  1. Kia has been trying to position itself as the sporty brand to help differentiate it from sister brand Hyundai with mixed success. But a report from Reuters says Kia is working on something that should give it the sporty image it has been desiring. According to two sources, Kia is working a rear-drive sports sedan to compete against the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Codenamed CK, the model will feature three different engine options and will begin production next May. As Kia has no luxury brand, it is trying to position itself as a sporty brand," a source tells Reuters. Kia hopes the new sedan is able to replicate the massive success of the Soul. "Kia hit a home run with the Soul - they figured out how to keep it fresh and fun," said Dave Sullivan, product analysis manager for AutoPacific. "Apply this formula to a rear-wheel drive sedan and they might be able to go after a younger consumer who is bored with the played-out BMW 3-Series but wants to move out of their Soul they have had since college." The new sports sedan would be the first one to come out of either brand. Built during the mid to late eighties, these three were some of quickest vehicles on the market thanks to a 3.8L turbo V6 and didn't share the old person image that the other Buicks had. Now, the Grand National, T-Type, and GNX could be making a return to the Buick lineup. Inside Line has learned from a 'reliable source' that GM is planning to resurrect the three nameplates onto a new RWD sedan. The sedan will use the Alpha RWD platform and be around the same size as the Cadillac ATS. The sedans will also share steering, brakes and suspension from the ATS. The Grand National and T-Type will share powertrain and suspension calibrations. The only difference between the two will be colors you can order: T-Type will come with a full color lineup, Grand National will come in black only. Power is highly rumored to be a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6, expected to produce between 350 and 400 horsepower. As for the GNX, that will likely use a V8 engine (possibly the new LT1). Transmissions will be a six-speed manual and automatic. Now whether this actually comes to fruition or now is the big question. However, the 2000's brought a sea change to Lincoln. The RWD philosophy was pushed away, going towards a FWD/AWD ideology, which has brought mixed results. Car & Driver is reporting that Lincoln could be be heading back to the RWD camp. According to the report, Lincoln wants access to the 2015 Ford Mustang, which is reportedly using a MacPherson front and new independent rear suspension. If this was to happen, Lincoln would be able to better compete with brands like Cadillac and Lexus. For an example, a RWD platform could give Lincoln a true competitor to the BMW 3-Series, Cadillac ATS, and Lexus IS to name a few. Even though Lincoln officials will still insist that the MKZ is their competitor to those vehicles, the MKS is better suited to the Lexus ES. Car & Driver says the RWD architecture could also be used to better place the MKS. Instead of being an awkward Ford Taurus in Lincoln garb, a RWD MKS could give Lincoln a fighting chance in the mid-size luxury sedan class. Furthermore, a true RWD flagship could be in the wings, but that might not happen due to the Mustang's platform would need to be overhauled and stretched to handle it. However, there are a couple complications to the RWD Lincoln. For one, the RWD sedan would need an AWD option to succeed in the snow belt. Modifying the Mustang's platform to have an AWD system could be difficult. The other complication is Ford. Ford's current track record with doing a new RWD platform for new sedans has been nil. Even if the Mustang platform for Lincoln was approved, Ford executives would want a version, pointing to a quick payoff and volume. Also, the low sales and relatively high costs for the first generation could cause Ford to have second thoughts. But if Ford wants to have Lincoln survive, many would agree to go for it. At the moment, Chevrolet isn't saying much about specifics. It is the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States. Chevrolet has a long history of using the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates.
