Please note the car today has blsck sail panels but originally they were tinted see through. One side was damaged a while back and this being the only car they had no replacment. The repaied it and painted it black to cover the repair. It was good GM did make it a priority to save this car but the 3 known 1990 coupes were crushed a while back. The red car I have been told was flat black, gray and then painted red. It was the only running prototype. Some of the pictures of this car show a non mesh wheel, they were drivable plastic wheels Motor Wheel was looking to make but never went into production. They were lighter but not that much. The first time I picked one up I did not even notice it was plastic till I was told to look at the back side.

The Truth is the 1990 Fiero was kind of sort of built by GM. They took the original styling and adapted it to the front engine RWD F bodies. John Schinella said it was too good to waste. I think you can see how similar the lines of the 1990 Fiero can be seen in the F body.

I was next to a Mallet as it took off and stock sounding it is not! I bad little right if you want to stand out from the general public.
-
I have seen much worse!!! Yes much worse!! At least all the fenders are painted the same color. Never under estimate the abilities of someone able to buy a affordable car. The sad part is they really think they have something!!

Some were the coupe for 1 year I think but most were the 3 door hatch all the other years. From what I recall here are the major differances. Dome hood 2.8 HO V6 Similar to the Fiero V6 with better heads and cam Larger sway bars and stiffer bushings F-41 suspension Badges stickers and floor mount shifter. Rear spoiler Scoop on lower rear quarter Other than that not much is different. We had a company that would special order the F-41 on the 5 door car with the F 41 and one X-11. The 5 doors drove much like the X-11 just with out the bling. Unless you a fan or have the parts it is not worth the expense of converting the car over. If you love a X 11 do it as few are left. The company that has the Citations later bought a fleet of F-41 Cavalier wagons with the F-41 package and V6 engines. They were Z-24 wagond with out the markings for all intents. It was still possible back then to order some odd combo's.

I would not be shocked by a Firebird before GTO at this point but I wish they would break out of the mold if they are doing a car that will be different from the Camaro [less Pony car like]. Believe me the Fiero name is damaged! If you own one you know all the negitive things the uninformed masses say. I have heard them for years. These things catch fire, They are unsafe, There engines blow up, These things are junk. ETC. Fiero's did have problems but most were confind to the Iron Duke powered cars. Most V6 cars were very reliable and will last for 200K miles with proper care. To the informed the Fiero name is not damaged but to the general uniformed public it needs a lot of work before it would be seen in a positive light with the public. Besides Pontiac did little to help the Fiero's rep till it was bringing back the Solstice then it shined a positive light on it's history with the Fiero. Till just a year or two ago many at GM still wished the car had never been built and treated it as such. Time will help mellow the public on the Fiero name like the Corvair but even the Vair still has the stigma yet today. The sad part was the 1965 car was a great car and never got the credit by the general public. I love my car and I would love to see the name used again but I just don't see it in the cards. If there is a Solstice coupe it will be called a Solstice Coupe and not Fiero. Well at least that is my take for what it's worth. Well just have to wait and see. I do know many more people are making repo parts for the Fiero and GM is doing more to protect it's rights toward the car in that respect.

If I were betting. I find the Firebird name a remote chance but feel Pontiac will get hit with it does not look like a Firebird again as they did with the GTO. To reuse a old name on a new car not heavy on the retro can be polarizing as we have seen. The value of the Fiero name to Pontiac is low as it is a damaged name and I see no place for it. The cost to recover the name for use again would be too high. Besides if GM had any use for the Fiero name they would have used it on the Solstice. I am not a Fiero hater by any means as I am a 21 year Fiero owner. But I would be the first to never understand why Pontiac would name a new car with a damaged [in the eyes of the public] name for a new car. Pontiac should just use Banshee on a car as they have on several showcars and not worry about the wailing ghost image. It is just a cool name! All in all it is time for Pontiac to move on and go into the future and try to rehash the past. We have has enough of the name game of plastering a name like Bonneville on a Lemans and Lemans on a Korean Opel. Sometimes going home is not how you remember. I was always partial to the name Ventura roo bad there is no place for it today as many will not remember that car. It would be like a fresh start with little stigma.

Is that direct injection on the top off what looks like a fuel rail? I see four black tubes coming off the rail going into the top of the head near the two intake valves. The head is large but very low profile and has a lot less mass than a DOHC. Less parts mean less cost. Less parts mean less weight. Less parts mean more compact and all would make a more efficent cheaper package than an DOHC. I dealt with a guy who did a engine swap of a DOHC Cobra engine into a 55 F100 na he said next time it would be a Chevy since it would be so much easier to fit in and much cheaper. This is not really any different than GM's approch too. All the advantages of DOHC with out the disadvantages of DOHC. If it works well it could set a trend.

That is what made me ponder a possible Gen II design. Also I know GM said they have taken the two valve about as far as they can with emissions and all with out gong to a 3rd valve a while ago. More Air=More Power and a cleaner burn..
-
There are many sore feelings in GM and with the UAW yet. It is better now than ever but the 1990 Fiero was never publicly shown till just a few years back because of the bad feelings that were going on in and around GM. A lot of people got burn by GM managment and Chevy.

As a 21 year Fiero owner there is a snowballs chance that Pontiac will be making a Fiero now or in the future. They will make a Fiero just after Chevy reintro's a new Corvair. Besides I don't think after spending all this time and money on the Soltice they would be planning a second 2 seater let alone another low priced Mid engine after the second MR2 died. If we see anything it will be a Solstice coupe or convertible on a second gen platform with a bigger trunk in a few years. This was just done to protect them on trademark infringment on repo parts etc. It gives them the say so on who can make what and to what degree of quality. All Detroit MFG's and even the tire companies have been doing this for a while. As for the Firebird I not going to give it a Snowballs chance but after the GTO and everyone saying this is not what a GTO looks like I would rule it out. Even if Pontiac did a retro GTO there are those who would be made it looked like a second gen and not a first gen or vise a versa. Leve the modern retro to Chevy. Pontiac would have to do a very retro car to stop the B#t@hing and right now Pontiac really needs a outstandingly euro styled car but not a retro. In either case it would be difficult for GM to use either name right now on any car. A complete new name would not carry any stigma positive or negitive to the new car from the part models. In either case both are much to do about nothing from Autoblog. I just wish Pontiac would new real names for their new models as the G system sucks.

Where there is smoke there's fire unless your in LA. The pictured engine may not be what was in the Caddy but it might have been a second gen of it if the story was 8/29/06. Either way it would make a great Camaro engine or Vette engine if it has that kind of power along with a grat sound. Add better milage and emissions we might be onto something for the future??
-
Anyone here have a clue to what this is? Is this the long talked about and never seen Chevy 3 valve head? I posted it here as this was on the CamaroZ28.com site and they were all wondering if this may be a glimps of the future Camaro engine. If anything it is GM and a very interesting layout. Some over there were claiming red lines od 6,600 to 7,000. Also it was claimed to have the same low end torque as a LS but it continued where the other stopped. If true this would be a big jump over the Ford 3 valve. All of this is speculation from the Camaro web site and has not been confirmed. So just enjoy till we hear more!

GM Announces Best Warranty of Full-Line Automakers
hyperv6 replied to CSpec's topic in General Motors
When you offer some of the most reliable powertrains this was a no brainer! It will help sell cars as it show GM has confidence in their product. This is important to those who have no clues about cars and just want reliability that will last through the lease period. This will help GM move cars and will give them the press that they feel they offer enough quality to back it up! Now is the time to promote this in advertising and take advantage of it across the board. Get Rick or Bob to state their confidence and tell the public we have you covered! -
Per Bloomberg.com. GM General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, will offer longer warranties on its vehicles in a bid to boost confidence in GM products, two people familiar with the plan said. The extended warranties mark the next phase of an eight- month-old initiative to rely less on cash incentives to generate sales, said the people, who asked not to be named because details won't be announced until later today. GM spokeswoman Mary Henige had no comment. If true I think this will work as if you want to make people feel you really have quality prove it by backing it up. It worked for Hyundai when they offered a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty after there first cars crumbled in the hands of the owners. Good pricing and great warranties can sell a lot of cars as many buy with ther wallet and no their heart. I work with many that do this and they are driving Hyundia's just for those reasons. By the way after Hyundia added the better warranty sales increase from 1999-2005 82%.

Oh, I thought that was the assembly for the Aztec.

They said a lot fo good but still had to throw in how much better the Boxster was. Then they tried to justify ther price differance by saying you can get a 4,000 mile used Boxster for $35K??? This being in new Solstice range???? I would like to know is the Boxster resale really that bad? Or where do they buy their cars as I can't find one for that price and low milage in Ohio!
-
The Pontiac out performed the Boxer at the track. But C+D pointed out that even the lower pricve of the Pontiac that the Used $50K Boxer could be had for just a little more than the Solstice at $35K??? I don't know how they are doing their math as I don't think many would find a Year old Boxer with 4,000 miles for $35K. They mostly said tha the Boxer has a better trunk and steering and was a daily driver vs Pontiacs toy car status. Not in anyway am I going to claim the Boxer a poor car but I can't believe you can find one that new for a GXP price. The GXP is not perfecty but it is the sports car bargin of the industry with more power coming in the future. They can nit pick all they want but the bottom line is it is a fast and great performing an is not going to cost you $20K to 30K more over the 28K price. If you need a trunk Buy a GXP and you would still have money left for a G5 as you trunk. If you need cup holders get off the road as a Sports car should be drive not used as a Starbucks. I think it is funny how no one ever complained about the MR2 trunk over the years. I think the Solstice should be judged for what it is a Sports car and the press should forget treating it as a mini van. As a Sports car it does it's job and does it welll at a great price GM should get the credit for a job well done.
-
Well the performance should be near the C6-R. The present Z06 is 400 pounds heavier and 100 HP shy of the present racer. The Devil should come in if reports are correct at about 100 pounds heavy and may have 35-50 HP more per than the racer. Add in the racer has more drag, lower gears and down force, I can see the street car having a higher top end than the racer. This is comon in high end super cars. The Mclearen F1 street car was faster than the racer for all these same reasons. I expect a 205-210 Top end as once you get to those speeds the drag is so much more harder to overcome. The new car will have better aero but not enough to climb the top speed by a lot more. Now you 0-60 and 0-100-0 times will be killer. Those are usable real world numbers most owners will test themselves. Few will ever try the top end.
-
Gee, they worried more on overall performance and prices VS cup holders and trunk capacity!! At least someone has their sports car priorities right! Good job Kayto, keep up the good work!
-
Car and Driver also did the same review. Good performing car with a lot of small warts. Then they show how it out performed a 53K Porsche but they show the Porsche was a better everyday car and tuned better. This was all well and fine as I would expect for near twice the cost it should be. But then they try to point out the owner bought it used with 4,000 miles for 35K and claime for about the same money you buy a used Spyder for GXP money. No mention that the Porsche value dropped near 50% in 4,000 miles.

With better promotion than they gave the GTO and keep the price not too high. Fit it with high quality materials. and make sure the details are just right this could make a great car for the US market with little development cost. Holden may not be able to build it but we have plenty of plants in NA that could build it if approved. If cost could be contained I would like to see a little more Pontiac coke bottle inspired sheet metal. But with money being tight you need to get the most out of what you have.

Toyota is working hard to sell themselves as a American company and making claims of 10 American plants. Well GM posted this billboard with their responce to Toyota's claim. Not sure where it was but the photo was on a GM blog site. To bad they don't take the lead and be more proactive in their advertising more often. It is time to not be Mr nice guy anymore.

I feel the trunk is a weak argument on this car. It is a sports car! Even though the Miata has a larger truck it is not that much better! Lets face it the Vette and many other sports cars did not have trunks prior to 1978. They only offered a storage space and no one complained Then. People addapted to sports cars well back then. Hell, Offer the soft 5 piece fitted luggage like they did for the Fiero back in 1984. I have a set and it works. As for cup holders I only use mine to hold change. Cars are for driving not having a 6 course meal. The safety groups are now just starting to point out eating and drinking are more unsafe than cell phones. Hmm, Maybe GM should point out the Solstice is safer Than the Miata because it does not have cup holders where it would distract you while driving!!! A new GM safety feature

No they won't, they will say it has too much wind and engine noise at 210 MPH.
