  1. The crossover fever has really hit Buick as they claim "almost 90 percent of U.S." sales come from their utility lineup. So why not add another crossover to their lineup? Buick announced today the Encore GX which will go on sale early next year. Coming from China, the model will slot between the Encore and Envision. Not many details were provided aside from the cargo space being " almost 5 cubic feet larger than the Encore and about 3 cubic feet smaller than the Envision." Car and Driver reports that the GX will have a slightly more powerful turbo-four when compared to the Encore; automatic transmission, and the choice of either front or all-wheel drive. “As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC. More details are expected as the we get closer to the launch. Today, almost 90 percent of U.S. Buick sales come from SUVs. The Encore GX’s new standard safety and driver assistance features* will include Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. It will also offer the Enclave’s innovative Rear Camera Mirror, which provides a wide, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving, and High Definition Surround Vision camera system. Its spirited and efficient performance will be paired with a purposefully designed cargo space that’s almost 5 cubic feet larger than the Encore and about 3 cubic feet smaller than the Envision. Product specifications and pricing will be announced when the Encore GX begins arriving at U.S. dealers.

  5. Chinese automaker Geely has introduced a new global brand, Lynk & Co., and their first model, an SUV developed alongside with Volvo in Berlin tonight. Geely's hopes for this new brand is to "disrupt the automobile industry and redesign the process of buying, owning and using a car". The SUV called the 01 looks like a Porsche Cayenne up front and possibly Volvo along the side. Power will come from a hybrid system comprised of a 1.5L three-cylinder engine and electric motor. Other engines options will be announced at a later time. Transmissions include a manual and dual-clutch automatic. The 01 uses Volvo's CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform - something we'll be seeing in the near future with Volvo's upcoming 40-Series. But the big story with Lynk & Co isn't the 01, it is everything around it. First, Lynk & Co will sell their vehicles either online or at select store locations. A small number of trims will be offered for each to model to help keep costs down. Prices will be fixed in all markets and buyers will have their new vehicle delivered to their home. If servicing needs to take place, Lynk & Co will pick up the vehicle. Second, Lynk owners can make money by sharing their vehicle. A share button in the infotainment system allows an owner to grant a shared key to others to drive the vehicle. Third, Lynk is giving developers an open application programming interface to develop in-car applications. Lynk says the likes of Microsoft, Ericsson, and Alibaba are helping out with building the infrastructure needed for this. Geely plans on launching Lynk & Co next year in China, with Europe and the U.S. following in 2018. There will be more models down the line (02, 03, etc) such as a sedan. 7. It seemed this day would never come, but the Fisker Karma has risen from the ashes to become the Karma Revero. Thanks to Chinese supplier Wanxiang buying the assets of Fisker Automaker back in 2014, the company would be renamed to Karma Automotive and work would begin on the resurrection. There aren't any real changes of note for the exterior aside from new badging and the 'Revero' name on the fenders. The interior does see a big change with a new infotainment system. The new system runs at 60 frames per second, can be updated over-the-air thanks to a dedicated 4G connection, and will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support in the near future. The powertrain is still a plug-in hybrid with a GM-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder producing 260 horsepower. At least the rest of it has seen some major changes. The battery capacity has been increased from 20.4 to 21.4 kWh that will give 50 miles of electric only range. The 3.3kW on-board charger has been swapped for a 6.6 kW to provide faster charges. The Revero also features the ability to use DC fast-charging at 40 kW. A solar roof on top can provide up to 1.5 miles of electric range per day - depending on weather conditions. Pricing for the Revero begins at $130,000 (about $27,000 more than the Karma) and you can place an order right now. Source: Karma Automotive, Autoblog Press Release is on Page 2 Karma Automotive Unveils 2017 Revero Luxury Vehicle COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 8,2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Karma Automotive officially unveiled the 2017 Revero luxury hybrid automobile to a select group of customers, media and retailers at a private event in Laguna Beach, CA. Orders are now being accepted for the much-anticipated, and stylishly appointed Revero. The list price of $130,000 was announced at the unveiling. Originally hailed as one of the most beautiful vehicles ever conceived, these one-of-a-kind cars embody the sensibilities of a passionate, charismatic, California-based company. The car is being built in an all new custom, low-volume production facility in Moreno Valley, California. "The car unveiled tonight was designed with a specific customer in mind. Karma customers are self-made, proud, risk-takers who love cars, and they can tell you about each one they have owned since childhood," said Jim Taylor, Karma Chief Revenue Officer. "We are building each Revero with the workmanship and attention to detail required for a discerning customer looking for a car without compromises." The Revero includes several features that set it apart. A clean and elegant infotainment system has been designed from the ground up to be fast and intuitive, and will incorporate over-the-air updates as well as Apple CarPlay. It will be the first car sold in the U.S. powered by electricity, gas and solar. The solar roof not only charges the 12V battery, but also charges the HV battery adding to the electric range. Individually hand-painted emblems grace the front and rear of every vehicle. It is a small but symbolic statement about the company's desire to give each owner a unique vehicle. The Revero is quick, going from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds in Sport mode. Owners can plug in for a battery range up to 50 miles and the gas-powered generator extends the total range to approximately 300 miles. Fast-Charging brings the HV battery to 80 percent state-of-charge in a remarkable 24 minutes.

  9. After launching a number of teasers and doing a slow drip of information, Hyundai has finally revealed the Ioniq to the South Korean marketplace. If you're wondering about the name, it is a mashup of "ion" and "unique". The Ioniq's exterior is largely diticated on aerodynamic effiency. The shape is very familar to the likes of the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. But Hyundai says the design gives the Ioniq e a drag coefficient of just 0.24. Now the big thing with the Ioniq is that is capable of having a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains thanks to a new platform specifically built for this purpose. At the moment, Hyundai is dishing out the specs on the hybrid version which will come with a new 1.6-liter four-cylinder (104 horsepower and 108 pound-feet of torque) paired with an electric motor (43 horsepower). Combined power output stands at 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic routes power to the front-wheels. A lithium-ion polymer battery pack provides power to the electric motor. Hyundai hasn't revealed the overall range for the Ioniq hybrid, but did reveal that it will travel on electric mode at speeds of up to 75 MPH. The Ioniq will debut at the Geneva Motor Show and New York Auto Show in March. We'll likely learn more details about the hybrid, along with the introductions of the plug-in and electric models. A reduction of 2.3kg per front lower arm unit saves 4.6kg at the front of the car, while 7.14kg is saved at the IONIQ’s rear with each unit shedding 3.57kg. Responsiveness and feedback from the steering system is clear and precise, with an increased steering gear ratio that helps to compound the IONIQ’s sporty and responsive feel while reinforcing the car’s ‘fun to drive’ character. Braking force is optimized to get the most out of the hybrid system’s regenerative braking system, in turn helping the IONIQ maintain a healthy state of charge (SOC). The regenerative braking system also operates to reduce noise, using the third generation of the brand’s energy recuperating stopping system. An Integrated Brake Assist Unit (iBAU) and Pressure Source Unit (PSU) also contribute to quieter operation than competitors. This also helps ensure ultra-low friction for maximum energy recuperation and efficiency. A collaboration with tire manufacturer Michelin gives IONIQ enhanced levels of efficiency as the car is fitted with low rolling resistance tires for better fuel economy, plus the car’s larger 17-inch wheels are fitted with silica tires for better performance. The multi-link suspension system has been adapted in order to work most efficiently with low rolling resistance tires. 05 Comfort and convenience: Top-class comfort, trend-setting convenience The IONIQ delivers great driver and passenger convenience, bringing to the segment a range of considerations that other dedicated hybrid vehicles may have compromised on in the past. All hybrid components of IONIQ are cleverly packaged to not compromise space, flexibility or usability of the interior. In fact, IONIQ offers best-in-class cargo space by positioning the hybrid’s battery underneath the rear seats. Moreover, the rear seats can fold flat providing a cargo space of up to 750 liters, allowing large pieces of luggage to be stowed with ease, plus flexible daily usability. It also offers great front and rear headroom, plus comprehensive shoulder and leg room in the front and back, while a memory function driver’s seat and heated front and rear seats invite occupants for a relaxing ride. 06 Safety: Innovative active and passive safety features The IONIQ boasts a light yet rigid body as a result of advanced design, construction methods and materials. Featuring 53% Advanced High Strength Steel, the IONIQ’s chassis benefits from superior rigidity for responsive handling and is extremely safe, with high impact energy absorption and minimized distortion to protect passengers in the event of a collision. To complement the IONIQ’s long list of advanced convenience technologies, a host of innovative future-ready active and passive safety features protect the driver and passengers. These electronic assistive systems are class-leading as IONIQ continues to break the mold for hybrid vehicles. The long list of active safety features includes Blind Spot Detection, which works directly alongside Lane Change Assist and Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert to warn the driver of any surrounding vehicles, passengers or other objects that may lead to a collision if unnoticed while the car is in motion. A Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) are of use when driving on the highway. The systems alert the driver if unsafe movements are made while the car is driving by sensing the car’s position in relation to highway lanes. The LDWS sounds an alarm before the car moves over white lines on the road, while the LKAS warns the driver acoustically and visually before inducing corrective steering to guide the driver back to a safe position. The car is also fitted with an Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system, an advanced active safety feature that alerts drivers to emergency situations, braking autonomously if required. Using front radar and camera sensors, AEB operates in three stages. Initially warning the driver visually and acoustically, it controls the brake according to the collision danger stage, and applies maximum braking force right before the moment of collision. When a vehicle or pedestrian is sensed in front of the IONIQ, the system is activated, operating at speeds of 10km/h or above and minimizes damage when a collision is unavoidable. Using front radar sensors, Smart Cruise Control allows a constant speed and distance to be maintained from the vehicle ahead without depressing the accelerator or brake pedals, it is automatically cancelled when the speed of the car drops to 10kph or below. Additionally, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System ensures the IONIQ’s tires are always suitably inflated. Around the interior of the IONIQ, a total of seven airbags are available. Including a knee airbag for the driver, they are placed to protect the vehicle’s occupants in the event of a collision. Body structure improvements to the car mean it is strong and durable in the event of a crash - complemented by a high-strength fiber-reinforced rear bumper.
  11. Hyundai is hoping their new performance sub-brand will help reverse a downward trend in sales. The N high-performance brand made its official debut this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show with three concepts and the announcement that production N models would begin rolling out in 2017. At first glance, Hyundai's N division has the credentials with former chief engineer of BMW's M division Albert Biermann heading the division. Biermann has said N models will be completely different from standard Hyundai models and that a development of a new engine for N is being considered. “The next step is to increase the performance and to give our cars, when you drive the car, a little bit more of a driving character. We are really going for the established high-performance brands and want to compete with them,” said Biermann. How could a performance brand help Hyundai out? The hope is the high-performance models will act as a draw for buyers to enter into a Hyundai showroom. The Korean automaker has seen sales slump due to them not being able to take advantage of the growing popularity of sport utility vehicles and crossovers. The technology that the N division is working on will also go into future Hyundai models, providing another selling point for the brand. Source: Bloomberg View full article

It features direct injection, stop/start technology and is matched with a standard six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Stop/start technology helps enhance efficiency in stop-and-go driving. The new 1.4L turbo is SAE-certified at 153 horsepower (113 kW) and 177 lb-ft of torque (240 Nm). With more torque than the current Cruze’s 1.4L turbo and a lighter architecture, the new turbocharged engine is expected to deliver segment-best 0-60 performance of 8 seconds. That makes the new Cruze quicker than most competitors, while also beating most of them at the gas pump, with a GM-estimated 40 mpg on the highway with automatic transmission. The 1.4L turbo features an aluminum cylinder block and head, which helps reduce the Cruze’s overall weight to enhance performance and efficiency. Engine efficiency is also enhanced through reduced friction, including low-friction piston rings, a low-friction camshaft drive and a low-friction oil pump. The start/stop feature automatically shuts down the engine when the car comes to a stop under certain driving conditions, such as a stoplight. The engine automatically restarts when the driver takes his or her foot off the brake. Advanced safety features The 2016 Cruze’s safety story begins with the new, stronger body structure that incorporates high-strength steel in key areas to enhance strength and crash protection by helping to prevent intrusion into passenger compartment. Cruze also returns with a segment-leading 10 standard air bags, including frontal driver and passenger air bags, roof rail-mounted head curtain side air bags that help protect the front and outboard rear seating positions; seat-mounted side-impact air bags (front and rear); and front knee air bags. Power-dense, efficient turbocharged powertrain In North America, the 2016 Cruze is driven by an all-new, standard 1.4L turbocharged engine derived from GM’s new family of small gas engines. Available safety features include an expanded range of crash-avoidance technologies, including Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist and Forward Collision Alert. Additional safety features include: Front passenger seat occupant sensing system and rollover sensing and protection system Collapsible pedal assembly to help protect against lower-extremity injuries Three-point safety belts in all five seating positions, safety belt retractor pretensioners and lap pretensioners in the driver and front-passenger positions, and safety belt load limiters (with pretensioners) in the front safety belt retractors LATCH child seat latching system in the rear seat Tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lamps Automatic headlamps. Manufacturing For the United States, the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will be built at GM’s Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant, with locally and globally sourced components. The plant received a $50-million investment in tooling and other enhancements to support the new Cruze’s production. View full article
  15. After some leaked photos made their way on the internet yesterday, Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulia at the company's museum today. The design looks to be a fusing of the 8C supercar and the 159 sedan. Alfa says the Giulia is around the “technical architecture” of the car. An example of this is the short overhangs as the engine and other parts being mounted between the front and rear axles. Now this particular Giulia is top of the line Quadrifoglio Verde (QV for short) which will take on the likes of the BMW M3 and Cadillac ATS-V. A turbocharged 3.0L V6 boasts 503 horsepower and features a cylinder-deactivation system to improve fuel economy. 0-60 takes about 3.9 seconds. Power will be heading to the rear wheels. Alfa says the Giulia boasts 50/50 weight distribution. Although no weight is mentioned, the Giulia is built with lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber. The suspension is comprised of double wishbones up front and multilink setup in the rear. There will be other engines available - a new range of turbocharged four-cylinders - and all-wheel drive. We'll likely learn more details about the Giulia in the coming months. As for when we'll be seeing the Giulia, sometime next year is what many are reporting at this time. Source: Alfa Romeo Press Release is on Page 2 World preview of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Perfect blend of the new Alfa Romeo paradigm and maximum expression of the 'meccanica delle emozioni', the new model encapsulates 105 years of style excellence and Italian technology. Its distinctive design expresses three quintessential features of Italian design: sense of proportions, simplicity and high quality surface finish. The new Alfa Romeo badge, now refreshed while preserving its legendary shape and unmistakable style, stands out in the middle of the famous front trefoil nose. The entire 'creation' centers around the driver and the promise of exhilarating driving experiences with sensitive steering, responsive acceleration and prompt shifting and braking. Rear or four-wheel drive is more than just a tribute to the most authentic roots of the Alfa Romeo legend: it is also a technical solution which guarantees high performance and astounding fun. State-of-the-art, innovative engines: a six-cylinder 510 HP, inspired by Ferrari technologies, the brand's new powertrain reference, will be introduced on the Quadrifoglio version. Performance is thrilling: from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Perfect weight distribution (50/50 across the two axles), sophisticated suspensions (the front is an Alfa Romeo exclusive) and the most direct steering on the market. Unique, exclusive technical solutions, like Torque Vectoring for outstanding stability control, Integrated Brake System for considerably reducing braking distance and Active Aero Splitter for active high-speed downforce management. Alfa Romeo Giulia combines extraordinary engine performance and the ample use of ultralight materials, like carbon fibre, aluminium, aluminium composite and plastic, to obtain the best weight-to-power ratio (lower than 3kg/hp). The model was introduced to the international press in the renovated Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy ,which will reopen on June 30 for enthusiasts and researchers worldwide. The Giulia, the top-of-the-range model sporting the legendary Quadrifoglio badge, was introduced to the international press at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, near Milan, today. It was a special event and a celebration of Alfa Romeo's over one century of history: in fact, today the brand celebrates its 105th year of auto making, a goal which it shares with a very select club of manufacturers, which is even smaller when considering the brand's worldwide sales successes and its racing victories. A.L.F.A. (standing for 'Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili', which translates as 'Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company' in English) was established on June 24, 1910. Today, on June 24, 2015, a new page of the brand which never ceases to surprise is being written by introducing a new model, a genuine manifesto which concentrates past, present and future and is one of the most brilliant examples of automobile excellence. There could be no better venue for this splendid event within the event than the new Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese. The brand's 'home' will be opening its doors to the general public again on June 30. The renovated facility hosts Alfa Romeo's most famous and innovative creations. These cars have written some of the most important pages in automotive history and are, still today, sources of inspiration for young Alfa Romeo designers. These include an elite team of engineers, designers and stylists known within FCA as the 'Skunks', a sobriquet used in industries in the USA to identify the best squads to whom the most delicate and technologically innovative missions are entrusted. Sharing a common love for Alfa Romeo and its unique concept of cars as 'mechanical creations' which transcend the realm of necessity to verge on that of the most authentic emotions and not just 'useful means of transport', the 'Skunks' have one goal: to create the Alfa Romeo of the future respecting the heritage resulting from the work and pride of thousands of people - engineers, factory workers and managers - who have taken turns in the factories, offices and on the race tracks. The new Alfa Romeo logo Alfa Romeo Giulia perfectly embodies the brand's new paradigm remaining loyal to its century-long tradition: not by chance, only who has a great past can face the challenges of the future. The respect for the brand's proud history is demonstrated also by the original badge - designed by Robilant Associati - that the new model will show to the world for the first time: the emblem has been renewed and modernised on the outside while, the distinctive shape and style elements which have made it an admired symbol the World over remain untouched. 'La meccanica delle emozioni' Five are the elements which made Alfa Romeo one of the world's most desirable automotive brands: distinctive Italian design, state-of-the-art, innovative engines, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, unique technical solutions and the best weight-to-power ratio. These are the indispensable ingredients for creating an Alfa Romeo. Just sitting in the new Alfa Romeo is like entering a new dimension which centers around the driver, firing emotions and the promise of exhilarating driving experiences. Merit goes to the sensitive steering, the responsive acceleration and the prompt shifting and braking. Additionally, rear or four-wheel drive is more than just a tribute to the most authentic roots of the Alfa Romeo legend: it is also a technical solution which offers high performance and astounding enjoyment. In Alfa Romeo, this is all summed up by the words 'la meccanica delle emozioni'. This bold, distinctive pay-off will be publicised worldwide in Italian only to pay homage to the homeland where the legend was born over one century ago. Still today, the brand carries Italian-made pride on everyday roads, on the most famous race tracks and in the hearts of millions of enthusiasts in the four corners of the Earth. Distinctive Italian design An Alfa Romeo springs from the perfect balance of heritage, speed and beauty which makes it the highest expression of Italian style in the automotive world. The new Giulia is no exception because it encapsulates three particularities of Italian design: sense of proportions, simplicity and care for surface quality. This is the 'skin' that Alfa Romeo stylists have modelled with painstaking care on the mechanical parts. In particular, the proportions are based on the technical architecture of the entire car: for Alfa Romeo the key elements were the 50/50 weight balance and rear wheel drive. In order to balance the weights perfectly, the engine and the mechanical parts are arranged between the two axles. This is why the Giulia has very short overhangs, a long bonnet and front wings, a retracted passenger compartment 'settled' on the drive wheels and muscular rear wings which visually mark the point where power is unleashed onto the road. All this translates into a very generous wheelbase - the longest in its category - but contained in one of the most compact bodies. These proportions draw the dynamic shape of an ellipsis in plan view. Furthermore, the rounded angles and the enveloping pillars convey momentum to the car creating a 'teardrop-shaped' profile which is reminiscent of the Giulietta Sprint, one of the most beautiful cars ever made. A second aspect of the Italian style is 'simplicity' which enshrouds what is in fact the most complex creative processes in industry: designing a car. It is up to style to conceal the long, complex work behind a simple, natural line which enhances elegant shapes and sophisticated Italian taste. This approach permeates the entire history of Alfa Romeo expressed by means of clean, taut lines. For this reason, the new Alfa Romeo boasts a strong identity drawn in few simple strokes: a line gouged along the sides which marks the doors and envelops the handles and, naturally, the legendary trefoil nose, possibly the most famous and recognisable style element in automotive history. Finally, Italian style is characterised by a high quality surface finish which means creating rich, harmonious reflections across the volumes. The end result is the new Giulia, a sculptured shape reminiscent of a big cat just about to pounce. The same inspiration is found inside the car. Everything is clean, essential and centers around the driver, such as the controls grouped on the small steering wheel designed to adapt to all driving styles. And more. The driver's position was 'cut' as a fabric with a diagonal tunnel, a slightly undulated dashboard and cleverly oriented instruments which convey the impression of a tailor-made suit with hand-crafted care and premium materials: carbon fibre, wood and fabrics are chosen for their visual and tactile pleasantness and assembled in such a way to make the human touch visible. State-of-the-art, innovative engines State-of-the-art, innovative engines are another characterising element of a genuine Alfa Romeo. For this reason, a unique engine in terms of technology and performance, destined to become the new benchmark of the brand, has been created for the Quadrifoglio version. The six-cylinder turbo petrol tuned by engineers with Ferrari background delivers 510 HP and exhilarating performance: for instance, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.9 seconds. Incidentally, despite the sensational power and torque output, the new engine is surprisingly fuel efficient and implements an electronically controlled cylinder deactivation system. Obviously, as all next-generation petrol and diesel engines, this six-cylinder is made entirely of aluminium to reduce weight particularly on the front axle of the car and make that genuinely Alfa Romeo sound. Perfect weight distribution A peculiarity of the new Giulia is the astute management of weights and materials to obtain a perfect 50/50 distribution across the two axles. This is fundamental to secure the typical Alfa Romeo driving satisfaction and reached by tweaking the layout and arranging the heavier elements in the most central position possible. The suspensions are as essential for optimal ride as weight distribution. In particular, a multilink solution ensuring top performance, driving pleasure and comfort has been chosen for the rear axle. On the front, instead, a new double wishbone suspension with semi-virtual steering axis was developed to optimise the filtering effect and guarantee rapid, accurate steering. This Alfa Romeo exclusive keeps the constant caster trail on corners and can tackle high lateral accelerations as a result of the always perfect footprint. In any situation and at all speeds, driving Alfa Romeo Giulia with the most direct steering ratio available is natural and instinctive. Innovative, exclusive technical solutions As a further expression of the Alfa Romeo engineering culture, the design, the build and the choice of materials of the chassis and the suspensions is always perfect. As a consequence, it was decided that electronics should only be used to make the driving experience guaranteed by excellent basic mechanicals even more exhilarating. This is demonstrated by the exclusive technical solutions present on the new car, like Torque Vectoring with a double clutch to allow the rear differential to control the torque delivery to each wheel separately. In this manner, power transmission to the road is improved also in low grip conditions. So, the driving is safe and fun without ever having to run up against an invasive stability control system. The Integrated Brake System - an innovative electromechanical system which combines stability control and a traditional servo brake for instantaneous brake response and consequent record-breaking stopping distances in addition to the all-important weight optimisation - is being introduced on the new Alfa Romeo. Together with an excellent Cx, a perfect balance of forces on corners and downforce behaviour, the new model has Active Aero Splitter, a front system which actively manages downforce for higher performance and better grip even at high speed. These state-of-the-art systems are all governed by Chassis Domain Control, the 'brains' of the on-board electronics which assigns the specific task of optimising performance and driving pleasure to each one. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia also features a renewed Alfa DNA which modifies the car's dynamic behaviour according to the driver's selection: Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficient (energy efficiency mode implemented for the first time on an Alfa Romeo) and naturally Racing (on high performance versions). The passenger compartment of the new car offers the best in terms of quality, safety, equipment and comfort with a specific, profoundly Alfa Romeo style element: the centrality of the driver. Not by chance, all the main controls are incorporated in the steering wheel as on a Formula 1 car, while the human-machine interface consists of two simple, user-friendly knobs for adjusting the Alfa DNA selector and the infotainment system. The best weight-to-power ratio To obtain an excellent weight-to-power ratio (remarkably lower than 3kg/hp), Alfa Romeo Giulia combines extraordinary engine performance and the ample use of ultralight materials throughout. For example, carbon fibre was chosen for the propeller shaft, the bonnet and the roof and aluminium was picked for the engine, brakes, suspension (including front domes and front and rear frames), in addition to many other body components, such as the doors and the wings. Furthermore, the rear crossmember is made of aluminium composite and plastic. In order to decrease the total weight, the braking system was tweaked using aluminium elements and carbon ceramic discs and the seats have a carbon fibre structural frame. Despite all this weight optimisation, the car boasts the best torsional rigidity in its class to guarantee quality over time, acoustic comfort and handling even in conditions of extreme stress.

  17. Today, BMW pulled the wraps off the sixth-generation 7-Series. The new version of BMW's flagship includes new tech and less weight. To our eyes, the 2016 7-Series looks like a larger 3-Series. The front boasts a larger kidney grille and narrow headlights, while towards the back has a short overhang and chrome tailpipes. The U.S. will only get the long-wheelbase version of the 7-Series. Under the skin lies one of the biggest changes to the 7-Series. Like the i3 and i8, the 7-Series uses a new internal structure called Carbon Core. The structure is comprised of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and ultra-high-tensile steel. Along with aluminum doors and trunk lid, BMW has been able to cut 190 pounds and maintain a near 50/50 weight balance. Inside is filled with loads of technology such as the next-generation of BMW's iDrive. The new version includes a touchscreen and a number of 3D sensors that respond to hand motions to provide gesture controls. There is a new heads-up display system and a available tablet-based control system for rear-seat passengers. The 7-Series also gets a number of chauffeur equipment such as reclining rear seat with foot rest via the optional Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package. The 7-Series will also have the option of BMW's display key. The company doesn't explain much about the key, but judging by the name, we expect it to show information about the vehicle. For the U.S., the 7-Series will have two engines at launch. The 740i comes with turbocharged 3.0L inline-six with 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The 750i xDrive gets a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Both models get an eight-speed automatic. Following those models will be the 740e xDrive. This is a plug-in hybrid model which pairs a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and electric motor. No output numbers are listed, but there BMW does say the model should travel up to 23 miles on electric power alone. The 7-Series will be hitting dealers in the summer with pricing starting at $81,400. Pace-Setting Technologies such as Antilock Braking System (ABS) first appeared in the 1978 model which also was the world’s first production car to feature an electronic engine management computer (Digital Motor Electronics - DME). Illustrating segment leadership, an on-board computer (OBC) and Electronic Cruise Control set the standard for luxurious long-distance travel. The second generation, incorporated groundbreaking technologies such as Automatic Stability Control, adaptive transmission control, anti-tapping windows with express up and down on all four door windows and moonroof in addition to the world’s first use of integrated body electronics with advanced diagnostic capabilities and Xenon Headlights (750iL). Technologies such as Dynamic Stability Control, Head Protection System and on-board Navigation System with moving map, CAN Bus technology for body electronics (5 integrated control units) and the revolutionary side-impact Interlocking Door Anchoring System defined the third generation. For the first time in the US the V8 featured VALVETRONIC variable valve lift technology. In its fourth generation, BMW introduced Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) on a sedan, MOST Bus technology for body electrical with 70+ control units on common busses and infinitely variable intake manifold. For the first time, the world also benefitted from adaptive brake lights and electromechanical parking brake and electronic adaptive headlights. BMW continued with the introduction of pace-setting technologies in its fifth generation 7 Series which hit the U.S. market in 2009. Night Vision 2 with Pedestrian Detection, Integral Active Steering, Adaptive Headlights with Dynamic Headlamp Control system with sensors measuring speed, steering angle and yaw as well as “reverse flow” cylinder heads to facilitate better packaging and minimize turbo lag defined this generation. The BMW core principle of safe transportation was assured with features such as Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning system. Active Cruise Control with frontal Collision Warning System, Dynamic Damping Control and Driving Dynamic Control assured the 7 Series reputation of safe and efficient long-distance comfort. The new 7 Series Innovative Design The 7 Series is the BMW’s flagship when it comes to innovation in design and technology. The design of the new BMW 7 Series aligns elegance of the exterior and interior with luxurious workmanship creating harmonious proportions for a distinct look and feel. The cabin is framed by predominately horizontal surfaces and lines, presenting color and material compositions that create a relaxed ambiance. The all-new BMW 7 Series will be offered in the US exclusively as a long wheelbase version, more than one inch longer than its predecessor. At 206.6 inches in length, 85.4 inches in width and 58.2 inches in height, the new 7 Series is the roomiest Sedan the brand has ever built and features class leading rear seat legroom. A smoothly downward-sloping roofline, displaying familiar BMW proportions, headlined by a long hood, short overhangs, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment highlight a sporting elegance and powerful sense of dynamics. With the clear structure and upright stance of its front-end, the all-new BMW 7 Series has a powerful presence. It is the brand’s first car to feature an Active Kidney Grille including visible air flap control. The air flap is only open when there is an increased cooling air requirement, otherwise remaining closed. This improves aerodynamics as well as giving the front end an even more eye-catching appearance due to the visibly increased number of bars in the large BMW kidney grille. The headlight units extend up as far as the grille, while the light graphic of the familiar BMW twin circular headlights is leveled off at its upper and lower edges, giving the car a purposeful and focused look. The hood is honed perfectly to fit in with the form of the kidney grille’s upper section. The lower air intake stretched wide across the front end, the chrome bars in the outer edges of the intake and the horizontal contours of the LED fog lamps and the full LED lights underline the car’s broad stance. The prevalence of outward-curving surfaces when the new BMW 7 Series is viewed from the side give the car a powerful, eye-catching appearance. The door handles are incorporated into the character line, which now takes the form of a double swage line. For the first time, the wrap-around side window frame uses a single-piece element, elegantly incorporating the Hofmeister kink. The Air Breather surround in the front side fender spawns a chrome trim strip which runs along the lower edge of the doors. Its horizontal form accentuates the car’s finely balanced appearance and low center of gravity. The exterior mirrors appear to grow organically out of the window frame. A slender stalk provides the sole connection between mirrors and car body. Generating a modern and elegant effect, this design also enhances the aerodynamics of the new BMW 7 Series. The direction of the double swage line extends into the upper contour of the body and the light strips of the rear lights. This creates a harmonious connection between the side sections and the rear end. Tail lights feature LED technology and the two L-shaped light units are connected by a chrome bar extending the full width of the trunk lid. The rear apron features exhaust tailpipes framed by chrome surrounds adding luxurious detail to the body of the new BMW 7 Series. Two non-metallic and nine metallic color shades are available for the exterior paintwork of the new BMW 7 Series. Carbon Black Metallic and Singapore Gray Metallic can be ordered exclusively in conjunction with the M Sport package. BMW EfficientDynamics The advances achieved with the latest generation of the BMW 7 Series succeed in resolving a number of traditionally conflicting paradigms: the car comes with an array of new innovations but weighs less, performance is more dynamic but fuel efficiency has been improved, and while it is more luxurious than ever, emissions are lower. Expanding knowledge, BMW i laid the foundation with groundbreaking BMW EfficientDynamics technology for the most diverse range of measures ever to have been implemented in a production BMW. The complete package for enhancing driving pleasure and efficiency in the new BMW 7 Series comprises intelligent lightweight design with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) as part of the BMW EfficientLightweight concept, a new TwinPower turbo inline 6-cylinder in the 740i engine from the BMW Group’s new generation of modular engines, in combination with innovative new solutions for honing energy management and aerodynamic properties. The use of BMW eDrive technology in the BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model constitutes yet another highlight. The new BMW 7 Series obtains an exemplary life-cycle thanks to resource-efficient material selection, new energy-efficient production processes and recycling. In order to achieve this, tangible sustainability targets spanning the vehicle’s entire life cycle were defined in the early strategic phase of development and actively implemented throughout the development process. BMW EfficientLightweight: reducing weight by up to 190 pounds with Carbon Core The BMW EfficientLightweight concept allows the new BMW 7 Series line-up a 190 pounds weight reduction in comparison to its predecessor. Groundbreaking Carbon Core passenger cell technology is the key element on the body structure. Thanks to its composite construction featuring CFRP, ultra-high-tensile steels and aluminum, the intelligent body design succeeds in increasing the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell while also bringing about a substantial reduction in vehicle weight. By using a hybrid construction of CFRP with ultra-high-tensile steels for structural elements, such as those found in the B-pillars, the design of the sheet-metal components can be adapted to save weight. The Carbon Core body is based on technology transferred from BMW i car development. The all-new BMW 7 Series is the first ever vehicle in which mass produced CFRP is used in combination with steel and aluminum. The BMW Group’s expertise in producing carbon fiber in the manufacturing of high-volume vehicles is unrivalled in the automotive sector. The new BMW flagship model pioneers the creation of new possible applications for this high-tech material. The lightweight design concept also entails the use of aluminum for specific sections of the body and chassis. For the first time doors and the trunk lid are made of aluminum. Taking suspension comfort and dynamic handling to new levels, the rigorous implementation of lightweight design measured at the suspension, brakes and wheels, reduced the unsprung masses by as much as 15 percent. Lightweight bonding technologies have been employed with near-source thermal and acoustic shielding for the engine, which enables the overall volume and weight of the insulating material to be reduced. The innovative insulation concept has the additional effect of further improving acoustic comfort. As a result, the vehicle’s center of gravity has been lowered. Following BMW tradition the weight distribution remains 50 : 50 between the two axles allowing for perfect balance of the chassis. BMW EfficientLightweight technology helps to consolidate its lead with dynamic handling and comfort. Redeveloped V8 engine and intelligent all-wheel drive The engine line-up available at the launch of the new BMW 7 Series range is spearheaded by the BMW 750i xDrive and its powerful V8 engine. This engine features a 4.4 liter displacement and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with the turbochargers located within the V-shaped space between the banks of cylinders. This redesigned V8 engine now comes equipped with TwinScroll turbochargers featuring flow-separated, bank-specific exhaust manifolds made from thin-wall castings. Engine efficiency was increased with a change in the compression ratio from 10.0:1 to 10.5:1 and the latest generation of VALVETRONIC and Double-VANOS technology. The optimized engine cooling concept with separate flows through the cylinder heads and cylinder liners includes a map-controlled coolant pump. Throughput can be restricted to 10 percent to warm up the engine faster reducing energy consumption. For the first time in a production car the intake manifold has been partially integrated into the cylinder head allowing air-flow resistance to be decreased, maximizing air-flow volume while reducing the exterior packaging dimensions. Overall, the efficiency factor of the 445 hp engine has been greatly improved. The new V8 engine is teamed up with the latest version of the intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the all-new BMW 750i xDrive. The fully variable, electronically controlled power split between front and rear wheels enhances traction and stability as well as the handling dynamics in corners. As part of the xDrive system’s ongoing development, the transfer case has been made more efficient, thanks in part to an optimized oil supply. The inline 6-cylinder engine in the BMW 740i The inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in the new BMW 740i comes from the BMW Group’s latest generation of engines. The 3.0-liter gasoline unit of the BMW 740i produces an output of 320 hp. The new engine’s crankcase, cylinder head and oil sump are all made from aluminum. The TwinScroll turbocharger features an indirect system of charge air cooling that is incorporated into the intake manifold and works in unison with High Precision Direct Injection, the very latest version of VALVETRONIC and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Not only has the efficiency of the new inline 6-cylinder engine been increased, its response is even more spontaneous. The BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model The 740e xDrive joins the BMW plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model lineup which will be available in 2016.The forward-looking character of the new BMW 7 Series is further underlined by the inclusion of the BMW 740e xDrive. In the case of the plug-in hybrid model, it’s not just the Carbon Core for the passenger cell that is rooted in the know-how gleaned from the development of BMW i cars, but also the BMW eDrive powertrain technology. The intelligently controlled interaction between a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric drive unit integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, endows the BMW 740e xDrive with dynamic acceleration on the one hand and noticeably higher fuel efficiency with lower emissions figures in everyday driving. The energy for the electric motor is drawn from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed underneath the rear seat where it is particularly well protected in the event of a crash. It can be recharged by connecting to any standard domestic power socket, a BMW i Wallbox or a public charging station. The eDrive button on the center console enables the driver to adjust the hybrid drive’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDrive basic setting, the engine’s power is boosted to notable effect by the electric drive when accelerating. With the MAX eDrive mode engaged, the BMW 740e xDrive is able to run purely on electric power, meaning zero local emissions at speeds of up to (75 mph) for a maximum range of 23 miles. The driver is also able to select the Battery Control mode, which raises or maintains the high-voltage battery’s state of charge so that electrical power can be deliberately conserved. Whenever route guidance is active in the navigation system, the predictive power management function calculates a trip-specific strategy for electric driving through to the entered destination. Eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission linked-up with navigation system The standard-equipment eight-speed Sport Automatic Steptronic transmission serves to boost efficiency with its wider ratio spread, reduced weight and optimized efficiency. A new transmission control system makes for more comfortable shifting and allows the transmission to be linked up with the standard Navigation system. The navigation-data-based shift strategy means that the gear selection can be adapted to the driving situation and the route profile even if route guidance has not been set. The shift characteristics are adjusted in accordance with the selected driving mode, so that the emphasis can be placed on both driving comfort and sportiness. The transmission also includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a Launch Control function that allows acceleration runs from standstill with maximum power and optimum traction. Features such as Brake Energy Regeneration and the Auto Start Stop function ensure highly efficient energy management. Activating the ECO PRO mode with the Driving Dynamics Control switch allows use of the coasting function which decouples the powertrain in coasting phases while travelling at speeds between (31 – 100 mph). This mode’s range of functions which are now individually programmable for the first time additionally include efficiency oriented operation of comfort functions, efficiency tips, as well as the Route-ahead Assistant, which gives recommendations for an efficient driving style based on the navigation data. The all new Air Breather and Active Kidney Grille The new Active Kidney Grille optimizes engine cooling and aerodynamics. Whenever additional cooling air is required, the Active Kidney Grille bars and flaps in the lower air intake automatically swing open. This feature tailors the amount of air for cooling the engine and brakes in a total of five stages as demands dictate. This system activates depending on several temperature thresholds as well as the speed of the vehicle. For instance during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle. Another distinctive efficiency-enhancing feature are the Air Curtains and Air Breather in the front apron and side fenders. The Air Curtain accelerates the energy-rich air flow before the front apron and guides it past the side of the wheel arch while the Air Breather guides the air flow into the front wheel arch via a vertical air inlet through the side fender. Together they provide more efficient aerodynamics allowing air to be carefully directed out of the wheel arches reducing the turbulence around the wheels. The reduction in air drag of over 15 percent compared to the predecessor models has also been achieved thanks to the cladding covering almost the entire underbody as well as the new contouring of the exterior mirrors. Chassis technology and driving experience Highly sophisticated, precision-honed chassis technology combined with 50 : 50 weight distribution and chassis control systems give the new BMW 7 Series both sharper driving dynamics and ride comfort. The latest array of innovations offers drivers more freedom of choice for configuring the ideal vehicle set-up, which means they can now opt for even sportier handling or yet greater ride comfort. The selection is made using the standard Driving Dynamics Control switch. At a touch of a switch adaptive control of the vehicle set-up, mirroring current driving style and the changing route profile can be selected. Air suspension and Dynamic Damper Control as standard The all new BMW 7 Series features double-wishbone front suspension, five-link rear suspension and Electric Power Steering combine responsiveness and performance. The standard inclusion of a front and rear self-leveling air suspension endows the luxury sedan models with ride comfort. The suspension is supplied with air by an electrically powered compressor with pressure reservoir. Even when the engine is switched off, the height of the vehicle body is adjusted to keep it at a constant level and air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, compensating for an unevenly distributed load. The level control can be operated manually, allowing the vehicle’s ride height to be raised by 20 millimeters when driving along a rough stretch of road or approaching a particularly steep driveway. At speeds above approximately 22 mph, the level control automatically reverts to its standard setting. When SPORT mode is activated with the Driving Dynamics Control switch, on the other hand, the ride height automatically drops by 10 millimeters when travelling at high speed. The advantages of the air suspension in the front and rear are enhanced thanks to the standard Dynamic Damper Control system. The electronically controlled dampers improve ride and suspension comfort adding to the sedan’s dynamic handling qualities. A variety of modes can be engaged using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, which serve to foster all driving experience such as driving comfort (COMFORT, COMFORT+ modes) or sporty, agile handling (SPORT mode). Production: Consolidated expertise ensures quality and sustainability Since 1977, BMW 7 Series luxury sedans have been rolling off the assembly lines at the BMW Group Plant in Dingolfing. The sixth generation is also being built at Plant Dingolfing which, as the center of competence for lightweight construction, plays an important role in the production of the all-new BMW 7 Series. For example, the aluminum bodies for Rolls-Royce models are produced in Dingolfing, as are drive and chassis components for other BMW production plants and supplies both the aluminum chassis and the high-voltage batteries – along with other electric drive components – for the BMW i models which are assembled at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Plant Dingolfing has accumulated experience of innovative production methods for weight-optimized vehicle components. As part of the BMW’s EfficientLightweight program the new BMWs lightweight Carbon Core-based body of the all-new BMW 7 Series benefits from the knowledge and process available. During production a unique hybrid construction method is being applied that combines carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with aluminum as well as ultra-high-strength steels for structural elements in the passenger cell. The latest generation of the luxury sedans also benefit from the direct application of highly advanced drive technology. The high-voltage battery for the BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model will likewise come from Dingolfing. Unique Carbon Core body structure For the first time, CFRP combined with steel and aluminum is being used in the body structure of the new BMW 7 Series with a completely new production processes applied in this unique mixed-material construction. The CFRP roof frame is being built for the first time as a core-free, closed structural element, bringing both the extreme strength of the material as well as its weight advantage fully to bear. The use of high-tech CFRP and the innovative production methods enhance the torsional stiffness of the passenger cell and lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity. The combination of ultra-high-tensile and hot-stamped steels in conjunction with CFRP for safety-related parts of the body benefits safety and driving dynamics. During the paint process, the drying method and temperature management are adapted to the specific requirements of the new material mix. CFRP production using water power, extensive use of recycled materials At the core of the all-new 7 Series production process is the principle of resource-saving processes and maximum possible sustainability across the vehicles life-cycle. Energy requirements for the manufacture of carbon fiber are 100 percent covered by renewable resources, with hydropower providing the electricity for the carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake, Washington. Innovative recycling processes are applied allowing CFRP components to derive from spare processed material. Around 50 percent of the aluminum used in cast components of the new BMW 7 Series comprises secondary material. Modern methods of secondary aluminum are available, with the recycled light alloy displaying the same attributes as the original material. On the thermoplastics front, some 20 percent of the material used is recycled. The inner lining of the trunk lid and parts of the door trim are made from the natural fiber kenaf. View full article
  18. Today, BMW pulled the wraps off the sixth-generation 7-Series. The new version of BMW's flagship includes new tech and less weight. To our eyes, the 2016 7-Series looks like a larger 3-Series. Premiere for Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview The levels of comfort, dynamism and effortlessly superior performance can be elevated further with an equipment option that is making its debut in the all-new BMW 7 Series: Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview. This active chassis control system which is available for all models with the exception of the BMW 740e xDrive, works in unison with the front and rear air suspension and the Dynamic Damper Control to achieve a remarkable standard of suspension, damping and driving comfort. It comprises the newly refined version of the Dynamic Drive system for reducing rolling movement at the front and rear suspensions. For the first time, active roll stabilization is now carried out electromechanically, minimizing body-roll tendencies when needed, providing light-footed sporty handling while increasing driving safety and ride comfort. Driving straight, the adjustable anti-roll bars are set to allow the suspension system the greatest possible freedom of movement for increased comfort. The comfort-enhancing effect is heightened by the standard air suspension. The new system is also more energy efficient compared to the previous hydraulic control. Beyond all this, Active Comfort Drive also incorporates an anticipatory chassis control function with Road Preview. The advance information for regulating the combination of chassis systems utilizes the driving style analysis readings derived from the data from the navigation system to help respond to the road. Redesigned Integral Active Steering The Integral Active Steering system is available as optional equipment for the new BMW 7 Series. The planetary gear set previously used at the front has given way to a variable steering rack ratio which means that the Integral Active Steering can now also be offered in conjunction with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. By turning the rear wheels in either the opposing or the same direction when steering, depending on the specific driving situation, this system is capable of increasing both maneuverability in urban traffic and agility during high-paced driving, while also ensuring an especially smooth and composed response when changing lane and cornering. Driving Dynamics Control switch with ADAPTIVE mode for the first time For the first time, an ADAPTIVE mode can also be selected in the new BMW 7 Series via the standard Driving Dynamics Control switch. With this setting activated, the vehicle set-up is matched to the current driving style and changing route profile. The system logic reacts to movement of the accelerator and steering wheel factoring in whether the gear selector switch is in the D or S position. Depending on the driving situation, the powertrain and chassis systems are configured for either sporty or comfortable performance. Navigation map data is also taken into account in order to select the ideal vehicle set-up, for instance when switching from urban driving to the highway on winding roads or when approaching an intersection. The Driving Dynamics Control switch located on the center console now sports a new design. The COMFORT, SPORT, ECO PRO and ADAPTIVE modes can all be activated directly at the push of a button, while the COMFORT button also has the COMFORT+ mode stored. Drivers have the option of programming an individual configuration for the SPORT and ECO PRO modes via the iDrive operating system.
  19. Hello everyone, I'm happy to have stumbled across this community as it seems to be a great place to chat about my passion: cars. Unfortunately, for now, I'm stuck driving a 2006 Peugeot 206 , but I'll be looking at upgrading to a newer car by this time next year. I've always driven small cars and I continue to prefer them to the gas guzzling trucks because they're fairly cheap, easy to drive, burn little fuel and they're easy to park.
