  6. Answer: "It depends on the design details more than the behaviour of the engine". If the engines are equally efficient, then whether it produces more torque at lower rpms or less torque at higher rpms is irrelevant. If they both produce the same power then the fuel burned and emmisions prodiuced will be similar. Combustion efficiency is more important. In low load/low rpm conditions 2V engines can be (but aren't necessarily) more efficient. This is why (together with cost) Honda is still designing new 2V engines and why port deactivation is so popular. In high rpm/high load conditions 3-5V heads help (but are not sufficient) to burn more fuel cleanly to produce more power. Aside from the ease in incorporating multi-valve heads, cam placement and number is irrelevant. Any engine can be designed to be very fuel-efficient at lower rpms, by simply using less fuel and producing less torque. As engine speed increases, power will also increase, until torque falls off faster than the engine speed increases, but fuel-burn and emmisions will also increase with the in rpm. If low-rpm power is adequate for the application, then you can offer a combination of low rpm fuel-efficiency and high-rpm power, when the driver desires. A VVT system can change between a low rpm torque regime and a high-rpm torque regime, but fuel-efficiency isn't the only reason such systems are used. They can be optimised purely for maximum power, minimal fuel use, a balance of both, or alternate between the two extremes. Theoretically timing and lift can be altered independently of rpm, offering either efficiency or maximum torque at any given engine speed depending on the conditions.
  7. Key holes are a weak spot targeted by thieves. How any years has it been since you used a key to unlock the trunk of a new car anyway? I don't think "allowing dealers to unplug the battery" is a good enough reason for a keyed trunk lock.
  8. It's the wrong pic though. They're going back to a system like the Saturn V, but using the solid rocket booster(s) and/or modified fuel tank and engines from the shuttle. Both payload and capsule will ride atop their own seperate lift systems, with the capsule parachuting to the ground, rather than dropping in the ocean. As with the shuttle, the solid rocket boosters will be reusable to save money.

  11. If it's at the RenCen, then it must be the Lucerne. That photo of the V250 is very bad though. The new grille and C-pillar look much more like the tv photo - far more muscular and sporting than the V200 Epica. Inside and out if not for the powertrain you wouldn't know it was the same car.

  16. It is very cheap to build and sell, hence the very cheap to stamp panels (no deep draw, multi-strike panels here folks). Basic competition is the previous generation Astra sedan, as the Polish built Astra Classic and, the Russian Chevrolet Viva and other older C-segment sedans. GM do Brasil is working on their own ultra-cheap world car.

  18. They didn't. The press ignored Ford's advice that the concept was positioned between the Mondeo and Galaxy and is thus not a Galaxy replacement. The production SAV will be a smaller 5-seat MPV very much like the concept. Despite what you will read it will not be called the D-Max, nor the E-Max.

It will have transverse layout with an older 2.0 L diesel supplied by VW, even though DCX has a more modern and powerful unit built by Mercedes, and licences a similar design to both Hyundai and GM who will both have more advanced versions in their competing crossovers. Mitsubishi's version (the next Outlander) will also use a more advanced (Ford-Peugeot) diesel.

The Patriot is almost as big as the current Liberty (about the same size as the Ford Escape), but the next Liberty will be bigger — closer in size to the Xterra and Saturn Vue — as shown by its Dodge Nitro sibling. DCX will claim the Liberty goes from a compact to a midsize SUV, and although that's a stretch it will be close enough to the bottom of the D-segment to be reasonable.
  21. This is Kia's update of the Carens II - similar to the Chevrolet Journey it is half crossover (like the Jeep Compass) and half compact MPV (like the Mazda5 and Opel Zafira). Spy shots of the Sonata-based Carens III reveal a more MPV-like form, so this may preview an additional model to fill the crossover niche.
  22. It will not be "95%" like the Aura, but instead as with the Opel GTC Geneve > Opel Astra GTC. The concept is an exagerated version of the real car, although not so much as the G6 concept was. Except for the extra concept "bling" it will look basically the same, but key dimensions such as overall length, length and height will change, and consequently the proportions will be slightly different. The Antara will stay a three-door, which does not mean there won't be a five-door version, at least in Saturn form. If I understand the hints given previously a significantly different three-door version will be built in the US as a Chevy. For context the Antara is a little bigger than both the Rodeo Sport (three-door Frontera) and the last Blazer three-door.
  23. The Accord recieves revised engines with high-performance valve timing, so the results aren't directly comparable. The Pilot and other vehicles in the Honda/Acura lineup with carryover engines show reduced power under the stricter SAE rating, losing up to 12 hp.
  24. The D-Compact concept previews an indirect replacement for the RAV4, as the Toyota is replaced by a larger vehicle. In some markets where Daihatsu does not have a presence it may be sold by parent company Toyota, but probably not in the US, where the current RAV4 has never sold as well as true compact SUVs.
