of functions, including not just visual and acoustic warnings but also automatic application of the brakes to prevent collisions with obstacles in the area surrounding the vehicle. A rear view camera comes standard, as does the Automatic Parking Assistant for automatically selecting and maneuvering into spaces that can now be either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Suitable parking spots are identified with the help of ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. During the parking maneuver, the system takes care of controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition to this, the system can be used for automatically maneuvering out of parallel parking spaces too. Unique in segment: Back-Up Assistant. Another of the Parking Assistant Plus’s features is the ingenious Back-Up Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spots or maneuver when space is limited. This system is the only one of its kind in this segment and offers the highly convenient facility of automated reversing, especially in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-story car parks, entrances to courtyards or narrow driveways. This is done by storing the steering movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver when travelling at speeds up to 22 mph. The system is then able to steer the vehicle for distances of up to 50 yards along exactly the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Panorama View and 3D Top View features are used to depict a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings from different perspectives in the Control Display. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone. BMW Live Cockpit featuring BMW iDrive 7.0 Operating System, BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive. Digital, intelligent and totally connected. Standard specification for the new BMW 7 Series includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital helper which responds to the prompt “Hey BMW” and is an intrinsic element of the iDrive 7 operating system. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving ease with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, as it marks the start of a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car, access its functions and obtain information simply by speaking. It is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does Park Distance Control work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). It knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance wellbeing. For instance, “Hey BMW, I’m tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more alert. The perfect assistant. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal assistant and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, how far can I drive before I need to refuel?”). Navigation can now be made simpler than ever, as the assistant will suggest convenient parking, both on and off street, at the journey’s destination, provide information on any traffic jams along the route and even search for a café in the vicinity. It learns destinations the customer drives to frequently. Connected Navigation with new digital services. “Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services that are designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into an even more sophisticated experience. Drivers of the new BMW 7 Series can share destinations from some of their favorite apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The key destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronized with the car, so that the most important addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Automatic Parking, which proposes various parking options both on and off street before the destination is reached. This service provides information on the nearest parking lots and garages as well as proposing routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. To help create the new Automatic Parking Assistant, the existing On-Street Parking Information data and Parkmobile services have been intelligently incorporated into its scope of functions. Buick has pulled back the curtain on the refreshed 2019 Envision crossover. It may seem crazy for a brand to refresh their model only a couple years after its debut. But we need to remember that Buick has been selling the Envision in China since 2014, so it is about the time when a refresh takes place. The big news is with the transmission. A nine-speed automatic becomes standard on turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. It's a nice pairing, especially since Buick has upped the torque figure from 260 to 295 pound-feet. Horsepower remains at 252. Sadly, the base 2.5L four-cylinder sticks with a six-speed automatic. There are some minor changes for the Envision's exterior with a new winged front grille, HID headlights becoming standard on all trims, larger taillights, and new designs for the alloy wheels. Pricing for the 2019 Envision is about $2,000 less on all trims compared to the 2018 model. This means the 2019 Envision begins at $32,990 (doesn't include destination). When Jeep released the 2014 Cherokee, much of the automotive press panned its polarising appearance. However, the buying public disagreed and went on to buy 220k Jeep Cherokees in 2015, its second full year on sale. For 2019, Jeep is updating the Cherokee to soften those polarizing looks and bring some new refinements to the Cherokee brand. First up is the front facia; The headlight clusters have been moved higher, up and out of the bumper and into a more conventional location in the upper fenders. The pointy grille has also been softened into a more versatile piece. Around back, the liftgate has new contouring in contrast to the giant flat surface of the outgoing model. The tail lights have been revised as well. The interior of the Cherokee largely carries over with just some minor repositioning of the USB outlets. Jeep did manage to find another 3 inches of width in the rear cargo area bringing the total to over 27 cubic feet. Jeep's UConnect system has been updated to the latest version and now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As for motivation, the two existing power trains carry over and a new one joins the lineup. The 2.4 liter Tigershark multi-air produces 180 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. Jeep changed some components out for less weight and less NVH. Customers can also select the 3.2 liter Pentastar V6 with 271 horsepower and 231 lb-ft of torque. This engine gives the Cherokee a best in class tow rating of 4,500 lbs. Both engines include electronic start-stop for improved fuel economy around town. New for 2019 is a 2.0 liter turbo direct-injected 4-cylinder that first debuted in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. In the Cherokee, the 2.0T is rated for 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and also features electronic start-stop. The engine features a twin scroll turbo with an electronically activated wastegate. Jeep saved 3 1/2 lbs of weight from the engine by using hollow camshafts. All three of these engines are fitted to a 9-speed automatic transmission that has received additional software updates for 2019. Naturally it would not be a Jeep without available off-road capability. The three 4x4 systems from the previous model carry over. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee will arrive at dealers in early 2018. New 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with engine stop-start (ESS) The 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers a practical and dependable choice for everyday adventures with premium on-road manners and impressive fuel efficiency – courtesy of three engine offerings. One of the most technologically advanced engines in the automotive industry, the all-new 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine is rated at 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a high-efficient nine-speed automatic transmission. Benefits of the new engine include outstanding fuel economy with engine stop-start (ESS) technology, low emissions, quick 0-60 miles per hour (mph) launch performance, and enhanced drivability. The all-new 2.0-liter I-4 features a twin-scroll, low inertia turbocharger with an electric actuated waste gate for exceptional responsiveness and performance, even while traversing over difficult terrain. The turbo is mounted directly to the cylinder head to reduce emissions and improve durability. A dedicated cooling circuit lowers the temperature of the intake air, throttle body and turbocharger. The 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine is part of the Global Medium Engine architecture family and features double overhead camshafts (DOHC), dual independent camshaft timing, and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (C-EGR) system. This is the first time that the combined use of a twin-scroll turbocharger, C-EGR system, central direct injection and the independent liquid cooling intake of air, throttle body and turbo have been employed together. This combination of technologies enables the high levels of performance and reduces fuel consumption. Direct injection, coupled with turbocharging, enables more efficient combustion, reduced emissions and increased performance. The 2.0-liter I-4 engine’s fuel pump supplies the engine’s 2,900-psi high-pressure common-rail injection system. These high pressures produce better fuel atomization and allow for more precise fuel delivery than port fuel-injected systems, which in turn improves both performance and efficiency. The cast aluminum alloy cylinder head features a central injector and high tumble intake ports. This combination provides high charge motion and balanced air flow to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Integrated into the cylinder head is a water-cooled exhaust manifold to reduce emissions while providing increased engine reliability. The 2.0-liter I-4 engine features a low-pressure, sand cast-aluminum block with cast-in iron liner with an 84mm bore and 90mm stroke for a total displacement of 1,995cc. Cast-aluminum pistons, with a 10:1 compression ratio, have four valve pockets to accommodate the dual variable-valve timing [VVT] system. Each cylinder bore is fitted with gallery-mounted piston oil cooling jets to limit piston temperatures, reduce spark knock and increase piston durability. Select-fit main and rod bearings enable reduced clearances to help lower system oil demand and oil pumping effort. In addition, floating piston pins utilize diamond-like coating (DLC) for reduced friction. The high-energy ignition system includes a high-energy ignition coil for better fuel efficiency. Precious-metal spark plugs with iridium and platinum provide lasting durability. Located in the center of the cam cover, the spark plugs are easily accessible when service is required. Sodium-filled exhaust valves and plasma-coated piston rings also help extend the engine’s life and bolster durability. A variable displacement two-stage oil pump provides high oil pressure under high speed but switches to a low-pressure mode for improved fuel economy during typical driving conditions. The piston cooling is also managed by the two-stage oil pump to enhance fuel economy under normal driving conditions while improving durability under demanding, high-load engine operation. A large capacity oil cooler extends the oil change interval and ensures engine durability. An inverted tooth primary chain drives both the intake and exhaust camshafts and minimizes noise. Camshafts are robotically assembled using hollow shafts and have polished cam journals to reduce weight and improve durability for engine stop-start operation. The use of hollow shafts provides a 3.5-lb. weight reduction when compared to an equivalent solid shaft. High-efficient powertrains Two additional high-efficient engines options are available in the 2019 Jeep Cherokee: the 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 and 2.4-liter PZEV Multiair2 Tigershark I-4 – both mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 The 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is available across the Cherokee lineup producing 271 horsepower, 239 lb.-ft. of torque and delivering best-in-class V-6 towing of 4,500 pounds. The engine blends a balance of efficiency, power and refinement from the same innovations that earned its larger displacement predecessor industry-wide acclaim, while reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) for occupants. The engine retains its individual exhaust-manifold runners that are integrated into the aluminum cylinder-head casting and are a key Pentastar-family differentiator. This feature not only reduces weight and produces packaging benefits; it also increases manufacturing efficiency. The 24-valve engine’s 10.7:1 compression ratio aids in lowering fuel consumption and improves performance while the variable-displacement oil pump further reduces parasitic losses to maximize fuel economy. The pump is programmed to operate as needed, staying in low-pressure mode at rpms below 3,500, and then bumping up pressure as demand follows engine speed. 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 The fuel efficient and refined 2.4-liter PZEV MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine is standard in the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine produces 180 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. For 2019, engine oil heater and weight-reduced components were achieved, which improved fuel economy during warm-up cycles. Also, changes to air intake applications have resulted in noise vibration and harshness (NVH) improvements. The acclaimed electro-hydraulic fully variable valve-lift system uses a column of oil in place of the traditional mechanical link between the camshaft and intake valves. It delivers precise control of the intake-valve events – beginning and end – delivering reductions in engine-pumping losses and increases in volumetric efficiency. In addition to reducing carbon-dioxide emissions, MultiAir2 accounts for a fuel-economy boost of up to 7.5 percent, compared with engines with conventional valve trains. Nine-speed transmission The 2019 Jeep Cherokee benefits from an upgraded TorqueFlite nine-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox features new software that further refines drivability. The nine-speed transmission delivers numerous benefits, including aggressive launches, smooth power delivery at highway speeds and improved fuel efficiency versus a six-speed automatic transmission. The transmission is engineered to ensure the vehicle is always in the appropriate gear. Its 4.71 first-gear ratio contributes to launch performance, while the small steps between mid-range gears ensure smoothness. Higher gears enable lower engine speeds – a primary operating condition for superior fuel efficiency. The gearbox also contributes to design efficiency. Its nested carrier configuration affords packaging advantages. Superior on-road performance A front independent suspension with MacPherson struts and a rear independent multi-link suspension absorb on-and off-road obstacles while providing superb comfort for vehicle occupants. The front suspension provides 6.7 inches of travel, while the rear suspension provides up to 7.8 inches of travel for better articulation. The isolated rear cradle, high-strength, low-alloy front crossmember and superior torsional rigidity all contribute to the quieter, smoother ride and superior handling characteristics drivers will experience in the Cherokee. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is equipped with an electronic power steering system (EPS), which improves fuel efficiency and contributes to the Jeep Cherokee’s nimbleness with a turn circle radius of more than 37 feet in 4x2 models and approximately 38 feet in 4x4 models. With EPS, the power assist is provided via an electric motor system rather than a traditional hydraulic system. Because the system is fully electronic, the driver experiences optimal steering effort at all vehicle speeds, and there is less noise and better fuel efficiency since there is no parasitic loss from a power steering pump. This technology also enables active safety features, such as LaneSense Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist and ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist. Unmatched Jeep 4x4 capability The 2019 Jeep Cherokee highlights a choice of three innovative 4x4 systems that have been enhanced for unmatched 4x4 capability for all weather conditions. Jeep Cherokee maintains its place as the benchmark mid-size SUV with rear-axle disconnect technology that results in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed, while improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver. Jeep Active Drive I Available on the Cherokee Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited and Overland models, Jeep Active Drive I features an all-new design for Cherokee. Jeep engineers set out to reduce weight and enhance efficiency of the next-generation rear drive module (RDM), which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. The result of this new state-of-the-art technology is reduced weight of nearly 17 lbs., and a reduction of low-speed system drag torque by 50 percent, which improves fuel savings. The system does not require any driver intervention or feedback, delivers yaw correction during dynamic events, and improves during both understeer and oversteer conditions. The available ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist System is displayed in the center of the gauge cluster and operated with buttons on the steering wheel and the shifter. The graphic walks drivers through the steps necessary to utilize the park assist system. A Jeep designer’s passion for the brand shines through in the park assist screen, which features a 1941 Jeep Willys graphic on each side of the open parking space. Safety and security The new Jeep Cherokee was engineered with more than 80 available safety and security features. The Jeep Cherokee starts with a strong foundation constructed with 65 percent high-strength steel. Engineers then added both active and passive safety and security features, including ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Forward Collision Warning-Plus, and LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus; SOS button; Electronic Stability Control (ESC); Electronic Roll Mitigation; Blind-spot Monitoring; Rear Cross Path detection; ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines and eight standard air bags. The ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist feature remains a highlight in the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Using ultrasonic parking sensors on the bumper the system will find and guide the customer into an available parking space when the driver initiates the parking maneuver. The parking guidance system controls the steering angle automatically and the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator. Parallel parking is possible on either side of the car. During perpendicular parking, the vehicle is backed into the space. Additionally, a new side-distance warning feature now adds greater awareness to drivers of side objects while the vehicle is at low speed and in a parallel parking sequence. Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus is significant for its ability to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without driver intervention, in certain conditions. Radar and video sensors identify the locations of vehicles traveling ahead of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The sensors also help ensure the vehicles are separated by a gap determined by the driver. If the gap is dramatically breached, the ESC system can aggressively deploy the vehicle’s brakes to affect a full stop, even if the driver never touches the brake pedal. To resume travel, the driver need only press a button on the steering wheel or tap the accelerator pedal. Forward Collision Warning-Plus addresses traffic-gap changes when Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus is inactive. When radar and video sensors detect a fast-closing obstacle ahead, the system pre-fills the brakes to prepare for emergency driver intervention. If collision risk remains, Forward Collision Warning-Plus correspondingly ratchets up the response with: audible and visual warnings a brief brake deployment to alert the driver a 1.5-second brake deployment to quicken the driver’s reaction time deployment of Advanced Brake Assist, if the driver is not braking aggressively enough Lane Departure Warning-Plus uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the Jeep Cherokee’s position on the road. If an unintentional lane drift occurs, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning – the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning. Jeep Active Drive II Available on the Cherokee Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited and Overland models, the recalibrated Jeep Active Drive II includes a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU) with torque management and low range. The 4-Low mode locks the front and rear driveshafts for low-speed power or towing. Low range provides a 2.92:1 gear reduction that allows for enhanced climbing ability, as well outstanding crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee with Jeep Active Drive II gives the off-road adventurer a ride height increase of one inch, a crawl ratio of 51:2:1 when powered by the 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, and a crawl ratio of 48.3:1 when powered by the 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. Also, the system has a Neutral state that allows for flat-towing with all four wheels on the ground. Jeep Active Drive Lock Jeep Active Drive Lock includes all the features of Jeep Active Drive II and adds a locking rear differential for superior low-speed traction for severe off-road conditions. Jeep Active Drive Lock is standard on all Trailhawk models. All 4x4 systems feature the Jeep brand’s renowned Selec-Terrain traction control system, which allows the driver to choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum performance. Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk models with the standard off-road package are Trail Rated. The “Trail Rated” badge on the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording. World-class architecture The new 2019 Jeep Cherokee is built on the proven Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-wide) platform’s modular architecture that results in better quality and reliability, as well as lower costs, less development time and tooling. The architecture Cherokee is built on is comprised of common, modular and interchangeable components and allows for modularity of the wheelbase, front track, rear track, front overhang, length and width across vehicle lines. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee’s body structure has a high-strength steel content of approximately 65 percent. Hot stamped-, high-strength- and ultra-high-strength steel are used to construct a strong, lightweight, solid vehicle architecture. Fourth-generation Uconnect systems The new 2019 Jeep Cherokee receives the latest Uconnect systems, which include easy-to-use features, enhanced processing power, faster start-up times and touchscreens that display high-resolution graphics. Consumers will have the choice of 7.0-, or 8.4-inch touchscreen displays in the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Apple CarPlay seamlessly integrates an iPhone with the car’s built-in display and controls in addition to featuring Siri Voice control. iPhone-equipped drivers can make phone calls, access music, send and receive messages, receive voice-guided navigation optimized for traffic conditions and more, while staying focused on the road Android Auto automatically provides drivers with a safer way to use Android phones while driving. The system will share useful information when driving and makes it easy to access the best of Google. It features Google Maps with free voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance; on-demand access to 30 million songs with Google Play Music; the ability to place phone calls or send and receive messages while keeping hands on the wheel; and the ability to ask Google to search any question. Android Auto also makes it easy to access popular apps and content from the Uconnect system’s touchscreen The world-class thin-film transistor (TFT) LED 3.5-inch grayscale or 7-inch full-color reconfigurable instrument cluster allows the driver to enjoy a customized user experience and receive information and vehicle feedback in the format they prefer while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The easy-to-use instrument cluster displays the basic information for drivers at their fingertips, but also allows them to add information they desire. Drivers can select from a multitude of information, which can be displayed in the center of the gauge cluster, including turn-by-turn navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, available Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, audio information and Jeep-specific features, such as Selec-Terrain. It seems Cadillac has some updates in store for the XTS if some leaked pictures from Chinese website Autohome are the real deal. The pictures show the XTS taking some ideas from the CT6 and XT5. Up front is a broader, more upright grille with new headlights. Around back is a more sculpted trunk lid and L-shaped taillights. Powertrains are expected to carry over, meaning the U.S. will stick with the 3.6L V6 and twin-turbo 3.6L. Over in China, the XTS will stick with the 2.0L turbo-four. We wouldn't be surprised if there is an update for the CUE system. Source: Autohome View full article
