  1. Interesting... AFAIK, the '90s GM cars have only one accelerometer sensor at the front of the car... trigger it and all the bags go off, unless a few are defective (or more likely, missing). I suppose with the new side bags and curtains, they're must be multiple sensors... as it makes no sense to needlessly batter the passengers. As far as airbag laws... in NJ there are none, except you aren't supposed to break into cars to steal 'em. For a long time, airbag theft was a major problem, as the bags are expensive from the dealer. I imagine its still the case. In fact, selling airbags still seems to be big business for the local junkyards... when I bought a steering column recently, the airbag was worth twice as much as the rest of the column... I nearly took it out and gave it back to them, but I figured I should keep it as it was an integral part of the steering wheel material. One thing to keep in mind is that airbags are classified as munitions, and so some junkyards might run afoul of those laws. Additionally, this severely limits shipping or transporting options.
  2. Just was out cruising the distant future in my time machine, and oddly enough, decades from now, Dodgefan gets buried in a 2007 G6. ;-)
  3. I've always felt you should NEVER leave no tip... the server may assume you just forgot. OTOH, leave them a tiny tiny tip... 7 cents... then they know you addressed the service level with your tip. That said, I'm pretty easy to impress, service-wise... and usually just tip 20%... its easier to figure out quickly (double the bill and move the decimal) and its generally accepted in the area that 20% is the minimum.
  4. Overtaxed and we're overlegislated. Unfortunately, sprawl is getting the best of us, as well, watering down the local color... and making a lot of the area just too crowded... which is made worse by infrastructure that is just not up to par. Its one of those things where you make two lists... pros and cons... and weight the items accordingly. A heavily weighted pro is that its "home" to me... without that, NH and some other areas would look like pretty green grass on the other side of the fence.
  5. Its funny, as these are all reasons why I like South Jersey. I'm not advocating anything Jersey, however, as I understand our negatives... but it is nice to be able to own a one or two dozen acres of land nears the Pine Barrens where the population is nearly as low as Alaska, yet be in the geographic center of the northeast population hub.
  6. Are even the cheaper Lincolns built here? I like some of the better Lincolns... but I heard the low end Lincolns aren't so hot.
  7. In CR's ratings, the Sebring and Avenger are in their OWN basement class, with a 10~18 point spread between it and the G6 and LaCrosse ('09). The G6 trounces both Mopars in CR and in the general press... and its a what, 3 year older design. I don't care for the G6 that much, but at least its was available in coupe and convertible. Stop hatin'.
  8. Lambos are my thing in the stratoexpensive. However, I don't think I'd fit well... so I would be more inclined towards the Bentley GT coupe. It has a great muscled shape... several of them float around the AC area. Since I tend to desire what I am potentially able to afford, I'm more into the BMW M6 and the Mercedes CL63 AMG. I'd really rather have five 2010 G8 coupes, however.
  9. I have a few now, left to me from dad. Dad did a ton of welding. His welds are all around and are beautiful. I have an old Lincoln ARC welder and a no-name MIG with gas... but both are quite old and the MIG is in sorry shape. I weld with a Harbor Freight $90 MIG I bought. It is crap, but its serving my slag making needs. In time, I imagine I will use the two MIGs to build a better one that uses gas... or I will likely get a better rig... I liked some of the Hobarts for bang for the buck. Of course, I like the low duty cycle and low power, as I will likely use it on sheetmetal mostly. So far, I have MIG'd out two broken exhaust bolts, fixed a broken rake and fixed a broken folding chair. The chair came out pretty nice, as I reinforced all the legs supports... the rake was so-so... then I broke it again the other day... I didn't get enough heat penetration. I got some good UV burn, though! ;-)

    You know, I haven't seen ANY car that hasn't has rusted headlight hardware. The '60s had the screws with the fine thread and they were really hard to get out and the screws are not commonly available. The '70s and '80s stuff have the standard sheetmetal screws, but they rust REAL bad... '90s stuff have plastic retainers and they tend to just break. I like rust over dryrotted plastic. When I get a older car, I usually upgrade immediately to Halogens or better, so rusted hardware is common to me. what I do is take the whole bucket out by pulling the spring off and they wedging the two adjuster bolts out of the way... so the headlight is still encased in the bucket and trim. At this point, I can get to the backside of the screws... Some WD40/PB blaster soaking and some heat will usually loosen them. Otherwise, I will flex the bucket sheetmetal slightly, which stretches the screwhole. I also will use some vicegrips on the split-tip of the screw. They always come out one way or another... then they are all replaced with stainless and the problem never comes back. Cars of the '80s are a particular mess of wires and vacuum hoses. Missing pieces and easily broken hoses and plastic bits are really frustrating... but you have to remember, its better than doing a mountain of bodywork. The parts are replaceable and available and with a good factory service manual, you can put everything back were they belong. I'm not so sure that wouldn't have been the case had it been mint. The original equipment GM put on these cars was a frustrating bunch of annoyance. And with the way new cars are, most folks are not satisfied by a classic that occationally floods or hard starts or has no AC. Fuel injection has spoiled us. If you're going to try to improve the running of one of these cars, you are better off with a solid body that needs some lmechanical work. I'm not trying to pursuade you either way. If you need a daily driver, you are likely better off with something newer... but that will have compromises. I don't think your going to find any MCs or MCSSes that have been in a time capsule... and daily driver usage will result in breakage to 25 year old cars.
  11. Yeah, they look my welds (only started learning in the last few months... only have welded about five things) on a bad day. Yeah, I don't have gas. I also don't create photographic evidence of my welding incompetence. Hilarious.
  12. This is basically it. When they start to grill you, if you answer like you have a brain, you are going home. They only want people who are easily led to the cliff. I was lucky, as for a long time, I was living in a different county from where my jury duty summons go. Instant dismissal. However, my last years of employment allow me to serve, so I tried... but I answered questions the way the lawyers didn't like. What kills me is the incredible amount of time wasting the whole thing is. The one time I served, we spent much of the week sitting in a room waiting for three cases to begin... in all three cases, the lawyers settled, but a hundred people had to sit around all week waiting. That is the wasting of about two man-years. They should pay more than $5 a day and have it come out of the lawyer's paycheck... then maybe some efficiency might come to the system.

  14. The Hurst press release is June 29, 2009... Pontiac was declared dead in May... hopefully Hurst reads the news. The only GM news that came out after June 29 was the Fritz-Lutz war about the G8 not coming here as a Chevy.
  15. I like quite a few flavors... Italian, Creamy Italian, Caesar, Peppercorn Ranch, Ranch, 1000 Island and some of the Vinagrettes. I have to keep swapping to avoid getting bored. However, I really like the new Hidden Valley Spicy Ranch... try it.
  16. Originally, I didn't realize they are only going to make 52 of them. Of course, there are specific federal rules about what can and what can't be a particular model year... and no 2010 G8s will exist... so I don't see how they can market or title them as such, unless they import them themselves. I also find the 52 number interesting... normally it seems that 50 is the magic number that limited edition carmakers limit themselves to to avoid various rules.
  17. April 1st comes around _way_ too fast on the internet. ;-) I wonder if Hurst has the financial muscle to federalize and import G8s? I suppose they do. Hurst G8 wagon or Hurst G8 Ute anyone? However, I'm not getting my hopes up any more for this than the various Trans Am resurrections that are floating around.

  19. I can't leave my GPS on the windshield or dash since its in my pocket... its my cell phone. In fact, I have two of them... the BB Storm and the G1. I only use the GPS for the real time traffic, but it begs me to ask, who would buy a GPS unit or choose a car model that has GPS when every decent cell phone has it or will have it soon for free? Does your nav system have a Satellite view or StreetView? Mine does. I've never needed to pull over to check a map. Granted, not everyone can read a map and drive, but its the same distraction to drive and use a GPS nav unit. Its also not that big of a deal to figure out your position... the streets have street signs. Easy Peasy.
  20. Two more... too slow. The Mini is OK... and is on my short list of compromise vehicles should I continue to need to park in the city... but a hot rod, it is not. It also got squirrelly on cobblestone streets and curb-to-curb potholed streets.

Maybe... but you better keep at least 5 classic cars in your front yard, or I'm calling the township! ;-) I'm not yet ready to leave SoJo... as much as I hate seeing it change, its still home and close to everything. However, I never know when or what will finally push me out. I have contacts at Northrop Grumman and could get good work and set up shop in SE NH fairly quickly. It's just hard to part with the old homestead... but I suppose I could rent it out and visit it from time to time. This is a repeated issue in my life, as there isn't much good computer work in SoJo. Of course, this whole thread poses the question... just what is behind this... for the most part, I always felt rural PA was a good place for classic car enthusiasts. Or are you just looking for a change of scenery?
  22. In gridlock and traffic, RWD and power ARE important if you want to squirt into a lane or have to avoid a pileup at 30 mph. Add in the crap state of many of our roads (maybe not in Cali), and a good RWD setup is more predictable. If you're going to just sit in traffic and let fate take over while you play with your MP3 collection and Twitter your friends, then go take public transportation and leave the roads to the drivers. Amen!
  23. Can you buy/sell plates in Mass? Get one of the old green and white plates... they came as singletons. I like NH, as well, and it will be on my short list when South Jersey finishes turning into North Jersey. The Freestate project rocks.

  25. Not happening. Part of that spirit was caused by divisional rivalry. That infighting kept everyone on their toes. There is no divisional rivalry now. Everyone drinks from the same Kool Aid pitcher.
