How many SUVs can do 150 mph? The Porsche SUVs can in top trim, the Bentayga, AMG and M SUVs can easily do it, and the Stelvio Quadrifiglio, Maserati Levante and Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, and I think there is a Ranger Rover SVR, but I don't know if they even sell it here. I guess there are more than I thought, with Ferrari and Lamborghini joining soon, but still, most of the cars on that list are really low volume.

I don’t like the Panamericana grill on any of their cars, other than that I like it. I imagine this thing must be terrifying to drive at 149 mph.

They will fix the fuel economy with the inline six and weight reduction of the new platform, and most of the competition has last decade’s V8 so this isn’t a segment where fuel economy matter that much. And even if the new interior is E-class level it will be the best in segment and it will probably be more like S-class level. This is an area that needs addressed because the GLE/GLS dashes are way behind the rest of the Mercedes line.

The Mercedes GL/GLS has outsold the Navigator for 11 years in a row, that has been no contest for a long time. The GLS outsold the Escalade in 2011, 2012, and 2013 in the USA, I imagine with European and Chinese market sales the GLS is the #1 selling full size luxury SUV in the world. The X7 is in an uphill battle being new, but they'll sell them in China where there is no Escalade and I think they can make a dent in the USA. What will be interesting is to see if Lexus and Infiniti stay at this segment or just fold up shop, because you'll have an all new GLS in 2019 and this all new X7 and an all new Audi Q8 and the Germans can be quite relentless, and they'll ride better, handle better, have more performance, and more tech than those dinosaurs. And how will the Escalade and Navigator hold up to new competition?

They need this badly with how the Navigator is selling. These big SUVs are a small segment compared to small SUV but big time cash cows. And BMW can’t have their M5 and 7-series owners going to another brand for an SUV.

Chicago 2018: 2018 Fiat 500 Becomes All Turbo: Comments
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Chicago Auto Show (CAS)
I think 500’s had no resale anyway and making the turbo standard makes it easier on production to just build one engine and most cars over time see a power in tin the base model. This won’t move sales any but fewer build combos will save them money. -
Some of these auto shows are quite expensive, and a lot of car companies go to CES in Vegas which is at the same time as Detroit. Then you have Frankfurt, Geneva and Paris auto shows, Shanghai auto show, Chicago, LA, New York, etc. Every month there is a big auto show so unless you have a dozen new models to show, you don't really need to go to all these. Especially when most marketing is done online.

I think the hatchback style is a plus for the added cargo room, although I wonder if these hatch style cars are louder than a car with a separate trunk. At any rate, it is still going to be over priced. The Arteon is 5 inches longer than an A4, so it isn't like you are getting full size car for the price of a small Audi, the Arteon is smaller than a Malibu, Camry or Accord. This is a $40,000 mid-size sedan, and this is why the CC sold 3,000 units in 2016.

It looks pretty good but I read a rumored base price of $37,000 so why not just buy an A4 with the same engine for the same money?

This makes zero sense. First off why does the Titanium Elite model have the same hp as the base car, and less than the Sport model. And secondly, they already make a luxury Edge called the MKX/Nautilus. Why would you create a car that is Lincoln priced but not as good as a Lincoln? And if they say the Lincoln brand is damaged (which it is) so they want an alternative, well I got news for you, anyone who thinks Lincoln is damaged isn't buying a Ford either.

Hyundai News:Hyundai Drops First Images of 2019 Santa Fe
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Hyundai
I like how the Kona looks, I think they will sell a lot of those. The Santa Fe looks decent, it at least looks more unique. A lot of Hyundai's over the years look like cars from other brands, I like that they didn't make something that just looks like a Mazda or Infiniti or something else. -
The 188 hp is probably diesel, I think the 2.0 turbo 4 gas with 48 volt that makes 299 hp would be a good option here.

Mercedez Benz News 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Breaks Cover
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Mercedes-Benz
In Europe and China 163 hp is pretty common. The Opel Insignia which is 2 size classes bigger than an A-class has a 140 hp 1.5 liter turbo as the base engine, and a 165 hp turbo as the mid-level. The Ford Mondeo has 125 hp base and 160 hp with the Ecoboost 4-cylinder optional. Renault Megane GT which is about A-class hatch size has 130 hp. -
Mercedez Benz News 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Breaks Cover
smk4565 replied to William Maley's topic in Mercedes-Benz
I don't think the hatch would sell in the USA, the sedan probably will. The GLB spawned off this platform is what is going to light up the sales chart I think. People love crossovers, and they love G-wagens but they can't afford G-wagens to they will buy the GLB. This car will give us a look at the interior and powertrains of all A/B-class, looks promising, I imagine the 2.0 will be the base engine here in the US. -
No, the V12 is rumored to be dead at the end of the current S-class/SL life cycle. The 73's are a 603 hp V8 plus a 204 hp electric motor.

They don't actually still make the Azera do they? The Ionic should sell better than that, it is actually pretty nice and roomy inside for the price point. I think the Kona could be a hit for them and be a good boost. The Sonata seems to be falling apart even since the bland redesign they did on it a couple years ago.
-
Lincoln sales: Ouch! But with that product line, that is what you get. Ford SUVs were down, clearly they lack crossover coupes.

They trademarked other names so there is some rumor that they may change the C300 to C30, E300 to E30, etc so that regular models end with a 0 and AMG models end with a 3. Although that could be just for certain markets or maybe they won't do it at all. I think it dumb to change it, they already have Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Maybach, Mercedes-AMG to separate the model designations and people are already used to it.

The S63 and S73 both have a 4 liter engine, so they can't use liters as a way to identify a car. Similarly, the E400, E43, E53, would all be 3 liters. When you add electric power it muddies those waters, so this is the easiest way to do it, they made an E43 and C43 in the past with a 4.3 V8, so really they just brought back an old name with different displacement. The important thing is they are pushing the engineering limits on the higher tier cars, we could get a GLS that does 0-60 in under 3 seconds, that gets better gas mileage than a V6 Traverse, and that seems crazy and pointless, but the fact that it is possible is exciting.

I think it pretty obvious, if you have a G63 and a G73, that the G73 is the more powerful engine. That probably makes more sense than Camaro SS, Z28, ZL1, in which those model designations could be used in any order. The number designation though is less important to what is under the hood, when you talk about an 800 hp GLS compared to a 420 hp Escalade or 450 hp Navigator or 600 hp Urus.

It makes total sense, S73 is faster than S63. They did make an SL73 limited edition in the 90s with the 7.3 liter V12 that became the Pagani Zonda engine. The 73 series is going to have an 800 hp hybrid system, I’d say that makes them the standard.
