Offering spartan commercial vehicles has not tarnished the Mercedes-Benz nameplate here in Europe, so I really wouldn't expect it to do so in the US. People know the difference between a Sprinter van and an S-Class.

The recipe has worked for roughly 3 decades, so it's only natural that Honda won't mess with that recipe a lot...

Guessing this will be, in 5-door and higher ride height form, the new XC90 (and also that this theme will be the new S80 and V70 styling language). I'm liking it and enjoying that Chinese ownership isn't constraining the Swedes from doing what they do best: great yet not overdone designs!

"Clubman" is an old MINI name that got reused; "Countryman" and "Paceman" are new names AFAIK with the second one being quite a stupid name IMHO... Been through the gallery and I think this is what a 5-dor MINI is supposed to be on this day and age of the premium-positioned MINI (a 5-door on the regular wheelbase has apparently been spotted, but I really hope BMW cans the idea). Really liked the horizontal tail lights!

Jaguar News: Spying: Jaguar's Compact Sedan Is Slowly Coming To Shape
ZL-1 replied to William Maley's topic in Jaguar
Don't know where they're getting the comment as they themselves observed the padding disguising the c-pillar shape: my bet is that it'll be coupe-ish, given the short deck-lid length noted in the article...- 7 replies

I think its still the Avensis' platform. Thanks for the reply. Interesting that the platform is flexible enough to offer something a little less boring than an Avensis which, to be kind, is a Valium pill on wheels
-
Out of curiosity, what platform is this on? The Auris/Corolla platform or the Avensis platform?
-
The A5 is effectively an in-between model that uses the modular platform also used by both A4 and A6. What BMW is doing is going after that model with the 4-Series designation (it basically gives BMW room to charger a slightly higher price). MB, on the other hand is consolidating its designations because CLK never caught up with the C-Class name band equity, the same way CL-Class never created a name to measure up to the S-Class name. In the end all these are, basically, marketing moves.

And to confuse matters further, they already had a hatchback sedan in the lineup with the 3 series Gran Turismo, the slightly taller hatchback... R BMW is actually targeting different crowds with this and the 3GT, and doing it in a very precise way: this goes after the A5 5-door; the 3GT is sort of a minivan for those who want a minivan wearing the BMW logo (the ultimate driving soccer moms? ). There is a risk of some confusion, of people seeing BMW as a less exclusive brand, but if these variants get developed with faily low amount of incremental spending (new body+interior is way cheaper to develop than an all-new model), and as long as they don't go downmarket to compete with Opel/Renault/etc. it can be a quite profitable strategy.

Given that Chevy is pulling out of Europe, I'm expecting this not to make it here. Also, wondering if the NG Astra will be this exact same car, but with an Opel face...
