Engines, transmission and BMW xDrive. Cutting-edge powertrain technology for a luxurious driving experience. The new BMW 7 Series takes the driving pleasure experience in a luxury sedan as seriously as it does the comfort of the passengers. The new BMW 7 Series is available with six, eight and twelve cylinder engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid drive system with a brand new design offering increased electric range, enhanced performance and lower consumption. The standard eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission has undergone improvement, as has the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. All the engines fitted in the new BMW 7 Series share a number of common features: aluminum construction, optimized thermodynamics and the very latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package for the engines features twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. Prestige plus performance: V12 engine in the BMW M760i xDrive. Spearheading the line-up of engines for the new BMW 7 Series is the twelve-cylinder motor that sets the benchmark for power delivery in the luxury segment. Traditionally the most prestigious engine variant, the V12 serves up a blend of unrivalled smoothness and tremendous performance. The engine powering the new BMW M760i xDrive has a displacement of 6.6 liters from which it extracts 600 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm. The peak torque of 627 lb-ft is on tap over a wide rev range from 1,550 to 5,000 rpm. The high-performance engine propels the remarkably sporty luxury sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed of the new BMW M760i xDrive is electronically limited to 155 mph. Extreme rigidity, weight optimization and effective reduction of vibrations are the defining qualities of the V12’s basic design. The all-aluminum engine’s two banks of cylinders are positioned at an angle of 60 degrees. On the outside of each bank is a single, mono-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling and a separate cooling circuit. In order to reduce back pressure, the exhaust gases flow unimpeded through the twin-pipe exhaust system’s rear silencer whenever the exhaust flap is open. The rear silencer combines with exhaust flap control to give the engine a broad acoustic spectrum, ranging from creamy smooth to dramatically sporty. The buttons of the Driving Experience Control switch can now be used to select an additional SPORT+ mode in the new BMW M760i xDrive that activates a track-geared vehicle set-up including linear throttle response, direct, sporty, undamped engine response and a particularly vocal soundtrack. New V8 engine built for effortless sportiness. One of the biggest changes in the engine range for the new BMW 7 Series is the eight-cylinder unit fitted in the BMW 750i xDrive Sedan. After undergoing an extensive overhaul covering everything from the crankcase through to the engine management, the 4.4-litre V8 generates a maximum output of 523 hp – 80 hp more than the engine it replaces – between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. The 553 lb-ft of peak torque represents an increase of 74 lb-ft and is available from 1,800 – 4,600 rpm. The engine’s standout features include the pair of twin-scroll turbochargers nestled in the 90-degree angle between the two banks of cylinders. The V8 unit lays on some expressive acoustic accompaniment for its instantaneous and ceaseless power build-up. The new BMW 750i xDrive sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds Straight-six gasoline engine with a thirst for revs. The power unit fitted in the new BMW 740i and 740i xDrive boasts the free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder inline engines from BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter unit employs a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft is waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm. The new BMW 740i completes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.3 seconds while the BMW 740i Xdrive’s extra traction allows it to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Plug-in hybrid drive system: now with six-cylinder in-line engine. The plug-in hybrid variant in the new BMW 7 Series range takes all of the luxury sedan’s sporty prowess, passenger comfort and soothing ambience and combines them with exceptionally high efficiency and the ability to offer a virtually silent, all-electric driving experience with zero emissions. The integration of a six-cylinder in-line engine into the plug-in hybrid system, a more advanced high-voltage battery, more power and torque, plus improved figures for electric range, chart the progress that has been made compared with the outgoing model. The plug-in hybrid model that will be available at the launch of the new BMW 7 Series in spring 2019 capture all of the luxury sedan’s essence even more effectively than before. Its newly developed drive technology consists of a specially adapted six-cylinder in-line engine from the current BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units – whose maximum output of 280 hp is delivered with characteristic smoothness and free-revving eagerness – an electric motor with a rated output of 113 hp and a rated torque of 195 lb-ft, and a new lithium-ion battery with the latest battery cell technology and increased capacity. Enhancements have also been made to the power electronics, whose intelligent energy management ensures precisely orchestrated interaction between the two drive units and, if the proactive driving function is activated, efficiently coordinates the electric driving phases to coincide with sections of the journey that should be covered without any emissions. At the same time, the added performance from the electrical boost, which translates into even more response, is greater than before, as is the gain in efficiency produced by the assistance from the electric motor. With the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT mode, the drive duo can unleash a combined output of 389 hp, while the maximum combined torque for the plug-in hybrid variants in the new BMW 7 Series is up to 442 lb-ft. The new plug-in hybrid drive technology enables the BMW 745e xDrive to record a 0-60 acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. The energy required for this is stored in a latest-generation lithium-ion battery located underneath the rear seats with an increased gross capacity of 12.0 kWh (10.4 kWh net). The all-electric driving range will be available closer to on-sale date. New eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission: sportier gear shifts plus more comfort and efficiency. A latest-generation eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission assumes the task of relaying the engine’s power to either the rear wheels (740i) or to the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system found in all of the other new 7 Series models. When mated to the six and eight-cylinder engines, the transmission’s new control electronics and wider ratio spread help to further increase the drive system’s overall efficiency. Improvements have been made across the board in terms of driving, shifting and acoustic comfort, thanks to new torsion dampers that limit rotational forces in the powertrain while improved hydraulic control enables sportier gear shifts. The BMW 745e xDrive is equipped with a hybrid-specific variant of the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission incorporating both the electric motor and an improved separating clutch that acts as the link to the engine. It’s extremely compact design means it is only around 0.6 inches longer than the transmissions in the non-hybrid models. The Launch Control function of the standard Sport Steptronic transmission aids by optimizing traction during acceleration when this feature is used. Intelligent networking enables the eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s controller to work with the navigation information when selecting the best shift strategy. As a result, unnecessary gear shifts are reduced when driving through a succession of bends and optimum use can be made of the engine braking effect when approaching a junction. The drive system’s networking with both the navigation system and the cameras and radar sensors likewise serves to maximize the efficiency-enhancing effect of the Auto Start Stop and coasting functions. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown when stopping only briefly is prevented, while the coasting function – which is now also available with the Driving Experience Control switch set to COMFORT mode on all models apart from the BMW M760i xDrive – is only activated if the route topography and traffic situation mean it won’t compromise either comfort or performance. Fully variable, precise and efficient: BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The luxury sedan’s traction, agility and handling stability receives a boost with the addition of BMW xDrive. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is networked with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to swiftly and precisely distribute the drive torque between the front and rear wheels in a fully variable ratio as the situation demands. This means the engine’s power can always be directed to the wheels with maximum traction for loss-free transfer to the road, even in extremely dynamic driving situations or in adverse road and weather conditions. To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is sent to the rear wheels in situations in which all-wheel drive is not needed. All-wheel drive comes standard all new BMW 7 series models except for the rear-wheel drive 740i. Chassis technology and driving experience. Unbeatable comfort and signature BMW dynamics on demand. An exceptional balance between supreme driving comfort and the exhilarating flair for which BMW is renowned are the defining features of the driving experience on board the new BMW 7 Series. The construction of the chassis, the suspension and damping systems, the steering and the braking system are designed to facilitate both relaxed cruising undisturbed by inconsistencies in the road surface and a sporty, active driving style. The driver can use the Driving Experience Control buttons to select a set-up option to suit the situation – and configure that set-up individually in part. The set-up options cover the car’s drive functions and the manner in which its chassis systems go about their work. This allows the potential of the chassis technology to be fully experienced. In ADAPTIVE mode, the overall set-up adapts automatically to the driving style and situation, responding to movements of the accelerator pedal and steering wheel, the position of the gear selector lever and data from the navigation system to instantly select the right set-up as the car moves from city driving to higher-speed roads, for example, or approaches a corner. The design principle behind the double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle of the new 7 Series underpins its near-perfect balance between dynamic performance and comfort. The separation of wheel location and damping ensures the steering remains unaffected by disruptive forces from road surface imperfections. And high cornering speeds can be achieved without impacting negatively on ride comfort. The rear suspension uses its dual elastic bearings and tuned elastokinematics to ensure precise wheel location and excellent directional stability. The large rear axle sub-frame mounting provides an effective separation of the powertrain and suspension from the passenger cell, which benefits acoustic comfort. All variants of the new BMW 7 Series feature standard adaptive suspension including electronically controlled dampers and two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling. Plus, the Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate a range of damper settings to shift the emphasis of the driving experience further towards either comfort or sportiness. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. Plus, the height of the body can be adjusted manually. For example, it can be raised by 0.8 inches at the touch of a button on bumpy road surfaces or steeply-angled driveways. The spring/damper tuning in the new BMW 7 Series provides the basis for extremely dynamic handling properties combined with excellent ride comfort. Even greater control of body roll through keenly taken corners sharpens the sporting character of the luxury sedan. The set-up of the Electric Power Steering system has also been refined to improve both agility and handling precision. Integral Active Steering increases comfort, agility and poise. The optional Integral Active Steering demonstrates its strengths in a myriad of different driving situations. The system brings together the electromechanical steering of the front wheels – complete with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance and variable steering ratio – with rear axle steering. The variable steering ratio allows BMW 7 Series drivers to execute low-speed maneuvers with only small steering inputs and without having to change their grip on the steering wheel. At higher speeds, the car’s responses to movements of the steering wheel are less pronounced, improving both directional stability when driving in a straight line and precision on the way into corners. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, increasing the car’s maneuverability and significantly reducing its turning circle. By contrast, at higher speeds, the rear wheels follow the same direction as the front wheels, allowing the car to follow the course set by the driver even more quickly and accurately. Both in corners and when overtaking or changing lanes, Integral Active Steering imbues the luxury sedan with impressive poise and comfort. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview and active roll stabilization. The optional Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview chassis system further hones the ride comfort and dynamic ability of the new BMW 7 Series. Available for all model variants aside from the BMW 745e xDrive, this active chassis control technology reduces rolling movements at the front and rear axle. The Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview system teams up with the standard two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers to provide exceptional suspension and damping comfort and keep vibrations to a minimum. Active roll stabilization uses electric swivel motors to ensure fast and precise compensation of the lateral forces generated in dynamically taken corners. This enhances the car’s agility and directional stability when entering or exiting corners. The system noticeably increases comfort when driving straight ahead by counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on any one side. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview also includes an anticipatory chassis control function. The advance information for controlling the combination of chassis systems is learned from driving style analysis readings, data from the navigation system and a stereo camera, and significantly increases ride comfort and active safety. Driver assistance systems. Heading down the road to automated assisted driving in comfort and safety. The new BMW 7 Series underlines its status as one of the luxury segment’s most innovative and models with a comprehensive range of standard and optional driver assistance systems. Numerous new functions have now been added to the systems, through the introduction of BMW’s latest generation of advanced driver assists systems, which come to the driver’s aid in all sorts of different situations and specifically enhance various aspects of comfort and safety in the process. They ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions, such as traffic jams and heavy flowing traffic, and make it easier to stay in complete control in awkward traffic situations. Camera images and the data gathered by radar and ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surrounding area and either alert the driver to hazards or minimize the risk of an accident by means of corrective braking and steering. The assistance systems fitted in the new BMW 7 Series with their impressive wealth of features demonstrate how much progress has been made along the road to automated driving. The Active Driving Assistant package is standard equipment for the new BMW 7 Series. Based on camera and radar technology, it includes the Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. The Active Driving Assistant additionally includes the Lane Departure Warning Blind Spot Detection systems, which are operational from 44 – 130 mph and from 12 mph up to top speed respectively and help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering. The Active Driving Assistant also features the Speed Limit Info system, Rear Collision Preparation and Cross Traffic Alert, which mitigate rear end collisions. Driving Assistance Professional: complete assistance for comfortable and safe driving. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds the Driving Assistance Professional suite of features. It offers extensive assistance to make driving as safe and as comfortable as possible. This comprehensive package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Steering & Traffic Jam Assistant, Automatic Lane Change and Evasion Assistant & Cross Traffic alert. Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways greatly eases the driver’s burden during what may be the most tedious part of driving, stop and go highway traffic. Operating at speeds up to 37 mph on divided highways, this assist system uses the interior driver-facing camera to allow the driver extended hands off driving as long as they are attentive to the road ahead. It also handles acceleration and braking and is capable of adapting the road speed to the planned route with the help of navigation data. As a result, the vehicle is automatically decelerated to an appropriate speed in preparation for bends, junctions or roundabouts ahead. The camera-based traffic sign recognition system also makes use of the navigation data to glean information on upcoming speed restrictions so that they can be taken into consideration in advance. Evasion Assistant & Cross-traffic alert can help avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to such a scenario is detected, the system supports the driver when they steer the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane. Improved driver focus and visibility in the dark: BMW Head-Up Display and BMW Night Vision. By projecting information graphics onto the windscreen, the optional BMW Head-Up Display provides a particularly effective means of focusing on the task of driving. The system mirrors the information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be assimilated without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from other assistance systems, detailed turn instructions, plus telephone and entertainment lists. The optional BMW Night Vision system includes pedestrian and animal detection as well as a marker light. It relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing persons, larger animals and other heat-emitting objects. Any objects detected are additionally illuminated using the headlights’ marker light function. A helping hand with parking and maneuvering: standard Parking Assistant Plus and rear view camera. Drivers of the new BMW 7 Series also receive effective assistance when parking and maneuvering. The standard Active Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at both the front and rear has a range of functions, including not just visual and acoustic warnings but also automatic application of the brakes to prevent collisions with obstacles in the area surrounding the vehicle. A rear view camera comes standard, as does the Automatic Parking Assistant for automatically selecting and maneuvering into spaces that can now be either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Suitable parking spots are identified with the help of ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. During the parking maneuver, the system takes care of controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition to this, the system can be used for automatically maneuvering out of parallel parking spaces too. Unique in segment: Back-Up Assistant. Another of the Parking Assistant Plus’s features is the ingenious Back-Up Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spots or maneuver when space is limited. This system is the only one of its kind in this segment and offers the highly convenient facility of automated reversing, especially in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-story car parks, entrances to courtyards or narrow driveways. This is done by storing the steering movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver when travelling at speeds up to 22 mph. The system is then able to steer the vehicle for distances of up to 50 yards along exactly the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Panorama View and 3D Top View features are used to depict a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings from different perspectives in the Control Display. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone. BMW Live Cockpit featuring BMW iDrive 7.0 Operating System, BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive. Digital, intelligent and totally connected. Standard specification for the new BMW 7 Series includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital helper which responds to the prompt “Hey BMW” and is an intrinsic element of the iDrive 7 operating system. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving ease with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, as it marks the start of a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car, access its functions and obtain information simply by speaking. BMWs acquire a digital personality. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. It helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with the settings they like to have for the seat heating, for example, or the places they navigate to frequently (“Take me home”). One unique feature compared with other digital assistants of this type is the option of naming it (such as “Charlie”) for even greater individuality and personality. Not only does the assistant await the driver’s every command, it’s always there to assist and even provide casual conversation. It is familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly. Ongoing improvement of the technology will enable it to learn more and more preferences and favorite settings in future. The assistant gets better and better with every command given, every question asked and every setting made. Always on board: the digital BMW expert. The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. It is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does Park Distance Control work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). It knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance wellbeing. For instance, “Hey BMW, I’m tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more alert. The perfect assistant. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal assistant and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, how far can I drive before I need to refuel?”). Navigation can now be made simpler than ever, as the assistant will suggest convenient parking, both on and off street, at the journey’s destination, provide information on any traffic jams along the route and even search for a café in the vicinity. It learns destinations the customer drives to frequently. Connected Navigation with new digital services. “Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services that are designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into an even more sophisticated experience. Drivers of the new BMW 7 Series can share destinations from some of their favorite apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The key destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronized with the car, so that the most important addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Automatic Parking, which proposes various parking options both on and off street before the destination is reached. This service provides information on the nearest parking lots and garages as well as proposing routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. To help create the new Automatic Parking Assistant, the existing On-Street Parking Information data and Parkmobile services have been intelligently incorporated into its scope of functions. Exactly the right information at just the right time: the BMW iDrive 7.0 Operating System. The newly designed screen grouping comprising the instrument cluster and Control Display, together with the inclusion of new functions, enables intuitive operation to be taken to the next level in the new BMW 7 Series, while helping drivers to concentrate even more effectively on the road ahead. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional comprises a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a Control Display measuring 10.25 inches across. This package of equipment also features an adaptive navigation system and a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of storage. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings the 7th generation of BMW iDrive to the new BMW 7 Series. The operating system’s most recent incarnation boasts all-digital displays and is geared more closely to the driver’s personal needs – with the aim of maximizing their attention levels. The system’s clear presentation and structuring is designed to provide drivers with the right information at the right time, aided further by the customizable and personalized content. The redesigned information display in the center of the instrument cluster now leaves enough room for an excerpt from the navigation map, for instance. In the main menu on the Control Display, the driver is able to create and individually configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four widgets (tiles) with live content such as navigation, vehicle information and entertainment. Both the content and the graphics are personalized to an even greater degree, as illustrated by the vehicle mock-up that matches the actual model and body color. BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance: permanent all-wheel drive also applies to all-electric driving. The BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance follows in the tyre tracks of the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance Sports Activity Vehicle as the brand’s second model to distribute its power permanently to all four wheels in pure-electric driving, when the combustion engine cuts in and when both drive systems are in use at the same time. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures supreme traction, optimised directional stability and enhanced agility through enthusiastically taken corners in all weather and road conditions. Perfectly executed power distribution between the front and rear wheels gives the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance extremely dynamic accelerative ability, with the journey from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) completed in 5.3 seconds. Yet the petrol consumption of the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance is just 2.5 – 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres (113 – 134.5 mpg imp) combined, while the associated CO2 emissions are 56 – 49 grams per kilometre (figures as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, may vary depending on the tyre format specified). The combined electric power consumption of the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance in the EU test cycle comes in at between 13.9 and 13.2 kWh per 100 kilometres (figures may vary depending on the tyre format specified). eDrive button allows powertrain control to be configured as desired. The driver can use the eDrive button on the centre console to change how the plug-in hybrid drive system operates. In the AUTO eDRIVE hybrid function, intelligent energy management ensures the combustion engine and electric motor work together with maximum efficiency and to dynamically optimised effect. The operating strategy defaults to all-electric mode at low and moderate speeds to utilise the advantages of locally emission-free mobility as widely as possible. The combustion engine only joins the fray at a speed of around 80 km/h (50 mph) or under heavy throttle applications. The driver can switch to the MAX eDRIVE pure-electric mode at the touch of a button. In this setting the car is powered exclusively by the electric motor, although the combustion engine can be brought into play at any time by pushing the accelerator into kickdown. In the MAX eDRIVE setting, the BMW iPerformance variants of the new BMW 7 Series have a pure-electric top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph). The Battery Control setting allows the charge of the high-voltage battery to be set manually. The driver can input a target value between 30 and 100 per cent of maximum charge, which is then available for pure-electric driving later in the journey. For example, electric power can be held back or even increased while on the motorway so it can be used subsequently for locally emission-free driving in town. Driving Experience Control switch with ADAPTIVE mode, clearly noticeable differentiation between SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO mode. The plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 7 Series are also equipped as standard with the newly designed Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console. At the touch of a button, the driver can activate a vehicle setting that optimises dynamics, comfort or efficiency. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission has outstanding internal efficiency, top-class shift dynamics and shift comfort, and a compact construction. Gearshift paddles on the steering wheel are available as an option, enabling the driver to make manual gear selections with exceptional swiftness and the greatest of ease. Working together intelligently, the combustion engine and electric drive system bring a system output of 240 kW/326 hp and a combined peak torque of 500 Newton metres (369 lb-ft) to the table. Immediate response to every movement of the accelerator and sustained delivery of dynamic power allow the BMW 740e iPerformance to dash from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and the BMW 740Le iPerformance to complete the same sprint in 5.5 seconds. The cars’ sporty driving characteristics are accompanied by extraordinarily low petrol consumption and emissions. The BMW 740e iPerformance and BMW 740Le iPerformance both record combined petrol consumption of 2.2 – 2.0 litres per 100 kilometres (128.4 – 141.2 mpg imp). The CO2 emissions associated with petrol consumption are 50 – 45 grams per kilometre (figures as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, may vary depending on the tyre format specified). The exceptional efficiency of the BMW eDrive technology developed using know-how from BMW i is revealed once again in all-electric, locally emission-free driving. The electric power consumption of the plug-in hybrid luxury sedans, as calculated in the EU test cycle, stands at 13.3 – 12.5 kWh per 100 kilometres for the BMW 740e iPerformance and 13.3 – 12.6 kWh per 100 kilometres for the BMW 740Le iPerformance (figures may vary depending on the tyre format specified). The range of characters encompassed by ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT modes are even more clearly defined than with conventionally powered vehicles. Beyond this, the Driving Experience Control switch offers the option of selecting ADAPTIVE mode. In this setting, the car’s responses adapt noticeably to the driver’s style and route profile. High-voltage lithium-ion battery: developed specifically for the models at hand, integrated with space-saving skill. A new BMW X5 is coming within the next year or so and it will be using the same underpinnings as the 7-Series. Autocar reports the next-generation X5 will use BMW's new CLAR - Cluster Architecture - modular platform. This platform is comprised of high-strength steel, aluminium, and carbon fiber. Not only does this cut weight, but increases structural rigidity. CLAR is predominantly built for rear-wheel drive applications, but it can take on an all-wheel drive system. This platform will go on to underpin a number of other BMW vehicles such as the next-generation 3 and 6-Series. Engine choices for the next X5 are reported to be a 3.0L straight-six, a new twin-turbocharged V8, and a 6.0L V12 for the high-end models. There is also the possibility of a hybrid model. One interesting item is that the new X5 will not share much with the recently announced X7 crossover. The X7 will the flagship of BMW's crossover lineup and take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and Range Rover. As BMW head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson told Autocar, the X7 will pick various engines across the lineup. Source: Autocar

If we're being a bit honest, we're kind of confused as to why BMW has revealed two performance-oriented 7-Series. Earlier in the week, BMW announced the Alpina B7 xDrive which produces 600 horsepower from a somewhat massaged turbocharged 4.4L V8. Then yesterday, BMW announced the 2017 M760i xDrive, the latest addition to BMW's M Performance lineup. Was there a scheduling mix up at BMW's press office that caused both of these models to be announced within a few days of each other? Nevertheless, let us fill you in on the details of the M760i xDrive. The 760 designates that a V12 lies under the hood. In the case of the M760i xDrive, it is a twin-turbo 6.6L V12 with 600 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque - should be noted these are preliminary numbers and could change when the vehicle is launched. An eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system gets all of the V12 power onto the road. BMW quotes a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 MPH for the M760i xDrive. However, the Alpina B7 xDrive beats M760i xDrive to 60 MPH by 0.3 seconds (3.6 seconds) and has a higher top speed (193 MPH). Outside, the M760i xDrive gets an aerodynamic package that includes larger front air vents on the bumper and a set of side sills. Twenty-inch wheels finished in grey come wrapped in a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. BMW says the M760i xDrive will arrive sometime early next year. Pricing will be announced sometime before that. Source: BMW Press Release is on Page 2 The All-New 2017 BMW M760i xDrive. Superb performance and exceptional luxury combined. The allure of the most powerful BMW V12 production engine. First BMW 7 Series M Performance Automobile. Woodcliff Lake, N.J.- February 11, 2016…Today, BMW announced the all-new BMW M760i xDrive, the latest addition to the BMW M Performance line-up. With the introduction of the 2017 BMW M760i xDrive, the sixth generation BMW 7 Series adds the first M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder to its offerings. The all-new BMW M760i xDrive combines luxurious driving, style, safety and innovative technologies while embodying M Performance dynamics with the integration of the first 12-cylinder gasoline engine with M Performance Twin Power Turbo technology. The BMW M760i xDrive will arrive early in 2017 and MRSP will be announced closer to launch. The allure of the most powerful BMW V12 production engine. The M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder gasoline engine in the new BMW M760i xDrive has a displacement of 6,592 cc, developing 600 hp (preliminary figure) at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 590 lb-ft from as low as 1,500 rpm. These performance figures enable the luxury sedan to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds (preliminary figure) and on to a governed top speed of 155 mph. During the development of the all-aluminum block, the engineers focused on maximizing rigidity while also minimizing weight. Using a closed-deck construction combined with bolts holding the cylinder head down on the bed plate of the crankcase, the engine ensures maximum stability on the cylinder liners. Double bolts on the main bearings with an additional connection to the side panels through threaded support bushes and bolts reduce the influence of lateral forces from the crankshaft on the crankcase. Iron-coated aluminum pistons, forged connecting rods assembled using the cracking process, and a forged crankshaft, ensure vibrations and noise are kept to an absolute minimum. In addition, the M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder gasoline engine boasts an array of special technical features allowing even better use of the potential provided by the engine’s design. M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology and High Precision Injection enable sharp and direct responses to even the slightest movement of the accelerator, a linear torque curve, exceptional efficiency and performance are all special traits of this new V12 engine. M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. Joining the V12 under an engine cover bearing “M Performance” lettering are two mono-scroll turbochargers in a compact arrangement on the outside of the two rows of cylinders, each supplying six cylinders with compressed air. The turbochargers stand out with their high level of compressor and turbine efficiency, and their positioning provides the ideal platform for short, straight and flow-efficient connections between the exhaust ports and the turbochargers. Two sophisticated air-to-water intercoolers cool the compressed air coming from each of the turbochargers in order to maximize the density of the intake charge. An additional water pump feeds the separate intercooler coolant circuit, whose air-to-water heat exchangers are now positioned directly on the intake manifold for the first time. M sport exhaust system delivers an emotionally rich V12 soundtrack. In order to reduce backpressure, the M sport exhaust system are routed as straight as possible and are as large possible in diameter given packaging constraints. The evolution of the rear silencers and flap activation system allows a broad acoustic spread, supplying everything from maximum refinement to a full-bodied 12-cylinder soundtrack. The system adapts to the situation at hand and the driver’s preferences with an emotionally rich 12-cylinder soundtrack that accentuates the dynamic character of the BMW M760i xDrive. The catalytic converters of the 12-cylinder engine are equipped with cutting-edge exhaust gas sensors that quickly reach their optimum operating temperature thanks to their positioning close to the engine. Injection system: Precision with 2900 psi of pressure. High Precision Injection optimizes the combustion process, contributing to the engine’s extraordinarily efficient utilization of the energy. Injectors positioned centrally in the cylinder head, constantly measure the fuel precisely and spray it into the combustion chambers in finely atomized form and at up to 2900 psi of pressure. The fuel is dispersed according to an ideal model calculated in complex processes, allowing extremely consistent and clean combustion. This also has a positive effect on emissions and engine acoustics. The mixture cooling brought about by the directly injected fuel also allows a higher compression ratio than that achieved by a turbocharged engine with manifold injection. The engine therefore works extremely efficiently, delivering greater performance and lower fuel consumption. The M Performance 12-cylinder engine also features Double-VANOS continuously variable camshaft timing. This technology allows the engine to breathe optimally across the entire engine speed range. The oil supply to the M Performance 12-cylinder engine has been similarly optimized. Its volume flow-controlled pump operates only when required and is therefore extremely efficient. The six-chamber pendulum-slide pump only supplies the amount of oil required by the engine in whatever state of operation it finds itself in. Instead of a manual dipstick, a display in the instrument cluster can be called up at any time during a journey to show the oil level status. 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission on the new BMW M760i significantly contributes to the dynamic ability of this M Performance model. The M Performance-specific tuning of the shift programs, delivering sportier gear changes and even quicker downshifts throughout the rev range, has been specially adapted to the characteristics of the V12 engine. The specific transmission tuning is also perceptible to the occupants through the functions of the Driving Dynamics Control switch. Carefully avoiding converter slip outside of gear changes results in a direct, sporty connection between the driveline and the engine. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission is equipped with a Launch Control function paving the way for drivers to achieve optimum acceleration on demand. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission can also be operated via the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel for an ultra-sporty driving style. In manual mode, the transmission follows the classical blueprint by holding the selected gear even when the engine hits the rev limiter. Harmony of performance and ride comfort. The all-new BMW M760i xDrive, just like the sixth generation BMW 7 Series, uses BMW’s intelligent lightweight design utilizing high-rigidity and lightweight carbon-fiber elements in the passenger cell’s Carbon Core structure. This technology results in a low center of gravity essential for agility and dynamic handling. Performance mixed-size tires optimize contact with the road. The all-new BMW M760i xDrive is fitted as standard with exclusive, newly designed double-spoke 760M 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in a Cerium Grey metallic matt finish and with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (front: 245/40 R20, rear: 275/35 R20). This wheel/tire combination provides a noticeable improvement in driving dynamics without compromising the car’s cruising comfort. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview. The new BMW M760i xDrive is equipped with the innovative Active Comfort Drive with Preview suspension system first introduced in the recently launched BMW 7 Series model range. Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview is an active suspension control system, which links up with two-axle air suspension and the Dynamic Damper Control system to deliver exceptional spring and damper comfort, not to mention extremely low vibration levels. It includes the updated version of the Dynamic Drive system, which reduces roll at the front and rear axles. The result is dynamic driving characteristics coupled with comfortable suspension tuning. Active roll stabilization is now carried out electromechanically and allows body roll forces to be cancelled out particularly swiftly and precisely when taking corners at speed. The adjustable anti-roll bars allow the suspension system the greatest possible freedom of movement, which raises comfort levels when driving in a straight line. The comfort-enhancing effect is further heightened by the standard air suspension, which has been retuned specially for the new BMW M760i xDrive and adapted to the car’s more dynamic character. Integral Active Steering. The new BMW M760i xDrive is fitted as standard with Integral Active Steering. The planetary gear set previously used at the front axle has given way to a variable steering rack ratio. By employing a more direct front axle steering ratio and turning the rear wheels in either the opposing or the same direction when steering – depending on the specific driving situation – this system reduces steering effort and increases both maneuverability in urban traffic and agility and directional stability during high-paced driving, while also ensuring an especially smooth and composed response when changing lane and cornering. The differing characteristics permitted by the steering electronics are linked directly to the Driving Dynamics Control switch and activated by selecting the relevant driving program. For their introduction in the BMW M760i xDrive, the characteristics of the steering system and all the other chassis control systems have been tuned specifically to the dynamic character of this 7 Series variant. Driving Dynamics Control switch with Adaptive mode. The Driving Dynamics Control switch in the new BMW M760i xDrive also allows the driver to activate Adaptive mode. This feature includes an anticipatory chassis control function and automatic selection of the driving mode best suited to the situation at hand. The advance information for regulating the combination of chassis systems is gleaned from the driving style analysis readings, data from the navigation system and a stereo camera. All the driving modes of the Driving Dynamics Control switch have been comprehensively retuned to suit the dynamic character of the new BMW M760i xDrive. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. This intelligent system is able to distribute torque fully variable between the front and rear axle, thereby ensuring an extremely high level of dynamic ability, agility and traction. The BMW xDrive system has been given a rear-wheel bias – and therefore even sportier tuning – in order to fortify the BMW M760i xDrive with the driving dynamics typically offered by BMW M Performance models. Innovative driver assistance systems. The Driving Assistant Plus system has been expanded for the new BMW 7 Series model range to include the Traffic Jam Assistant, Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection, Rear collision prevention and Crossing traffic warning functions – and features as part of the specification for the new BMW M760i xDrive... The new generation of the Surround View system also includes a 3D View and Panorama View option in the Control Display. M Aerodynamic Package. The all-new BMW M760i xDrive underlines the refined sporting character, exclusive elegance, advanced technology and unbeatable build quality it shares with all of its new 7 Series siblings. The M aerodynamic package fitted as standard imbues the car’s proportions and precise lines with even more of the presence for which the brand is renowned. The newly designed front fascia features two large air intakes to the left and right, which take on a still more voluminous appearance in the absence of fog lamps. Running along the upper edge of each intake is a Cerium Grey trim strip. The kidney grille bars and active air flap louvers are also fronted in Cerium Grey and have high-gloss Black sides. The grille elements are framed by a Cerium Grey surround. Along the sides of the car, the Cerium Grey trim elements on the lower edge of the doors, the Air Breathers and the door handle trim provide new surroundings for the prominent double upper side character line . Exclusive mirror caps and“V12” badges on the C-pillars in Cerium Grey provide fitting adornments for the car’s flanks. And exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with a new double-spoke design and surfaces painted in matt Cerium Grey advertise the car’s elevated dynamic aspirations as a BMW M Performance Automobile. The sporting design of the rear fascia with its black central area highlights the M sports exhaust system’s Cerium Grey twin tailpipe embellishers with exclusive V12 geometry. The M rear spoiler optimizes the flow of air, while the trunk handle strip, which links the L-shaped LED rear lights, the model badge on the right-hand side of the trunk lid and the xDrive lettering on the left, ensures the performance potential of the BMW M760i xDrive is evident at the rear of the car. An interior shaped by sporting elegance. Inside the car, carefully arranged M accents provide an elegantly sporting allure. Gleaming door sill plates in Fine Brushed Aluminum with an illuminated V12 logo indicate the presence of the range-topping engine underneath the trunk. The rim of the exclusive M leather steering wheel features an M logo on the center spoke and gearshift paddles on the reverse. The multifunction buttons on the steering wheel spokes and the spoke inlays are finished in Pearl Gloss Chrome. The model designation is positioned at the center of the dial, offering a clear hint as to the performance the BMW M760i xDrive is ready to unleash. The M pedals and M driver’s footrest in stainless steel with black rubber inserts provide an additional sporty-technical touch and accentuate the character of the BMW M760i xDrive as a driver’s car. A BMW Individual decorative inlay – in Piano Finish Black and bearing a V12 badge – positioned in the area around the selector lever and iDrive Controller lends even greater exclusivity to the interior. BMW ConnectedDrive. The all-new BMW M760i xDrive is offered with a wide range of all-new or optimized assistance systems including semi-automated driving systems. Also, unique is the number of functions that can be integrated in the car using Apps, either via the built-in SIM card or a smartphone and operated using the iDrive control system. Courtesy of the embedded BMW ConnectedDrive Services SIM card the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information function are part of the standard Navigation System. The SIM card also allows over-the-air automatic navigation map updates free of charge for the first three years after the vehicle is first registered. Intelligent connectivity in the new BMW 7 Series also supports interactive traffic sign updating which is new in the auto industry. Images of roadside traffic signs recorded by the Speed Limit Info camera, along with their position data, are relayed anonymously to a BMW server, which then makes any necessary changes to keep the map database up-to-date at all times. Drivers who activate this function are helping to keep the navigation database accurate, reliable and up-to-date not only for themselves but also for all BMW ConnectedDrive customers. BMW Head-Up Display: optimized graphics, larger projection area. The new-generation BMW Head-Up Display acts as a highly effective aid to driver concentration as it presents a broad range of information in graphical format on the windshield into the driver’s field of view. This standard system projects information about road speed, speed limits, Check Control messages, status and warning messages from other assistance systems, turn-by-turn directions and telephone and entertainment menus directly into the driver’s field of vision, where they can be read without looking away from the road. The new-generation Head-Up Display comes with a 75 percent larger projection area, while the displayed information and images offer further improved quality and detail with graphics in full color. BMW Assist eCall offers an unparalleled service. BMW Assist eCall is also part of standard specification for the BMW M760i xDrive and offers world-leading functionality. The system springs into action automatically, as well as when help is summoned manually. In the event of an accident, BMW Assist eCall sets up a connection to the BMW call center via the SIM card embedded in the vehicle; call center staff then make direct contact with the occupants. At the same time, the vehicle’s location and the potential risk of injury to its occupants are transmitted to ensure a quick rescue response, even if nobody in the vehicle is able to talk. iDrive 5.0 with touch display and Gesture Control. Today, BMW pulled the wraps off the sixth-generation 7-Series. The new version of BMW's flagship includes new tech and less weight. To our eyes, the 2016 7-Series looks like a larger 3-Series. The front boasts a larger kidney grille and narrow headlights, while towards the back has a short overhang and chrome tailpipes. The U.S. will only get the long-wheelbase version of the 7-Series. Under the skin lies one of the biggest changes to the 7-Series. Like the i3 and i8, the 7-Series uses a new internal structure called Carbon Core. The structure is comprised of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and ultra-high-tensile steel. Along with aluminum doors and trunk lid, BMW has been able to cut 190 pounds and maintain a near 50/50 weight balance. Inside is filled with loads of technology such as the next-generation of BMW's iDrive. The new version includes a touchscreen and a number of 3D sensors that respond to hand motions to provide gesture controls. There is a new heads-up display system and a available tablet-based control system for rear-seat passengers. The 7-Series also gets a number of chauffeur equipment such as reclining rear seat with foot rest via the optional Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package. The 7-Series will also have the option of BMW's display key. The company doesn't explain much about the key, but judging by the name, we expect it to show information about the vehicle. For the U.S., the 7-Series will have two engines at launch. The 740i comes with turbocharged 3.0L inline-six with 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The 750i xDrive gets a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Both models get an eight-speed automatic. Following those models will be the 740e xDrive. This is a plug-in hybrid model which pairs a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and electric motor. No output numbers are listed, but there BMW does say the model should travel up to 23 miles on electric power alone. The 7-Series will be hitting dealers in the summer with pricing starting at $81,400. BMW’s flagship vehicle reflects the company’s dedication to pioneer with the development of groundbreaking technology while upholding the 7 Series precedent of comfort and driving dynamics. First introduced to the U.S. market in 1978, the new BMW 7 Series will be in its sixth generation. Many features and technologies developed by BMW, introduced in previous generations of the 7 Series, set the precedent for the future. Pace-Setting Technologies such as Antilock Braking System (ABS) first appeared in the 1978 model which also was the world’s first production car to feature an electronic engine management computer (Digital Motor Electronics - DME). Illustrating segment leadership, an on-board computer (OBC) and Electronic Cruise Control set the standard for luxurious long-distance travel. The second generation, incorporated groundbreaking technologies such as Automatic Stability Control, adaptive transmission control, anti-tapping windows with express up and down on all four door windows and moonroof in addition to the world’s first use of integrated body electronics with advanced diagnostic capabilities and Xenon Headlights (750iL). Technologies such as Dynamic Stability Control, Head Protection System and on-board Navigation System with moving map, CAN Bus technology for body electronics (5 integrated control units) and the revolutionary side-impact Interlocking Door Anchoring System defined the third generation. For the first time in the US the V8 featured VALVETRONIC variable valve lift technology. In its fourth generation, BMW introduced Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) on a sedan, MOST Bus technology for body electrical with 70+ control units on common busses and infinitely variable intake manifold. For the first time, the world also benefitted from adaptive brake lights and electromechanical parking brake and electronic adaptive headlights. BMW continued with the introduction of pace-setting technologies in its fifth generation 7 Series which hit the U.S. market in 2009. Night Vision 2 with Pedestrian Detection, Integral Active Steering, Adaptive Headlights with Dynamic Headlamp Control system with sensors measuring speed, steering angle and yaw as well as “reverse flow” cylinder heads to facilitate better packaging and minimize turbo lag defined this generation. The BMW core principle of safe transportation was assured with features such as Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning system. Active Cruise Control with frontal Collision Warning System, Dynamic Damping Control and Driving Dynamic Control assured the 7 Series reputation of safe and efficient long-distance comfort. The new 7 Series Innovative Design The 7 Series is the BMW’s flagship when it comes to innovation in design and technology. The design of the new BMW 7 Series aligns elegance of the exterior and interior with luxurious workmanship creating harmonious proportions for a distinct look and feel. The cabin is framed by predominately horizontal surfaces and lines, presenting color and material compositions that create a relaxed ambiance. The all-new BMW 7 Series will be offered in the US exclusively as a long wheelbase version, more than one inch longer than its predecessor. At 206.6 inches in length, 85.4 inches in width and 58.2 inches in height, the new 7 Series is the roomiest Sedan the brand has ever built and features class leading rear seat legroom. A smoothly downward-sloping roofline, displaying familiar BMW proportions, headlined by a long hood, short overhangs, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment highlight a sporting elegance and powerful sense of dynamics. With the clear structure and upright stance of its front-end, the all-new BMW 7 Series has a powerful presence. It is the brand’s first car to feature an Active Kidney Grille including visible air flap control. The air flap is only open when there is an increased cooling air requirement, otherwise remaining closed. This improves aerodynamics as well as giving the front end an even more eye-catching appearance due to the visibly increased number of bars in the large BMW kidney grille. The headlight units extend up as far as the grille, while the light graphic of the familiar BMW twin circular headlights is leveled off at its upper and lower edges, giving the car a purposeful and focused look. The hood is honed perfectly to fit in with the form of the kidney grille’s upper section. The lower air intake stretched wide across the front end, the chrome bars in the outer edges of the intake and the horizontal contours of the LED fog lamps and the full LED lights underline the car’s broad stance. The prevalence of outward-curving surfaces when the new BMW 7 Series is viewed from the side give the car a powerful, eye-catching appearance. The door handles are incorporated into the character line, which now takes the form of a double swage line. For the first time, the wrap-around side window frame uses a single-piece element, elegantly incorporating the Hofmeister kink. The Air Breather surround in the front side fender spawns a chrome trim strip which runs along the lower edge of the doors. Its horizontal form accentuates the car’s finely balanced appearance and low center of gravity. The exterior mirrors appear to grow organically out of the window frame. A slender stalk provides the sole connection between mirrors and car body. Generating a modern and elegant effect, this design also enhances the aerodynamics of the new BMW 7 Series. The direction of the double swage line extends into the upper contour of the body and the light strips of the rear lights. This creates a harmonious connection between the side sections and the rear end. Tail lights feature LED technology and the two L-shaped light units are connected by a chrome bar extending the full width of the trunk lid. The rear apron features exhaust tailpipes framed by chrome surrounds adding luxurious detail to the body of the new BMW 7 Series. Two non-metallic and nine metallic color shades are available for the exterior paintwork of the new BMW 7 Series. Carbon Black Metallic and Singapore Gray Metallic can be ordered exclusively in conjunction with the M Sport package. Depending on the model variant, the all-new BMW 7 Series comes as standard with 18 inch or 19 inch wheels, while the options list and Original BMW Accessories range offer a selection of other light-alloy wheels in 18 inch to 21 inch sizes. The balance of dynamics and comfort are reflected in the design of the interior. Unbeatable driving pleasure and an unimpeachable sense of well-being in the rear seats have been created amid a modern and at the same time luxurious ambience. From the slim paddle shifters on the steering wheel and Driving Dynamics Control buttons to the instrument cluster and Control Display graphics, all the control and display elements share a new design that highlights their innovative functionality. Features include chrome buttons on the multifunctional steering wheel and center console, the start/stop button, the electric parking brake and the touch screen surface for the control panel of the standard 4-zone Automatic Climate Control. The controls on the center console are framed by fine wood or aluminum surfaces. Both the trim strips and the instrument panel’s chrome are made individually for each car; their dimensions are therefore matched to the nearest millimeter. The standard and optional equipment designed to create a sense of luxury is defined by precision craftsmanship. The generous levels of space are highlighted by a horizontal surface structure which extends through the door trim. Customers can choose from five color variants for the Dakota leather on 740i variants or five Exclusive Nappa leather upholsteries available on both models. Individual design Design and equipment packages available from the launch of the all-new BMW 7 Series underline the car’s extra sportiness and luxurious comfort. The exclusive appearance of the new BMW 7 Series is further enhanced by the Interior Design Package, an Alcantara headliner, deep-pile rear floor mats and fine wood inlays for the seat belt outlet covers, rear center armrest and roof grab handles in the rear. The M Sport package enables customers to experience the dynamic driving properties of the new BMW 7 Series in greater depth. This package includes an M Aerodynamic kit comprising model-specific front/rear aprons and side skirts, plus 19 inch or 20 inch M light-alloy wheels, illuminated door sill plates bearing the M logo and accents in either light or dark chrome. M-specific details also underline the sporting character of the new BMW 7 Series in the interior. These include the BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite and the M driver’s footrest. BMW EfficientDynamics The advances achieved with the latest generation of the BMW 7 Series succeed in resolving a number of traditionally conflicting paradigms: the car comes with an array of new innovations but weighs less, performance is more dynamic but fuel efficiency has been improved, and while it is more luxurious than ever, emissions are lower. Expanding knowledge, BMW i laid the foundation with groundbreaking BMW EfficientDynamics technology for the most diverse range of measures ever to have been implemented in a production BMW. The complete package for enhancing driving pleasure and efficiency in the new BMW 7 Series comprises intelligent lightweight design with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) as part of the BMW EfficientLightweight concept, a new TwinPower turbo inline 6-cylinder in the 740i engine from the BMW Group’s new generation of modular engines, in combination with innovative new solutions for honing energy management and aerodynamic properties. The use of BMW eDrive technology in the BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model constitutes yet another highlight. The new BMW 7 Series obtains an exemplary life-cycle thanks to resource-efficient material selection, new energy-efficient production processes and recycling. In order to achieve this, tangible sustainability targets spanning the vehicle’s entire life cycle were defined in the early strategic phase of development and actively implemented throughout the development process. BMW EfficientLightweight: reducing weight by up to 190 pounds with Carbon Core The BMW EfficientLightweight concept allows the new BMW 7 Series line-up a 190 pounds weight reduction in comparison to its predecessor. Groundbreaking Carbon Core passenger cell technology is the key element on the body structure. Thanks to its composite construction featuring CFRP, ultra-high-tensile steels and aluminum, the intelligent body design succeeds in increasing the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell while also bringing about a substantial reduction in vehicle weight. By using a hybrid construction of CFRP with ultra-high-tensile steels for structural elements, such as those found in the B-pillars, the design of the sheet-metal components can be adapted to save weight. The Carbon Core body is based on technology transferred from BMW i car development. The all-new BMW 7 Series is the first ever vehicle in which mass produced CFRP is used in combination with steel and aluminum. The BMW Group’s expertise in producing carbon fiber in the manufacturing of high-volume vehicles is unrivalled in the automotive sector. The new BMW flagship model pioneers the creation of new possible applications for this high-tech material. The lightweight design concept also entails the use of aluminum for specific sections of the body and chassis. For the first time doors and the trunk lid are made of aluminum. Taking suspension comfort and dynamic handling to new levels, the rigorous implementation of lightweight design measured at the suspension, brakes and wheels, reduced the unsprung masses by as much as 15 percent. Lightweight bonding technologies have been employed with near-source thermal and acoustic shielding for the engine, which enables the overall volume and weight of the insulating material to be reduced. The innovative insulation concept has the additional effect of further improving acoustic comfort. As a result, the vehicle’s center of gravity has been lowered. Following BMW tradition the weight distribution remains 50 : 50 between the two axles allowing for perfect balance of the chassis. BMW EfficientLightweight technology helps to consolidate its lead with dynamic handling and comfort. Redeveloped V8 engine and intelligent all-wheel drive The engine line-up available at the launch of the new BMW 7 Series range is spearheaded by the BMW 750i xDrive and its powerful V8 engine. This engine features a 4.4 liter displacement and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with the turbochargers located within the V-shaped space between the banks of cylinders. This redesigned V8 engine now comes equipped with TwinScroll turbochargers featuring flow-separated, bank-specific exhaust manifolds made from thin-wall castings. Engine efficiency was increased with a change in the compression ratio from 10.0:1 to 10.5:1 and the latest generation of VALVETRONIC and Double-VANOS technology. The optimized engine cooling concept with separate flows through the cylinder heads and cylinder liners includes a map-controlled coolant pump. Throughput can be restricted to 10 percent to warm up the engine faster reducing energy consumption. For the first time in a production car the intake manifold has been partially integrated into the cylinder head allowing air-flow resistance to be decreased, maximizing air-flow volume while reducing the exterior packaging dimensions. Overall, the efficiency factor of the 445 hp engine has been greatly improved. The new V8 engine is teamed up with the latest version of the intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the all-new BMW 750i xDrive. The fully variable, electronically controlled power split between front and rear wheels enhances traction and stability as well as the handling dynamics in corners. As part of the xDrive system’s ongoing development, the transfer case has been made more efficient, thanks in part to an optimized oil supply. The inline 6-cylinder engine in the BMW 740i The inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in the new BMW 740i comes from the BMW Group’s latest generation of engines. The 3.0-liter gasoline unit of the BMW 740i produces an output of 320 hp. The new engine’s crankcase, cylinder head and oil sump are all made from aluminum. The TwinScroll turbocharger features an indirect system of charge air cooling that is incorporated into the intake manifold and works in unison with High Precision Direct Injection, the very latest version of VALVETRONIC and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Not only has the efficiency of the new inline 6-cylinder engine been increased, its response is even more spontaneous. The BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model The 740e xDrive joins the BMW plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model lineup which will be available in 2016.The forward-looking character of the new BMW 7 Series is further underlined by the inclusion of the BMW 740e xDrive. In the case of the plug-in hybrid model, it’s not just the Carbon Core for the passenger cell that is rooted in the know-how gleaned from the development of BMW i cars, but also the BMW eDrive powertrain technology. The intelligently controlled interaction between a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric drive unit integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, endows the BMW 740e xDrive with dynamic acceleration on the one hand and noticeably higher fuel efficiency with lower emissions figures in everyday driving. The energy for the electric motor is drawn from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed underneath the rear seat where it is particularly well protected in the event of a crash. It can be recharged by connecting to any standard domestic power socket, a BMW i Wallbox or a public charging station. The eDrive button on the center console enables the driver to adjust the hybrid drive’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDrive basic setting, the engine’s power is boosted to notable effect by the electric drive when accelerating. With the MAX eDrive mode engaged, the BMW 740e xDrive is able to run purely on electric power, meaning zero local emissions at speeds of up to (75 mph) for a maximum range of 23 miles. The driver is also able to select the Battery Control mode, which raises or maintains the high-voltage battery’s state of charge so that electrical power can be deliberately conserved. Whenever route guidance is active in the navigation system, the predictive power management function calculates a trip-specific strategy for electric driving through to the entered destination. Eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission linked-up with navigation system The standard-equipment eight-speed Sport Automatic Steptronic transmission serves to boost efficiency with its wider ratio spread, reduced weight and optimized efficiency. A new transmission control system makes for more comfortable shifting and allows the transmission to be linked up with the standard Navigation system. The navigation-data-based shift strategy means that the gear selection can be adapted to the driving situation and the route profile even if route guidance has not been set. The shift characteristics are adjusted in accordance with the selected driving mode, so that the emphasis can be placed on both driving comfort and sportiness. The transmission also includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a Launch Control function that allows acceleration runs from standstill with maximum power and optimum traction. Features such as Brake Energy Regeneration and the Auto Start Stop function ensure highly efficient energy management. Activating the ECO PRO mode with the Driving Dynamics Control switch allows use of the coasting function which decouples the powertrain in coasting phases while travelling at speeds between (31 – 100 mph). This mode’s range of functions which are now individually programmable for the first time additionally include efficiency oriented operation of comfort functions, efficiency tips, as well as the Route-ahead Assistant, which gives recommendations for an efficient driving style based on the navigation data. The all new Air Breather and Active Kidney Grille The new Active Kidney Grille optimizes engine cooling and aerodynamics. Whenever additional cooling air is required, the Active Kidney Grille bars and flaps in the lower air intake automatically swing open. This feature tailors the amount of air for cooling the engine and brakes in a total of five stages as demands dictate. This system activates depending on several temperature thresholds as well as the speed of the vehicle. For instance during the warming-up phase and when operating at low loads, the BMW Active Kidney Grille is closed completely to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle. Another distinctive efficiency-enhancing feature are the Air Curtains and Air Breather in the front apron and side fenders. The Air Curtain accelerates the energy-rich air flow before the front apron and guides it past the side of the wheel arch while the Air Breather guides the air flow into the front wheel arch via a vertical air inlet through the side fender. Together they provide more efficient aerodynamics allowing air to be carefully directed out of the wheel arches reducing the turbulence around the wheels. The reduction in air drag of over 15 percent compared to the predecessor models has also been achieved thanks to the cladding covering almost the entire underbody as well as the new contouring of the exterior mirrors. Chassis technology and driving experience Highly sophisticated, precision-honed chassis technology combined with 50 : 50 weight distribution and chassis control systems give the new BMW 7 Series both sharper driving dynamics and ride comfort. The latest array of innovations offers drivers more freedom of choice for configuring the ideal vehicle set-up, which means they can now opt for even sportier handling or yet greater ride comfort. The selection is made using the standard Driving Dynamics Control switch. At a touch of a switch adaptive control of the vehicle set-up, mirroring current driving style and the changing route profile can be selected. Air suspension and Dynamic Damper Control as standard The all new BMW 7 Series features double-wishbone front suspension, five-link rear suspension and Electric Power Steering combine responsiveness and performance. The standard inclusion of a front and rear self-leveling air suspension endows the luxury sedan models with ride comfort. The suspension is supplied with air by an electrically powered compressor with pressure reservoir. Even when the engine is switched off, the height of the vehicle body is adjusted to keep it at a constant level and air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, compensating for an unevenly distributed load. The level control can be operated manually, allowing the vehicle’s ride height to be raised by 20 millimeters when driving along a rough stretch of road or approaching a particularly steep driveway. At speeds above approximately 22 mph, the level control automatically reverts to its standard setting. When SPORT mode is activated with the Driving Dynamics Control switch, on the other hand, the ride height automatically drops by 10 millimeters when travelling at high speed. The advantages of the air suspension in the front and rear are enhanced thanks to the standard Dynamic Damper Control system. The electronically controlled dampers improve ride and suspension comfort adding to the sedan’s dynamic handling qualities. A variety of modes can be engaged using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, which serve to foster all driving experience such as driving comfort (COMFORT, COMFORT+ modes) or sporty, agile handling (SPORT mode). Premiere for Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview The levels of comfort, dynamism and effortlessly superior performance can be elevated further with an equipment option that is making its debut in the all-new BMW 7 Series: Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview. This active chassis control system which is available for all models with the exception of the BMW 740e xDrive, works in unison with the front and rear air suspension and the Dynamic Damper Control to achieve a remarkable standard of suspension, damping and driving comfort. It comprises the newly refined version of the Dynamic Drive system for reducing rolling movement at the front and rear suspensions. For the first time, active roll stabilization is now carried out electromechanically, minimizing body-roll tendencies when needed, providing light-footed sporty handling while increasing driving safety and ride comfort. Driving straight, the adjustable anti-roll bars are set to allow the suspension system the greatest possible freedom of movement for increased comfort. The comfort-enhancing effect is heightened by the standard air suspension. The new system is also more energy efficient compared to the previous hydraulic control. Beyond all this, Active Comfort Drive also incorporates an anticipatory chassis control function with Road Preview. The advance information for regulating the combination of chassis systems utilizes the driving style analysis readings derived from the data from the navigation system to help respond to the road. Redesigned Integral Active Steering The Integral Active Steering system is available as optional equipment for the new BMW 7 Series. The planetary gear set previously used at the front has given way to a variable steering rack ratio which means that the Integral Active Steering can now also be offered in conjunction with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. By turning the rear wheels in either the opposing or the same direction when steering, depending on the specific driving situation, this system is capable of increasing both maneuverability in urban traffic and agility during high-paced driving, while also ensuring an especially smooth and composed response when changing lane and cornering. Driving Dynamics Control switch with ADAPTIVE mode for the first time For the first time, an ADAPTIVE mode can also be selected in the new BMW 7 Series via the standard Driving Dynamics Control switch. With this setting activated, the vehicle set-up is matched to the current driving style and changing route profile. The system logic reacts to movement of the accelerator and steering wheel factoring in whether the gear selector switch is in the D or S position. Depending on the driving situation, the powertrain and chassis systems are configured for either sporty or comfortable performance. Navigation map data is also taken into account in order to select the ideal vehicle set-up, for instance when switching from urban driving to the highway on winding roads or when approaching an intersection. The Driving Dynamics Control switch located on the center console now sports a new design. The COMFORT, SPORT, ECO PRO and ADAPTIVE modes can all be activated directly at the push of a button, while the COMFORT button also has the COMFORT+ mode stored. Production: Consolidated expertise ensures quality and sustainability Since 1977, BMW 7 Series luxury sedans have been rolling off the assembly lines at the BMW Group Plant in Dingolfing. The sixth generation is also being built at Plant Dingolfing which, as the center of competence for lightweight construction, plays an important role in the production of the all-new BMW 7 Series. For example, the aluminum bodies for Rolls-Royce models are produced in Dingolfing, as are drive and chassis components for other BMW production plants and supplies both the aluminum chassis and the high-voltage batteries – along with other electric drive components – for the BMW i models which are assembled at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Plant Dingolfing has accumulated experience of innovative production methods for weight-optimized vehicle components. As part of the BMW’s EfficientLightweight program the new BMWs lightweight Carbon Core-based body of the all-new BMW 7 Series benefits from the knowledge and process available. During production a unique hybrid construction method is being applied that combines carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with aluminum as well as ultra-high-strength steels for structural elements in the passenger cell. The latest generation of the luxury sedans also benefit from the direct application of highly advanced drive technology. The high-voltage battery for the BMW 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid model will likewise come from Dingolfing. Unique Carbon Core body structure For the first time, CFRP combined with steel and aluminum is being used in the body structure of the new BMW 7 Series with a completely new production processes applied in this unique mixed-material construction. The CFRP roof frame is being built for the first time as a core-free, closed structural element, bringing both the extreme strength of the material as well as its weight advantage fully to bear. The use of high-tech CFRP and the innovative production methods enhance the torsional stiffness of the passenger cell and lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity. The combination of ultra-high-tensile and hot-stamped steels in conjunction with CFRP for safety-related parts of the body benefits safety and driving dynamics. During the paint process, the drying method and temperature management are adapted to the specific requirements of the new material mix. CFRP production using water power, extensive use of recycled materials At the core of the all-new 7 Series production process is the principle of resource-saving processes and maximum possible sustainability across the vehicles life-cycle. Energy requirements for the manufacture of carbon fiber are 100 percent covered by renewable resources, with hydropower providing the electricity for the carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake, Washington. Innovative recycling processes are applied allowing CFRP components to derive from spare processed material. Around 50 percent of the aluminum used in cast components of the new BMW 7 Series comprises secondary material. Modern methods of secondary aluminum are available, with the recycled light alloy displaying the same attributes as the original material. On the thermoplastics front, some 20 percent of the material used is recycled. The inner lining of the trunk lid and parts of the door trim are made from the natural fiber kenaf. View full article

During the consultation sessions, clients are provided with image concepts as well as color, leather and trim samples they can touch and feel. Designworks represents the perfect platform for creating a customized BMW Individual vehicle as it provides access to professional designers that work hand-in-hand with clients throughout the commissioning processes.

While Mercedes-Benz and Audi have offered performance versions of the flagship sedans, BMW has been the outlier. The closest the German automaker has gotten is the B7 done by BMW specialist Alpina. But BMW M's engineering boss Albert Biermann has dreams of an M7. “I would love to compete in this area of the market. The money is just there to pick up. An M7 would be a much different proposition to the B7,” Biermann told Autocar. Now Biermann says such a model isn't in their plans at the moment. Currently, the division is looking into all-wheel drive for the M5 and M6, and possible M version of the 3-Series GT. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. BMW's march of the diesels will continue at the Chicago Auto Show next month as they will unveil the first 7-Series with a diesel for the U.S. market. Meet the 2014 740Ld xDrive. The 740Ld xDrive comes will utilize a 3.0L inline-six diesel engine producing 255 horsepower and a mighty fine 413 pound-feet of torque that peaks between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. Now BMW hasn't revealed fuel economy numbers for the 740Ld, but the company does say its diesel technology is good for a 25 to 30 percent increase in fuel economy. This could mean that the 740Ld could achieve mid to high 30's on the highway. Pricing for the 2014 740Ld xDrive will start at $83,425 (includes a $925 destination and handling charge). The 740Ld xDrive arrives at dealers sometime in the spring. Source: BMW William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 3, 2012 BMW could be cutting the V12 engine from the next-generation 7-Series. CarAdvice.com.au sat down with Christoph Priemelm, BMW Australia product and pricing manager. Preiemelm said that decision on whether a V12 is in the next 7-Series or not is up in the air. “There’s certainly some focuses where [the car’s planners] set targets in the sense of where emissions should go or what technology should be introduced, but whether it [the 7 Series V12] will be continued or not, the final call has not been made,” said Preiemelm. The V12 was introduced back in 1987 in the second-generation 7-Series. One of six 7-Series sold during the late eighties and early nineties were equipped with a V12. Since then, the V12 has become a niche model. Source: CarAdvice.com.au William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 13, 2012 This past week, a picture of a slideshow made its way onto the VWVortex forums. The picture shows what BMW might have planned for diesels in the U.S. in next couple of years. Starting next year, the 3-Series sedan will bring back a diesel option in the first quarter. The second quarter BMW will introduce the 3-Series wagon with a diesel. In the third quarter, the 5-Series diesel will come out and will be followed by the new X5 diesel at the end of the year. For 2014, the 7-Series and X3 join in on the diesel fun. What engines are in play with this plan? We know that a single-turbo 2.0L four-cylinder and a twin-turbo, 3.0L diesel inline-six are the two engines destined for the U.S. Car and Driver speculates the four-cylinder will go into the 3-Series, X3, and 5-Series, while the 7-Series and X5 go with the six. When reached for comment by Car and Driver, BMW neither confirmed or denied the plans on the slide. Source: VWVortex, Car and Driver Related Stories: BMW Bringing Back Diesels View full article

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 19, 2012 BMW has long maintained there would be no M version of the 7-Series sedan, despite competitors offering a performance version of their flagship sedans. However, BMW could be changing their tune. Automobile Magazine has learned the next generation 7-Series could be seeing a sort of, kind of M7 called the M770i xDrive. The M770i xDrive will likely use a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 producing 475 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque. While those numbers sound impressive, the M770i xDrive pales in comparison to the V12 760i which comes with 570 HP and a 665 lb-ft of torque. But the M770i xDrive will be more agile than a 760i thanks to significant weight loss. The M770i xDrive will use carbon fiber on the roof, trunk, and hood. Other weight losses will come from lightweight seats, carbon-ceramic brakes, thin-wall exhaust, and lightweight 20-inch wheels. The M770i xDrive could arrive sometime in 2015.
