Brand New Combustion System -- Future of the Pushrod V8
SAmadei replied to dwightlooi's topic in Powertrain
Oh, goody, we're finally getting cold fusion! -
While Holden stuff might work differently than GMNA stuff, its my understanding that fixing the airbag problem should not require a code reset. Perhaps wait until you have done 5 or 10 "trips" before trying to buy a scan tool... it might reset itself... but I suspect it still thinks something is wrong. Also keep in mind that some scan tools might not actually clear airbag or ABS codes, only read them... and only clearing OBD-2 codes.

I don't remember the TPS sensors on these being too deeply rooted into the carb, but I don't have a diagram of one handy. I thought I swapped one of these on the '86 307, but I can't really remember. Anyway, I still would recommend you try it. Oh, one other tip... careful to just use carb cleaner to clean up the carb... other cleaners can strip the finish off the carb, at least that what dad used to claim.

I dunno... my cousins are all the wrong gender to even consider it. Keep in mind, that its a social norm that has been forced on us in the last 100 years based on questionable research. Just like the last 100 years of brainwashing by shaving companies to be clean shaven for hygienic reasons... which modern research disagrees with. Or how most Americans would never dream of eating a grub or a rat, but its a food staple in other countries. Mmmm... seared rat on a stick... just like mom used to make. The simple fact is that at one point in relatively recent history (within the last 100K years), humans were nearly extinct, with small population pockets (less than a few hundred... total worldwide population between 5-10K) surviving for long periods in isolation. A lot of inbreeding would have to have happened in that time frame, and yet we seem to have grown stronger from that point. Well, its weird to both of us, as we, for the most parts, share the same accepted norms... but its not universal in the world, or over time. Anyway, even though first cousins might be legally considered incest, I consider it only to be between people who share (or are) a parent... and for the most part, this is likely to have been nearly universally taboo for a long time. In the meantime, there has been much research in the science of attraction (pheromones and such) and one of proposed purposes is that pheromonal attraction is also a sign of genetic compatibility, so that people who are closely related, who would produce genetically defective offspring would not be attracted to one another in the first place, as the pheromones are working at a subconscious level... e.g., causing that "kissing your sister" kind of reaction.

Consanguinity also seems to relate back to the whole six degrees of separation thing... we are all cousins at some point... and even if you take a group of apparently unrelated people, you can still link them together... like this interesting article... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogical_relationships_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States ...where George W Bush is 11th cousins to Barack Obama AND Princess Diana! And Elvis Presley is 21st cousins with Barack Obama.

Not to sound like I'm championing first cousin marriage, cause I'm not, but it turns out that the risks of genetic defects has been grossly overstated. Furthermore, it is estimated the 80% of all the marriages of all time were between people related as second cousins or closer. Uh, yeah... PA also felt the same way. Most of the research in this has been done in the 1880s, and are based, for the most part, on quackery... but 13 states quickly outlawed first cousin marriages... and 13 more by 1920. Only 3 states have outlawed it since... KY (1943), ME (1985) and TX (2005). As for Rome, the evidence of inbreeding is questionable. In any case, it was outlawed in 381 AD in the west and 565 AD in the east... and then the western empire was overrun by the cousin-marrying Visigoths. Today, the only places outlawing first cousin marriage is roughly 30 states, China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Phillipines, and a few south eastern European countries. While much of Europe once outlawed the practice, modern research has also found the risk of genetic problems to be minimal, and have apparently let it become legal again. Famous people who married a first cousin... Wernher von Braun Charles Darwin Albert Einstein Carl Giles (political cartoonist) Jerry Lee Lewis Samuel F. B. Morse Edgar Allan Poe Martin Van Buren H.G. Wells Rudy Giuliani is married to his second cousin once removed. Its actually all a very interesting subject I tripped over a few months ago.

Why are you rebuilding it? Some problems will be fixed by rebuilding, but others can be adjusted out. Judging from your mechanical prowess, I would say try it. The rebuild kits are $35 and aren't as complicated as we think they are... I would also replace any vacuum or solenoid parts on the outside. I would check how much play you have where the butterfly pivots are... and see if the kit has bushings that can be installed, otherwise, this can become a vacuum leak once you clean out the carb. Buying a second carb for cheap might be a good idea if you think you have bent parts (or just rebuilding the second carb, so you limit your downtime). I've rebuilt 2 carbs in my days... about 18~20 years ago when I was much more the newb (and didn't have the Internet as a crutch)... the first one was a Monojet and it came out so-so... but the carb was really clapped out. The second was an older Quadrajet and it came out sweet. I would have rebuilt more, but my '80s cars didn't really need it... and then fuel injection became the norm. It was a very satisfying process.

Like how the Imperial appears to have the exhaust pipes coming out the front.

Is that the state where every brother marries their cousin or something? I thought their official tag line was "The State of official Inbred Living!" Actually, Kentucky does not allow 1st cousin marriage... like CA, FL, NY, MA and several others do.

When testing fuel pump issues, I'll put the car on 'run' for 5~10 seconds before starting it. This turns on most fuel pumps and pressurizes the system. If it starts normally that way, the pump is probably dying, as it is not pressurizing the system fast enough.

Vehicle: Oldsmobile Starfire GT (1975)
SAmadei replied to Elitedragon27's topic in Member's Rides Showcase
That's a great question. I don't think I've ever looked. Lets see what the 1977 Fisher Body Service Manual has to say... "On "H" bodies, integral front and rear frame side rails support the bolt-on front end sheet metal, front and rear suspension systems and other mechanical components"... so its built more like a Mustang or Falcon than an F or X body. -
Simple, the Sonic is so large, there is room for a Spark. Too bad they are not big in the right ways.

They have Monzas with 454s and Sunbirds with 455s... the frame will handle it with the usual improvements. -
They sold those new in 1983? You included the picture, not me. ;-) And your copy does not specify that the vehicle needed to be new.

Fire Truck (pumper) - 1965 GMC 5000

Strathmere is out near me. Between Ocean City and Sea Isle City. Very interesting. -
I can't vouch for a '94 Roadmaster, but my '95 Caprice wagon did pretty nicely around cloverleafs... well, when it was unloaded. Our cloverleafs are generally pretty tight, rated at 25 mph... so typically doing 55~60 in the Caprice would have me leaving the sports cars behind. I look forward to the day when I put it back together... with the Hotchkiss lowered springs and new suspension parts. I had been driving on two broken springs, one was from a sedan (too thin) with numerous worn parts.

'62 Tempest is OK... but I'd prefer a '61... or wait for '63.

Dual axles in the back means the thing will only want to go in a straight line.

Where is the option for the '74 Ventura?

Those clumsy new Subies make your Subie look so much more graceful and sporty. I think the new Subies are slowly working their way into being Azteks.

CNG, What would it take to convert you and the rest of America?
SAmadei replied to G. David Felt's topic in The Lounge
Why would he do that when you can get fullsize vans, Pickups, Crown Vics, etc. running on CNG fairly cheap? Better yet, why would I give up my SUV's when they have EPA certified Conversion kits and I can get a sweet running ride that is Greener than now! Yeah, but how much do they cost after a EPA certified tech installs it? And is it a situation where its certified for a L92 but not a L76. -
I'm a little disappointed to see Imperial Blue off the list. But, then again, I would only purchase a Camaro secondhand anymore.
