GM's diesel for North America: It needs a good name.
hyperv6 replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in General Motors
Sounds like a Texaco Gear Lub. I agree a good name is needed as well as education on the new Diesels. This all needs to be a solid marketing program or it will be a failure. They need to make people excited and understand what once was true on diesels is no longer true. Also they need to let them know what they can do for them. -
That is just it. GM is Damned if they do and Damned if they don't. Just look at the up roar on the changes to the Aveo and what it has done to some. 2 door coupes are generally about style and have been for a long time. It was never easy to get into a Cutlass read seat and often there was not a lot of leg room either. If there were no sedan to make up for the lacking issues I would say it is a mistake but the fact is GM has people covered for style or utility. Style is much more important in this class. Often as a car gets more expensive cars become more style over function in many but not all cases. GM made it clear that this car is for the guy who owns a vette that wants a car that hauls more than 2 people but just can't see himself in a sedan. Space issues will not change but sight lines are not a big deal here as people who want this car will adapt. It has mirrors and like with many cars today the rear window gives you little sight or clear vision. The worst vision car GM has now is the HRR or the bunker as I like to call it. This one is not easy to see out the small windows, thick pillars and the head rest in the way. It still sold very well. The issue may keep a few away but the styling will draw more in than turn away.

The wife had Glee on tonight and Chevy has done a little on the show before but tonight they opened the flood gate. First off in the show they spot lighted a new Camaro SS convertible in Blue. They had Two new Corvettes also spot lighted during the show. There were several Cruze spots and the car looked good! Then they even had the ZR1 spot on near the end of the show. GM made good use of their money as they had great placment in one of the highest rated shows and really targeted the youth market. I will have to watch and see what else they show in future episodes. I hope to God they do not do the Volt dance LOL!

The renderings so far have not been really close. As they uncover the car the parts that are seen have been better than rendered. I think the rear end is where the most work was needed and they are addressing it. The real mystery is the center of the trunk lid. It is yet to be uncovered ans show it true lines.
-
The seats have been and issue with some. They can be changed often. The visibility was no suprise as this was made clear when Lutz had to break rules to make sure the car looked like the show car. Same with the back seat. That is why there is a sedan offered. If these issues are a problem you can buy the car that addresses them. Image and styling often has a price to pay.

You left out one....Insane.

I don't mind the wrap feel at all as long as they give me leg room. The Taurus to me has knee issues. The gauges will be similar to the Nox and they work fine the center digital speedo is like a poormans HUD. The radio and center stack looks to be similar to the Nox. With the Screen option gone in the lower models I suspect we will see more buttons. It works fine when you learn it but the first few miles you have to really look at it if you get into a rental. Nothing falls to hand in a glance as it does in the present car. It is not a deal breaker but could confuse some on intial test drives and many not leave a positive impression. The big thing is I want to see the multi color dash of say a LTZ and I would too like to see what if anything is missing ont he ribs. Also the ribs may look better sitting in the car vs from out side the car. As it is I like the present BU interiro but I will give this one a chance till I see it in LTZ trim and finished. THe present Bu interior was not much to me till they added multi colors.
-
Are you sure you don't want to complain about the wires and computer infront of the dash? Once you see it in person and hate it then that will be acceptable. Till then lets let them finish first. Hey I may hate too but I can't hate what I have not seen in full production trim yet. Lets face it a bad picture of a unfinished car is not a good standard to judge a car by. Trust me I am in no way saying this is the best dash I have ever seen. So I may agree with you once they are done. Till then I will give them a chance to finish it. By the way the Nox dash is a pain till you learn the buttons. There are so many and the first time drivers can be confused by them. So in a way the car is over styled in a ergonomically functional way. Also the center vents suck for directing air. It is not something one can not master just a turn off on a first test drive for some. Sales are still doing well. That is one thing the present Malibu dash has. The controls are simple and easy to use as soon as you get in the car. That is one thing I note many older people do like on that car.
-
I see something old 1968 Chevelle SS for the gauge panel. The right side of the dash from a 1960 Impala. Something borrowed 2011 Nox And some thing new. The Chevelle touch is there as well as the new big selling Nox. I would be interested to see the two tone coloring they will use in this interior. That really sets the dash off in the new GM cars. It gives them that more expensive look like you see in a higher priced car. Lets face it they have to do something as if they just copied the other makes the peanut gallery here would crush them for not doing enough.

Toyota will not fail in a year or two. It will take this kind of action over a period of time. If they continue this kind of action they will pay the price. Right now this thing is snow balling and it may hurt them in time. Lets face it just look at how the American public forgive failed and crooked elected officials. If the price and car is right people will also forgive Toyota too. Everyone hates Walmart but they keep growing. And yes the Camaro failed in the end but to condem anything before you see the final package is wrong. This is not unlike failing the new Cadillac Ultra Sedan right now with out ever seeing it just because Cadillac did the Cimarron. Let them finish it and then fail it fully informed if it is still not to your liking. Right now all you can honestly say it it may not end up to your liking.
-
The Malibu has always done well since the last redesign. The key it to cut the fleet sales to rentals fleets. I also wonder if the price will drop or maintain with the new car. It is based on the same Regal platform and I would expect the prices to be below the Buick. So even if it keeps with the same price the added options would make it a better value. Plus no one really ever paid $27K unless they were stupid. Dealer prices have always been competitive in some cases a really good deal if you do it right.

Sorry part of it got lost in the edit. It originally stated. It is kind of like a husband telling his pregnant wife the baby was going to be a loser by ths shape of her stomach. LOL! But then again looking around the other statment could apply to some.
-
Note I did not give this car yet a home run label nor did I say it was a epic fail. Lets see the finished product and see what we end up with. Sorry I find it difficult to fail a car that is not complete and has wires, stickers and computer strapped to the dash with trim and other details still missing. It is kind of like a husband telling wife he was going to be a loser by ths shape of her stomach. LOL! The point is it is too early to draw any final conclutions on any car at the state this one is in. Once they finish it and you still hate it swing away. At this point it is no worse than most and I expect it will look better in final trim. Lets see what we have before we kill it. Besides the public has been embracing some really different interiors of late. This may well just be another.
-
Nice to see you have hope again. I just hope this all holds together as we hope. Too often it has been jerked away. As for name this is how I see it. If it as they say will be like a 4 door Camaro sports sedan they only have two options if they go with the old names. Impala and Impala SS or Chevelle and Chevelle SS. The issue is are they still doing a Impala FWD? If so the Chevelle name would fit well with the Camaro name in marketing a Sport coupe and sedan.
-
Have to ageee with Knight as it is hard to be too harsh on this yet since we have not seen the final production form in full trim. I suspect they may do the interior lighting on the dash like the Buick too and that may play into the ribbing. While so far it may not be the best interior I have ever seen it is not even close to the worst. Most people will be ok with it. Few complain about the cruddy looking Honda dash. While I could care less other GPS and start buttons it does show they will have options in a affordable sedan. It fits with Chevys more for the money theme. THey may not be the cheapest car but they may offer things in this class other don't or if they do they will charge much more for them. The HP thing is not a big deal in this car as long as the SS badge is not on it. There was something about GM doing a Malibu SS and that is where they do need the hardware to back it up. 15 HP or less bettween 4 cylinders in this class is a non issue. Most who buy the 4 judge them by MPG not 0-60. As long as they can merge into traffic they are happy.
-
Interestingly different. Just will have to wait to see the final product to really judge. The ribs will either make it or kill it.
-
The car will be lighter as all cars will be moving this direction. Just at this point Carbon fiber and Aluminum will not be seen till they can work out the cost. It is just way too expensive yet. If they can work it out all MFG will move to them at some point but that is still a if. We could see some first I would have guess on the top line Cadillac but not on on a Chevy excluding the ZR-1 or as options on a Z06 like we already have. Till then things like Boron steel and the like will have too do. Ford the other day also down played the use of compsites for now.
-
I would expect GM to use a special engine in the Caddy flagship. It may be a Chevy based engine but they will do something special as they did with the ZR-1 and it will be an engine only available in that one Caddy. Nothing but the best GM engine will do for this car. If you want it special you have to make it special. As for the trany I wonder where GM is going with this. They like to down the Duel Clutch and 8 speed trannys. I often wonder if they have some new technology of their own coming. Lets face it GM has and still builds some of the best auto trannys in the world. Often when they say no to one thing does not mean they have something else in mind. Like the Zeta Chevy. GM said it was not coming here when ask about the present car but now Motor Trend is stating a new smaller RWD sport sedan is coming on the next gen.
-
I saw this on Motor Trend too. This is good news and kind of fills in some of the blanks GM has left. I just hope GM's new found financial stability holds as we have had the Zeta rug pulled up from under us how many times in the past. I expect this time things will be a lot better to make it to production and stay in production this time.
-
This is good but it would be intersting to see the HHR SS LNF compared with the GMPD upgrade kit. It makes thing more equal as the Turbo Auto and Turbo 5 speed both have the same numbers. They average 23 PSI Boost depending on where you live. GM opened the door on the Auto to the same 290 HP and 315 FT LB no matter what tranny. The Solstice sees same HP but 325 FT LB Auto and 335 FT LB 5 speed with the stronger tranny. The Cobalt SS gets less HP but more FT LB due to the intake system. Note not only did the HHR SS perform better but it also gets 1-2 more MPG.

The new ATS will be starting just under the present CTS and will go up from there the the V. The CTS will in the next Gen move up in price and size a little. We will have a little conflict till they get both new models out. The model and price structure is under revamp as we go here so expect changes.
-
Gut! That is about all we have to go on right now. I still think it will be the Alpha CTS since we have not heard much on the future of Zeta that far in advance. But again we have so little info right now.
-
I would like to see the CTS on the Hybird. I read some that feel this could happen. Hard to tell yet but could is in play yet as far as we know. The more they can keep the CTS and ATS appart the better. Similar but different is improtant here. I knew about the Camaro Alpha but the Buick is still a mystery. That is where I posted a couple weeks ago a insider that talked of a new GN like car with w TT V6. That tells me RWD may be in play and Alpha would be prime. I know you hate hearing this but the V8 while around will become smaller and smaller in numbers sold and built. I see them keeping the present engine upto date but no large investment. With 4 cylinders now 70+% of the market it will only grow and V6 engines with Turbo's will be the main players for upscale in most cars in 10 years. Once GM makes the move for a Turbo V6 in the trucks I see the numbers really dropping on the V8. I expect Ford and Chevy to both offer this and they will move the price of the V8 up that it will be around but may force many into the turbo engine. Or GM could just make a even smaller V8 as that is always on the table and could be a smart move. Bit I agree there will not be two v8 engines and I just don't see a duel DOHC and In block cam coming.
-
1 You can has the numbers but the fact is a TT V6 is coming and I will GM decide what is best. You numbers give us something to play with till then. We wll see domething over 400 HP and one in the 300 HP range. 2 We all know size is different even in the STS and CTS today. But the flavor of the cars is very similar. The CTS works out to be the better so there is no reason to buy a STS. The ATS if left to a 4 and V6 with a Turbo V6 V car would give way to a CTS with the V6 and Turbo V6 with the not available V8 in the CTS V. The key here is to offer more advaced and mre technally advanced engines in the CTS to give people a reason to move up and pay more. We do not want CTS buyers to want the ATS but we want ATS buyers to want to move to a CTS if they can afford too. Tech and marketing are key in this class. You can afford to spend the money on more advanced systems as people will pay for them here. Yes all are not must haves but they all are selling points that attract. It is not alway the point of the best thing in this class but more about the more fancy, exciting and coolest thing that helps sell this class. 4 We are all aware of the use of aluminum. Reclaim keep the price down as it has for years. The fact is Aluminum is only a part of this. Besides GM has already been using much in the way of Aluminum. Just look under a W body and the front Cradle. It save just over 50 pounds alone on the nose of a 03 and 04 and later Imapala Regal and GP. If they can afford a Aluminum Sub frame on a Impala they will incorperate more into the more expensive cars too. Besides the cost is also factored by weight vs MPG and often anymore they will spend more to get more MPG such as with the many engine systems. Compsites and othe alloys will come into play. The industry as a whole is looking to move to and help cut the cost of mass produced Cabon Fiber. Several deals have been struck even with GM. The ZR 1 is not the last car to have Carbon Fiber at GM. At this point all either of us can do is guess as neither of us have the full story and I think we both will find suprises will be in store. We both I think are on the right track in some areas and out to lunch on others. Time will tell what we did get right and wrong.

1 You may be close on the MPG. THe LNF in the HHR at 3200 with an auto is 22 city and 30 Highway in real life. With the Turbo upgrade kit it increases 1-2 MPG confirmed by Bill Duncan of GMPD. This is with the 290 HP and 315 FT LB. Note too the HHR is not the most aero vehicle too and was hindered with a 4 sp auto. 2 You are only looking at it from a techincal side while I look at it from a Marketing side. They can make the TT engine fit if they really want it too. Cost is not so much a factor in a Cadillac vs if this was a Malibu. GM does have plans for a TT turbo as they do not hide the engine much. The idea with the Cadillac is to offer something more than a Chevy. This engine will be added value to the people who pay more for a Cadillac. Also I just will be suprised if they offer a V8 in a ATS. If they do not make the ATS and CTS fundimentally different they will have another CTS vs STS issue on their hands and we know how that effected the STS. They can have to different but quaity cars on their hands if they can give them different options. 3 I just do not see them spending a lot of money on a new second V8. More investment in the V6 but not anymore than they are already doing on the new Vette/pickup engine. Each and every year forward I see a decline in the sales of V8 engines. 4 As for weight 3300 would be a major win. Odds are against it but we can hope. Again more expensive materials are something that Cadillac could do but not Chevy. We will see an increase in the next 10 years of more aluminum and composites and with more use the prices will drop. The cars to use them first will be the Vette and Cadillacs. Just where and how they will be used will just have to wait and see.
