Not sure if the oldest ones still survive, but mine began to pile up in the late 70s - it's time for them to go.

I saved them all this time thinking that some day I'd have the ultimate garage and could put them in binders as part of an automotive reference library. That just isn't going to happen.

It varies. Arkus trashed some of them. Others range from ruined to near mint.

Since my teens, I've been carting around all of the car magazines I've collected over the years. I never refer to them, I only look at them when I move them to a new place, and they aren't "mint" anyway. I think it's time to recycle them.

Actually, they often got better mileage than the 6.0. I regret not getting the 8.1 when I ordered my 2001 2500HD. Looking at a 2500 Avalanche, are you? -

As Ocn says, GM trucks are the best in the long haul. The "longest lasting, most dependable" claims are real - my experience has confirmed this for me. And, while I am not thrilled with this new design and would consider competitors, my positive experiences with GM trucks still carries quite a bit of weight. I wasn't thrilled with the design of the later years of the GMT800, and never liked the GMT900 pickups, so this evolutionary new design just doesn't do too much for me. But I did buy a late-design 800, and found it to be a great truck that I wish I still had. The converse is that I thought the styling was a backward step from the earlier 800 I bought before it, and that trend has continued up to the present in my view. The GMT400s, on the other hand, just got better and better each year, and that's what I'd like to see these new trucks do. I'll give them a few years to get it right.

Agreeing with Ocn here. GM is sticking with the more classic look. I see nothing wrong with that.... I do. Ford and Dodge RAM could very well have trucks in the pipeline that could really make these two look stodgy and dated when they hit the market. Remember how the '88 GM pickups suddenly made the '80s F-150 and Ram look like they were old cornflake boxes when they hit dealers? Granted, they didn't exactly set huge sales figures when they debuted, but they did establish GM as a sort of "technology leader" and design champion in the full-sized truck market. If Ford or Ram either one decides to release their own '88 Silverado, so to speak, then these trucks will always be criticized in reviews and fail to attract new buyers. Not only that, but the design of the GMT-400 trucks were so right that both Dodge (Ram? forget it, the history here is too convoluted) and Ford eventually had to rethink their strategy on pickups because of it, and it took Ford almost a decade to have a proper response, which by that time the GMT-400 trucks were due to be replaced. Ten years on the market ('88 to '98) and virtually few changes. That's a truck "done right." Although I'll admit, when I think a little more about it from that perspective, in a certain sense the 2004 F-150 has had an impact on trucks similar to the '88 Silverado. Hmmm ... This is it exactly. The '88s were a revolution, the 2014s are not.

Fleet buyers may order trucks with the hardware I need, but they rarely order them with other options I would add. I need access to both. -

BV: Some of your points are exactly why I want to see what they've done with the HDs so badly. I'm one of those that needs a truck to be a truck, and couldn't care less about the gadgetry. I certainly hope that the option sheet for the HDs is still extensive enough to build what I need without the trendy junk. That doesn't mean I'd want a stripper, just the control that comes with a long option list. When I order a truck, I use that list to optimize the vehicle for my purposes. EDIT: To explain what I mean in other terms, the trucks I've ordered were all pretty loaded - but without leather, and with the carpet-delete option. I know what works, and hope to still be able to build such a truck. -
For my part, I was expecting a more distinctive design - one that parted ways with the 900s in an unmistakable way.

This is the one thing I'm POd about. Structural rigidity be damned, loading large things or people into the back of an extended cab is about to become more of a PITA. In fact, now that the entire industry has moved in this direction, in 5-10 years I could see the gradual phasing out of hte extended cab altogether, and that's kind of sad. It's very sad. It means that my choices are down to one: a regular cab with 8' bed. -

Well Z, I'd say that the criticism largely rests on the styling. As you correctly point out, capability is far more important (with trucks especially). However, these new trucks aren't much of a departure from the 900s visually - and the 900s weren't exactly beauty queens. Also, the front hinged rear doors on extended cabs are a backward step in functionality. Then add in the oddball styling of the dash, and you get an overall impression of "meh" - no matter how good the dirty bits might be. I'm a longtime GM truck guy, and I find myself disappointed so far.
