In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Ford is accused of falsifying fuel economy numbers in the Ford F-150 and Ford Ranger. The suit is seeking class-action status and aims to collect $1.2 Billion in damages. The law firm, Hagens Berman, says that consumers are spending up to $2,000 more in fuel over the lifetime of the truck due to misleading EPA numbers. Back in February of this year, Ford launched an investigation into its own EPA emissions and fuel economy certification process after an anonymous tip line at Ford received concerns that there were issues with the test. The concern surrounds Road Load, a vehicle-specific resistance level used in dynamometer testing. Too much or too little resistance will alter the results of the emissions and fuel economy. Road load is determined through engineering estimates that are then validated on the track. Ford already hired an outside firm to investigate their testing, with the Ranger the first to go through re-testing. The suit alleges that the F-150, by far Ford's best selling vehicle, is also subject to the same issue as the Ranger. Ford is declining to comment on the lawsuit at this time.

Does anyone else notice a big drop in fuel economy when using the air conditioning? For people with automatic climate control do you ever manually turn off the air conditioner?

The Trump Administration and the EPA officials have scrapped all further talks with California and canceled the $929 million in federal funds for a California high-speed rail project. California's Governor has responded that this is in response to California leading a 16 state coalition challenge to President Trump's national emergency to take funds from the defense department and apply it to building a wall from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. California has already filed suit to block the Trump administration proposal to roll back federal fuel economy targets for 2022-2025. CARB Chair Mary Nichols is on record that they are willing to work with the auto industry in giving more flexibility to comply with the greenhouse gas limits. This came as the White house administration instructed the EPA to break off talks before Christmas and have not responded to any suggested areas of compromise by California and the 19 states they are representing nor the auto industry suggestions for compromise. While FCA declined to comment, GM and the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers did not respond to a request for comment. Ford has stated they are very disappointed in the failure of continued talks. Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of global operations said in a statement: "The auto industry needs regulatory certainty, not protracted litigation." The auto industry is on record as opposing freezing the emissions / fuel efficiency standards to 2020 levels but also want relief from the roughly 5 percent annual carbon reduction targets for all vehicle classes fuel efficiency. Ford Launching Investigation Into Its Own Emissions Certifications
Drew Dowdell posted an article in Ford
Ford is launching an investigation into its own emissions and fuel economy certification process according to a statement released by the company. The issue was brought to light back in September when a number of employees reported concerns through Ford's internal Speak Up channel. The concern surrounds Road Load, a vehicle-specific resistance level used in dynamometer testing. Too much or too little resistance will alter the results of the emissions and fuel economy. Road load is determined through engineering estimates that are then validated on the track. Ford is evaluating changes to the road load determination process. The company is quick to point out that none of the potential concerns involve the use of defeat devices and that no determination has been made on the need to restate Ford's fuel economy or emissions labels. Ford has hired an outside firm to conduct an investigation into Ford's current processes and has shared their findings with both the EPA and CARB. The first vehicle to be re-evaluated is the 2019 Ford Ranger with others to follow. -

When the Ford Ranger returns to the US market in a few weeks, the EPA window sticker will be a primary strong selling point. The EPA estimates for the Ranger have been announced and it beats any other gasoline powered pickup on the market. The two-wheel drive Ranger will have a 21mpg city / 26 highway / 23 combined rating. That combined rating ties the combined rating of the diesel-powered Chevy Colorado. The 4wd model gets a 20 city / 24 highway / 22 combined rating of which the city and combined rating are the highest in the class. The Ranger starts around $25,395 and offers only one engine, a 2.3 liter 4-cylinder, that will tow and haul more than the V6 offerings from Nissan, Toyota, and Ford. The U.S. mid-size truck market is heating up with Ranger as just the newest entry in the mix. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator will be arriving next year but has not yet been rated by the EPA.

According to this Bloomberg report, Mercedes-Benz is overstating the MPG on their auto's with MPG exceeding 50% on their new A, C & E class auto's. This report by Brussels-based Transport & Environment also seems to imply that Mercedes-Benz also has a NOx problem with their own diesel fleet. Mercedes-Benz is pushing for a universal world wide light vehicle test procedure that would measure tail pipe emissions and MPG / MPK so that a single standard is built for the world wide market that they would like to take place in 2017.

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Elio Motors Ultra High Mileage Auto / Trike? Elio Motors is promising to have on the market next year an 84mpg $6800 2 person auto / Trike. This 3 wheel transportation has a configuration like most 3 wheel modern motorcycles with 2 steering wheels in front and a single drive wheel in back. Unlike Can-Am bikes where you still get wet, the Elio is fully enclosed auto. So what do you get for $6800? Exterior measurements are as follows: Overall Length: 160.5″ Overall Height: 54.2″ Front Wheel Track: 66.8″ (center rim to center rim) Wheelbase: 110″ (center of front wheels to center of rear wheel) Interior measurements are as follows: Headroom: Driver 39.8 Passenger 36.4 in Seat width: Driver 20.6 Passenger 25.3 in Interior Shoulder Width: 26.8 in Front seat Legroom: 42.7 in Rear seat Legroom: 33.1 in Elio has been designed to fit 95% of all men. An inline, 3 cylinder, .9 liter, 55 HP, fuel-injected, SOHC gas-powered, liquid-cooled, automotive engine. 5-speed manual or automatic. 8 Gallon fuel tank with 84mpg highway and 49mpg city. Elio Motors So this begs the following questions: Can Elio deliver on their promise of a $6800 2 person auto? How or will the Big auto companies respond? Being an enclosed auto with 3 wheels will it have to conform to all the regular 4 wheel auto safety requirements? Would you be interested in driving this auto? Yes there could be many more questions but these first four questions I believe are important to discuss. What do you think?

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Auto's Needing a Diet! Featured on MSN Auto but written by Motor trend I found the story of 15 cars that should go on a diet an interesting read. They do offer their own list of which auto's these 15 should be more like and they are those that lead the segment in lightest weight and why we want lighter auto's. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/research/15-cars-that-should-go-on-a-diet/ss-AA8urEK?ocid=UP94DHP#image=1 You can review the story above to see which auto's they compare each one too. I for one am thinking of the question, what other auto's deserve to go on a diet and should be on this list instead of the 15 listed. What are your thoughts? #15 - Bentley Continental GT Convertible - 5400lbs #14 - Lexus RC F - 4000LBS #13 - Mercedes Benz S550 - 4700lbs #12 - Dodge Challenger - 3800lbs minimum with V6, 4000lbs + with V8's and options #11 - GMC Terrain - 3900lbs with 4 cylinders, Denali edition with V6 passes 4000lbs #10 - RAM 1500 - 5100lbs #9 - Ford Taurus - 4100lbs with EcoBoost I-4 #8 - Buick Enclave - 4700lbs #7 - Bentley Mulsanne - 5900lbs #6 - Lexus LX 570 - 6000lbs #5 - Ford Edge - 3900lbs #4 - Dodge Dart - 3200lbs #3 - Hyundai Genesis Sedan - 4100lbs #2 - Chrysler 200 - 3500lbs #1 - Chevrolet Sonic - 2700lbs With the first question asked of what other Auto's this got me to thinking about a few more questions but I will start with my original question. 1) What other auto's deserve to go on a diet and be put on this Bloat List? 2) Do all Auto's need to go on a diet just because of MPG or is there a valid reason to keep an auto heavier? 3) Over the next 15 years, which top 3 materials will make up auto's? Aluminum, Carbon Fiber, Plastic, High Strength Lite steel, etc. 4) Will we come to a point where using lite materials cause more bodily harm than using steel with engineered crumple zones? 5) At what point does weight reduction not play a big role affecting Diesel, Petrol, CNG, or Electric powertrains? 6) Why do other industries not have to become more fuel efficient? 7) When does the Marine industry have to finally start building efficient powertrains like the auto industry? Example many boats consume gallons per hr for a mere nautical mile. Using the Bayliner 215 model, top speed (46.7mph) has the boat consuming 19 Gallons per Hour. At best cruising speed (22 mph) you are consuming 5.2 gallons per hour or the equal of 4.3 miles per gallon. These are just some questions that this brings up. Sound off on your thoughts about the weight of Auto's and their fuel consumption.

Reuters reports that the Fiat CEO at a conference on Wednesday was being bluntly honest when he said do not buy the 500e. To quote the CEO; "We loose $14,000 on each 500e we sell." He went on to state that they would sell the minimum required to keep selling their auto's in the US and in states like California. He also went on to say that by 2025 3/4 of the auto's they sell will be Hybrids to meet the Governments mandated MPG fuel requirements. The full story was published here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/21/chrsyelr-ceo-evs-idUSL1N0O71MS20140521?feedType=RSS This story makes me ask the following question. If people keep saying that Electric Auto's are outselling the early days of Hybrids, then why are there not more electric auto's? We see a growing list of auto's with the option of CNG or Hybrid.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 4, 2013 The Environmental Protection Agency announced plans to release their results of fuel economy audits done on twenty vehicles. Christopher Grundler, head of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality tells Automotive News the audits looked at a specific portion of the test cycle known as the coast-down test. The coast-down test has a vehicle run up to 80 MPH and then is allowed to glide to a stop. This test measures the aero of the vehicle, the rolling resistance of the tires, and amount of friction in the drivetrain. That data is then put into a dynamometer that an automaker uses to run its vehicle through the EPA test. This is what tripped-up Hyundai and Kia in their fuel economy ratings for a certain number of vehicles last year. With the EPA's small staff, it typically only audits a small number of automaker's mpg results for new vehicles. Plus, the coast-down test was never really a focus of their investigations. That changed in 2010 as EPA wanted to deter automakers from inflating their fuel economy ratings. Grudnler declined to reveal specifics of the EPA’s report, but did say "will be very interesting to some people."
