  1. I never had issue with the shifter as the one's I have driven were angled right to the steering wheel. I did not like the spacing of the gate for first as I always hit 3rd. THe cable shifters were just dead feeling. I have had fun with mine as I have had it 24 years. I bought a Auto since I knew they had weak clutches and I knew I would never change it in my Garage. TO day it was a wise move as pedals, slave cyliunders, and shift linkage have proven not to hold up well over time. The Auto I have is programed different than most GM's It will hold a lower gear easy and you can sift it with a flick of your foot either up a gear or down. It is very controlable. The Fiero was never a great car. The front and rear feel detached formn each other in the 84-87 cars. The 88 was good. But for all the money I have in it is a fun car iun a MG kind of way but mine has been reliable. The AC has never even needed refilled. For me taking the T tops out and going for a warm evening drive in the lakes it like driving down the PCH in Newport Beach. Very enjoyable. Also I have some changes to my car to the point many do not even know it is a Fiero. I get a lot of I don't like Fiero's but I really like yours. I guess that is a compliment of sorts. I also have won at car shows on a regular basis. I even at many shows face Lambos, Panteras and other high end sports cars and often I beat them. [i even wax the floor pan on this car as it is that clean] It is fun watching their faces getting beat by a plastic Pontiac. By the way it also has gotten me rides in these high end cars as I have become buddies with some of the owners. That is one cool thing. Help a guy get his vapor locked Pantera started and your friends for life. LOL.
  2. 13.91 with a auto. It is a GM Stage II kit from GM pereformance. THis kit fits the Solstice, Sky and HHR SS. It moved my engine form 235 HP in 1st and 2nd and 250 HP in 3rd and 4th to 290 HP in all gears with 314 FT LBS. THe Sky and Solstice turbo get up to 290 HP and 340 FT LBS with the same kit on the 5 speed. I still keep the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty since it is a GM part. The time is from a friend with the identical set up I have. The hardest part is getting traction with the Pilot carp tires. With launch control it helps. I still can be rolling at 20 MPG and light them up. This is one sweet set up and one is coming for the Cobalt SS with a new intake tube and AC.
  3. Well the Bu is a smaller car as that is what it is ment to be. It is equal to most in its class in size and equipment I own the best W body that was made and can say the Malibu is light years ahead and more competitive than any W body in what GM needs a car to be. Handling in my Comp G is goods but the ride is stiff. The steering is not better or worse than a Bu with the 18 inch wheel package. My GP has no rear seat arm rest and the trunk is not much larger than the Bu. The feel quailty and refindment are what define a car to most people anymore before they move on to trivial things like rear seat arm rest. If the car is old and out dated they will never check the small details anyways. The 3.8 has served it's duty but it needs to be retired. The 3.6 is a great engine and the fuel economy will improve with the addition of DI. The first Bu did not get this since it was not ready yet. As for reliable the W body is not that. Just check with the techs at your dealers. I am going to have to replace my intermediate shaft in my steering for a second time because the simple shaft is worn our again after 35,000 mile a common preoblem with the present W body. I have electric powersteering on my Chevy and at this point it has been trouble free and most people who have trouble have blown a fuse in incorrect jump starting. I am not saying the W is a bad car. It was a good car time has passed by and represents an area GM lags behind in. GM needs a Impala replacment soon as this is a car that makes money and sells in volume. In other words GM needs to catch up as even with the small problems you precieve on the Bu it is still the only one of the two that can meet the imports head to head.
  4. I still have mine and it still is fun to drive and get 21-23 MPG in town with the V6. I wish I had my 290 HP Ecotech in my Fiero. It would be the perfect engine for the car. I estimate it would come in around 2500 pounds with this combo and with near 300 HP it should run in the 12 sec range in the 1/4 mile. My HHR SS will do 13's with 3200 pounds. What happened to the Fiero is a good case study on what was wrong with GM to get them where they are at today. Too much internal conflict with corperate and divisions all working against each other. The less divisions and models will give GM a chance to work as one. Something we have seldom seen from the shrinking giant.
  5. I hate to see them go too but also GM needs to do better as these are to the point I don't want to see either become another Impala W body. Around too long way over due for replacment. I am sure we will get better faster fun cars soon enough from Chevy in the future.
  6. Just look at Great Brittian as that it the path we are following.
  7. I was told it would never happen a year ago when I said GM could if needed just build cars overseas and import them if needed. The UAW hates this as they know they either become competitive or lose out. The American public as a whole have no loyalty to buy American much anymore and will have less in the future. This can be a big threat to the UAW to make changes or be gone.
  8. This is just one of many step GM is doing to cut slow selling and very low volume options. They are cutting the combination of options to save cost just as Honda and Toyota have done for years. The Panel sold in hundreds and not much more so the point of making them becomes a little impractical. On the SS they have cut the two tone interiors and even the roof rack options. If you look at the GM order guide most all models are getting option cuts somewhere. The HHR SS sold under 5K units and even less in 09 with the slow market. I see in the future we will have to buy are GM cars much like the import as they are built with set option packages.
  9. From a ecomomic stand point and practical point GM could add on tho the tech center and center all their efforts from one place. Goodyear here in Akron is working to sell off their old headquarters and build a new smaller one ajoining their tech center. THis would save a lot of $$$$$$$$$$ and keep every one in one place to work out of as a joint team. I expect to see GM move to Warren MI and centralize their operations. Look for the Ren center to be sold.
  10. :smilies-38096: Having been in both the Camaro and Genesis I agree. Both cars have some flaws but both will do fine. They way I see it they Hyunidia is not a bad car now and will only improve greatly with a little time. People now will not regret buying it as as it improves I see them going back to it. If it had some fatal flaw then I would feel better but it has none. As for styling I do not like it but styling is subjective. TOday we have many people buying into the ugly box vehicles (Cube , Element etc) and think they are driving some of the best styled cars on the road.
  11. Wow 70 million. most of which buy own or drive cars. Even Toyota understands you sell cars to all people not just the ones you like.
  12. Yep and Toyota will never get into NASCAR with a push rod V8 and win........ Oh! never mind. Never underestimate the imports they are no longer a third world industry.
  13. I think what most here are missing is the Genesis is a good car for a first try, It is in the room and going to be repecable and well accepted in the market. The key here is like so many other imoports GM and the others can not disreguard this car as Hyundia has proven like many before to learn quickly and adapt. It is not so much what I fear now about the Genesis but what it could and I am sure will become. Just as in the past we should learn not to underestimate. Honda and Toyota both were not taken seriously years ago and we know how that worked out. I fully accept that the Camaro is the better car but I worry will the market accept the Genesis more as time improves it. Working in the performance aftermarket I see less and less you kids fixing up Camaro's and Mustang. What used to be what everyone had to own or wanted to own is not in demand as it used to be. The people I see buying these parts for the Pony cars are getting older and older.
  14. I don't like the task force to but this was a point of how many did GM really sell. Not many in the sedan mode. Was it worth the extra efforts to sell it as a extra model probably not for what little if any money they made. The only place I saw many SS sedans were at the Lordstown plant when I walked the line. Even there they were rare.
  15. I do not cry for or about the Impala SS, I have just made some honest comments about the car. I have driven and presently I own a W body GTP COMP G that is pretty much the same version of the SS for Pontiac with some extras. I too was not sad to see the GP go either even though I own one as I will be honest and admit it falls short for a car in todays marklet. The Impala is a nice car but just well past it's prime vs the new cars on the market. The Impala from the start may have been the best at the time GM had to offer but they can and need to do better. This car is no more an SS than the Malibu SS was. Bob Lutsz has handed down SS emblems need to be earned and not just stuck on the car. Go drive some of the new cars at GM and on the market and they will show the Impala has served it's time in its present form. If you are honest you need to enjoy tha car you or your Mom has and look forward to the better cars GM will offer once this one is gone. Hell just take a Cobalt SS for a spin and even though it is an old car the tune of this car will show you why it eartned it's SS badges. It takes more than slapping a detuned V8 in a car to make a performance car anymore. We need to expect better cars form GM and losing the old out dated cars is the first step.
  16. This is not a matter of catagories but a matter of trends based on needs and wants of the public. The Hyundia is a matter of a trend that fills a need with the young buyers market. Lets face it anything RWD or AWD from Japan and sporty was not affordable to many under 30 years old.
  17. The fact is it is still smaller and lighter. These are important to the import crowd. For Gods sake these are the people willing to drive around in a gutted CRX just to go faster. The bottom line is this is a car that is affordable to the import people who could care less about the Camaro and Mustang. It finally gives them a car they can afford and can try to drift in a parking lot without plastic food trays under the rear wheels of a FWD. [Yes they are doing this. Check out on YouTube]. The fact is there is a growing segment of the market that does not require 8 cylinders anylonger as they understand how to make power with smaller engines. They are also wieght aware as less weight is more performance in more than one area. As time goes on this segemnet not only will grow but be required as with fuel standard predicted to reach 50+ MPG in the next 20 years changes will have to come not because we want them but because the MFG will have to make them. This is just the direction Chevy needs to move in for the next Camaro or RWD coupe they build. Smaller lighter.
  18. I assume you own a new Impala SS or plan on buying one soon? Didn't think so! This is a very old car with a FWD V8 that has to have a computer control the power to keep from blowing the 4 speed tranny out at low speeds. The present car is not anything special. It does not stop very well. It does not turn all that great compard to well tuned cars. It does not go really fast and is just a little quicker than average. The fact is this car does not meet the standards of the SS badge as Lutz sent down with the GMPD division 2 years ago. It is not sold in great numbers and will not be missed by Chevy. If anyone had half a brain and needed 4 doors the Malibu 3.6 V6 Six Speed is a much better car if you need a back seat and for not much more if you want a V8 the Camaro SS is a much wiser buy. We are all here because we are GM fans but very very few of use would ever consider buying this car let alone even go out and really buying one. So then how do we expect people who are not GM fans to think about spending this kind of money for a car that is really old and not that great of a performance car in the first place. And if you want to say you just do not have the money to buy own would you really do it as there are much better options out there at this price point. The LS and LT are 95% of the Impalas they sell to the gray hairs, rental/police fleets and familys looking for a bargin priced car. The loss of this SS is not anything dissapointing. The fact is the loss of the low selling Cobalt SS sedan is a greater loss but few will lose sleep over that too. I would rather see them put a 304 HP 3.6 DI into a Malibu with the Six speed than go throught the motions of a lame Impala SS W body for another year. Just wait I expect GM has better plans for Chevy soon. Note even with the money crunch they are not cutting back too much at GM on Marketing etc. I aausme the lack of product talk is due to the fact till the money problem is handled they will not show their cards. Expect a lot of marketing for Chevy this summer for the Camaro.
  19. the SS was not a true SS. It was not a major factor in sales since most Impala sales are fleet and lesser models. This is no loss as was the GXP GP. I would watch for a FWD replacment here in the near future as it is needed and I would watch for a limited number od RWD V8 Caprices from Holden after the present supply of G8 sedans are finally gone.
  20. The Camaro is just a modern version of an old Pony car not what many consider new gound. Where the Hyundia has taken the size and perfromance of an Eclipes and transfered it to a car that offeres RWD in the kind of performance they like in a Turbo 4 and popular V6. There just is a large import loving market that was crying for a smaller RWD car and Hyundia gave them one at an afordable price. The Chevy is still look upon as old school. As mfor styling it does not matter if you or I care for it because many many other wilkling to sped money will. GM needs to take all the money they can form all buyers noitjust the ones who what retro performance with a modern edge. As for the waste of the Zeta. It was more a matter of bad timing. They did the right thing by delaing it to make it cheaper but it was still a car they needed 5-8 years earlier. Now it is a larger car in times when most people are not looking that big no matter how good the deal. And then toss in the fact Pontiac is going over to make people turn away even more. Lets face it down sizing the Zeta would have not been easy. I would liek to think Holden could do a better job on the Alpha for a proper Torana that will last much longer into the futre. Lets face it the Zeta was a updated older platform. I still have a gut feeling if gas proces do not go sky high in the next two years we will see a limited import of the Chevy Caprice form Holden. It is a no brainer and they can make money even in low import numbers. Besides Holden needs the money. But they will not anounce this till the supply of G8's are used up.
  21. That is the truth. Pontiac had a long history of being the GM redheaded step chid. The only times they did great cars is when they broke GM's rules. GM managment had a division the engineers understood but the corperate big wigs had no idea what to do with it nor give them the proper support to do what they could. At this point there is no point in would of, could of should of. Let just bury Pontiac and fix Chevy to make it right and offer the cars we want and they need.
  22. Then the press would complain it had no head room with the lower top. The G6 was never going to win many hearts let alone souls.
  23. The car is not that attractive to most of us American loving car people. The fact is the large share of the market likes cars like this now and are willing to spend money on them. GM needs to make a Chevy that can compete in this class no later than 5 years from now or they will be very late to the party again. The Genesis give that G37 image at a Hyundia price. Kind of a modern replay of the 1957 Chevy giving that upscale Cadillac image at a Chevy price. People always want more car than they can afford and that is what Hyundia is making them feel like they are getting.
  24. Not enoough! Also does this weight factor in intercooler and other added parts for the Eco? Less weight is more performance stopping turning and going. Is this not what we all want more of? Less power is need to achieve present levels of performance. This leads to lighter stuctures needed and lighter affordable cars. GM is already marketing this car vs the imports as they see the future and where the market is heading. Read the story in the new Hot Rod when it comes out and you will see they even mention this car was originally marketed as a Pony car now they are trying to target the gowing import coupe market that was not even around when the Camaro show car was shown. The fact is the auto market is evolving and GM is going to change with it or die. Even we as enthusiast need to learn to adapt and find everything new is not always bad. Other wise we would be a buch of bitter, narrow minded out of touch folks posting on web sites. [referance is not directed at anyone particuler just a referance to a general way of thinking] Also keep in mind I would never buy the Hyundia but I would lover to have a smaller RWD GM coupe with the new twin tubo Opel V6 snd the 1.4 Turbo base engine. Add some 14 inch brakes and nice tires and wheels in a smaller profile than the Camaro. Oh and a back seat that someone other than LT Dan from Forrest Gump could sit in. THey can keep the Camaro along side but I would love to see a car like this sold in the future before it is just another GM catch up. The Camaro will do fine for the time it is planned to here but the new trend is in another direction. GM needs to start in that direction now to be there in at least 5 years. Longer would prove fatal. The fact we all need to understand is people under 30 less and less car about Mustangs and Camaro. In the past they were the only two to consider. Now buyers do not have the I have to have a V8 sydorme let alone an American Pony car. The new younger buyers ar emore open minded and their money is as good as anyone elses. GM needs to get as much of their money as they can and not let it go to the other companies.
