  1. BMW is losing a lot of ground in the flagship arena to Mercedes-Benz. To combat this, the Munich-based automaker is considering an ultra-luxury sedan that will sit between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost. "Just like certain competitors, we will see that we occupy with credible offers the price bracket of 150,000 euros ($170,000) and beyond," BMW development chief Klaus Froehlich to Automotive News. Froehlich also took a jab at Mercedes-Benz by saying BMW wouldn't offer several wheelbases or "varyingly thick chrome packages." Why is BMW wanting to take on Mercedes-Benz in terms of flagships? In a word, China. Automotive news says about one of every two S-Class sedans built goes to China. The sedans are mostly bought wealthy people who have a chauffeur. Mercedes also took a big gamble. Back in 2012, the brand shuttered Maybach and left Bentley and Rolls-Royce to fight over buyers who want ultra-luxury models. During this time, a massive crackdown on corruption took place and many wealthy people decided it wasn't a good idea to show off their wealth in ostentatious fashion. This caused sales of Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles to drop. When Mercedes brought back the Maybach in the form of a high-lux S-Class in 2015, buyers flocked to it as it was seen as an understated way to show off their wealth. Since then, Mercedes has introduced a Pullman version. What does BMW have planned? There have been rumors of a 9-Series though details are thin. 3. In light of the Bentley Bentayga coming out in the near future, Mercedes-Benz is contemplating whether or not to build a competitor, possibly under the Maybach name. Andreas Zygan, Mercedes director of development for SUVs tells Automotive News that the demands for ultra-luxury crossovers and SUVs are on the rise. Consider Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce are planning SUVs that will debut in the near future. "We are looking at everything that is going on with that segment," said Zygan. "There's an appetite, a market for that. When we get to that point that we expand the Maybach offering -- and we will expand the Maybach offering -- that would be a natural place to go," said Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon. Cannon points out that the German brand sells a large amount of GL-Class SUV filled with options, along with the G-Wagon. Zygan declined to comment as to when Mercedes-Benz could make a decision. Sticking with Mercedes-Benz for another moment, a product planner tells Autoblog the company believes that hybrids will be better than diesels in the long run. This is due to stricter standards in terms of emissions, which is driving up the costs producing a diesel powertrain. "Yes, diesel is technically complex, and very expensive. The additives to reduce particulate matter are very costly. You'll see more hybrids to meet the changing regulations," said a source. Combining its expertise in hi-tech innovation with the best of European design, technology and engineering has resulted in a revolutionary electric vehicle proposition to rival the conventional internal combustion engine. Together with luxury driver and passenger refinements, the range is set to redefine the benchmark for electric vehicle innovation and performance. Taking the EV further, faster The rear-wheel drive Thunder Power Sedan will exceed the demands of the contemporary driver, offering both exhilarating performance and an enviable maximum journey distance. With a choice of 230 kW or 320 kW power configurations, the Thunder Power Sedan will deliver a class leading range of over 650 km on a full charge - or over 300 km on a mere 30-minute charge. The 320 kW version will accelerate to 100 km/h in under 5.0 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Also showcasing at IAA is the Thunder Power all-wheel-drive Race model, demonstrating the technical possibilities and capabilities of the dedicated EV platform. Italian design On the exterior, the car's styling matches the impressive performance. The Thunder Power Sedan has been designed by the legendary Zagato studio in Milan, the name behind some of the most beautiful sports cars ever built. Sweeping, dynamic lines form an unmistakably powerful silhouette. The instantly recognisable grill is also an icon in the making. European engineering Over five years of research and development have gone into establishing Thunder Power's electric vehicle range, working closely with leading European specialists such as Bosch, Dallara and CSI. The result is the creation of advanced electric vehicle technologies, which set new standards in terms of performance and efficiency. Dedicated EV platform By engineering an advanced and dedicated platform from the ground up, Thunder Power is able to optimize the efficiency of the vehicle architecture allowing a series of performance benefits and advantages. Unencumbered by legacy issues, this is especially true in relation to the battery design and capacity, an area so often compromised on electric derivatives of mainstream vehicles. 6. Jeep is looking to move upmarket to compete with the likes of the Range Rover. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said last weekend at the opening of a Alfa Romeo and Maserati dealership near Toronto that brand is missing an opportunity. “When I see a Range Rover on the street, my blood boils, because we should be able to do a thing like that. And we will,” said Marchionne. At the moment, the most expensive Jeep is the Grand Cherokee which tops off at $48,795 for the Summit w/o options. Jeep is working a three-row model that will be coming out in 2016 - possibly named the Grand Wagoneer. Marchionne declined to provide any other details about the vehicle, partly due to the model not being on the current five-year plan. “Would I tell you that?. No, but we’re working on it now.” Source: Bloomberg View full article

  8. Last month, speculation was going around after an trademark application was filed by GM for 'Badlands' to be used on a future model. The speculation was this was going to be used on the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra as competitors to the Ford Raptor. But according to Edmunds, GM has no plans for a direct Raptor competitor. "We have a lot of priorities. Capital is not endless. That is not one of our highest priorities in terms of spending capital right now," said Mark Reuss, GM's executive vice president of global product development. However, Reuss isn't fully against a performance off-road monster. He points toward the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 concept shown at LA Auto Show which boasts a number of changes such as off-road shocks, front-and-rear locking differentials, and 35-inch off-road tires "We showed the ZR2 and said we would like to do that," said Reuss. 10. Tesla, the electric car startup in California has put the automotive industry on notice with the Model S. With impressive range and the model stealing sales from luxury makers, automakers are wondering how best to compete with the Model S. Car Magazine learned about what BMW has planned. Known internally as F18, the new model will utilize a long-wheelbase version of the next-generation 5-Series sedan. The next-generation 5-Series will be one the first models to use a new modular platform known as Cluster Architecture (CLAR) which will underpin models from the 3 to 7-Series. The new architecture will allow F18 - or as Car calls it the i5/i7 - to share many components such as suspension, steering, and brakes from the 5-Series. Power will come front two electric motors and a four-cylinder engine. Total output is expected to be around 400kw - about 536 horsepower. As for design, the report says it could be a mixture of 6-Series Gran Coupe and the next-generation 7-Series. Now the model is expected to come out in 2018. This date makes sense as that will be the time when the U.S.' CAFE regulation that 4.5 percent of vehicles sold must be a zero emission vehicle goes into affect. Source: Car Magazine

  12. The Jeep Wrangler really has no equal. Sure competitors come on the scene to try and take on the Wrangler, but they go away after awhile - see the Toyota FJ Cruiser as the latest example. But that isn't stopping automakers from taking a stab at it. Case in point is GMC. Buick-GMC vice president Duncan Aldred tells Edmunds that is looking at strengthening the brand by looking at the possibility of introducing new models. "We are looking at everything. What segments will grow? What segments will not? We are evaluating all possibilities that could really turbocharge the brand and the growth," said Aldred. Aldred says at the current time, GMC is in the brainstorming stage and there are no plans to add additional models. But, Aldred goes onto say "there is room throughout the range if you really start segmenting it. There is plenty of room everywhere in the hierarchy." Some of those brainstorms have included a Wrangler competitor, a flagship SUV above the Yukon Denali, and a subcompact crossover. Whether any of the models leaves the brainstorming stage remains to be seen. This isn't the first time Aldred has mentioned adding more models. Back in September, we reported that Aldred would like to see a Denali version of the Canyon. Source: Edmunds William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 14. Many people see the Cadillac ELR as General Motors' direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, but GM's head of global product development, Mark Reuss says it isn't. “People like to say the ELR is, but it’s really not. It’s a different car, it’s a different price point. It’s way-different technology,” Reuss said. Ruess goes onto say that he isn't sure if the company has a direct competitor to Tesla. So why do many people consider the ELR a competitor to the Model S? Probably from a quote from former GM CEO Dan Akerson back in September. 16. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 27, 2013 Autocar is reporting that Toyota executives are considering building a competitor for the Nissan Juke. The inspiration for this possible contender is a twelve-year old concept. The concept in question is the Toyota RSC (Rugged Sports Coupe) shown at 2001 Chicago Auto Show. While the concept was well received at the time, Toyota didn't really do anything with it. Why are Toyota executives looking at RSC as a possible Juke competitor? Sales. The Nissan Juke has been doing very well in global sales. In the U.S. alone, Nissan moved 36,000 Jukes in 2012. If Toyota decides to go forward with this, expect the vehicle to use either Yaris or Auris (Corolla) platform. The Yaris platform allows Toyota to build a direct competitor to the Juke, while the Auris platform lets Toyota build a somewhat larger vehicle. Using either platform allows Toyota to offer a hybrid model. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears.
