Award Worthiness Confirmed for Motor Trend 2017 Car of the Year - Chevrolet BOLT Motor Trend plugged in their long term Chevrolet Bolt tester 13 months ago and today they announced that they have confirmed it lived up to every expectation of being the 2017 Car of the Year. It was not just a good affordable EV that eliminated range anxiety but after 17,000 miles deserved to be praised! They do state that the CUV was not perfect as they had two software updates that fixed issues and the shifter was replaced. With that said, maintenance for the year was $0. Cost of powering the EV CUV which had a total of 154 charges cost a total of $630.58 using 69 charges at the office, 47 charges at public for pay stations and 27 times at home. This compares to driving the same distance in a Toyota Prius that would cost $800 and a Kia Soul that would cost you $1,550 dollars. Over all the write up is very good with plenty of interesting info on living with an EV auto. As they state, the only EV available today for under $40,000 that you can go buy and drive off the lot same day. The motor trend staff is ready to make the switch.   3. Chevrolet Bolt Gen 2 in 2025? At the 1 min 25 sec mark, the Bolt discussion begins and they talk about the production of the autonomous BOLT. Plenty of other EV info on BMW, MB and Kia plus so much more. I have to question the 2025 release of Bolt 2.0 as that would put the current bolt into an 8yr run which in today's society, would be 4yrs past due and very old. I more or less expect a refresh next year with a new version in 2020 as a 2021 model or 2021 as a 2022 model.

Case in point, Jalopnik reports recent filings by GM list a model called the Chevrolet Bolt Incomplete. This is listed alongside commercial models like the Cadillac XTS. But the folks at ChevyBolt.org were able to uncover a fleet order guide listing a few more details on the Bolt Incomplete. The rear seats will be removed along with the floor mats and air bags to make for a small cargo area Will not be available with either the Comfort and Convenience or Driver Confidence Packages to help with pricing 16-inch steel wheels wrapped in all-season rubber will be standard Production will take place at Orion Assembly before being shipped off to Knapheide Truck Equipment in Flint for the build out.   6. Tesla's production hell seems to be only getting worse than better. Various issues at their Freemont plant has caused the automaker to push back their goal of producing 5,000 Model 3s from late last year to June of this year. This, in turn, has caused some holders of Model 3 reservations to have their order pushed back to 2019. “As we work hard to meet demand, we wanted to let you know that your estimated delivery timing has been adjusted to a slightly later window,” Tesla said in an email to customers. According to Bloomberg, the new date depends on when the reservation was placed and what model was chosen. Tesla is trying to get the more expensive long-range battery model out first before starting production of the cheaper standard battery model. This has buyers of the latter model worried as they might not get the full $7,500 tax credit. The credit begins to phase out once an automaker has built 200,000, something Tesla expects to hit sometime this year. The move has caused some reservation holders to take to various forums and Twitter to complain. Others are deciding to jump ship and buy a Chevrolet Bolt. Reuters reports that Chevrolet dealers in California are seeing a noticeable increase of Tesla shoppers interested in the Bolt. “We’re getting the Tesla people who wanted their Model 3. We ask them, ‘What other cars are you interested in?’ They’re mostly Tesla. But they want the car now. They don’t want to wait,” said Yev Kaplinskiy of Stewart Chevrolet. Kaplinskiy said they sold 15 Bolts last weekend. David Felt - Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.cheersandgears.com Tom Moloughney 2017 BOLT Review Tom Moloughney is a well respected EV advocate that has been asked to not only review EV's, conversions, etc. but also to fun polls and surveys to find out what people think, want and need. Tom has driven many EV's including his recent BMW i3 that was totaled. GM gave him a 2017 Chevrolet BOLT in Kinetic Blue Metallic for a week to drive around and while no auto is perfect, he did find plenty to praise about Chevrolet and all they did right on the BOLT. I have listed below the full review for you to read, but wanted to quote a few things from Tom's review that are worthy in the 800 miles he put on. Quote: "Now to be clear, I know that the Bolt and the Model 3 are distinctly different types of vehicles. However, the fact that they both have a single-charge range of over 200 miles, and basically the same base MSRP, there will inevitably be some degree of cross shopping." He went on to state this is not a comparison, but wanted to just point this out. "The Bolt is such a good performer in fact, that at this year’s Refuel at Laguna Seca, Billy Kwan set a Production Class record, and even beat all of the Tesla car’s times from the 2016 event." "GM clearly wanted the Bolt EV to fit more into the “Hot Hatch” category, with above-average acceleration and good handling, while Nissan was more interested in making the LEAF a comfortable all-electric family mover." "The rear seating area is spacious and comfortable, especially for a car of its size. The outward vision from anywhere in the cabin is excellent, and that helps make the small car feel bigger than it actually is." "However, the more expensive i3 doesn’t even offer the options of a rear camera mirror, or Surround Vision that the Bolt has." "With an EPA electric range rating of 238 miles per charge, GM didn’t just simply beat competitors like the Nissan LEAF, BMW i3, Volkswagen eGolf, et al, they crushed them." "The Bolt minimizes the potential concern of range anxiety extremely well, and only the proliferation of nation-wide high-speed DC fast charge infrastructure will completely eliminate it." "While I could have discussed the Bolt’s regenerative braking system in the previous section, I was so impressed by how GM implemented this feature that I wanted to dedicate more time reviewing it." This seems like madness, but according to a report from Bloomberg, there is some method to it. Thanks to new regulations done by California Air Resources Board, automakers have to sell a certain amount of zero-emission vehicles if they want to sell other vehicles - primarily crossovers, SUVs, and trucks - in the state. These new regulations say by 2025, zero-emission vehicles need to make up 15.4 percent of the market. Since then, nine other states including New York have adopted these regulations. All told, these ten states make up 30 percent of the total U.S. auto market. Take for example Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed a couple years back they take a hit of $14,000 on every Fiat 500e sold. But if they wanted to sell Ram pickups and Jeep SUVs in California, they need to take the hit. How does Bloomberg get the $9,000 figure? That's due to a source at General Motors who revealed the estimate is based on the Bolt's $37,500 base price. A GM spokesman declined to comment. If General Motors is able to sell enough Bolts, they'll be able to gather enough credits to not only sell other vehicles which will make up for the Bolt's loss, but also be able to sell extra credits to other automakers. But the Chevrolet Bolt, due out later this year will offer a longer range. This morning, Chevrolet announced the Bolt is rated by the EPA to deliver an estimated range of 238 miles. “While range is important, we knew Bolt EV owners would want more — more space and more power — and the Bolt EV delivers. Our team took special pride in optimizing every aspect of this vehicle, especially its impressive range and ride dynamics,” said Bolt EV Chief Engineer Josh Tavel in a statement.   17. It was last January at the Detroit Auto Show when GM surprised everyone with the Chevrolet Bolt concept. Here was an electric vehicle that came with a 200 Mile range and would be affordable. Since then, GM has been hard at work getting a production model ready and at the Consumers Electronic Show tonight, the company unveiled the production Bolt. As we saw in spy shots last month, the production Bolt mostly looks the same as the concept. The front is similar to the Volt with a brushed grille and LED headlights wrapping around the front fenders. Around back, the LED taillights are integrated into the tailgate. The Bolt's interior features seating for five and a large 10.2-inch screen with the latest version of Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system. Interestingly, the Bolt will come with "Gamification" features that will pit Bolt drivers against each other for green driving awards or rankings as a way to improve efficiency. Unfortunately, details about the electric powertrain and expected range are still being kept under wraps. Production of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt will begin at the end of 2016 at GM's Lake Orion Assembly. For example, in the future an accurate driving range projection will be based on the time of day, typography, weather and the owner’s driving habits. Bluetooth low-energy – designed specifically for the Bolt EV to minimize energy draw – seamlessly connects a smart phone to the car while the owner approaches the vehicle.   18. It was last January at the Detroit Auto Show when GM surprised everyone with the Chevrolet Bolt concept. Here was an electric vehicle that came with a 200 Mile range and would be affordable. Since then, GM has been hard at work getting a production model ready and at the Consumers Electronic Show tonight, the company unveiled the production Bolt. As we saw in spy shots last month, the production Bolt mostly looks the same as the concept. The front is similar to the Volt with a brushed grille and LED headlights wrapping around the front fenders. Around back, the LED taillights are integrated into the tailgate. The Bolt's interior features seating for five and a large 10.2-inch screen with the latest version of Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system. Interestingly, the Bolt will come with "Gamification" features that will pit Bolt drivers against each other for green driving awards or rankings as a way to improve efficiency. Unfortunately, details about the electric powertrain and expected range are still being kept under wraps. "The decision is made. The name won't be changed,"said Mahoney Mahoney explained that while the two names do sound similar, it provides Chevrolet "an advantage." That advantage is the Bolt name "association with Chevrolet is nearly immediate,"since the Volt is a well known Chevrolet.   25. Last week, we brought you a report that said General Motors was going to send the Chevrolet Bolt into production by late 2016. Sources said the Bolt and a sister Opel model would be built at General Motors' Lake Orion assembly plant. Today at the Chicago Auto Show, GM North America President Alan Batey confirmed most of that report. “The message from consumers about the Bolt EV concept was clear and unequivocal: Build it,” said Batey. “We are moving quickly because of its potential to completely shake up the status quo for electric vehicles.” GM will be investing $160 million into Lake Orion to get it ready for Bolt production. It will be built at General Motors’ Orion Assembly facility near Detroit. GM North America President Alan Batey made the announcement ahead of the Chicago Auto Show. The Bolt EV concept was introduced last month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. “The message from consumers about the Bolt EV concept was clear and unequivocal: Build it,” said Batey. “We are moving quickly because of its potential to completely shake up the status quo for electric vehicles.” Leveraging the industry-leading battery technology found in the Chevrolet Volt and Spark EV, the Bolt EV concept was developed as a game-changing, long-range pure electric for all 50 states, designed to offer more than a GM-estimated 200 miles of range at a target price of around $30,000. The progressively styled concept vehicle features selectable driving modes for preferred driving styles, such as daily commuting, and it was designed to support DC fast charging. “We’re proud that Chevrolet has decided to produce the Bolt EV here in Michigan at the Orion Assembly facility,” Gov. Rick Snyder said. “Michigan unquestionably remains the global automotive leader. Chevrolet is tapping a skilled workforce that includes some of the most talented and hard-working people in the world for this cutting-edge vehicle. Chevrolet is an important part of our state’s automotive history, and Michigan-made products like the Bolt EV point to a bright future as well.” Start of production and additional details will be announced later. $200-million investment GM’s Orion Assembly, home of the Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact and Buick Verano luxury compact, and Pontiac Metal Center facilities are receiving a $200-million investment to support production of the next-generation electric vehicle. Orion will receive $160 million for tooling and equipment, and Pontiac will receive $40 million for new dies. “As one of the most environmentally progressive facilities in GM’s global network, Orion Assembly is uniquely suited to build this game-changing electric vehicle,” said Doug Hanly, Orion Assembly and Pontiac Metal Center plant manager. “In partnership with UAW Locals 5960 and 653, we’re committed to building the highest level of quality into it.” Located approximately 30 miles north of Detroit, Orion Assembly is powered by gas from two nearby landfills, which saves more than 6,300 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually. It is also home to a 350-kilowatt solar array that produces the energy equivalent to power 165 homes and sends enough energy back to the grid to power about 45 homes. “This is very exciting for our members who were facing the possibility of losing that plant during the auto crisis,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada, director of the union’s GM Department. “Our members are also proud to have their plant chosen to produce what is sure to be another popular and dynamic Chevy product rolling off the line at the Orion Assembly Plant.” View full article
