I don't get how Lexus is so good. I can see if they are #1 but not when they have only 2/3 the problems as the #2 brand. I can see why problems have gone up though, the electronics have really increased, even mid size family sedans now have heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheels, sat-nav systems, etc, then through in all the turbos and DI in the engines and technology on that side. Cars are better equipped than ever and more powerful and more fuel efficient too.

A trend I don't like is the high hoods, high belt lines and lowered roof lines to make a sleek look, you can't see out of a lot of these cars. It all different manufacturers too. But everything is designed for crash safety and wind tunnel performance on a computer, so they all look the same.

How much nicer than the CTS? I sat in a CTS luxury and a V-sport at the auto show and while it is better than previous Cadillacs, I think it is on par with the Infiniti Q50 and is not up to A6 or E-class level. One odd thing about the CTS is the back seat bottom cushion is really short and ends then a carpeted section sticks out past that, it wreaks of poor design and cheap construction. The doors on the CTS also have the same handles as the Malibu and they sound like a Malibu when closed. A Cadillac should not have the same door handle as a $20k Chevy. The other question is if they have nicer and better materials than what are in the CTS, why didn't the CTS get those materials, because it could use them, why waste them on a car that won't sell.

The air suspension is only in the rear I assume. My Aurora had the air suspension in the rear and never a problem.

Worst car list: Oldsmobile Achieva was pretty awful, especially near the end of the life cycle. Pontiac LeMans from the late 80s. The only thing that car had in common with cars that raced at Le Mans is that is had 4 wheels and a steering wheel. Buick I would say is a toss up between the early 80s Skyhawk and Skylark,

Perhaps it would also be interesting to come up with the worst car each brand ever made. Cadillac is easy, Cimarron Chevy Vega The other brands might be harder.

The Cyclone and Typhoon are good ones for GMC. The 66 Toronado is as well. The Cyclone and Typhoon would be so easy to recreate now too.

I thought an interesting topic would be come up with the best car throughout history from the primary GM divisions, Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Oldsmobile. Saturn was pretty short lived, so not too many cars to choose from there. It should either be a game changer, or car way ahead of its time or maybe just best best car that brand ever made or that you want want to see return. I'll start with my nominations. Buick: 1987 GNX It is fast by today's standards, for 1987 it was insane, and menacing looking in black. Chevrolet: 1969 Camaro and 1963 split window Corvette Stingray. Cadillac: 1953 Eldorado GMC: 1937 to current Suburban/Yukon XL Since this is one of GM's longest running nameplates and a vehicle with few competitors over the years. Pontiac: As much as I like KITT, I have to go with the late 60s GTO. Oldsmobile: Both Auroras. I am biased but I think the Aurora took Oldsmobile to a higher level and had more technology than other cars of similar price.

It is 56 inches tall, which is as tall as an ATS and it is as long as a Buick LaCrosse, so I doubt it is that poor on interior space or visibility. It does have a bit of a high belt line, but many cars do now.

A friend of mine and I were talking the other day. We agreed the best M3 was the E36, and the best 5-series/M5 was the E39. Similarly, the best 7-series we thought to be the E38 750iL that James Bond drives in Tomorrow Never Dies. So basically all of BMW's best cars were from the late 1990s, at the same time Mercedes was at it's weakest. It seems now that BMW has a bunch of fat oversized cars that are trading performance for quiet ride, and trading steering feel for 1 mpg. Not a good thing for BMW when the S-class and E-class are the gold standard of their classes, and the new C-class looks ready to dethrone the 3-series.

There is no direct competitor other than the Bentley Continental GT, so if you want a big luxury coupe, this is what you have to buy. BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Lexus don't have anything in this class. The ability to lean the car going into corners sounds interesting, adding that element to active body control could make this car corner really flat.

I think it looks stunning. The back end looks sort of like the SLS AMG. I agree with Drew on most coupes looking the same, I miss the straight angled body, square headlight look of the 1980s Mercedes, and the old SEC. But I guess people like curvy now and wind tunnel and crash standards make everything look alike. Things go in cycles though, so the classic 1980s look may come back some day, just as the late 60s Mustang look came back 40 years later.

Dodge brings 2014 Journey Crossroad to Chicago: Comments
smk4565 replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Chicago Auto Show (CAS)
I wonder is 83,387 of them were sold to National, Enterprise and Avis. I don't know why anyone would buy a Journey over any of the other 10 or so crossovers for similar price.- 15 replies

Pretty bad across the board, especially for Cadillac and cars on the Epsilon platform. The drop in GMT900 SUVs is expected, but the new Silverado already losing steam might be a concern. Corvette doing well, I have to think a lot of people trade in their old Corvettes for new ones, so now is probably a great time to get a used C6, dealer lots must be flooded.

It doesn't look like a coupe, nor does the 6-series Gran Coupe. The Volkswagen CC and Mercedes CLS at least look different from the Passat and E-class, so it looks like a different car. This looks like a 3-series sedan. I don't like the 3 and 4 naming scheme either, it was better when it was 3-series with sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon.

They need a 3 liter V6 diesel in a bad way, they just don't see it yet. There are other diesel V6s out there with 240ish hp and 425 lb-ft, whether they be in an Audi A6 or a Ram 1500, the numbers are similar. That is the sort of engine GM needs, with an 8-speed transmission you can keep the engine in it's power band and you'd have adequate acceleration, plus the fuel economy. Rumor is Ford is planning a diesel V6 with a 10-speed automatic for the F150, add that with the drop in weight and they are surely to have over 30 mpg in a pick up, if GM's best offering is 23 mpg, they are screwed.

The Cimarron had a better interior and better suspension than the Cavalier also. Doesn't mean it was worth the price or a good idea to build it.

I agree with all these statements, the ELR isn't worth the price. What makes the ELR $30,000 better than an ATS coupe? And at $75-80k we are at a loaded Corvette or Jaguar F-type or Porsche Cayman, etc, some serious sports cars. And if you want to be green go buy an electric car. The ELR looks good other than the front overhang, but I feel like they wasted the sheet metal on a glorified Volt, when it could have been used on an Alpha chassis with a turbo 4 or a V6. Cadillac could have had a real sports car to compete with the Audi TT, the SLK, Alfa Romeo 4c and cars like that. Imagine ELR looks with a 320 HP V6 and rear drive for $55k.

Cadillac News: Peeking At Global Cadillac VP's Wishlist
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
They already have an SUV the size of the Terrain in the SRX. The path to an good SUV lineup is probably making 2 off Alpha, one small (ATS size) and one larger (CTS size). But then you have a vehicle probably smaller than the SRX would high $30s base, and the middle size SUV would be about $50k base price. That puts them squarely against the GLK/X3 and the ML/X5. The current front drive SRX would have to die off in that scenario. -

If this new flagship flops like the Phaeton, I wonder if GM will pull the plug or stay the course and invest more money in it. -
Cadillac News: Peeking At Global Cadillac VP's Wishlist
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
I can see Cadillac doing a version of the Encore. They will want something smaller than the SRX. BMW has X1, X3, and X5, Audi has Q1, Q3 and Q7, Mercedes has GLA, GLK, ML, and GL (plus the G-wagen). Cadillac isn't going to go to battle with just SRX and Escalade, they will want a piece of that entry market, and small vehicles have a better chance in global markets. I don't get why Cadillac still has to think about a diesel. Mercedes, BMW and Audi all have 4-5 diesel models each and the C-class and A4 should be added to that mix soon. -
I would say decade of disaster. The few good cars of the 1970s were very early on, and those were cars designed in the 60s, and sold from around 1967-1972. There were a few bright spots like the Eldorado convertible or Mercedes SL, the Lamborghini Countach, etc. But super cars and Mercedes SL's look good in any decade. The 1970s brought us the Ford Pinto, AMC Pacer, AMC Gremlin, Chevy Vega, and the Mustang II. Few decades had so many awful cars.
