Photo-controlled intersections and the cameras

I didn't say I expected the government to go out of its way. I did say that I'd be interested to know just how many cases of this have actually occurred. -
Photo-controlled intersections and the cameras
ShadowDog replied to trinacriabob's topic in The Lounge
I think they're perfectly fine because they perform as intended in submitting fines to individuals for blatant disregard for safety in the effort to save themselves a minute on the road. The main problem is educating the stupid when it comes to red light cameras. As I'm sure all of you know, the problem first started when people thought the cameras would trigger at the moment the light turned red if you were in the middle of the intersection, so accidents would occur with a car slamming on its brakes the moment they saw yellow so they didn't get caught on a red in the intersection. I know that for Calgary, Alberta it has been broadcast on MANY media reports that the light must actually be red before the line is crossed in order to trigger the camera. They provided proof on camera to demonstrate; however, they still had people complaining about them. I have to wonder why when it's quite clear when adjacent traffic has the right of way. Why risk lives to save a minute? Understandably, if a camera is triggering while stationary, I would certainly hope not to receive a violation in the mail, only to have to go through the resource-wasting process of a possible court appearance to dispute the matter. I would hope the system works better than that. I suppose the only way to know for sure is to somehow find out if/when/how many times this has even occurred. Yesterday, the whole family was in the truck and following two cars and a tractor-trailer. The two cars ahead were tailgating the trucker so badly that when I noticed the light turning yellow before the trucker even approached the intersection, the two cars sailed through the red light because they didn't keep enough distance to see the lights ahead. I bring this up because it's amazing that I've heard about a half-dozen people complain that they shouldn't receive a traffic violation if they didn't know the light was red in situations like this. I was back far enough where I figure the second car should have been, if not for tailgating; and I didn't think it should be so difficult. -
The issue of using 5W30 instead of 10W30 won't make any difference unless it's getting cold outside any time soon. Simply explained, 5W30 flows better when the temperature drops. The only issue of any concern would be with excessive heat that would break down the viscosity modifiers in 5W30 to enable carbon deposits to form on the valves; however, by excessive heat, I refer to a lack of coolant, prolonged idling or high-sustained RPM. These things aren't such a big problem with oil these days. I know that up here in Canada, I ran 5W30 in the Monte Carlo simply because of the variable temperatures. In your case, it'll be fine through this driving cycle - unless you really want to put in a synthetic blend and need to change it out then. Yeah, the dealer really dropped the ball, but there's no damage to result.

You're right. A couple of years ago my wife and I were looking at a Z06 model on the showroom floor. They had open-view sky lighting in the building but one side was obscured by a thick pillar. In different lighting the color went from a gorgeous, high-sheen sun ray, to kind of puke color, to rusted metal brown. My wife said to the salesman, "It belongs in the sun anyway. Such a thing is too good to waste sitting in a garage or under a stupid blanket." I love my wife.

Still, that doesn't change the fact that it would be a bad idea for McDonalds to make a commercial with overweight people. I would think that, eventually, they're going to have to. I recall an article that took a basic look at obesity and fast food. Suggesting you can't have one without the other to such a large degree as seen in North America, it went on to say that it all comes down to the dollar and taste. While one can spend the same amount of money on healthier foods, most would use it for cheap fast food to satisfy their taste craving. Basically, if fast food weren't so cheap, there would probably be less obesity.

I've had something along those lines in a vegetable patty burger. The uninformed tend to think anything vegetarian must have copious amount of tofu; however, there's so many delicious alternatives to the generic meat product that make my mouth water thinking about them. I agree. Their burgers make me thirsty at first bite and their fries are terribly over-salted. If we ever buy fast food, we end up sometimes going to three places. I like Arby's for their marketplace sandwiches or Great Canadian burgers, sometimes A&W for a double-teen burger (incl. all veggies and bacon - a real porker meal), and depending upon which city we're in, Arby's for their curly-fries and A&W for their onion rings. I saw 'depending upon which city we're in' because one town out here over-season their onion rings to the point that it's better to think of them as ordering MSG with a side of rings.

I think that in less than twenty years, McDonalds will run out of skinny people for their commercials and switch to a marketing campaign that basically suggests, "Hey, everyone else is eating here, you might as well, too!" Seriously, has anyone ever seen an even slightly overweight person chowing down on a Big Mac in their commercials? You will definitely never see a fat kid with a happy meal. Ignore it and it will all go away.

How to Change a Toilet Paper Roll I replace the roll to hang from the top just out of habit. I didn't think that kind of thing really mattered that much. I find it interesting that this website suggests the majority rule. I mean, really, a household will be unlikely to perform a basic fire emergency instruction, but they'll be certain to know what direction $h!-tickets be dispensed. Gees, thank you very much women, these highly important matters would never be discovered if it weren't for you. I once dated a girl insisting it be dispensed from the top, despite the fact that her damned cat would unroll it all onto the floor. When I suggested she replace the roll to dispense from the bottom, she wrinkled her lips and squinted her eyes like it was a suggestion in poor taste. I replied, "Well then, you can either throw a wasted roll into the garbage, or you can throw your cat out the window... take your pick."

I Can't Drive 65!, Man pulled over for going too slow
ShadowDog replied to Justin Bimmer's topic in The Lounge
My grandfather knew he was a slow driver, but he never let a pile of cars build up behind him. He waited for a safe opportunity to pull to the shoulder and let vehicles pass. Around here, on rural roads with passing lanes that cover maybe only a third of the length of highway between cities, driving slow is a recipe for disaster. There are plenty of times I get stuck behind someone going far slower than the speed limit and it really causes tension to mount among the ignorant and impatient behind me. In the case of this fellow, there are more circumstances that must be known first; such as, how many vehicles was he holding up, if any? -
Old age, simply because it's said the best years of your life are the ones between retirement and death. The trick is to keep yourself healthy enough to enjoy them.

I've always appreciated Volvo's and that's one sweet car.

That just might do the world a favor since it's apparent it would be obvious she couldn't do both at the same time. I'm guessing you're the guy sitting among an audience of comedy shows with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face? If you hadn't guessed, which was obvious, my comment could hardly be taken seriously.

Alright, I have a plan: Judge awards restitution for medical fees, personal damages etc. on the condition the teenager does not own / operate a cell phone for one year.

Damnit! I mean, really, she'll win her case because the pylons are supposed to be in place 'before' work commences. Regardless of the fact that she's too stupid to do anything while walking at the same time. Yet, another excuse to hate stupid people.

Only Steven Segal is 'Above the Law'. Well, he and Chuck Norris.

What?! OFF my planet! I'd rather have a portable navigation unit for cycling or simple street walking. It would likely get more use in one of the company trucks for when I'm out finding my way to a client's place for a project assessment; however, I'd rather take it with me so I could go in any one of the vehicles, from the old 2000 Dodge to the new 1-Ton. Aside from that, they're handy, but hardly necessary for the average Joe to get around their own town. To me, a NAV system and LCD is only useful if it performs other functions. An in-dash DVD system with expandability for rear viewing is the only reason I would consider the option, since our 21 month-old absolutely loves his kidlet flix on trips. (Not to mention how it helps our sanity)

The point at the end being how he believes Hyundai needs this car to help inject some visual appeal into the brand to make it more exciting to be worth looking at. I'm not so sure that is such a hold-back for too many consumers; however, it'll help? There's little doubt this coupe is known to be a good car for what it actually is intended to go up against. I highly doubt the target market is the same as those looking at the domestic bunch o' rides. This will annoy me every time: Why is it that every journalist assumes every car's checklist must include navigation next to things as typical as a windshield? I just don't see the point of it being a 'must have' that all manufacturers should include.

Majority of House supports bill to reverse dealer closings
ShadowDog replied to CSpec's topic in Industry News
There's political motivation afoot here, pure and simple. The only people to benefit from this are those where votes count. -
Yah, like my mom says, "Show me."

It's a development game. One cannot look merely at initial offerings in NA to determine the success of a partnership that is meant to support a global system. For instance, a car developed and assembled in Korea is supported by design from Europe, engines from Holden, and sales in the important NA. This means a lot to the future of GM, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Interesting how so many of them attribute these problems to a first-year model and brush it off. Major part problems / failures, trunk latches and paint issues? Now, I know I'm comparing apples and oranges; however, with how much people have against a foreign car, my wife's first year Optra5 came overseas in a boat from Korea through GMDAT and it didn't have anything as significant wrong with it in the last five years of owning it.

What to you is the worst thing about being a GM fan?
ShadowDog replied to A Horse With No Name's topic in The Lounge
Listening to different sides say different things about how GM should be doing things... differently. -
Introductory numbers don't make for a good comparison. I mean, it would be interesting to see if Camaro could sell over the 20k mark this time next year like the Cobalt. But, and I laugh as I type this, anything can happen these days. Saturn = no comment (still laughing by the way)

What are GM's plans for Canada with Pontiac gone?
ShadowDog replied to 2QuickZ's's topic in Heritage Marques
The local PBG dealership will now be a CBG dealership. This would seem to be no surprise but for the fact that only 20 kms up the road is a stand-alone Chevy dealership... and I just don't see that one surviving. You won't find a Caddy division involved anywhere here since the local dealership nixed the division from their inventory. I think I'll like the change. -
GM bailout triggers calls for boycott

That's all I would say, yup.
