  1. Ford is acknowledging the trouble prone Ford Powershift transmission and is extending the warranties on them. The 6-speed transmission is a dual clutch setup meant to increase fuel economy in Ford's smallest cars. While a solid idea on paper, customers reported a number of problems with them including slippage, hesitations while accelerating, jerkiness through the gears, difficulty downshifting, and premature wear on the clutch packs. The extended warranty will cover 2014 - 2016 model year Ford Focus, and 2014 - 2015 model year Ford Fiesta and will increase the warranty coverage of the clutch from five years/60,000 miles to seven years/100,000 miles. Ford will also reimburse customers in this group who have already paid for clutch repairs out of pockets. The transmission control module will also be warrantied to 10 years/150,000 miles. In addition to that, there is a small group of customers (16%) who need a software update which Ford will provide for free. Affected customers will receive a letter from Ford with instructions on how to proceed.

"We're pleased to now offer the same confidence-inspiring protection as our commercial vehicles for our entire range of 2017 TITAN and TITAN XD full-size pickups," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. The results have been very positive, with Nissan NV Cargo and Passenger van sales up nearly 10 percent in 2016; NV200 cargo van sales have increased 17 percent through July. 5. Despite the hoopla and endless praise for Tesla and their vehicles, there are a number of owners who aren't happy with the company. Go on to any Tesla forum and you're bound to fin endless posts from owners of the Model X listing issues from poor paint quality to doors not closing. The Model S is no stranger to problems with batteries failing and the infotainment system freezing. This is a big issue for Tesla as they have been burning cash for the past two years, with a good amount of this cash coming going to repairs and warranty costs. CEO Elon Musk has promised investors to slow down the burn and curtail costs retaining to repairs. With Tesla announcing their results later today, we'll see if that promise was kept. But how much is Tesla spending when it comes to repairs? Reuters did some analysis on Tesla's recent annual report by looking at the total vehicles sold and total spending from warranty repairs and accruals - money set aside for future warranty work. Their analysis showed Tesla spent $1,043 per vehicle on repairs and set aside $2,036 per vehicle for future warranty work. The good news is these numbers are 17 and 34 percent lower than 2014. But compared to the likes of General Motors, Ford, and Daimler, Tesla's numbers are quite high. General Motors: $400 per vehicle on repairs, $332 for future work Ford: $429 per vehicle on repairs, $308 for future work Daimler: $970 per vehicle on repairs, $1,294 for future work It should be noted that Tesla only sold 50,000 vehicles last year, while GM, Ford, and Diamler sold millions. Nevertheless, spending just over $150 million of the total $700 million burnt for repair work isn't a good sign. Telsa in a statement to Reuters said it has reduced the cost of repair claims in the first year along with the amount it reserves for future repairs. Source: Reuters View full article

  7. In a memo released to dealers yesterday, General Motors announced that beginning with 2016 model year vehicles, the powertrain warranty will be shortened from 100,000 miles to 60,000 miles on Chevrolet and GMC models, while still remaining in effect for 5 years. Buick's existing 6 year / 70,000 mile powertrain warranty remains in effect. General Motors began offering 5 year / 100,000 mile powertrain warranties in 2007 at a time when public confidence in the company was low. There is no mention of Cadillac in the memo, so it looks like they will keep the 5 year / 100,000 powertrain warranty they currently offer. Also being scaled back is the amount of included maintenance. Current Chevy, Buick, and GMC vehicles come with 4 scheduled maintenance visits included in the first 2 years of ownership. That will be cut back to 2 scheduled maintenance visits beginning for model year 2016. GM says this move brings the warranties for these brands more in line with their direct competition. This is where the brands stack up for most of their respective models: Family Brands: Fiat: 4 years / 50,000 miles Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Honda, Nissan: 5 years / 60,000 miles Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep: 5 years /100,000 miles Toyota: 6 years / 60,000 miles Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi: 10 years / 100,000 miles Premium Brands: Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar/LR, Volvo, Porsche: 4 years / 50,000 Cadillac: 5 years / 100,000 miles Buick, Acura, Lexus, Lincoln: 6 years / 70,000 miles\ We obtained a copy of the memo which you can read below. 9. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Tesla Elon Musk extends Auto Warranty to 8yrs unlimited miles It is a good thing to drop into the Tesla Blog every so often as you pick up things that make you go Hmmmmmmmmmmm! Infinite Mile Warranty On August 15th 2014, CEO Elon Musk posted that the Warranty on the Drive unit would now match the Battery pack. So retroactive to the beginning, all Tesla's will now have an 8yr, unlimited mileage warranty on the 85kWh motor and battery pack. Musk states that this should have been the standard warranty from the begining and that the electric motors are more reliable than a more complex moving parts, oily residue polluting gas engine that gets gummed up. To the investors, he does acknowledge that in the short term this will have a negative effect on Tesla as they build up their warranty reserves above current levels as required. With this announcement it does make one think and brings up questions! How many auto's have had electric motor and or battery failures to date? Is this to push off or make go away lawsuits by current auto owners over battery and electric motor issues? What is Tesla trying to hide? Is this a shell game to hide profits? Is this a move to account for on going cash drains? Is this to make you equal to Toyota Prius family warranty of 8 yrs / 100,000 miles warranty on powertrain and battery? Questions, Questions, Questions, What is Elon Musk hiding? What is your thoughts?
