Don't worry if you have forgotten that the Acura ILX still exists, as your author also forgot about it until this week when the Japanese automaker announced a refreshed version. The 2019 ILX gets Acura's new front end design with a large pentagonal grille, aggressive bumper cutouts, and LED ‘Jewel Eye’ headlights. Around back is a restyled decklid, taillights, and a new rear diffuser. For the interior, Acura has installed an updated version of their two-screen infotainment layout that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A-Spec models come equipped with a set of sport seats. One big change is all ILX models getting the AcuraWatch suite of active safety features as standard. This includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and and road departure mitigation. One item that hasn't changed is the powertrain. A 2.4L four-cylinder producing 201 horsepower is teamed with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Acura hasn't revealed pricing, but we wouldn't be surprised if it remains at the same $28,100 as the current model. Sales will begin in October. American Honda Sets New February Record; New Civic and Honda Division Lead with Second Consecutive Monthly Records · Honda Division sets new February benchmark on sales of 106,212 vehicles · All-new 2016 Honda Civic sets a new monthly record for the second month in a row with sales up 31.7 percent; with all-new Civic Coupe set to go on sale mid-March · Acura ILX, the brand’s entry point and most youthful model, was up 56.4 percent TORRANCE, Calif., March 1, 2016 – American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported record February sales of 118,985 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 12.8 percent. Honda Division set a new February record with 106,212 units sold, up 14.9 percent; Honda car sales reached 57,267 while record February truck sales totaled 48,945 for the month. Acura sales totaled 12,773 with sedan sales of 4,683 and trucks reaching 8,090 units in February. Honda Fresh off of a record January and led by record sales of the all-new 2016 Civic Sedan and the CR-V along with a strong performance by the Accord, the Honda brand set a new February sales mark. · Civic, relying only on sales of the Sedan, was the brand’s best-selling model for the month, setting a new February record, with sales up 31.7 percent to 27,707 units; the All-new Civic Coupe will accelerate that momentum when it goes on sale in mid-March. · Also bucking the light truck trend, Accord was up 19.3 percent on sales of 25,785 units. · CR-V, America’s best-selling SUV, was up 13.2 percent on record February sales of 25,250 vehicles. · Odyssey had a double digit gain, up 11.4 percent with 8,994 units sold for the month. · In high demand but short supply, Pilot sold 9,572 units, a strong month, but a 24.2 percent decrease compared to February 2015, when high inventories and aggressive sell-down efforts of the prior generation model led to near-record sales. Acura sent out a teaser shot of the refreshed and soon to be revealed 2016 Acura ILX sedan. Calling the refresh "substantially new", Acura is straddling the gap between "refreshed" and "all-new" with the ILX. While the ILX will remain on the same platform, the powertrain is new, the exterior has been more aggressively styled, and the interior has been upgraded. The ILX has never been the sales star Acura hoped for. In spite of tweaking the package multiple times since introduction, sales of the ILX are down over 16% year to date after moving only 20,430 units in 2013, its first full year on the market. Since going on the market, the ILX has gained competition from Audi A3, Mercedes CLA, and Chrysler 200, while also facing competition from the likes of the Buick Verano and Volvo S60 already on sale. Acura sent out a teaser shot of the refreshed and soon to be revealed 2016 Acura ILX sedan. Calling the refresh "substantially new", Acura is straddling the gap between "refreshed" and "all-new" with the ILX. While the ILX will remain on the same platform, the powertrain is new, the exterior has been more aggressively styled, and the interior has been upgraded. The ILX has never been the sales star Acura hoped for. In spite of tweaking the package multiple times since introduction, sales of the ILX are down over 16% year to date after moving only 20,430 units in 2013, its first full year on the market. Since going on the market, the ILX has gained competition from Audi A3, Mercedes CLA, and Chrysler 200, while also facing competition from the likes of the Buick Verano and Volvo S60 already on sale. Since going on sale last May, total sales of the ILX stand at 19,759 vehicles. In that same time, Buick has moved 47,859 Veranos. Acura has announced some changes for the 2014 ILX that will help improve sales. All ILX models will now come equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated leather seats, an eight-way power driver's seat, rearview camera, a enhanced sound system with a new subwoofer, and a noise cancellation system. Those who were hoping for some mechanical changes will be disappointed as it appears the ILX lineup will stay pretty much the same. Acura isn't saying if any changes will appear on the ILX Hybrid, only stating in a press release that details of that model will appear at a later time. Acura only sold 12,251 ILXs in 2012, which is way off the 30,000 goal they had set for the year. Acura admits this freely. “(The ILX is) not hitting our sales expectations. Consumers have told us they like the 2.4L and they wish they had an automatic, but they say the midrange vehicle is underpowered and they don’t see the value in it.” American Honda President John Mendel said to reporters at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show. The ILX comes in three different variations: a base 2.0L with an automatic transmission, a 2.4L with a six-speed manual, and a 1.5L hybrid model with a continuously variable transmission. This isn't the first mistake Acura has made with the ILX. Reviewers have complained that 2.4L doesn't offer the technology package that brings such features as navigation while the 2.0L and Hybrid offer it. “We’re doing some value enhancements on the car. We’re planning some as we go forward. But I think, overall, we have a good plan for ILX. It is bringing in buyers to Acura we had wanted, as in first-time luxury (buyers) or move-ups," Mendel said.
