  1. I agree they shouldn't of started advertising the 5 year change intervals. They just tried that to sell more cars and in the end they got burned again. there are plenty of morons that don't do any maintenance. Tell them to change something every year and they'll do it every 2 or 3. These are the people who will see 5yrs/150 and never change it. There's probably tons of 95,96,97's out there that have never had the dexcool changed.
  2. Still notice the coolant smell in the car when the heater is on but the coolant level hasn't dropped at all. maybe the heater core is leaking?
  3. Sounds good if it has the 3.6 but there better be another engine to replace the 3.4 in the regular models. No use having an SS model that will only represent 5% of sales with the excellent engine and your bread a butter versions having the Wal Mart engine.
  4. Their PP100 #'s are a lot higher than ours for similiar models.
  5. Nice find.
  6. That's what I noticed too. That shouldn't be there.
  7. We've had the car for 3 weeks now and like I mentioned before the intake gasket repair was done in February but the other morning it was cool and when I put the heater on I noticed it smelled like coolant inside the car. I know that is not a good sign but the Rad is full and there doesn't seem to be any leaks. Any ideas?
  8. It was the Solstice last year so it has to be the G6 vert.
  9. I don't think gaining 1 mpg is worth very much considering its too early to predict how reliable these AFM parts/ sensors will be in the long run.
  10. Cool car show. Looked like a nice local event. Love the Olds sign and the fact its still standing. The 76-77 Cutlass 2 door is one of my favorite cars for sentimental reasons. There are still some gems out there. I check ebay once a week for them.
  11. My parents and 5 brothers were all born in Ireland and then they moved to Canada and I was born but I'd still say I'm 100% Canadian with a lot of irish in me. Makes me think of a St-Patrick's day joke; Go up to a women and ask her if she has any Irish in her, if she says no ask her if she'd like some? :
  12. There is nothing extra in the engine or under the hood , I read they just get different injectors and stainless steel fuel lines and gas tank
  13. I like the Caliber a lot. Gotta hand it to Chrysler for coming up with another bold design and they have priced it very well here in Canada at 15,995 so it will get a lot of attention. Finaly some competition for the Matrix.
  14. He means hopefully the Equinox and Torrent get better engine options besides the 3.4.
  15. Yes the CSX is the new name for the EL and it is only a sedan. Apparently there are people who want to pay 3K more for a Civic with an Acura badge.
  16. True. I've been seeing them since mid March too but maybe April was their first full month that all dealers had a supply.
  17. There's a big one in Scanton, PA that you can see from I-81. I've never been there but it looks big from the highway.I love scrap yards and could spent a whole day wondering around looking at old cars. I love checking the mileage on them. There's a big one somewhere in Arizona and you can view all the cars they have on their internet site, I can't remember the name of it though, will try to find it.
  18. I remember having to memorize that for my high school mechanics class.
  19. I got the car and it is in very good condition. It has a bit of the paint peeling problem above the back wheel well and the lower front fender but I'm going to get that touched up by the body shop. Only 45K on it so it is a very solid car for a 97.
  20. Nice car. Don't put too many miles on it, it might be worth something one day.
  21. Just got back from buying a 97 Grand Am with the 3100 engine and guess what GM, the lady I bought it from had to have the intake manifold gasket changed a few months ago and her mechanic told her all these cars have engine trouble so she decided to sell it and buy a HONDA. She bought it new and liked the car a lot but after this scare and all the bad PR around the General these days she decided to jump ship.
  22. General Motors responds to class action lawsuits on intake manifold gaskets Oshawa, Ontario - General Motors of Canada has responded to a report that a Toronto law firm is suing GM in Canada and the U.S. over allegedly defective intake manifold gaskets. The action claims that gaskets in various Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac engines from 1995 to 2003 degrade prematurely and allow coolant to leak into the engine; the suit may cover 400,000 cars in Canada. In its statement, General Motors said that all vehicles are covered by a minimum warranty of three years or 60,000 km and some may have more standard coverage. "Beyond the warranty period, our dealers and retailers review out-of-warranty concerns on a case-by-case basis. If the customer is not satisfied with the dealer's decision, where is a process detailed in the owner assistance information booklet to help customers resolve concerns they may have. An intake manifold gasket concern can arise from a variety of causes. It is for this reason that any concern a customer may have beyond the warranty period is handled on a case-by-case basis," the statement reads. GM encourages customers to contact its Customer Communications Centre at 1-800-263-3777 (English) or 1-800-263-7854 (French) if they have questions regarding their vehicles. "The recent motion to certify a class action is unfortunate and we believe brought on by a spillover of an overly litigious U.S. legal system into Canada," says Stew Low, Director of Communications, GM of Canada. "Lawyers have grossly exaggerated the situation with our customers through unsubstantiated allegations in statements which have not been proven in court and will be vigorously defended."
  23. I agree. The limit is 160K or 5 years but Keeping Dexcool in there for that long is crazy. That was another one of GM's bright idea that came back to bite them in the ass. Remember when it first came out they were advertising low maintenance because the coolant wouldn't need changing for 5 years. A lot of people blame the Dexcool for the problems cause it did start happening in 96-97 when Dexcool was introduced but it did only happen on 3 engines so it was probably a combination of the Dexcool and a gasket that wasn't compatable with it.
  24. I agree with some of your comments but the fact is this is a WIDE spread problem that they have known about for 5 years and they have chosen to do nothing about it. If I were GM and I knew there were millions of cars an the road that could possibly have this problem and would be pulling out all the stops to get in touch with these owners to save these engines. I mean its the engine for christ sake not a sun visors that comes loose. I personnaly know 7-8 people who had this problem and whenever I talk to someone with a 3.1 or 3.4 if they haven't had the problem yet I tell them to pay extra attention to this area. And let's not blame the people who may not of had there cars serviced because GM has been putting the sticker under the hood that says,"This vehicle has Dexcool coolant which does not require changing for 5 years or 240,000 KM or 160,000 miles" since 1996. About 5 years ago GM took out full page ads in my local paper telling owners with 1996 model years vehicles to have the collant changed but the was the last time I ever saw anything about it.
  25. I am buying this car today and If I ever figure out how to upload pictures from my camera I will post some photos of the car.
