  1. Back on topic: A video released today detailing McCain's ties to the Savings & Loan crisis of the late 80s. Watch and judge for yourself. http://www.keatingeconomics.com/
  2. Come on, the source is no better than any other extreme right- or left-wing tabloid out there.
  3. I agree with Paolino about the whole effect it's having on grammar. For people like us it's not a problem because we never grew up with texting or IM. I didn't get my first cell phone until I was out of high school. But take my 12 year old cousin for example; her parents got her a phone with texting a couple years ago, and she has horrible grammar and spelling. She has Myspace too, so she occasionally sends me messages and they're barely legible sometimes. From what I've seen, kids spends way too much time texting when they should be doing something active outside or actually having fun with other kids. I was at a baseball game a couple years ago and this 14ish year old girl spent the entire time texting and barely spoke to the other kids she was sitting right next to. It's like put down the phone for three seconds and just enjoy being outside on a nice day at a baseball game. I think younger kids are going to have a harder time being in social settings when they grow up because they'll grow so used to interacting with a screen rather than face-to-face.
  4. Yeah, I thought they maybe took the hood ornament and some of the trim off the 500's, but I did a quick google search and it looks like some did have hood ornaments and extra chrome trim. I always assumed the 427 was the only engine offered in the 500, but apparently they offered a smaller 240 straight six. The thing I don't understand is that the window sticker said this car had a 289, but that engine was never an option on the Galaxie, so someone must've done a swap.
  5. I send maybe 10 texts a month, and usually the only time I text is when I'm in a bar or somewhere loud where they wouldn't be able to hear me, or I have a question that's not really urgent and don't want to bug them with a call. I think the thing that gets on my nerves the most is when you're having a conversation with someone, then their phone beeps and they start texting away and just leave you hanging on your words. I've noticed it affects girls more than guys. And then there are the people that show up to a party or something and just spend the whole time standing against a wall texting people that aren't there. Why even bother coming?
  6. This is a great, great marketing opportunity. A 100 year old company and a 100 mpg electric vehicle that will pave way for another 100 years of leadership (or something to that effect). Like Camino said, we should be celebrating...this is the type of PR that will get GM out of the doldrums.
  7. Saw this beaut last weekend while car shopping...'66 Galaxie 500. They want $10500 for it, which is a little high IMO, but it's in pretty great shape. It only has a 289 though. '85 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren convertible...very limited production...they want $8500 '75 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible, great shape again '66 Dodge Coronet, another convertible '72 Dodge Charger '86 Buick Grand National '64 Mercury Montclair Some nice rear ends
  8. Sounds a lot like Kabul in the early 1990s when Al Qaida took control. The city used to be very westernized in the 60s and 70s, but then after the war the Soviets withdrew and the Islamic extremists under Al Qaida took control.
  9. Junge Lincoln-Mercury Volvo probably the tackiest car dealership in Cedar Rapids. Such a craptastic building, and the eagle is just too much. This isn't even fitting for a Kia dealership, let alone Lincoln.
  10. Man, they have some fancy dealerships out of the coasts. Although architecturally, that's a pretty cut-and-dry suburbia strip mall design. But it still beats some of our dealerships here that are stuck in a 1970s wood-panel time warp. Our Buick-Cadillac-GMC dealership here in CR is fairly new (10 years or so), but it's nothing to write home to mom about. It's pretty bland and uninspiring. Ford seems to be the only one of the Big Three that has updated most of its dealerships with the new modern look...even the small town dealerships. This is one area I think GM needs to get on the ball with, because walking in the doors is your first impression.
  11. Yeah, but McCain has based his entire campaign on "country first." The more we hear about the guy's past, the more of a sleazeball he looks.
  12. After reading that article, McCain sounds a lot like the type of people I really despise. The kind that take every shortcut possible through life and embellish their past in order to get ahead. They have nothing but hollow character and weak wills.
  13. Read the other nine pages below: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstor...n_mccain/page/1
  14. We're still at $3.29 for regular. Diesel is finally under the $4 mark at $3.89.
  15. Post-debate, the Democrats have solidified in more states. Even the solid Republican south is starting to weaken a little.
  16. I don't think they're out yet...the PC version doesn't come out until November 18th.
  17. Palin gave no specifics and provided only rhetorical answers. No, she didn't have any major blunders (although there were a couple points where she seemed to be wavering), but she only went on her talking points. "Takin' shots" "maverick" "walk the walk, talk the talk" "both sides of the aisles" "track record"...nothing we haven't heard in her interview before. Biden really got her with her comment about expanding the legislative power of the vice president. Overall, she was charismatic and fairly confident with her words, but Biden provided the specifics and facts that the American people are looking for right now.
  18. I'm looking at buying a new desktop very soon (planning on getting GTA IV when it comes out for PC) and have been looking at Gateway 9500's and 9100e's. The systems I have looked at are AMD quad cores with 3 gigs of memory, about 640 gigs hard drive space, but they have pretty weak video cards. They're refurbished and price about $400-600. I haven't yet looked at Dell or HP. What's some good bang for the buck for PC performance? I'd be willing to upgrade the video card and power supply if I go the refurbished route, but is there anything new that is worth looking at. I don't want to spend more than $800-900.
  19. For as few crossovers/SUVs as Nissan sells, they have far too many.
  20. Personally, I have not felt the pinch at all. The company I am at is growing, the market here in the Midwest is pretty stable (we rarely ever see huge bumps or dips), I have no assets, no house payment, no car payment, etc. The only debt I hold are my school loans, but they are at a fixed interest rate. I've been taking this opportunity to get started in the stock market; I've been steadily buying up Ford shares at each dip, and today I bought a couple dozen GM shares for the first time. I've held off on major purchases since starting full-time last May and have built up a little savings cushion. I know a lot of people are hurting from this economic slide, but it has been a benefit to those like me who are starting out fresh.
  21. It's a small school district (those 15 kids comprise the entire 2nd grade), but they have a high proportion of special needs kids for some reason. Mostly because the demographics of the area changed over the last 25 years as the farm families moved out and were replaced with drugged up, deadbeat parents. She used to love teaching, but she says every year the kids and the parents get worse. Each year there are fewer "good kids" than the last. A lot of the parents never show up to teacher conferences anymore. I think it's really worn her down the last few years, to the point where she's ready for retirement (which is still a little ways off).
  22. They do have special needs programs as far as I know. But apparently the rules changed under NCLB and now the kids have to spend a majority of the time in the classroom with the regular kids (hence No Child Left Behind). I remember when I was a kid the special needs kids had their own classrooms and only participated with the whole class in activities like music, art, and sometimes P.E. But when it came to textbook classes, they went to the special education rooms. Her class is only about 15 kids, but five of them are special needs kids and she spends so much time babysitting those five instead of teaching the whole class. Besides the poop kid, there is one that is so afraid of germs that she will freak out if anyone even brushes against her, two others that are severe ADHD, and the last one has behavioral issues because his dad is a meth head and his mom is basically psycho. My mom actually bought him school supplies because his deadbeat parents never got around to it.
  23. Wasn't GM sitting at a 27 mpg average including trucks right now? As long as they come out with new small cars that get better than what the Aveo and Cobalt are getting now (minus the XFE), I don't see it being so farfetched to achieve 35 mpg by 2020. Especially not to the point where GM would only supply two of its cars with a V8 and make V6 exclusive to Cadillac.
  24. My mom is a second grade teacher at a small school district and she says Bush's No Child Left Behind is a joke. They have these "productivity" days every two Fridays where the kids get the day off from school and they spend all day in meetings. All the bureaucracy they have to go through under NCLB has not improved anything. And, kids with special needs that should be in a special ed class are forced under NCLB to be in the classroom with regular children; for example, she has a kid that likes to poop in his pants and then take it out and show it to the other kids. They spend more time catering to the kids with special needs than they do teaching the rest of the class.
  25. I've never experienced an earthquake or hurricane so I wouldn't know what to say about them. Tornadoes aren't that bad either. Sometimes you get the rare F5's that devastate an entire town, but most of the time they're pretty harmless and rarely hit population centers. When they do get close, it can be a little nerve wracking. We had a funnel cloud pass over our house one summer and I even managed to get a picture of it. I've personally seen two tornadoes and they're a pretty awesome sight to see. Floods...I will never live in a flood plain, so I don't worry about them. Blizzards...they don't really do much damage, but it could be pretty dangerous if your car would ever break down in the middle of a rural area while one was going on. Frostbite can come on pretty fast when the winds are blowing. I don't know, I can't say I'm really afraid of any of them.
