  1. You CANNOT fit a DOHC 8.3 liter into the space a pushrod 8.3 liter can fit in. FACT!

  3. You seriously have no clue what you're talking about. Do you know that the leaf spring in the Corvette is not what you're going to find on the back of your dad's 1983 F-150? It's a high tech, fiberglass, transverse leaf spring that gives the Corvette so much of it's handling advantage. A 5 liter DOHC with 400hp buys you.... what exactly? In the same packaging, you can get a 7 litre with 600hp. DOHC is a step backwards for the Corvette in overall performance.
  4. Incorrect. In the 80's most import 4-cylinders on the economy end of the spectrum had SOHC not DOHC. GM actually mainstreamed the DOHC 4-cylinder before the imports with the Quad-4. Toyota offered their first DOHC V6 in 1989 putting 151hp at 5200rpm and 159ft/lbs of torque at 4600rpm. This was roughly equivalent to the typical GM 3.1 litre pushrod of the day putting out 140hp (can't find the rpm) and 180ft/lbs with great low end torque. Just two years later GM introduced the 3.4 litre DOHC V6es putting out 210hp @ 5200rpm and 215ft/lbs @4,000rpm. Toyota wouldn't release a V6 that exceeded this horsepower rating for over 10 years. Honda has NEVER offered a DOHC V6 in an Accord, preferring to stick with SOHC. They didn't even bother to offer a V6 of ANY sort until 1994. There were only 2 years since 1991 <1997-1998>where GM didn't offer at least ONE DOHC engine in a mainstream car .... but NO ONE BOUGHT THEM! Could it be something OTHER than DOHC humping was hurting GM at the time? If the GM pushrod V8 sucks so bad, why is it that CTS-V drivers only get to see M5s in their rearview mirror and it took a Porsche of twice the CTS-V's price to beat it around the 'Ring? If the GM pushrod V8 sucks so bad, why is it that the Silverado can out accelerate the F-150 and get better gas mileage while doing it?

  14. In the Sebring's case it's probably a much safer car simply because people stay away to avoid getting the ugly on them.

  18. Well I got a full size, so that likely means an Impala or Taurus... maybe a Malibu. If it's the Impala I won't bother. If it's a new Taurus or Malibu, I'll write something up.
  19. You haven't been to Pittsburgh lately. Three years ago I would have agreed with you, but since that time we have a new, massive, convention center that is also a LEED certified green building. Other massive building and reconstruction projects have taken off in the same time frame. We have 1 new skyscraper, also a green building. There are whole city blocks downtown that are being gutted and rebuilt into green buildings but that still retain their original appearance. Two new stadiums with a 3rd being built as another LEED building. A 5th performing arts center is just being finished up, also a green building. And we've held the "Most Livable City in the U.S." title since 2007.

  21. Mine was a 1994. The brakes on the convertible Cutlass were notoriously under sized. They'd stop the car just fine, but they'd burn up quickly. It was because when the W-body was designed in 1985, they never anticipated it having the weight associated with a convertible nor the 3.4 DOHC. The original W-bodies were designed to be driven with a 4-cylinder or the relatively light weight 3800. By the time the convertible Cutlass with the 3.4 DOHC rolled around, the weight ballooned up nearly 1,000 lbs over the lightest 1987 Lumina, yet they didn't change the brake specs.
  22. Nor when accelerating. Ice compromises everything. In fact, unless you have AWD, when you're on ice the gas hurts you more than the brake. All cars are all-wheel-stop.
  23. As was already said, depends on the car. The Cutlass Convertible could barely get 15k. The CTS lasted 50k on it's original set and still had lots of meat on it when I turned it in. My friend with the Alero burns through them about every 25k but that's also almost entirely highway. I've heard of final model Grand Ams burning up their pad very quickly.
