  1. Jeep shared some more details of the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer S today. While it shares its name with the Ram 1500-sized Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep is billing this new entry to its lineup as a mid-size. Looking roughly similar to the Grand Cherokee in size, the Wagoneer S cuts a more athletic profile. While no performance specs were released with this announcement, Jeep has previously said it is targeting 600 horsepower, a 3.5-second 0-60 time, and up to a 400-mile range. We will have to wait and see if those numbers hold up. The Wagoneer S will maintain some off-road prowess in spite of its city looks with a Selec-Terrain dial to adjust the S for various surface conditions. Standard features will include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof and a McIntosh 19-speaker, premium flagship audio system. Interestingly, as the Jeep Wagoneer S is built on the Stellantis STLA-Large platform, Jeep could also offer this as a gasoline hybrid as well, though no hints of that have been made. Dodge released a few teaser images of the 2025 Charger on social media, saying it will be "available later 2024" Since these announcements started last week, it isn't surprising that Stellantis revealed the STLA-L platform. This will underpin six unspecified vehicles from Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Chrysler. Interestingly, STLA Large can accommodate hybrid and internal combustion powertrains. The EV platforms will be available with either a 400- or 800-volt architecture. Reports online say the Dodge Charger will be offered as an EV and an ICE possibly with the Hurricane 500+ horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six. Keeping with engines, STLA-L supports transverse and longitudinal engine layouts and limited-slip differentials. Stallantis points out that STLA-C can handle "extreme power that will outperform any of the existing Hellcat V8s". Since Dodge's Challenger SRT Demon 180, the swan-song for the Challenger makes 1,025 horsepower, there could again be Challengers with over 1,000 horsepower. Jeep's Wagoneer S has 4xe capability with all-terrain management, advanced Jeep brand-focused technology while producing 600 horsepower with 0-60 MPH in around 3.5 seconds. Stellantis is providing two battery capacities from 85.0 to 118.0 kWh, although we don't know if that is net or gross capacity. These EVs have a targeted driving range of 500 miles for sedans with an 800-volt architecture. These estimates are for the more optimistic WLTP test, so the real range should be around 425, still very impressive. Stellantis says that it will use silicon carbide for the semiconductor material which is used to minimize power loss. Porsche does the same with its PPE platform in the upcoming Macan EV. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will allow these powertrain performance upgrades during the course of the vehicle's life. During an announcement that FCA will be building a new manufacturing plant in Detroit, FCA let it known that in addition to the forthcoming full-size Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs, another new 3-row SUV was in the works for Jeep. Auto Express UK reports today that this new SUV will technically be a 3-row version of the Grand Cherokee, but Jeep President and FCA Boss Mike Manley thinks it will not wear the Grand Cherokee name, instead taking on an new moniker. His reasoning for not re-using the name is that the Grand Cherokee is such an iconic name and image. It would be like if Jeep dramatically changed the Wrangler, he'd face a customer revolt. The last 3-row SUV Jeep sold was the 2006 - 2010 Jeep Commander. Jeep currently uses the Commander name on the Grand Commander, based on the smaller Cherokee, as a China-Only model. Manley says that the segment the Grand Cherokee plays in covers both 2-row and 3-row SUVs, so the Grand Cherokee has only been covering about 40% of the potential market. Moving into this segment would allow Jeep to compete more directly with the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot. FCA already sells a vehicle in the 3-row segment with the Dodge Durango which also rides on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. No future plans have been announced for the Dodge Durango, so it could be that this Jeep will take over for the Durango in the FCA lineup. FCA hopes to break ground on it's new facility by the end of 2nd quarter 2019 and have the first of the new 3-row SUVs rolling off the line by the end of 2020 as 2021 models. But now the air has been cleared as to the Wagoneer project. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed this week at Detroit Auto Show that the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer would use a body-on-frame chassis that will underpin the next-generation Ram 1500, not the unibody platform that we have been hearing for the past couple of years. Jeep CEO Mike Manley told Car and Driver that the Grand Wagoneer would use a stretched version. “It’s a place we’ve been, we walked away from it, now we’re going to be strong again,” said Manley, referring to the previous Grand Wagoneer. But now the air has been cleared as to the Wagoneer project. Allpar lists a number of variations from being a extremely luxurious Grand Cherokee to a lengthed version of the current Grand Cherokee.
