How much do you want to pay? The scrap yard is paying us ~$400 for it, but we haven't taken them the keys or title yet. Oh, next to nothing. Take the scrap price... its too far for me for that price. You'd be surprised. I figured if you were selling cheap enough I'd drive it for a bit then use it for parts. I'd rather drive a large car that was rolled on the freeway than a tiny new car.

I'm not knowing the diesel Rabbits, but those times are optimistic, and only if its in top tune. It was hard keeping my friends (I think it was an '80) diesel Rabbit going well. It was stick but it constantly had some issue or another. Dad must have put a pound of welding rod in that car over the months to keep it going back and forth. Come to think of it, Dad put a lot of welding rod in VWs of the era (for a GM guy). I remember a few things coming off Dashers and Squarebacks. One of them lost a door, that he welded back on. LOL. Only car I ever experienced slower than that Rabbit diesel was my '81 AMC Eagle Kammback... which initially had a 0-60 time of 59 seconds. After I replaced a missing rocker arm, it was much quicker... 26 seconds. This is where I learned that dragging around a heavy AWD system wasn't really worth it.

If you got 30 mpg, I could see that, as well. The '81 Bonne never hit 25... I'd say the same for the Impala... which was my grandparents. They got the V6 to be frugal... but they didn't want to be without power, so I'm sure it was more aggressively geared.

I even remember the TV series that was launched a year after the movie's debut. I like the last day age of 30 better than 21, even if the original book used 21. I saw Logans Run on TV and we thought it was the coolest thing ever in school the next day (this was before Star Wars)... it then took me 25 years to figure out the name of the movie. LOL! Nobody I described it to remembered any SciFi before Star Wars. Wonder what will be next... Stroker Ace? Crazy Larry, Dirty Mary? Ice Pirates?

That must have been a pretty sickly 3.8 (or badly geared) or the Rabbit must have gotten a helluva start. I own a '83 Impala 3.8 (and a '81 Bonneville 3.8 ) and have driven a '78~'80 Rabbit diesel... and the Impala/Bonne would beat it hands down. I remember back in '87, we got pulled over in the Rabbit diesel because it was not able to accelerate fast enough from a traffic light.

I was wondering where you disappeared to. I'm hearing rumor that Buffalo's Central Terminal is going to be added as part of a high speed train line from NYC to Chicago. You hear anything about that? I figure my next big trip will be out west... not sure how I'd manage doing that in a train. Maybe get the GF on board (no pun intended) with a hybrid train trip out there, and a road trip back in some newly-acquired rust-free California classic.

Actually... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392190/ I'll believe it when its in theaters. Its not a reboot, though... its "Mad Max 4". Thats the first time I've seen people casted for it, but this has been on and off since 2003 or so.

I wish we would have gotten a remake at some point of Logan's Run or Soylent Green, done properly. I've heard Cabin Boy might get a remake.

I agree Hollywood is out of ideas... but keep in mind, a lot of '80s movies were remakes, too... we were just too young to realize it, and it was less obvious, in some cases were they would change the title or intended audience. I wish they would reboot Mad Max.

Interesting. You might just have a hole getting to a size that nobody is comfortable patching. I'd probably fold the plugs over and jam half a dozen in the hole. I'd get it filled. ;-)

To be fair, he has indicated that he wants a new car (or new for him), and so therefore... Frankly, that's his business and not mine. Well, unless it was in another thread, the line "forced to get something sooner than I wanted to" doesn't sound like one is sold on getting a new car right now. If you added more hyperbole to that sentence, it would burst like a ripe zit. The LSS is far from Vanilla Ice's style. In fact, style-wise, it has held up pretty well. And nothing GM offers, short of the ZL1 or the ZR1 is going to find itself being compared to anything Nieman Marcus sells. In any case, style is subjective. What car $15K (after end of year price cuts) car is the size of the LSS? Space is an important component of comfort. The only thing that comes close is the Lucerne... but that ain't selling for $15K as a leftover... IF they are even still making them. Impala and Malibu do not come close to H-bodies for comfort. Yes, its his business if he wants to buy a new car. I'm just offering my opinion that its cheaper to fix the LSS than to buy a Daewoo with a chrome bit in its mouth that is a leftover because nobody else wanted it. ;-)

No, not really. I only drive cars legally, so any car I buy usually requires two trips... one to pick up the title, one to pick up the car, once the plates are transferred. In your case, the owner will sign off the PA title, you will take it to the NJ MVS and they will give you a supplemental form to add info that is required on a NJ title, but may not be on the out of state title. (In some cases, NY cars over 10 years have no title at all, so you show up with a bill of sale and then fill out EVERYTHING on the supplemental form) I would keep the guy's number handy, in case you need additional info. I am pretty familiar with whats on a NJ title, so I make notes on what I'll need ahead of time. I suppose you could pick up the supplemental form ahead of time. At this time you can register it and you should go home with a freshly printed NJ title (In years past, they had to mail the title to you). Sounds to me like you are going to trailer it home or sneak it home. I'm not judging. Remember, in NJ, the registration/plates and insurance are separate issues. With only 7600 made, I think you would have a pretty good shot at getting it registered as limited production (collectable). Remember, however, the only benefits collectable or antique really give you are reduced registration costs and not needing to go through the inspection process... but they will monitor mileage. If you want to insure it with classic car insurance, you can do that with normal plates... generally as long as you are over 25, have a primary (normally insured) vehicle, keep the classic car locked in a garage at night and the classic car has an agreed value of over $3000 or so, you can get the classic insurance. Would it be worth it? Maybe. The registration is a one time $25, IIRC. So you save at least $25 the first year and at least $50 each year on registration costs. Probably somewhat more, as the wagon is in a higher weight class. To me, the benefit is skipping inspection... but if the CC is running clean, that is not much of a hassle, now that the mechanical inspection is history. I wish I could. Too far and not enough time.

Ouch. I feel for ya, Camino... I'm beginning to think your suburbs are farther gone than mine. I didn't think it was possible. I can think of several places in Vineland that would be happy to patch up that tire. Why not just use a patch kit? Takes 3 or 4 minutes... I've had 100% success with my kit from Advanced Auto. Patched a couple auto tires, my trailer tires and the tires on the riding mower... the one tire has about 12 patches now, as the yard is full of sharp stuff.

My interest in flying has plummeted since 2008 or so. I never cared much to fly in the first place, and now I'd rather get a lower GI than fly. I've very uncomfortable with the unnecessary X-ray doses. The terrorists (TSA) have won. I'll drive.

Come on guys... its a brake fluid leak on an LSS. You can replace the entire brake system for a few hundred bucks. I'm sure its something minor. Nothing GM sells today will give you the comfort and style the LSS has. Just fix the LSS. $15K will buy 85K miles worth of gas for the LSS.

Are we sure $35K is not the dealer markup? I find it hard to believe the only 13 '12 Caprices available would be sold at anything near MSRP.

Rims, Steering wheel, Dashboard(IIRC). The hood should be the same as the Caprice and Roadmaster wagon... the unique grill bolts to the front of the hood. Even though the vista window survived on Roadmasters, its still relatively rare, so be sure its in decent shape along with the trim around it. 7663 made in '91. 4347 in '92.

Wagon for $1000? Buy it. Assuming it looks as good in person as in the pictures, its worth it. If you get bored with it, I would likely buy it off you in a heartbeat. I'd buy it right now, if my financial situation was different. What to look for? Well, you want to look over the usual things... and pay attention to the Olds-specific parts, as those will likely forever be difficult to replace. Otherwise, these are pretty darn bulletproof and most wear parts will be available cheaply for decades.

I'm not discussing frontal collisions. In a side impact, integrity of the passenger compartment is important... but beefing up that structure increases mass. And when testing, the entire mass of the Crown Vic is still used to dissipate the force of the impact. Notice that the Crown Vic is not fastened to the ground... that would have taken the weight factor out of the equation. The entire Crown Vic is accelerated, therefore weight plays a role in the crash test. Now, if the vehicle has a sufficiently weak structure, then I suppose the weight works against the design... but what you can't see in a video is the actual forces being recorded by the dummies. If that weight slowed down the sled to reduce the forces on the passengers, then also plays a role in the crash test. F=ma is true in ANY collision. Your acceleration vector will be determined in part by weight. If the G's experienced are great enough, even with a seat belt, your internals will rupture. If you don't want to be crumpled upon impact, you better choose a car that has extra space inside (heavier vehicle) or has more side protection (heavy side beams). Weight therefore plays a role in your purchasing habits for safety.

I'm not saying its a joke, only that it is blown out of proportion by the lawyers. No illness is a joke (unless you are reading Cyanide and Happiness). 15 per 1,000,000 people in 2004. Compare that to 1,000s per 1,000,000 for smoking. The lawyers don't tell people that asbestos is not the only thing that causes Mesothelioma. Nobody is setting up posters showing the general public what asbestos even looks like. If many people here never heard of Romex, what hope do they have of correctly identifying unmarked asbestos. The lawyers are only looking to scare more clients out of the woodwork with their lame daytime commercials being repeated 4 times an hour. This will all replay again as people live longer... and we discover it takes 80-140 years for a different illness to set in. What will it be? BPA? EMF? Peanuts?
