Land Rover's ambition of building an ultra-luxury Range Rover to take on the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga has been canned. “We have taken the difficult decision to inform our customers that the Range Rover SV Coupé will not proceed into production. Instead, Land Rover is focusing its resources and investment on the next generation of world-class products," Land Rover said in a statement issued yesterday. Shown at last year's Geneva Motor Show, the SV Coupé was going to be a special model built by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations. Almost all of the panels were unique to the model. The interior was quite plush with seating for up to four and special leather upholstery. A supercharged 5.0L V8 punches out 557 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover was planning on building 999 models costing a cool $295,995 (includes a $995 destination charge). A Land Rover spokesperson said the cancellation isn't due to the lack of demand, though the person wouldn't say how many were sold. Working on a second-generation Range Rover Evoque seemed like a tough ask for Land Rover. The model would prove to be very popular in part due its sharp lines and compact shape. While it seemed to be at home in urban areas, the Evoque was quite capable off-road. At an event in London on Thursday night, Land Rover unveiled the next-generation Evoque. It doesn't look dramatically different than the outgoing Evoque with a high beltline and low roof. There are some traits that have migrated from the larger Velar with similar front ends and flush door handles. The interior has seen the most drastic change with a modern design seen in other Range Rover models. Two touchscreens fill the center stack and control most of the vehicle's functions. Land Rover will offer two eco-friendly upholstery options for the Evoque - a eucalyptus-derived textile and a Kvadrat wool blend. For North America, the 2020 Evoque will offer two variants of the 2.0L turbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine. The base engine produces 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. A new mild-hybrid version pairs the 2.0L with an all-new 48-Volt electrical system. This allows for a smoother start-stop system and slightly more power - 296 hp and 296 lb-ft. Both versions of the turbo 2.0L get paired with a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Fitting a new 48-Volt electrical system meant developing a new architecture to have it fit. The 2020 Evoque is the first Land Rover model to use the mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture. Aside from providing a space for the batteries, the new architecture also provides a stiffer structure and lighter weight. Range Rover is bringing back a two-door variant for a limited production run. The 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe which made its debut today at the Geneva Motor Show is the latest project to come from Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations. On the surface, it may seem that the SV Coupe shares a number body panels with the standard Range Rover. But the hood and lower tailgate are the only panels that are shared. Every other body panel is specific to the SV Coupe. The front end features a special two-piece grille. Designers blacked out the roof pillars on the rear to give the effect of a floating roof. Wheels range in size from 21 to 23-inches. Move inside and it is quite clear where most of the money has been spent. The SV Coupe has seating for four people in widened and deepened seats. Buyers can choose from eight interior colors (four single-tone and four two-tone). The leather upholstery comes from a single 113-year-old tannery and is stitched in a diamond pattern. Front seats get 20-way power adjustments, while back seats get 10-way adjustments. The dash is the same as you'll find in the regular Range Rover with two 10-inch touchscreens handling most functions. Range Rover is bringing back a two-door variant for a limited production run. The 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe which made its debut today at the Geneva Motor Show is the latest project to come from Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations. On the surface, it may seem that the SV Coupe shares a number body panels with the standard Range Rover. But the hood and lower tailgate are the only panels that are shared. Every other body panel is specific to the SV Coupe. The front end features a special two-piece grille. Designers blacked out the roof pillars on the rear to give the effect of a floating roof. But would Land Rover consider adding a model to sit above the Range Rover to take on the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls' upcoming SUV? When Land Rover first introduced the Range Rover back in 1970, it was only available as a two-door model. The last two-door model would roll off the assembly in 1994, never to be seen again. But Land Rover is planning to bring back the two-door Range Rover as a limited-run model. Yesterday, Land Rover dropped a teaser picture of the upcoming Range Rover SV Coupe. The picture is an overhead shot of the SV Coupe's interior which looks like what you'll find in a highly-spec Range Rover. The front seats are upholstered in white leather, while the back seats come in blue. If you want a Range Rover Evoque Coupe, you might want to snap up a 2017 model as soon as possible. Motor Authority reports that Land Rover will stop selling the Evoque Coupe in the U.S. at the end of this year. The reason given was due to slow sales. Surprisingly, Motor Authority notes that the Evoque Convertible outsells the coupe. Last month, Land Rover announced some changes to the 2018 Evoque lineup with the big news being an all-new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. Land Rover is introducing a number of updates for the 2018 Range Rover Sport including an updated version of the In Control infotainment system and a slight power boost for the SVR variant. But the big news is for a new model that will be joining the lineup next August. Meet the 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e, the first plug-in hybrid model from Land Rover. The P400e is part of a new nomenclature that will be appearing on Jaguar and Land Rover models in the coming years. The P represents petrol (gas to us Yanks), 400 is the power output, and e represents some sort of electrification. We're not fans of this new system, but it makes much more sense than Audi's two-digit system. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and an electric motor producing a total output of 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. A 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides 31 miles of electric-only range. No mention of recharging times however. Land Rover quotes performance figures of 6.3 seconds to 60 mph and a top speed of 137 mph. The P400e features a special calibrated version of Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 off-road system. This version takes advantage of the electric motor's torque from zero rpm to provide better control during low-speed off-road maneuvers. The models will pair JLR's 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium gas engine with an electric motor. EV range is said to be about 30 miles when the battery is charged - although the range could be based on the European cycle. No power ratings were given for hybrid system. We've realized that the Range Rover has got this big expanse across its price range, so it's not a very big step to get into Bentayga country," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design chief to Automotive News Europe. McGovern said that a Range Rover competitor to the Bentayga would have the edge as they have been doing the luxury SUV for much longer. "Bentley doesn't have the pedigree and authenticity in that particular sector. We've got unquestionable pedigree." McGovern went on to say that he would like to see the Range Rover family expand. Currently, there are four models in the lineup - Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, and the upcoming Velar. The plans for expansion could cause some overlap, but McGovern doesn't see a problem with this. "I would argue you could have two Range Rovers exactly the same size but if they had two personalities then they would both have equal appeal but to different customers."
