  1. We decided not to stay in Wytheville for the night and instead head a few hours north to Roanoke where there would be some action and some bars to go to at night. So we drove 2 hours through some serious thunderstorms and heavy rain but made it there okay. Roanoke was a nice place with a cute downtown area and market place with some bars and restaurants. The guys went out bar hopping but Sean and I stayed at the hotel. I couldn't sleep that night, I kept waking up and checking outside to see if the car was still there. The Montana and Cutlass outside the hotel in Roanoke, two distant relatives who were both born in Doraville, Georgia. Some guy who worked at the hotel came up to me to ask me about the car, he thought it was a Monte Carlo at first then he told me he thought it was worth 30k. I told him for 30k it was for sale and he was first in line. The people you meet on road trips.
  2. It was time to get out of there and head to the nearest town with a population greater than 50 and find a DMV so I could get a transit. We headed for Wytheville, Virginia and found a DMV right across the street from a Chevy dealer. My Cutlass was sold new from a Chev / Olds dealer in Marion, Virginia which was about 45 minutes further south on I-81, not the way I was headed so unfortunatley I was not able to get there. I would of loved to have gone there and taken pics of the car in front of it and to see if anyone there was around in 77. This looked like a good place to eat in Wytheville.
  3. Showing us how the Native Indians in this part of Virginia lived.
  4. They had to get back to work at an Indian museum so they invited us there and we went. They sent us down this trail to a valley where there were things to see and I'm thinking to myself this is a setup, we're dumb asses and they really don't work here and when I get back up there the Cutlass will be gone and nobody here will of ever heard of them.
  5. After giving the car the once over and a quick test drive both parties were happy and they were writing up the bill of sale and then we offered them some Canadian beer. Then my brother and my son pulled out the guitars to play some John Denver tunes. Everyone was having a good time but I was still wondering if I was nuts and praying that I made it home.
  6. And there she was. She was everything I hoped she would be. (The car not the old lady)
  7. The man showed up first and said his wife would be here in a minute so we chatted for a few minutes. His wife pulls up in a Caddy and says she'll take the cheque and her husband will take me to the car. I wasn't too happy about that but I knew that they were a little worried about my rubber Canadian cheque not being good so what choice did I have? I knew once I commited to this car on Ebay there was no backing out of it, I didn't take a few days off work a drive a thousand miles to change my mind. So she took of with my cheque and we took off following him in his Silverado. Two minutes down the road we pulled into where the car was stored.
  8. This is what happens when you stuff everything into the back of a van and your not careful when you open the back, lost 3 beers but there were many more back there.
  9. We met the owners at this gas station and then they would take me to the car. This is the Montana we rented for the 15 hour drive down. Rocking chairs outside the gas station and country music playing on the outdoor speakers.
  10. This is the exit of I-77 in Virginia for the town of Bastian were the car was.
  11. Home Weet Home!! The Cutlass is officially in her new home. Left Saranac Lake, NY this morning around 7:30 and got to the border at 8:45. Parked at the U.S. export control building and went in and showed my paper work, they pulled the file and said the title was clear and I was good to go. They didn't even come out to check the car. Took my stamped title and reported to Canadian customs. Showed them my bill of sale etc and they went onto the Nada site to check how much the car was worth. It is ridiculous that you have to pay tax (GST) on something that was not even purchased in Canada. They had a few forms for me to fill and I was on my way, they didn't even come outside to check the car neither. So much for border security. Will post all the photos of the journey on the weekend.
  12. I have been given the green light by U.S. customs to bring the car there tomorrow the 26th, so I'm off to my friends house now in Lake Placid, NY where the car has been since Sunday night and I'll head for the border first thing in the morning. Wish me luck.
  13. Hi, That was cool when I saw you at the traffic light, at least you kind of got to see the car in person. I only arrived on Friday at 5:30 and your car had already been through the auction. I left a note with my # on your window when it was parked outside Friday night but maybe you didn't get it. The Cutlass made it all the way without any problems now I just have to get it through customs. Will post pics later in the week.
  14. I am hoping to be at Carlisle for Friday afternoon and if I am I will go to the auction around 4:30 and try to find you when your car comes up. The Cutlass will be parked close by and hopefully you can check it out.
  15. Thanks, for some reason I never thought of that, too much on my mind right now since I'm leaving tommorow at 6:00.
  16. We think alike! I love the look of the 76-77, they have always been my favorite car. I prefer the 76 too with the circular vents and what I think is a nicer steering wheel and the waterfall grill only has the one divider in the middle but besides that they're identical. It has the 350. My first post includes all the info that was listed by the seller on Ebay. Just hope it looks as good in person. You can never judge by pics alone.
  17. Yes I've read all through the site but I can only find Phone numbers that are 1-800 for information and they don't work from here ( Canada). Feel like making the call for me and asking what the procedure is for out of state residents who buy a car in Virginia? 1-866-368-5463 or 1-800-435-5137, I'd owe you one.
  18. Any Virginia residents here or people who can help me? I bought a car on Ebay that I'm picking up in Virginia this friday and I want to know how to do the transfer and get a transit to drive the car home to Canada. See my post in the Oldsmobile section under "bought a 77 Cutlass Supreme" if you want to see this beauty. Thanks
  19. Is an auto tag place the same thing as a DMV office? I can't get through to Virginia DMV cause they only have 1-800 numbers on thier web site and they don't work from Canada.
  20. Thanks for the comments and please keep them coming. I hope it looks as good in person as it does in the photos. The timing was perfect since my brother and some friends were going to Carlisle next week anyways so we're going to leave a day early and get this baby in Virginia and then turn around and head back north to Carlisle. These were still A bodies. My Father had a 76 Cutlass Supreme and that was the car that we had when I got into cars so I've always loved them. Does anyone know how it works in Virginia for the transfer? The original owners are older and don't really know ... they said once I get there and pay for the car they sign over the title and I'm on my way. I'm assuming I will then go to a DMV and get a transit that enables me to drive for a couple of days. The plan will be to leave Carlisle Sunday morning and head for upstate New York to a friends house where I will have to leave the car for a few days because I have to go to the border and give them the paper work so they can run a check on the car before its allowed to be exported out of the U.S. There is a lot of red tape involved but it should all be worth it in the end. I plan to document the whole trip and have lots of pics.
  21. I'll be there Saturday. Bought a 77 Cutlass this week on Ebay which I'm picking up on Thursday in Virginia and then driving it up to Carlisle on Friday. See my post and pics in the Oldsmobile section.
