Well I hope they found some fuel economy improvements in that 5.3 V8 because there are other vehicles of similar size that get 25% better fuel economy. That is why I said at first look, and I want to see the full thing in reality. As far as GM styling, the 6th gen Camaro was a bust, they reworked it a year or 2 later and still doesn't look good. Blazer looks like the Camaro that was a bust. The Malibu has been pretty forgettable the past 5 years, the Silverado doesn't look good, that new Tahoe/Suburban don't look good. I could argue ATS/CTS look better than CT4/CT5, but they are pretty close. GMC styling has been pretty good, not much wrong there, but Chevy/Cadillacs all look very similar to each other and they aren't on a good track.

Mercedez Benz News Mercedes Debuts the 2021 GLA

I like the GLB much more, but this GLA looks better than the old GLA which was rather awkward looking with that squashed down roof. This will appeal to the hot hatch crowd that now want to sit up higher. I think this new A/B-class interior is top notch for this small luxury segment and pretty much none of the competition has over 300 hp, let alone the coming 400 hp. -
At first glance it doesn't look very good, but I'll reserve final judgement for the final reveal. High end SUV segment has really heated up in the past 5 years, they need big advancements to keep Escalade competitive.
-
So GM spent money to develop a completely new engine that makes the same horsepower and torque as the 2014 engine? That was a waste of money then. At first look that new Escalade doesn't look good. But as I said before, GM design the past 4-5 years is really in a rut.

Mercedez Benz News Mercedes-Benz GLA to Appear Tomorrow

I say rear drive is better. They have 5 rear drive SUVs. And the FWD chassis ones will do battle with all the other FWD vehicles in that $35-50K segment, and theirs are the best on market now. Acura, Volvo, Cadillac, Lexus and these companies that had it easy when Mercedes didn't come down to their level are in trouble now. -
Updated with the same horsepower and torque ratings as the 2014 Tahoe/Escalade, etc. My 08 Mercedes engine has more horsepower and torque than the 2021 Tahoe from similar displacement. That 5.3 is almost as ancient as the Tundra 5.7 V8.

Thing is though the A-class, CLA and GLB are getting positive press, where as the old GLA and CLA (which I've driven both) are were not very good and feel like discount Mercedes. They seem to have cracked the code on this new batch of FWD platform cars. The SUV line is now complete and very new GLA 2020 GLB 2020 GLC 2016 (2020 refresh) GLE 2019 / GLE Coupe 2020 GLS 2020 G-wagen 2019 EQ C 2020 Only thing they still need is a Maybach G-wagen. -
Land Rover News: Rumorpile: Land Rover Considering New Entry Model
smk4565 replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Land Rover
Land Rover has so much overlap of crossovers that don't sell in the $45-70k range. They need less of that and to make a Wrangler competitor. Jeep is selling 200-250,000 Wranglers a year, Toyota sells about 150k 4Runners a year, and 4Runner is ancient. And the reason is because those are the only 2 off roaders that aren't G-wagen money. I don't know why Land Rover or GM or someone haven't made a Wrangler competitor already. And I know Bronco is coming, but even that is like 4 years too late. -
These seem very carry over so is this new or a mid-cycle refresh? The body panels on the side look the same, the center console is carry over, engines are carryover with the addition of the diesel. Independent rear suspension is a big improvement as is the air suspension. Good adds there. Front end is ugly on the Silverado, it's ugly here. I don't think Chevy has made a good looking car since Ed Welburn left, C8 looks good, but outside of that, Chevy builds some of the ugliest cars on the road right now.

I think the pricing is good. -
The power levels on the G70 are competitive it when you get into G80 or G90, where the other guys have twin turbo V8s and 400 hp hybrid V6s and stuff like that, the Genesis engines seem old.

The Tesla at $35k outsells any car GM or Ford make. That should concern them already. Once Tesla gets SUVs going against them, they are in trouble. Ford Edge or Chevy Balzer or a Tesla? No contest. -

Amazon and Apple lost money at one point too. I don't think Tesla losing money matters too much, as long as they turn some profit every once in a while, until batteries get cheaper and their model line gets bigger. Tesla will have the Model Y on sale in 2020, that will hit the hottest market segment and sell in large numbers. Roadster is coming in a year or two, that will be low volume but high margin, so not unreasonable to think that by the time the Cybertruck goes on sale the company is profitable. Tesla has issues no doubt, but they seem to be sorting out the production and quality stuff, Model Y volume could help with profitability. -

I love when American car lovers root for an American car company that actually builds cars in America to fail, while still cheering on the "American" car companies that are shipping production to Mexico and China. -

Well Tesla outsells Cadillac so maybe EV isn’t such a bad idea. And Model 3 performance is faster than a Blackwing V8. -

Cadillac sold 17,200 CT6 in China last year. So question is if that is enough to keep production going, and build another 10,000 or so there to export to the USA. I don't know that 30,000 units a year is enough to support a platform, in fact I am pretty certain that it isn't. We aren't talking about exotic car pricing here where low volume is okay. -
But they haven't even made any upgrades. Their V8 has the same horsepower rating as it did in 2012 for the 2020 model. And that 3.3 V6 dates back to 2006. The 2011 Sonata 2.0T has more power than the 2019 Genesis 2.0T. Also keep in mind luxury buyers want the latest and greatest.

They could use a new engine, Genesis hasn’t had a new one in 6 years.

Chassis, platform, architecture, whatever you want to call the mechanical running gear. That is the expensive part, you need to spread that around and CT6 doesn’t have that luxury. Lamborghini is over 50% SUV at this point, it is ridiculous it that is the way it is now. That is why Cadillac should have been building Omega platform SUVs rather than a full size sedan with a turbo 4 engine CT6 that was doomed to fail from the start. -

Should have done an Escalade-V years ago. FCA sells garbage with a Hellcat engine for $75k or whatever they cost. What would otherwise be fleet sale rental cars sold for nearly triple the price. Cadillac could easily get $125k for an Escalade-V and all they would have to do is put on a supercharger, bigger brakes, beef up the suspension, and add some trim or V badges to spice it up. I also think Cadillac could put a Blackwing V8 in an SUV the size and weight of an XT5. A slow V8 powered SUV. Cadillac should have at least 1 SUV that is sub 4 second 0-60 and probably should have 2 but they won’t attract enough buyers anyway so 1 will do the job. -

Except none of those are SUVs. Something like 70% of the market is SUV/truck and probably more for American car companies. Camaro sales are tanking, Impala and all the other large sedans are tanking. Cadillac should be building blacking V8 SUVs, that would outsell any V8 powered sedan they could come up with. -

If they had $10k margin they wouldn't be killing the car. That is pickup truck margin because they have 1 platform for Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Escalade and high price tags to go with the volume. -

But the cost is higher on CT6. GM could be losing money on every one they build because there is no economies of scale. The A8 isn’t adding any major development cost when a dozen cars are on that platform and those engines and transmissions are all shared. -

Audi has sold anywhere from 15,000 to 40,000 A8s per year world wide over the past 10 years, lets call it like 25k per year average. Probably comparable with CT6 in USA and China combined numbers. But the big difference is the A8 is build on the Volkswagen MLB chassis which is also used for: A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7, Q8, E-Tron, Bentley Flying Spur, Bentley Continental, Bentley Bentayga, VW Toureg, Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Macan and Lamborghini Urus. So what do all those sell in volume? Has to be over 1 million units a year worldwide.
