Jeep will be bringing a trio of plug-in hybrid variants with them to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month, and along with them, a new badge. The Jeep Wrangler, Compass, and Renegade will debut in North America wearing a new 4xe badge that will denote their plug-in status. The SUV's are scheduled for their official debut in New York and Geneva later this year. Jeep intends to have some form of electrified driving available in its entire lineup by 2022, but it could be in the form of a mild-hybrid eTorque system. At the moment, Jeep says that all electrified vehicles will carry the new 4xe but it is unclear if that really includes the eTorque models or not. We've previously seen Compass and Renegade Plug-In hybrids at the Geneva Auto Show in 2019. In those, the engine is a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 177 hp and 200 lb.-ft of torque on its own. On the Renegade, there are power variants that add additional electric motivation to bring total output to either 190 hp or 240 hp. The only choice on the Compass is the 240 hp version. The PHEVs have eAWD, where the rear wheels are powered electrically only and there is no prop shaft from the gasoline engine. FCA claims the PHEVs can travel up to 31 miles in electric only mode and reach a top speed of 81 mph before the gasoline engine kicks in to help. Jeep is rumored to be testing a Mercedes-Benz supplied 2.0 liter Turbo-Diesel in 14 test vehicles in the Detroit, Michigan area. However, it is unlikely that such a vehicle would be sold in the U.S. The most likely scenario is that this is testing for the European and Asian markets. The Compasses were converted by an independent supplier for FCA and the suspected engine of choice is the Mercedes-Benz OM654 2.0 diesel producing 192 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine was released in 2016 for the E-Class, but the engine was designed to be mounted in transverse applications as well. In the U.S., the Compass is only sold with a 2.4 liter gasoline engine. In Europe, the Compass comes with a two different 1.4-liter gasoline engines (140 hp an 170hp), two 2.0-liter diesel engines (140 hp and 170 hp), and a 1.6-liter diesel engine (120 hp). Which engine you can get largely depends on if the car is 4x4 or not. GM currently sells its compact crossovers with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel, and Mazda finally unveiled their diesel CX-5. Jeep unveiled plug-in hybrid versions of its popular Compass and Renegade crossovers at the Geneva International Auto Show today. The Plug-In Hybrid variants are powered by a 1.3 liter turbocharged engine. In base form, the 1.3T makes 177 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. On the Renegade, power ranges between 190 hp and 240 hp range while the Compass gets 240 hp through the combined effort of the gasoline engine and electric motors. Zero to 62 mph takes around 7 seconds. The hybrids use eAWD technology where the rear wheels are not powered by a driveshaft, but instead from a rear mounted electric motor. This allows the front and rear wheels to be operated independently in a more effective way than a fixed mechanical system. Greater low-speed torque is made available through the electric motors improving response on challenging terrain. The size of the battery pack was not released, but the hybrids can travel up to 31 miles or hit a top speed of 81 mph in electric only mode. Naturally, driving 81 mph will shorten the EV range. Both models will feature a special instrument cluster and infotainment screen geared towards monitoring the hybrid system. No word from FCA yet as to when we will see the Compass PHEV and Renegade PHEV in the US. The same figures – although still pending homologation – are achieved by the first plug-in hybrid Compass. Also, on the Compass, the simultaneous action of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the electric motor delivers up to 240 hp of maximum power. In addition, the new Jeep SUVs with plug-in hybrid technology are more fun to drive courtesy of improved acceleration and fast engine response. There are some vehicles that leave you scratching your head, wondering why is anyone buying them. A perfect example is the previous-generation Jeep Compass. The model had a long list of negatives ranging from a very cheap interior to powertrains that could be beaten by a snail. But a number of folks bought the Compass and its sister car, the Patriot, in droves. It offered the looks and the image of owning a Jeep vehicle without the downsides of owning something that provided a rough ride or was too expensive. Almost a decade later, we have the new Compass which hopes to right the wrongs of the previous model. We spent a week in the Limited trim to see if Jeep was able to. First impressions seem promising when it comes to the exterior. There is a lot of Grand Cherokee in the Compass’ shape with similar profiles, angled front end, and rear tailgate. Our Limited tester came with 18-inch aluminum wheels and two-tone paint that helps make the model pop. Compared to the last Compass, the new model is slightly shorter (173.2 vs. 175.1-inches). A big complaint about the Compass/Patriot was their interiors. It was easy to tell they were built to the lowest cost possible with cheap plastics, a short list of standard features, and odd design decisions. The new Compass thankfully fixes many of those mistakes. Step inside and it becomes quite clear that Jeep focused on making the Compass a special place to be in. Again, there is a lot of Grand Cherokee influence with a similar dash design and the extensive use of soft-touch materials. We like the contrasting trim pieces around the vents that help make the interior not feel as dark. One thing we’re not so keen on is the low placement of HVAC and audio controls in the center stack. It is a bit of reach to adjust the temperature or change the volume. In terms of seating, you feel that you’re sitting on top of the Compass, not inside it. This is due to Jeep raising the seats to provide the high-riding experience of an SUV. The front seats provide decent support for long trips and optional power adjustments make it easier to find the right position. In the back, there is plenty of legroom for those over 6-feet. Headroom is tight for taller passengers if you get the optional panoramic sunroof. Cargo space measures out to 27 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 61 cubic feet folded. Our test Compass came with the 8.4-inch UConnect system. Recently updated for the 2018 model year, the system features an updated interface and integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unlike other FCA vehicles equipped with UConnect, the system in the Compass was problematic. For starters, the system had trouble trying to pair an iPhone 7 Plus via Bluetooth. The system would try to connect to the phone for about 30 seconds and then give up. On the third attempt, UConnect froze and I had to shut off the vehicle and walk away for a minute before the system turned off. After doing some troubleshooting, I realized that I had too many UConnect pairings on my phone and deleted them all. After this, the system was able to connect to connect to my phone with no issues. Yes, this is only a problem to those of us who review a number of new cars. But other problems with this system would pop up such as the system taking a few moments to bring up certain functions, being unable to find my iPod or iPhone when plugged in, and the system crashing when I was trying to bring up navigation. I believe these most of these issues are isolated to this vehicle, but it doesn’t leave a good impression with the new version of UConnect. There is only one engine available for the Compass, a 2.4L four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Our Limited came equipped with a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive models have the choice between a six-speed manual or automatic. This engine has been a weak point in many Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ vehicles we have driven and the Compass is no exception. Acceleration is very anemic as the engine takes its sweet time to get up to speed. The engine is also very noisy when accelerating but thankfully quiets down when cruising at a steady speed. The nine-speed automatic is well-behaved for the most part as it smoothly and quickly upshifts to help boost fuel economy. There is some hesitation when it comes to downshifting. Fuel economy is not a strong suit for the Compass. EPA ratings for the nine-speed and AWD combination stands at 22 City/30 Highway/25 Combined. Our average for the week landed at 23 MPG. The tall height may hint that the Compass is a bit of handful when cornering, but the model is surprisingly agile. There is some lean when cornering, but the Compass feels planted and controlled. The steering feels nicely weighted and responds quickly to inputs. In terms of the ride, the Compass’ suspension is able to smooth over most bumps with no issue. We sadly didn’t get the chance to try the Compass’ off-road capability. AWD models come with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system that offers four different driving modes that alter various settings. Those who have taken the Compass off the beaten path say it is surprisingly capable. The second-generation Jeep Compass is worlds better than the original model. A lot of the changes made to this model have been for the better with a sharp-looking exterior, pleasant interior, and surprising driving dynamics. But there are two issues that hold the Compass back from reaching greatness. First is the 2.4 four-cylinder engine which feels sluggish and fuel economy is somewhat poor. FCA really needs to come up with a replacement for the 2.4 ASAP. Second is the price. The Compass Limited starts at $28,995 and our as-tested price came to $34,955. This makes a bit of a poor value, especially when the Hyundai Tucson Limited we reviewed a few weeks ago was only $300 more. Given the choice, we would pick the Hyundai. Despite the changes made by the Jeep, the Compass is relegated to mid-pack. If they can get a new engine and work on the value argument, then the Compass could be a real threat. Previous Page Next Page Jeep's compact crossovers, the Compass and Patriot, were never the vehicles they could have been. The poor powertrains, questionable interiors, and lack of features kept them well behind the pack. Yet, these two models were big sellers, but that might due to big discounts on offer. Earlier this year, Jeep unveiled the replacement for the two models, the 2017 Compass which appears to be a big improvement. The Compass' new design is a mashup of the larger Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. The front end features the iconic seven-slot grille and a similar headlight design to the Grand Cherokee. The side profile shows off sculpting along the doors and bulging fenders. In terms of size, the new Compass is about two inches shorter than the outgoing Compass/Patriot, but is about the same in terms of width and height. The interior is a huge step forward with ideas taken from the Renegade and Cherokee. Three UConnect systems will be offer, ranging in size from 5 to 8.4 inches. Interestingly, the Compass offers more cargo space than the larger Cherokee. With the rear seats up, the Compass offers 27 cubic feet of space vs the 25 found in the Cherokee. Fold the rear seats and Compass offers five more cubic feet than the Cherokee (60 vs. 55). There will be only engine on offer for the U.S.-Spec Compass; the 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard for either front-wheel or 4x4 models. Automatics are available as an option; six-speeds for front-wheel drive models and nine-speeds for 4x4 models. Most Compass 4x4 models will get Jeep Active Drive which acts like most all-wheel drive systems - sending power to the front wheels until there is a loss of traction and power is sent to the rear wheels. Opt for the Compass Trailhawk and you'll get Active Drive Low - a full-time 4x4 system with a 20:1 crawl ratio. Both systems come with Jeep's Selec-Terrain that adjust various powertrain and 4x4 systems to whatever terrain you find yourself on. No word on when the Compass will go on sale. Previous Page Next Page Jeep's compact crossovers, the Compass and Patriot, were never the vehicles they could have been. The poor powertrains, questionable interiors, and lack of features kept them well behind the pack. Yet, these two models were big sellers, but that might due to big discounts on offer. Earlier this year, Jeep unveiled the replacement for the two models, the 2017 Compass which appears to be a big improvement. The Compass' new design is a mashup of the larger Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. The front end features the iconic seven-slot grille and a similar headlight design to the Grand Cherokee. The side profile shows off sculpting along the doors and bulging fenders. In terms of size, the new Compass is about two inches shorter than the outgoing Compass/Patriot, but is about the same in terms of width and height. The interior is a huge step forward with ideas taken from the Renegade and Cherokee. Three UConnect systems will be offer, ranging in size from 5 to 8.4 inches. Interestingly, the Compass offers more cargo space than the larger Cherokee. With the rear seats up, the Compass offers 27 cubic feet of space vs the 25 found in the Cherokee. Fold the rear seats and Compass offers five more cubic feet than the Cherokee (60 vs. 55). There will be only engine on offer for the U.S.-Spec Compass; the 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard for either front-wheel or 4x4 models. Automatics are available as an option; six-speeds for front-wheel drive models and nine-speeds for 4x4 models. Most Compass 4x4 models will get Jeep Active Drive which acts like most all-wheel drive systems - sending power to the front wheels until there is a loss of traction and power is sent to the rear wheels. Opt for the Compass Trailhawk and you'll get Active Drive Low - a full-time 4x4 system with a 20:1 crawl ratio. The new model which will replace both the current Compass and Patriot was revealed last night at FCA's Brazilian Jeep Assembly Plant in Goiana, Pernambuco. As we saw in spy photos last week, the new Compass' exterior looks like a mashup of Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. The interior looks to be more like the Cherokee with a similar design and layout. Jeep is keeping quiet on powertrains for the new Compass. They did reveal that the Compass would offer “17 fuel-efficient powertrain options for consumers in more than 100 countries around the world.” Many believe the U.S.-spec Compass will come with a 2.0L turbo-four and a 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder. We know that Jeep is planning to replace the Compass and Patriot with one new model later this year, and we now have our first look at it undisguised. Brazilan outlet AUTOO got their hands of the new model before a photo shoot. We can't tell if the name is Compass or something else on the front door due to the poor quality of the pictures. Everyone seems to believe it is Compass so we're going with that. The design looks to be a mashup of Grand Cherokee in the front and Cherokee for the remainder. There is the iconic seven-slot grille up front, albeit somewhat narrow. AUTOO says the Brazilian-spec Compass will be offered with a 2.0L Tigershark four-cylinder or 2.0L Turbodiesel. Both engines will come paired with a nine-speed automatic and the choice of front or all-wheel drive. It would be safe to assume that the U.S. version will come with the 2.4L Tigershark. While the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot is just around the corner, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has made the decision to extend production of the two models into the 2017 model year. Sources tell Automotive News that FCA has a plan to end production of both models on December 23rd at the Belvidere, Illinois plant. North American production of the replacement model will begin on January 30, 2017, at FCA's Toluca, Mexico. With a month's gap, FCA wants to make sure they have a stockpile of both models until the replacement model starts arriving at dealers on a regular basis. An FCA spokesman declined to comment. One vehicle many of us were expecting to debut at the New York Auto Show last week was the replacement for the Jeep Compass/Patriot. But it was a no-show. Instead, we were treated to two new versions of the Grand Cherokee. What happened? Jeep CEO Mike Manley told Australian outlet Motoring.com.au that debut will take place in Brazil as that will be first place where the model will be built. “We decided to launch the new C [segment] SUV in Brazil. It’ll be the first plant that gets the global vehicle, so no delays — it’s on track,” said Manley. As we reported last year, the Compass and Patriot will merge into one new model. Jeep is on a roll when it comes to sales and the brand is hoping to continue that with two new products in the pipeline. Mike Manley, global chief for Jeep told The Detroit News that the brand will introduce a replacement for the Compass and Patriot at the New York Auto Show in March. Manley said the replacement will use the name of one of the outgoing models. “We’ve got two very good names, two well-established names with Compass and Patriot that continue to perform very well. It will be one of those names — which one, we’re going to have to wait and see,” said Manley. Patriot has the better recognition in the U.S. while Compass is well known in Europe. Manley also confirmed that Jeep will be getting a pickup based on the next-generation Wrangler. The truck would be built alongside the Wrangler at the Toledo plant. “Sergio and I work very, very closely on the Jeep product portfolio, and both of us have been a fan of a potential Wrangler pickup ..." said Manley. “For me, there is a historical place in our lineup for it.” More details about the pickup are expected to come out later this month when FCA has their 2016 Earnings call. The Jeep Compass and Patriot crossovers will merge into one model in the next few years. CarAdvice.com.au spoke with Jeep director Jim Morrison at the launch of the Renegade where he revealed the two models will become one. “Yes, those two models will become one,” Morrison said. “That’ll be the Compatriot.” Before you start groaning about 'Compatriot', Morrison says thats a 'fun' name for the upcoming model - i.e. not going onto the production model. You would be correct as Jeep updated both models in the 2011 model year. But Jeep apparently had a couple more tricks up its sleeve with the 2014 Compass and Patriot. The big news for the Compass and Patriot is the introduction of a six-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel drive models and models equipped with the Freedom-Drive I off-road package. Vehicles equipped with the Freedom-Drive II package stick with the CVT. Jeep says the six-speed automatic increases fuel economy by 15%. If you’re expecting a new engine with the introduction of the automatic, then you’ll be disappointed to hear that the 2.0L and 2.4L four-cylinders continue tp soldier on with no changes in the performance figures. Aside from the new transmission, the Compass gets a wealth of exterior and interior changes. Outside, there are chrome grille slats, new headlight, fog light and taillight inner bezel treatments for the various trims; optional 18-inch wheels for the Limited, and an available backup camera. Inside, the Compass gets new fabric choices. The Patriot and Compass both get seat-mounted side-curtain airbags as standard equipment.
