  1. In 2018, when BMW launched it's 7.0 operating system for its in-car infotainment, it included Apple Car Play for free for the first 12 months. After that, the owner was asked to pay $80 for a 1 year subscription to Car Play or $300 for a 240 month subscription. This caused a stir among BMW owners because Apple Car Play is included at no charge in nearly every other brand out there and because Apple doesn't charge manufacturers to use Apple CarPlay in their models. Models as basic as the Chevrolet Sonic have CarPlay as standard and without any subscription fees. Now BMW has confirmed it is backing away from the subscription model in order to keep customers happy. All compatible 2019 and 2020 vehicles sold will be offered a free unlimited subscription once the initial 12 months are up. Older models that have CarPlay such as the i3, i8, 4-series, and older 2-series will have to pay for a lifetime subscription. For now, Android users are still stuck without a solution as BMW does not support Android Auto in its vehicles yet.

  3. After much speculation, it has come to light that Apple did propose to bid on Tesla back in 2013 for $240 a share, higher than the sub-$200 a share Tesla is trading at today, according to CNBC. Analyst Craig Irwin told CNBC that there was a serious bid from Apple and says that multiple credible sources have told him so. Tesla is down more than 46% from its high in August 2018 when CEO Musk tweeted that he had funding secured to take Tesla private at $420 a share via a Saudi Soverign Wealth Fund, but that tweet turned out to be false, Tesla reversed course, and got Musk and Tesla in trouble with the SEC and further cost Musk the Chairmanship of the company. Now that Tesla stock is trading in the sub-$200 range, it becomes a substantially more attractive acquisition target, not only for Apple, but for other companies as well. The question remains what to do with Tesla's CEO Elon Musk. Apple's insistence on Musk's departure was apparently what killed the deal back in 2013. Reports are that Apple is working on its own car technology, but acquiring Tesla would substantially boost their progress.

  5. Whether you agree or disagree, Forbes is saying that the data is showing an end to Apple as you know it. With Apples cheapest phone costing $1,149 today compared to when it debuted in 2007, the price you paid has soared over 700% in 12 years. 2002 was the last time Apple slashed forecasted earnings and the stock has been punished since then falling 35% since it's peak in November 2018. This erased $446 Billion in Shareholder value, the biggest wipe-out of wealth in a single stock ever since stock trading began. Per Forbes, since 2001 Apple has had steady revenue growth and by this measure the business seems perfectly healthy. Looking under the hood is a different story all together. iPhone sales peaked in 2015 and to compare the completed 2018 year to 2015, Apple sold 14 million phones fewer. Key pieces to take into account from this story is as follows: 2010 iPhone 4 cost $199 2014 iPhone 6 cost $299 2019 iPhone cheapest model cost $1,149 a 500% price hike from 8 years ago. Technology is supposed to be all about getting cheaper, yet Apple has done the opposite, reduced sales, but increased prices. Example of this is the TV business where years ago it cost thousands and thousands of dollars for a large flat-screen high definition TV and today you can get a 55 inch version from your local retailers for around $500. Cell phone prices have come down roughly 92% in contrast to Apples 500% increase. In 1984 Motorola sold their first cell phone for $4,000 and now the average price of a smartphone is $320 according to IDC research firm. As Forbes states and I agree, it is amazing Apple has pulled this off and yet the future is not looking bright for them. Life-cycle disruption is coming from both China startups and Korea especially Samsung. 12 years ago research showed that only 120 million people had cell phones and today over 5 billion have cell phones. An exploding growth market is reaching maturity and getting people to fork over $1,000 or even $1,500 dollars ever couple years for a new phone when equal quality products from other vendors at a fraction of the price is going to be hard to do. Apple has responded by announcing they would stop disclosing iPhone unit sales and they are going to no longer report average transaction price. Share holders deserve to know the facts of what is being shipped and prices per unit. iPhone generates 2/3 rds of Apples overall Sales. Let that sink in that a publicly traded company is no longer telling it's investors how many phones it sells. With a stagnant product line and no real growth, Apples business is going no where under current leadership. If Apple was to cut prices to 2016 levels, it would have to sell 41 million additional phones to match 2018 revenue. In 2007 Nokia was the Cell Phone King with over a Billion cell phones sold that year and the question was Can Anyone Catch the Cell Phone King? Nokia is only now attempting to start over from the ashes of the original company. According to sources with knowledge of the project, Apple signed a deal with Volkswagen late last year that would see the automaker provide less than two dozen of T6 Transporter vans to the technology company. Apple will equip the vans with their self-driving tech and be used as shuttles around their Cupertino base. The sources say the vans are "consuming nearly all of the Apple car team’s attention". A number of former Apple employees added that the project "lacked a clear plan beyond the vans, including any near-term commercial goals." Volkswagen wasn't Apple's first choice for an automaker partner. BMW and Mercedes-Benz were the tech company's first and second choices. Various discussions would be held with both German automakers, but would ultimately go no-where as they balked at Apple's request "to hand over control of the data and design." Other automakers were spoken to, but wouldn't go far as automakers were not ready to give up control or Apple wanted " a more attractive partner."   8. iCar is a VW Mini Van According to story's at other sites, Apple is finally going to hit the road with their own autonomous auto. These auto's are going to be used to ferry employees around their new campus. Apple has partnered up with Volkswagen to use the T6 as their proof of concept in autonomous auto's. These vans will be outfitted at a VW assembly plant in Italy with the electric powertrain, sensors, software and battery packs. According to the NY Times story, Apple wanted to partner with Mercedes-Benz or BMW to develop their all electric self driving auto. This was all rebuffed after Apple wanted control and all data along with the design to be handed over to them according to people familiar with the talks. VW declined to comment on this matchup with Apple. Apple also declined to talk but insiders have said that Apples plans beyond getting these vans onto the campus is lacking in any direction and has led from the 1,000 person team of employees to just hundreds as others left for greener paths at Waymo and GM who both have autonomous auto's on the road now and will be expanding their fleet. Seems Apple who has a 50 auto fleet of Lexus SUV's that are daily testing their sensors and software and autonomous driving on ICE auto was unable to at first partner up with any auto company in the asian rim due to their requirements. Volkswagen behind in R&D compared to their german rivals and in the thick of a Diesel cheating scandal jumped at giving Apple all they asked for to gain a leg up in getting their EV auto R&D going. The original deadline to have these auto's on site and being used by the end of 2018 is going to be missed and first half of 2019 is more of a reality.   9. When I was looking for a new vehicle last year, there was one option I wanted to have: Apple CarPlay. Being able to integrate the screen from my iPhone to my Volkswagen’s infotainment system sounded like a brilliant idea! Now living with both my car and Apple CarPlay on a daily basis, I can give some of my opinions on how it has been. Initiating CarPlay is quite easy. All you have to do is plug in your iPhone into your USB and it will show you the standard screen. Once you see the screen, you’ll have some useful features at your fingertips. Choosing your music and interacting with both text messaging and phone calls all go through Siri. You can manually choose your songs, choose the person you want to send a phone call or message to or respond to a phone call or message. This makes the vehicle a true hands-free car. Text messages are read to you via Siri and when you respond to a text message, she checks what you said is what you want to send before you send the text message. This all sounds good, right? Well, it’s not a bad piece of software. But there is one massive problem. Siri. There have been times when someone would text me and Siri would decide not to have a connection when I would try to respond. Although I had full connection with my phone, CarPlay would think there was no connection available. Clicking on the text message a few times would finally let me listen and respond to the text message. Other times, I would connect my iPhone with my designated Apple cable and CarPlay would not initiate at all. At one point, I had to pull over and turn off the car to have it work again. One word of advice when you are using CarPlay and texting: keep Siri to American English. I had her in Australian English when I first bought my car and she would constantly send out a text message with the wrong words. Certain words and phrases also can’t get picked up with the speech-to-text so I would redo my entire sentence. Going back to apps, there are a few that you can get outside of Maps, Phone, Message, and Music. If you have subscriptions or downloaded apps such as Audible, Pandora, and Amazon Music, you can listen to various podcasts and music. The downside about the stock apps you have is there is no way of using third-party apps for maps, so you have to use Apple's Maps. For Maps, I found that typing in the destination in my phone then letting CarPlay launch Maps to start route guidance. For a list of all the apps you can download, visit the official Apple CarPlay page here: https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/. So is Apple CarPlay what I was expecting? In terms of reliability, no. Even if I’m driving through a location with good signal, Siri may not work. The design is sleek and familiar to anyone that uses an iPhone. I do recommend anyone to at least try Apple CarPlay before deciding if they want to have it in their vehicle.

Update: In a statement to Mashable, a McLaren spokesperson said "We can confirm McLaren is not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment," So those hoping for an Apple 570S or something else, we're going to be bursting that bubble now. Update 2: Tim Bradshaw, one of the reporters behind the Apple/McLaren story has gone on Twitter saying the FT stands behind its original report. Apple has eyes set on acquiring the McLaren Technology Group - the folks who brought us the F1 supercar and more recently the 570S. The Financial Times reports that Apple and McLaren have been in talks for the past few months about either a full takeover or strategic investment. Why is Apple interested in McLaren? The FT says Apple is interested in McLaren's technology and knowledge of using light-weight materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum. The deal if it goes through is likely to be valued between $1.3 billion and $1.95 billion. For the past few years, rumors have been swirling around of Apple building their own self-driving electric vehicle. Apple brought in engineers from various automotive companies such as Diamler and Tesla, and began work on Project Titan two years ago. But the New York Times reports that Apple has hit a few snags in this project and has decided to reset the project. Dozens of employees were laid-off and parts of the project were shuttered. The report goes on to say the Apple is now focusing on building the underlying technology for an autonomous vehicle. Sources tell the FT that the deal might not go through because of the change in strategy. Apple declined to comment when asked by Roadshow. McLaren hasn't issued a comment at this time. See Update. I came across this story posted in LinkedIn "What if Elon Musk ran Apple?" and this got me to thinking about the pros and cons of if this happened what would Apple become and what would Tesla become? The story states Apple has $200 Billion in cash on hand and could easily pay the current $33 billion market price for Tesla. Story has a mistake as they talk about Tesla $20 billion on the books for the 400,000 Tesla 3 on pre order. This is actually only $13 Billion worth at the $35,000 stated price. Yet they do point out that Elon has built a couple electric auto's, new battery storage for the home, flew a space ship to the international space station and back and now can land it upright on a floating platform and he is now working on a hyperloop mass transit system for california. The story does state that Apple seems to have lost it's mojo for innovation and even with the current competent Business focused CEO, Apple is slipping off their peak of success. So SHOULD APPLE BUY TESLA? Would this be a better way for Apple to go with their own electric self driving auto than building from scratch? List out your Pro's and Con's for what you think?

Being that Apples biggest market is the millennial crowd I am wondering if this brick of a self driving electric auto is what they really want.   15. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple is going forward on building their own vehicle. According to sources, the company recently gave the approval for the project after spending a year investigating the feasibility of it. Codenamed 'Titan', the team behind the vehicle will grow from 600 to around 1,800 people. Not much is known about the vehicle except for that it will be electric and feature some sort of autonomous technologies. A fully autonomous vehicle isn't expected till later on. The report says Apple has set a 'target ship date for 2019.' Whether that means it will be launched or reaching a major milestone in 2019 is unknown. Rumors about the Apple car have been flying around for a number of years. But this year has seen a number of people leaving Tesla and other jobs in the automotive industry to work for Apple, causing reports to intensify. Adding on this were reports from last month saying that officials from Apple met with officials from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles. Starting with the next generation Opel Astra, which will be shown in September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the integration will debut on Opel's R 4.0 IntelliLink system while the Touch R 700 and Navi 900 systems gaining the functions later in 2016. The first systems will be available starting in September 2015. Regardless of which system being used, a Projection icon will be available on the Intellilink screen which will change to an Apply CarPlay or Android Auto icon when the respective phone is connected. Android Auto requires a phone running at least Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher and Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or higher. So cruzing through the media.gm.com web site, I saw this update on the Chevy AppShop story which shows that GM has now signed Apple and Google to make the connection so that GM auto's will have a touch screen and you can choose to have the Apple Interface with Apple App Store or an Andriod Interface with Google Play store for your in Auto Touch screen Navigation with constant updates and apps.
