  1. Award Worthiness Confirmed for Motor Trend 2017 Car of the Year - Chevrolet BOLT Motor Trend plugged in their long term Chevrolet Bolt tester 13 months ago and today they announced that they have confirmed it lived up to every expectation of being the 2017 Car of the Year. It was not just a good affordable EV that eliminated range anxiety but after 17,000 miles deserved to be praised! They do state that the CUV was not perfect as they had two software updates that fixed issues and the shifter was replaced. With that said, maintenance for the year was $0. Cost of powering the EV CUV which had a total of 154 charges cost a total of $630.58 using 69 charges at the office, 47 charges at public for pay stations and 27 times at home. This compares to driving the same distance in a Toyota Prius that would cost $800 and a Kia Soul that would cost you $1,550 dollars. Over all the write up is very good with plenty of interesting info on living with an EV auto. As they state, the only EV available today for under $40,000 that you can go buy and drive off the lot same day. The motor trend staff is ready to make the switch. Breaking down monthly fuel costs: Bolt = $52.55 per month Prius = $66.67 per month Soul = $129.17 per month Motor Trend 2017 Car of the Year Story
  2. http://www.motortrend.com/cars/kia/stinger/2018/2018-kia-stinger-gt-first-test-review/ The review is largely unremarkable. They like how the car drives and the blend of ride compliance while maintaining handling responsiveness. The 3.3T V6 makes good power and rarely feels burdened unless it gets caught in the lower revs. They have some gripes with the 8-speed transmission hesitation and steering. One point of surprise is how this RWD example weighed in just over 4000 lbs despite being touted as one of the first cars on Hyundai/Kia's new lighter RWD platform. I personally find issue with the constant doting on Hyundai and Kia as being a "great first try," or a "good start" like they're patting them on the back and judging their product in a vacuum because they were terrible 10 years ago. Well I found an inconvenient comparison for them, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec: 2012 Genesis R-Spec (Motor Trend test) 5.0L/8-speed auto 429 hp/376 tq 0-60: 4.8 sec 1/4 mi: 13.3 @ 107.1 mph Braking: 109 ft Grip: .87g Figure 8: 26.3 sec Weight: 4199 lb Starting Price: $47,350 ($48, 785 as tested) 2018 Kia Stinger (Motor Trend test linked above) 3.3T/8-speed auto 365 hp/376 tq 0-60: 4.8 sec 1/4 mi: 13.3 @ 106.9 mph Braking: 113 ft Grip: .85g Figure 8: 26.2 sec Weight: 4005 lb Estimated Price: $50,000 as tested ($40,000 base, whatever that includes) New engine, new chassis, 6 years apart, and these two cars are on top of each other. Hyundai/Kia have progressed essentially nowhere in half a decade, and I'm done saying "great first try" because this isn't the company's first, second, or third RWD. Good looking car, reasonable performance. Nothing mind blowing.
  3. This was a cool read on MT, their BIG Test of Luxury SUVs. http://www.motortrend.com/cars/cadillac/escalade/2015/the-big-test-large-luxury-suvs/ The end results were as follows: 6TH PLACE: INFINITI QX80 When you factor in worst in test fuel economy, a cramped third row, and those awkward looks, you have a big SUV that only one of us loved. 5TH PLACE: LINCOLN NAVIGATOR Although it’s cheaper than the others, it’s not nearly as luxurious. We love the powertrain and the ‘Gator’s utility. 4TH PLACE: LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER HSE Gorgeous truck, Gerry McGovern be praised. But the suspect build quality and pricey everything else leaves us cold. 3RD PLACE: LEXUS LX 570 Old age and treachery get some respect! Not ideal for all owners, but there’s something uniquely desirable about Lexus’ go-anywhere bruiser. 2ND PLACE: MERCEDES-BENZ GL450 Our former SUV of the Year is starting to show signs of age. Still, the GL remains one of the smartest SUVs you can buy. 1ST PLACE: CADILLAC ESCALADE PLATINUM The best looking, the best interior, the best sounding, and the quickest in our test. The Cadillac Escalade Platinum stole our hearts. In reading the write up, it was amazing to see many of the folks involved in the testing said while they all picked this as the SUV of the Year in 2015, looking back, the exterior and interior are sadly showing how dated it is. Not holding up well compred to the Escalade. I was also surprised by the fact that they found the Lexus was actually a better off roader and more features for off road driving than the vaunted Range Rover. The lexus had the most features that allowed you to do things the range rover could not. I honestly thought it was a very balanced, one of the better reads from MT.
  4. Motor Trend has named its truck of the year today and it has come to a complete shock to those who were expecting the Ford F-150 to take home the golden calipers. Instead it has gone to the Chevrolet Colorado. “After days of testing, hundreds of miles on the road, and our most rigorous truck testing program to date, our editors unanimously selected the Chevy Colorado as our 2015 Truck of the Year. Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest truck that makes a strong value and efficiency statement. It’s perfectly sized and suited for the needs of many of today’s truck users,” said Edward Loh, editor-in-chief at Motor Trend. The Colorado earned praise for its spacious interior, fit and finish; performance, and price tag. The most surprising part of the Colorado's win was that unanimous vote by the editors of Motor Trend. Aside from beating out the F-150, the Colorado also beat out Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Ford F-450 Ford Transit 350 HR and Transit 150 MR GMC Canyon SLT GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD Source: Motor Trend, GM Press Release is on Page 2 MOTOR TREND Names Chevrolet Colorado 2015 Truck of the Year Midsize pickup outclasses competition in design, engineering, efficiency, safety and more EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – After its most comprehensive truck evaluation program in history, MOTOR TREND has selected the Chevy Colorado as its 2015 Truck of the Year®. MOTOR TREND’s Truck of the Year program is only open to all-new or significantly updated trucks and vans for the upcoming model year. For 2015, seven contenders were invited to compete; three competitors were asked to bring a powertrain and/or body style variant for a total of 10 vehicles overall: Chevrolet Colorado WT and Colorado Z71 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Ford F150 2.7L EcoBoost and 3.5L EcoBoost Ford F-450 Ford Transit 350 HR and Transit 150 MR GMC Canyon SLT GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD The 2015 Colorado emerged as MOTOR TREND’s 2015 Truck of the Year by a rare unanimous vote. The editors were particularly impressed with Colorado’s handsome, clean-sheet design, “right-sized” package, excellent handling and overall capability. Colorado’s potent-yet-efficient powertrains also returned best-in-class fuel economy according to Real MPG and EPA testing. “After days of testing, hundreds of miles on the road, and our most rigorous truck testing program to date, our editors unanimously selected the Chevy Colorado as our 2015 Truck of the Year,” said Edward Loh, MOTOR TREND’s editor-in-chief. “Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest truck that makes a strong value and efficiency statement. It’s perfectly sized and suited for the needs of many of today’s truck users.” Said Sandor Piszar, Chevy Trucks marketing director: “The Chevrolet Colorado offers customers the versatility of a pickup in a powerful, refined, fuel-efficient midsize package, with up to 27 mpg EPA highway. For Colorado to emerge from MOTOR TREND’s thorough evaluation as the 2015 Truck of the Year shows how Colorado is changing the game by offering truck customers fresh new choices.” To determine which truck deserved top honors, the MOTOR TREND test team subjected all of the contenders to numerous instrumented and real-world road tests. First up was standard MOTOR TREND testing, which included: 0-60 mph and 1/4-mile acceleration, 60-0 mph braking, and maximum lateral grip - all without payload or trailered loads. A specific payload was then added to each truck and van, and the vehicles were then driven more than 250 miles to the Arizona/Nevada border to evaluate ride quality and loaded fuel economy. The vehicles were driven up and down the famed Davis Dam in Bullhead City, Ariz., for further assessment, including an instrumented test designed to simulate a passing situation while carrying a load. The team then moved to a world-class automotive proving grounds for instrumented acceleration tests with nominal weight trailers. Truck and trailer were also driven through a short handling course to evaluate acceleration, braking, maneuverability and outward visibility. The final phase of evaluation involved a 21-mile road loop through hills of Arizona’s Hualapai Mountains. Following the team’s intensive evaluation, the trucks were shipped to MOTOR TREND headquarters in El Segundo to undergo proprietary “Real MPG” fuel-economy testing. Using advanced exhaust gas and flow-rate analyzers, Real MPG measures tailpipe emissions every second during a three-hour, 88-mile drive around the Los Angeles area to record accurate real-world fuel economy. Once testing was completed, select MOTOR TREND editors convened to determine which truck would be crowned Truck of the Year. The winner is not chosen from a direct comparison against the other contenders, but rather as a result of how each contender performed in testing and against the award’s six criteria: Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Safety, Value, and Performance of Intended Function.

  6. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 10, 2013 'It's the most wonderful time of the year.' No, I'm not referring to the upcoming holiday season. I'm talking about the automotive award season which was kicked off today by Motor Trend announcing their Sport/Utility of the Year for 2014. The winner for this go-around was the Subaru Forester. The Forester beat the likes of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Acura MDX, and Buick Encore on value, fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive-ness. "We are honored to receive the MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year award for the third time. Our product, engineering, sales and marketing teams all work hard to provide the best products and experiences we can for our owners. Receiving this distinction from MOTOR TREND truly adds credence to our mission," said Thomas J. Doll, president, and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. For those keeping score, this is Subaru's third Sport/Utility of the Year award and the Forester's second. Source: Motor Trend, Subaru William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. Press Release is on Page 2 SUBARU FORESTER SCORES SECOND MOTOR TREND SPORT/UTILITY OF THE YEAR® WIN -Subaru is first (and only) manufacturer to win SUOTY three times -Most wins in Sport/Utility category -Only automaker with back-to-back wins in category Cherry Hill, N.J. - Motor Trend announced today that the Subaru Forester won Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year for 2014. Subaru is the only manufacturer to win this title three times, the most wins in the Sport/Utility category. In the past six years of competition, Subaru has had three winners – the 2014 Forester, 2010 Outback, and the 2009 Forester. The 2013 XV Crosstrek also ranked as a finalist in 2012. MOTOR TREND editor-in-chief Ed Loh, said, "The 2014 Subaru Forester beat a highly competitive field of SUVs because it best met our award's six key criteria. Smart design, thoughtful engineering, and a compelling performance on road and off were the keys to the Forester's win. Our editors were particularly impressed by the powerful yet efficient turbocharged engines, the intelligent and sporty CVT transmission, and the excellent visibility and interior package found within the Forester. Practical, affordable, efficient and fun-to-drive - Forester truly ticked every box". In addition to the Subaru Forester, the 2014 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year competition included twelve other all-new or significantly updated SUVs: Acura MDX Audi Q5 BMW X1 Buick Encore Dodge Durango Hyundai Santa Fe Jeep Grand Cherokee Kia Sorento Land Rover Range Rover Sport Mini Paceman S ALL4 Mitsubishi Outlander Toyota RAV4 "We are honored to receive the MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year award for the third time," said Thomas J. Doll, president, and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. "Our product, engineering, sales and marketing teams all work hard to provide the best products and experiences we can for our owners. Receiving this distinction from MOTOR TREND truly adds credence to our mission." MOTOR TREND's Sport/Utility of the Year is not a comparison test, and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. To judge contenders for the award, MOTOR TREND's editorial staff conducted an exhaustive three-phase testing process. Phase one includes a full tech check and weigh-in, then full track testing to establish baseline data for acceleration, braking, and handling. Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems. In the third phase the judges debate and deliberate. The judging criteria include the following categories: Design Advancement - well-executed exterior and interior styling; innovative vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials. Engineering Excellence - total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues; cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer. Performance of Intended Function - how well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do. Efficiency - low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle's competitive set. Safety - a vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm during a crash. Value - competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment. Priced from $21,995, the Forester is offered with a new 250-horsepower 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged BOXER engine or a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder BOXER engine. A Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission) is standard in the 2.0XT models and available for the 2.5-liter models, which features a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The Forester jumps to the head of its segment in all-wheel drive fuel economy, with the 2.5i model achieving EPA estimates of 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway/ 27 mpg combined (with CVT). The 2014 Forester has received a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Forester is the first vehicle to ace every aspect of the challenging small overlap front crash test conducted by the IIHS. The Forester is the only one of 13 small SUVs to earn an overall rating of good in the test. The recognition from MOTOR TREND validates the sales success of the 2014 Forester, which is up 46% year-to-date over 2012. Forester's strong sales performance mirrors the growth of the Subaru brand overall, which is on track to achieve its fifth-consecutive year of sales increases and top 400,000 vehicle sales in the US market in 2013. Forester's strong sales performance mirrors the growth of the Subaru brand overall, which is on track to achieve its fifth-consecutive year of sales increases and top 400,000 vehicle sales in the US market in 2013.
