  1. There will be one less engine option for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain come the 2020 model year. The Car Connection first reported the news on the Equinox yesterday morning, while Autoblog followed with the Terrain news later in the day. Both stories reported the same reason for cancellation, they didn't sell. "We did discontinue the diesel engine option in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox due to low demand," said Chevrolet spokesman Kevin Kelly. The news doesn't come as a shock to us. Diesel engines have gotten a bad rap since the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal came to light, causing sales to drop. The value argument was also tough for both models. A diesel Equinox started at $30,795. But only for $100 more, you could have gotten into the 2.0L turbo-four that offered better performance. Over at the Terrain, the diesel cost around $2,000 more than the 2.0 turbo-four. Diesel fuel is more expensive than its gas counterpart as well. That will leave the upcoming Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-D as the only diesel option in the compact crossover class. But as we have noted previously, the diesel option is quite expensive (begins at $42,045) and fuel economy figures are disappointing (27 City/30 Highway/28 Combined). 3. Porsche was planning to do a plug-in hybrid variant of the next-generation 911, but it seems those plans have been scrapped. August Achleitner, head of 718 and 911 development revealed to Car and Driver revealed that plug-in 911 project was canceled last year. Two issues ultimately brought the downfall to this project. First was the plug-in hybrid 911 wouldn't have the same driving dynamics as the standard 911 due to additional weight brought on by the hybrid components. Second is Porsche would not be able to make the same profit margins as they do on other 911 models. “In the end, the disadvantages outweighed the advantages,” said Achleitner. 5. Infiniti has quietly shelved plans to build the LE electric concept car. Introduced back at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the LE was Infiniti's version of the Nissan Leaf in a sleek four-door sedan. The big story about the LE was that it used inductive charging - a driver could drive the LE over a plate which would allow the vehicle to charge. Originally, the LE was expected to go into production in 2014, but it never came to fruition. "We have to be a little pragmatic," said Michael Bartsch, Infiniti's vice president for the Americas to USA Today. Bartsch explained that the company needs to focus on high-volume segments. Now that doesn't mean Infiniti has cancelled the LE project. The automaker could be waiting on improvements such as range from the battery. Source: USA Today View full article

  7. The rumors of Cadillac working on a three-row crossover have been running around for the past couple of years, with the most recent coming from Global Cadillac President Robert Ferguson who said the crossover could wear the Escalade nameplate, but a decision hadn't been reached. Wards Auto reports that a decision has been reached; the three-row crossover has been shelved. Sources tell Wards that the proposed Cadillac crossover would compete too closely with the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia. The decision comes late in the development of the next-generation large crossovers which are due out as early as 2016 and will utilize a new Theta/Lambda platform. Cadillac is likely going to get a crossover utilizing this new platform, but in a smaller size with only two rows of seats. Source: Wards Auto William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears.
