  1. The next member of the Volvo 90 Series family, the S90, will go on sale next month in the U.S. Anders Robertson, product manager for the 90 series at Volvo Car USA tells Automotive News the company expects to sell about 15,000 S90s during the first full year of sales. For some perspective, the segment that the S90 competes in - the midsize luxury sedan - sells around 300,000 vehicles per year. That means Volvo is hoping to capture about five percent of the segment sales. That sales goal seems a bit small, but there is some reason for it. The S80, Volvo's previous flagship sedan only sold 1,887 models last year. The best sales came in 2007 when 12,347 S80 sedans were sold. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)

  5. As Volvo gets the S90 ready for its debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week, the Swedish automakers believes the model will be able to compete head-on with the Germans. "It is really important for us to introduce the S90 and to be credible in the segment. It is about the journey we are making as a brand," said Bodil Eriksson, Volvo Cars of North America's executive vice president for marketing to Automotive News. Volvo is aiming the S90 at the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Eriksson says the company is expecting to sell between 5,000 to 7,000 S90s in the U.S. this year. The number increases to 15,000 to 20,000 units in 2017, the first full year of S90 sales in the U.S. Most of those sales "It would be one of our most important cars," said Eriksson. But how does Volvo plan to set itself apart from the likes of 5-Series and E-Class? Both models sold almost 50,000 units in 2015. Eriksson said a combination of Scandinavian design and easy-to-use technology are some of the keys to it. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required) View full article

  7. The next step in Volvo's lineup revitalization plans was revealed today in Gothenburg, Sweden. The 2017 Volvo S90 will take the place of the long-running S80 as the automaker's biggest sedan. Just one look at the S90 and you can tell that it is an all-new model. The front end is very reminiscent of the XC90 crossover with a chrome grille and headlights with the distinctive 'Thor's Hammer' LEDs. Around back is trunk lid that reminds us of the Concept Coupe from a few years back. Moving inside, the S90 gets leather, metal and wood trim, and Volvo's Sensus Connect touchscreen system. Volvo will offer three engines for the S90 at launch; a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder (T5), a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L four (T6), and a plug-in hybrid powertrain (T8). Volvo says the S90 will boast "world-first safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features" as part of its Vision 2020 initiative to eliminate automotive casualties in its vehicles by the end of this decade. Volvo will talk about these at a later date. The 2017 Volvo S90 will make its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Source: Volvo Press Release is on Page 2 Volvo Cars Debuts the S90 Luxury Sedan Gothenburg, Sweden (Dec. 2, 2015) Volvo Cars debuted the highly-anticipated Volvo S90 luxury sedan in Gothenburg, Sweden today on the heels of the company’s award-winning Volvo XC90 SUV. The all-new Volvo S90 sedan is a bold entry into the luxury sedan market and sets a new standard with superior materials, technology, comfort and class-leading semi-autonomous features. “With $11 USD billion of investment over the past five years we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be – we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group. The Volvo S90 will combine Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety and cloud-based applications and services. The interior makes use of the Sensus Connect touchscreen that debuted in the XC90, providing a clutter-free interior with minimal dashboard buttons. “Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group. The Volvo S90 introduces another step toward Volvo’s Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020, through world first safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features. Three engine choices will be available: the award-winning four-cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged T6 engine, the turbocharged T5 variant and the clean and powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. “The S90 has taken a big step forward in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group. The S90 will follow a legacy of strong sedan sales for Volvo Cars in the United States. Over the last several years, Volvo sedans have enjoyed significant demand at launch, with the last luxury sedan outselling robust competitors in its segment. Volvo Cars has seen an 18% growth in US car sales so far in 2015. The all-new 2016 XC90 has received strong demand from American drivers along with the XC60, which has enjoyed 31% growth in US sales. “The S90 is a terrific addition to the Volvo Cars lineup in the United States,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “it will continue the terrific sales momentum Volvo Cars has gained within the last year.” View full article

  9. Volvo has announced that its flagship sedan, the S90 will be debuting at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Along with this announcement, Volvo has released some teaser images of the production model. The first shot which gives us a look of overall profile matches up to the concepts Volvo has been showing in the past couple of years, along with the Thor's Hammer headlights that are standard on the XC90 crossover. The other shot previews the rear which reminds us of the Concept Coupe. The S90 will be the second model in Volvo's lineup to utilize the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and will likely share powertrains with the XC90. There is also talk of a wagon version as well. Source: Volvo Press Release is on Page 2 Volvo Cars to develop next generation automotive technologies with Microsoft Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, will work together with Microsoft, the leading platform and productivity company, to jointly develop next generation automotive technologies. The two companies today revealed how Microsoft HoloLens, the world's first fully untethered holographic computer, might be used in future to redefine how customers first encounter and explore a car, as well as how cars might be bought and sold in future. Areas of future collaboration between the two companies could include autonomous driving technologies and the utilisation of data generated from connected cars to create new services. Today's HoloLens demonstration was conducted at Microsoft's global headquarters in Redmond, USA, and showed how mixed reality might be used by customers to configure cars in three dimensions. With HoloLens, a powerful, wearable computer, holograms are mixed into the physical world. "HoloLens offers the freedom to create a bespoke experience which customers can steer themselves. Imagine using mixed reality to choose the type of car you want – to explore the colours, rims, or get a better understanding of the features, services and options available," said Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Service at Volvo Cars. He added HoloLens technology might also liberate dealers from more traditional sales environments and allow them to take a car configurator out on the road in small Pop-Up stores, shopping malls or on the high street, opening up new sales channels and introducing cars to a far larger potential audience. At the HoloLens demonstration today, participating journalists were also given a mixed reality preview of Volvo's new S90 premium sedan, which will be unveiled in reality at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Today's event offered an indication of the potential of mixed reality to transform the relationship between the customer and the car. Journalists were able to experience Volvo's new sedan and its latest autonomous driving technology in 3D before the car has even been built and launched. "We are thrilled to be working with Volvo Cars to reimagine what is possible in car design, discovery and purchasing. We are excited to be at this intersection of technology and human-centric design with Volvo," Scott Erickson, Senior Director, Microsoft HoloLens at Microsoft Corp. Today's demonstration marks the beginning of longer term cooperation between Volvo and Microsoft that will embrace a range of new technologies, all of which have implications for the automotive industry. One area of focus will be autonomous driving. Volvo Cars is a pioneer in car safety and is leading the way when it comes to connected cars and autonomous driving. It has announced a programme called Drive-Me in which 100 self-driving and connected cars will be given to real customers on real roads around the Swedish city of Gothenburg by 2017, the world's largest autonomous driving experiment. Other areas of cooperation are expected to include how information gathered by cars and their drivers can be used to enhance the driving experience and the possibility of using predictive analytics to improve safety. "We are extremely happy to innovate with Microsoft in the field of future mobility," said Klas Bendrik, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Volvo Cars. "Today's technology will allow us to achieve not only a more sustainable and crash-free future but also new benefits for our customers and society. Together with Microsoft we aim to pioneer in this field." View full article

Together with Microsoft we aim to pioneer in this field."
  11. While the spotlight at Volvo has been on the new XC90, the Swedish automaker is readying an encore with the replacement for the S80 flagship, the S90. A spy photographer caught a heavily camouflaged S90 mule undergoing some testing this week. While we can't make out all of the styling cues that the S90 will feature, there are a couple of key items we can. First, Volvo looks to giving the S90 a broad grille that first debuted on the XC90. Also, the front headlights appear to have a set of LEDs running across the middle. Rumors have the S90 taking some design ideas from the recent Concept Estate. Volvo will be using their Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform for the S90. Power will likely include the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 316 horsepower (T6) and the plug-in hybrid T8. The S90 is expected to debut sometime later this year. Source: Carscoops View full article
