  1. The better new product has helped but I also think that many are shopping for cheaper luxury class cars with the economy as it is. The $50K-$90K cars are being replaced with cars in the $35-$60K price range. Cadillac has got some really good cars in this range and even the people who are used to spending more are even cutting back. I feel this is a good chance for Cadillac to prove themselves.
  2. Sorry but todays economic of scale will prevent that. You already are seeing Opels with modest changes to become Buicks so I would not hold my breath for major engineering changes in the new world car market. Unless a car sells in great numbers like a Silverado they will not make a car for one market anymore. Each model will have to be able to be adapted to other markets to survive. Times have changed and it is either adapt or die.
  3. You ain't seen nothing yet. Just wait till EU make the hood air bags standard. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2007/12/the-truth-about-europes-pedestrian-safety-legislation/ I look at it this way. If you can't get out of the way then we are thinning the heard. My theory has always been that since air bags, seatbelt laws and helmet laws become manditory the country as a whole has become collectively more stupid. The smart people belted up while the idiots bounced off the windshield. Today those who would have died are now texting and driving. We are messing with nature and her survival of the fittest plan. When are we going to make people take responsibilty for themselves. Because of them we have to pay more for ugly cars.
  4. That sounds about right. The pedstrian standard has really challanged the designers with the dimentions they have had to work with. Some are dealing with the bulbus noses well and some are not able to hide them at all. I think they kept this one a lot better than many I have seen.
  5. We all need to stop trying to make every new Buick a GNX or a Roadmaster. This is only a first model and it is targeted at the average car buyer who just wants to get there and have comforts with a little better MPG. While this is not a car I would buy it is a lot better than I expected at first look. It will be interesting to see how much they have improved on the already good NHV in the Cruze. We will get more models in due time and I would expect some perfromance upgrades too. As for home run? Time will tell. It is too early to claim home run or failure here. We really need to see this first hand to judge it as this is not just another rehashed Buick like we have gotten over the years. We know the Opel is a good car and we need to see what they did to it to make it a Buick. The big key is price? Cruze, Regal, Malibu, Lacrosse and the future Impala are all in a very tight price range. It will be interesting to see where this one falls in line. I worry there is not much space between the Chevys higher prices and the Buicks in their normal prices. Either way this car looks wise proves you can't judge a car well just from the doctored camo pictures. It gives me hope for the Bu yet.
  6. Just saw the new photos and it look much better than I was expecting. Also I am glad to see the 2.4 in this one. Now will the public pay the price?
  7. What ever. Talk radio is what it is. Stir the people up and they call in. Shock value works from Rush to Howard. If Obama was against the Volt he would just be singing it's praise. That is how political talk radio works. If you agree all the time no one would tune in. Heck Hanity praises his Caddy Hybrid SUV all the time.
  8. I have to agree. With their time line and what all can happen I would not get too excited yet. There is enough time for 3 different CEO's to cancel this. If it is ment to come here it will. In the mean time just live life as it is and see what comes of this. As long as Mark Reuss is in the mix I am sure all that can be done to make it happen will be done. It is just up to the global economics and GM condition to see what happens.
  9. I too miss the 2 door blazers. I just loved them. While they will never out sell the 4 doors I could see a smaller 2 door doing well if priced right and targeted at the youth market. Make it cool and affordable and it will sell. That is what Jeep has lived on for years. An update of the Chevy Borrego would do well and with a turbo Eco be a lot of fun. A shortened Alpha platform could be used or other car platform like the GMC used for the Granite. AWD will remove any issues of FWD. Borg Warner now owns Haldex so this I hope would make for less expensive quality systems.
  10. Or it could be a lighter car with improvments and as stated all things to all enthusiast. I would have no issue with a RWD Tubo 4 with 300 HP. The only thing wrong with mine is FWD. They just have to keep the weight down and the power up. I have learned a good engine is a good engine. Power is power and I have gotten over cylinder envy. I would not worry too much. If a V8 will fit I you know we will see it even in limited options like a SS.
  11. GM gave several reasons for the SS sedans delay I am sure they would say the same for this. I can't recall them but they are out on the web. I wonder if this could be an Alpha with the delay? I would be odd to bring it here for a year or two and then change it. The Camaro is due also as a 2015 if it is not late. These cars could share a lot. I do not see the Alpha as a bad thing. It would still be a larger car since they have made it clear the CTS will not be a Alpha. It would also be lighter and get the update of everything. I also see it being around longer at the start of a cycle vs the end of one. Also if they could build it here it could make it more flexible to meet profit needs. It could be built where ever it makes the most money.
  12. I fear we will see a lot of that in the future as so many of the parts we used to just pull out of the junk yard just won't cut it anymore. Then the value of the car often will prevent someone from spending much on it. We already see that now with many of the Ferrari's that are not as popular. There is a place in England that salvages them. The car look pretty good but often the rust is to the point it would cost more to repair them than they are worth. In the future we see many cars that will get used up and have few to no running examples around.
  13. I just see little mind set buy most companies to buy one of these for comercial use. It will not be all that cheap and I suspect it will come with most of the options. Since it more than not would be imported in limited numbers it would not be found at the same pricve as a base pick up truck. Even today you can get a Silverodo LT cheap. This car will be for the Camino's that want a car with good performance, ride and styling but still able to haul a small load. Now if it were to be built here on a shared line in the Alpha platform with a wide range of options and engines it would be sold in a comercial edition. That is if they could price it right. Remember GM's new deal is to make money on ever car.
  14. I would not get too excited yet. With the world economy and the claim of 2014 into a lot can happen. Dude I hope you wish comes true. This car is long over due. With the limited nature of the Zeta sedan imports I suspect they Colorado will still be replaced with another small truck. This just suppliments the market with a different option. If they had not killed the Camino in the first place I would have never bought a S-10 if I had the option.
  15. That is kind of like the guys that pop up once in a while with a $25,000 Fiero. GM unloaded some of the factory prototypes for only around $17,000. I think they just price these just to try to drive up the market. The problem is there are just way too many still on the roads. The Rust is finally catching up with many but even then the marker will remain like the Corvairs. My buddy bought a PPG Indy Car Indy pace car. He as far as I know has paid the highest price of around $50K. But it is more than just a PPG car. It was also the missing 3rd Track used Indy Pace car. It was rebodied with the IMSA panels and used by PPG later on. It still had the SD4 engine and was one of only three made. The Indy Speedway has one and GM has the other. Looking at the 80's there will only be a few cars worth much and many will be very expensive and difficult to restore. I figure the replacment market will cater to the Mustang, F body and Vette but many others will try to find NOS plast interior parts to replace items broken or worn out. Many of these cars the inteiors just went to hell. Things like the Reatta dash Imagine trying to repair that one.
  16. Relax! It is all supply and demand. I never said it was a bad car and I do like it. But my own choice for $100K would be a lot of other cars first. The fact they only built 547 units is what has this cars price up so high. It really is a rare car in a world of many so called rare cars. If they had built 5,000 units the price would drop fast. Besides this is really not even a really old car yet It is just reaching the age most states will give it historical status. At the Same age many of the big money GTO's and such were still trading for just over $1,000-$5,000 for some pretty clean cars. As demand rose as baby boomers wanted to relive the 60's witht he cars they could not own the prices went up. It took longer for demand to out strip the supply on most of these cars. Sorry but it is just my own feeling that if I were to spend my own money I would not spend 6 figures on a Regal of any kind. Just too many other cars older, newer, faster and slower cars I would rather have. If I had a large collection and unlimited funds I would find a space for one. But if I only had one or two cars this one would be farther down on the list. A price driven up by demand for only 547 units only needs 1500 people to raise the price quickly. That is just the blessing of a good looking low volume car. I just reserve the right to my original statment "I guess I just see it for $100K there are many other cars I would choose first". I have owned many collector cars and made a lot of money dealing them over the years. I understand very well what makes money. But often money little to do with many cars I am interested in. There are cars I like and then there are cars I make money with. Sometimes they match up and other time they don't.
  17. There are two Lotus. One is Lotus cars and the other is Lotus engineering. GM owned the engineering part. They work together but are run as two different companies the last I saw. Kind of like Porsche Engineering and Porsche cars. They also do outside engineering work for many companies. Porsche has done a lot of work for GM we seldom hear about. The 1988 Fiero front suspension often claimed to been Lotus designed was really GM designed and tuned by Porsche Engineering. Pontiac had to remove the tail lights from the two 2.9 Turbo Fieros they built. They both lite up to say Porsche Eater across the back. Many today try to sell emblems that state the Fiero suspension was Lotus which is a false statment. Even my LNF Turbo Ecotec has a great deal of Lotus engineering work done to it. They did a lot of work with the heads other aspects of the engine. When GM owned Lotus Engineering the branch that did the ZR1 engine many companies stopped using them because they were affraid they may share things with GM. They never did but GM sold them since they were not getting a lot of outside buisness and needed the money. There also really one more Lotus too. The racing branch owned by the Chapman family. They kept the rights to the team seperate from the other two branches. Today there has been a legal fight between two Lotus racing teams and the one that race last year is being replaced with the new team. They are the ones we see in F1 and Indy. The whole Lotus thing has been a mess for years. Lotus is only using Toyota engines not as they are reliable, affordable, light and affordable. Often Lotus has never used a full in house engine. They have made use of GM, Ford, Renault Toyota, Isuzu, Coworth and others. They would take these engines and juice them up a bit but seldom built one from scratch. Same goes for other parts. They have used Toyota tail lights, GM airbags and other bits for years too. I think if they went to Lotus to make an engine a V8 Chevy reworkd by Lotus with a TT turbo or such would make a exclusive engine for GM and Lotus could put it in one of their cars too. I would rather have a clean sheet engine but one has to be realistic dollar wise too. Just if they use a Chevy V8 it need to be much different than even the ZR1 and only used and offered by Cadillac at GM. It had better not be found in any other GM car.
  18. Maybe for the die hard collector. I would just be happy with a low milege GN for a lot less. To me the GNX is like the Lotus Engined ZR1. Neat and nice but overshadowed by later performance cars. The GNX was best of it's breed but I guess I just see it for $100K there are many other cars I would choose first. A co worker cloned one a few years back. It looked just like the real thing outside and with the engine he built it was even faster than the real thing. Not a bad summer daily driver. He had less than $25k in it.
  19. Toth Buick here in Akron still has their GNX as they never sold it. They have kept it and raced it some. The family has a large collecton of cars. They did not modify the car much. The body and inteior I believe are still all original. Not sure what the enigne has done they did put weld wheels and race tires on it. I heard it only has 1/4 mile runs on the speedo and has never been on the road. I don't see these as worth crazy money. It is the best GN to have but lets face it the cars performance is really not that special compared to todays cars so this is a car that would have to appeal to a GN fan.
  20. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/jay-leno/green-garage/4334674 There are other stories. It is a really cool car but even with some great help and a lot of money there is still some work to do.
  21. Well if Lotus could jointly develope a engine with GM for use in the Cadillac with Lotus making use in a sports car would make for a good marketing angle. The real question is with the big development with the new range of cars at Lotus will they get stronger or weaker? Lutz said he feels they have a 60% ability to make it. If Lotus fails in the tough world economy it would look bad on Cadillac if they had ties to them. On the other hand GM may be able to buy them cheap? Again.
  22. No one complained that Lotus designed the 80's ZR1 and Merc Marine built it. While a V12 is cool I am not sure if that is the right way to go. GM needs to avoid the mistakes Benz made with the Maybach. I would hate to see GM have to offer the rebates that were offered on the Maybach. $30,000. More is not alway the solution. I have never been a fan of graftying two engines into one. Not many great engines in history have been created that way. I am not saying they can't do it but it is difficult to get it right vs a pourpose built V12. The Slant 4 Pontiac sounded like a good idea at one time too. So did the 4.3 V6 and it was never close to right till they got the balance shafts into it. GM needs to look at the best and most advanced engines and come up with something that is as good and does not reak of a cop out grafting and mending of a truck or Malibu engine. To do this right GM and someone else[Lotus, BMW, Ilmore, Cosworth or other independent company] need to partner to develope this jointly. Then they can work to make it in low Volume at a profit. The engine in the flag ship is like a part of a cake. You screw up the frosting the cake no matter how good it is sucks.
  23. Hmmm! I believe GM is going to work with Ilmor again in Indy car engines. How about a joint effort with them to build a special engine for the flag ship and other high end Cadillac's. This way it has a racing heritage and a company that is noted for low volume high performance engineering. I am sure Roger Penske would be more than happy to help since I believe is still the largest Cadillac dealer in the world and has tight control on Ilmor. They could even tie this into the world speed Challange with the CTS V and a special edition in the like of a AMG Black.
  24. As I have seen the Cadillac issue on engines. If you want people to pay more you need to give them more. Just dropping in a Vette engine as is would not be enough for the high line cars. You may get away with it in the ATS and CTS but if they plan to to bigger, better and more expensive car they need to improve things a little just from a marketing point alone. The ATS and CTS can share with other GM lines but even there I would like to see at least dome changes in the engine dress up. The larger and more expensive larger cars need to be given something exculsive. If they want to go the Small block route give the engines a little more power. The more HP is not a threat to the Vette as they will still be moving 2 tons or better. Now in a Flagship car it had better be something special if you going to claim World Class and expect someone to plunk down 6 figures plus. You can still use the small block but it better not be just a hold over from the Caprice wagon or even the SS sedan. Holden has some real nice limted engines in the HSV line or even something Cadillac can make and share with the HSV line. Either way this needs to be a limited special SBC if it is a flagship. Or they can broker a deal for a DOHC engine with another MFG. Something shared with the other MFG. We already have had Chevys with Honda engines and Hondas with Buicks etc. How about A Bently W engine packing some real HP. In the future with limited engines and other cars most of these small MFG like BMW, Aston and Lotus will need dance partners for development funds. They need to spread the cost out. This is a good time to make a good partnership with some of these people and share cost to make special cars. But to put in just a stock Vette engine into a car and charge a lot of money for is silly. You can buy a used Police car in a year or two when a department sells off a used Caprice and get the same thing. Though the back seat may not be as comfortable. This is one of the Problems Pontiac faced in the later years with the Trans Am vs Z28. The Trans Am should have offered a few more ponies under the hood for the extra price they charges. All we got were Pop Up headlamps and red dash lights. It is not a sin to base an engine off the Chevy but it is total failure to offer the identical engine unchanged in a much higher priced Cadillac. If you want to convince your car is better than anyone else in class then make the damn thing better. In this class many People know the differance between $hit and Shineola.
