BMW Group and Daimler AG are combining forces to take on rideshare and mobility services like Uber and Lyft. They will invest a combined 1 billion euro to build a new company with a multiprong approach. The new company will offer five services in a single portfolio. Eventually, they will offer an all-electric, self-driving fleet of vehicles that charge, park, and drive autonomously and interconnect with other forms of transport. The five apps include: Reach Now: Offers a range of options for users to get where they're going including a combination of public transport, car-sharing, ride-sharing, and bike rentals. The risk factor has nothing to do with my not buying. It's considered an ethical no-no in journalism to invest in companies you are reporting on. As such, I don't directly invest in any automotive industry stocks. It's one way I try to keep the trust with you guys.

Ford Launching Investigation Into Its Own Emissions Certifications

Ford is launching an investigation into its own emissions and fuel economy certification process according to a statement released by the company. The issue was brought to light back in September when a number of employees reported concerns through Ford's internal Speak Up channel. The concern surrounds Road Load, a vehicle-specific resistance level used in dynamometer testing. Too much or too little resistance will alter the results of the emissions and fuel economy. Road load is determined through engineering estimates that are then validated on the track. Ford is evaluating changes to the road load determination process. The company is quick to point out that none of the potential concerns involve the use of defeat devices and that no determination has been made on the need to restate Ford's fuel economy or emissions labels. Ford has hired an outside firm to conduct an investigation into Ford's current processes and has shared their findings with both the EPA and CARB. The first vehicle to be re-evaluated is the 2019 Ford Ranger with others to follow. -

Sadly, you're probably right that we've got too much hopeful thinking going on. Still.. if Amazon and GM are putting hundreds of millions into them, there must be something to it. I think one of the things they have going for them is they are not shunning existing methods of manufacturing like Tesla did. That put a lot of issues into the Model 3 and Model X that didn't need to be there.- 25 replies

What's a car commercial from your youth that really stuck in your head over the years... it doesn't have to be a car you particularly liked, but one that was unique and you remember well. One of the ones that really stands out for me was this Isuzu Rodeo commercial. A older teacher in a monotone voice slowly instructs a class of coloring 1st graders to "Stay between the lines, the lines are our friends". Then one precocious little girl decides to scribble all over her coloring book. She grows up to buy an Isuzu Rodeo and goes off-roading. For whatever reason my dad got a kick out of it and it really stuck in my head all these years. So what's one that you remember that just sticks in your head?

Survey respondents have indicated that the electronics in the car have issues such the screen freezing or acting as though it was being touched rapidly in multiple locations. This issue would cause music to play, volume to increase to maximum, or the navigation map panning and resizing. Some owners reported issues with trim and paint, with a few, including CR themselves, experiencing a large crack in the rear glass. When the Model 3 came out in 2017 it received an initial rating of average based on the fact that it shares so much technology with the then average rated Model S. Some early adopters reported issues with braking that dropped the score to below average. Telsa issued an over-the-air update to correct the braking issue and the score returned to average. The Model S's rating has been inconsistant as Telsa has made hardware changes over the years. CR dropped the "Recommended" rating from the Model S in the fall of 2018 due to issues with the suspension. Tesla made AWD and air suspension standard on the Model S for model year 2017. The Model X has always had a below average rating and has never earned a "Recommended" largely due to problems with its falcon-wing doors. Tesla is expected to debut a new crossover this year along with the production version of its Semi-truck. View full article

Audi unveiled a powerful new generation of SQ5 TDI today. With 516 lb-ft of torque, this diesel rips to 100 kph (62mph) in just 5.1 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. At the heart of the SQ5 is a new mild-hybrid 3.0 liter V6 TDI with an Electric Powered Compressor (EPC). The EPC assists the turbocharger at times when the exhaust flow is to slow to drive the turbocharger. The full 516 ft-lbs of torque is made available from 2,500 rpm to 3,100 rpm. A 48 volt mild-hybrid belt alternator-start system helps with the automatic engine start/stop. The automatic start/stop is also integrated with the adaptive cruise control (when equipped) so that the engine restarts as soon as the car ahead begins to move. Quattro all-wheel drive comes standard and it feeds power from an 8-speed tiptronic transmission. The transmission is able to disengage the engine while coasting so the automatic start/stop can shut down power. An electric oil pump allows the transmission to engage the next gear needed while coasting with the engine off. The Quattro system comes with a self-locking center differential that splits torque front/rear in a 40:60 ratio. If slippage is detected, power is redirected to the axle with better traction up to 70% to the front and 85% to the rear.
