As a 13 year-old, my most desired car was a 1998 Oldsmobile Regency. I really don't know why. It just was. The first car I fell in love with as a young man was my Aurora. Toyota Dealers Offer Discount On Newly Redesigned Tundra By NORIHIKO SHIROUZU - March 9, 2007 10:06 a.m. Toyota Motor Corp. says some of its dealers are offering as much as a $1,500 discount on the basic work truck version of Toyota's newly redesigned Tundra truck, just barely one month after it went on sale. The discount for the Texas-built large truck reflects the intense competition in this lucrative segment, and the challenge Toyota faces in its effort to substantially expand its sales in a segment long dominated by Detroit brands. The discount is a one-month, nationwide program that began this month and is described by Toyota as "another tool," to spur sales, in addition to relatively low APR and lease deals Toyota has already offered since the outset. While the Tundra launch is still in its early stages, Toyota's top management in Japan is concerned about whether the company can meet a target of selling 200,000 new Tundras this year, according to senior Toyota executives who spoke on condition of anonymity. Toyota has manufacturing capacity to build more than 300,000 Tundras between two plants in San Antonio, Texas, and Princeton, Indiana. Some company executives, one insider said, believe Toyota might have rushed too much to build up manufacturing capacity for the Tundra when rising gas prices and an uncertain U.S. economic outlook may continue to impact sales of big gas-guzzling vehicles. Industry executives and analysts have cautioned that the uncertain housing market could weigh on demand of large pickups from contractors. Moreover, Toyota's new truck is launching just as General Motors Corp. is accelerating the launch of its popular Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, which boast the best fuel efficiency in the large pickup segment. Ford Motor Co., the long time segment leader, and DaimlerChrysler AG's Dodge brand, are heavily promoting their rival trucks, with "Truck Month" promotions. Still, some Toyota dealers noted the single-cab version of the Tundra has not sold well as expected, even though consumers were snapping up the double-cab version. Toyota dealers said, among other factors, the Tundra regular cab was too loaded with features and was priced too high and thus has failed to become an attractive vehicle to plumbers, contractors and other price-conscious commercial truck buyers, the very buyers it has set out to dazzle. In some regions, the dealers also said trade-ins they are receiving are mostly Toyotas. "We are trading in mainly Toyota trucks. Practically no domestics," one dealer in the Southeast region said. Toyota's Mr. Smith insisted attracting commercial buyers and those previously loyal to domestic big-rig trucks from Detroit, "that's our goal long term. I don't think anybody had an expectation that in the first four weeks we have a completely different buyer makeup than our current Toyota [truck] customer base." He said of about 8,500 people who bought new Tundras Toyota has sold since last month, about 30% of them did so by trading in domestic trucks. "We're pleased with the amount of domestic trades that are coming in on the Tundra. It's increasing every week." Toyota's new program offers dealers on average three $250 "coupons" they can use per Tundra regular cab to entice the customer. Toyota executives say a dealer could use as many as four coupons per sale to offer the customer as much as a $1,000 discount on the truck, but the total number of coupons they use per truck will have to be three on average at the end of the month. Taking advantage of the Toyota factory incentive program, Southeast Toyota, the independent distributor of Toyota vehicles for Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina, began offering on March 2 $1,500 dealer cash on the 2007 Tundra regular cab by supplementing the program with its own money. Southeast Toyota also will kick back $350 per Tundra sold when a dealer in its region meets the sales target it set on the big truck. It wasn't clear immediately how other regions of Toyota's U.S. market were taking advantage of the program.

  18. Did the E-Van thread make you feel that vulnerable? Sprinters are probably the best for work followed by the GM vans. The GM vans, however, are far superior to either the Dodge or Ford in passenger transport. The ride is just so much smoother and more comfortable. The E-Vans are downright scary.

GM Achieves Technology Breakthrough with Smart Materials Smart Materials will Enable Vehicle Features to Move without Motors WARREN, Mich. - General Motors scientists demonstrated breakthrough developments in smart materials technology at a media briefing today at GM's Research and Development Center. Shape memory alloys and polymers are examples of types of smart materials that GM is developing for use in its products. Smart materials can change their shape, strength, and/or stiffness when heat, stress, a magnetic field or electrical voltage are introduced. Shape memory alloys, and polymers in particular, "remember" their original shape and can return to it, opening new possibilities for many movable vehicle features. GM is targeting to integrate smart materials technology into its vehicles by 2010. "Smart materials will change the look and feel of our cars and trucks," said Larry Burns, GM vice president of Research & Development and Strategic Planning. "With these new materials, functionality can be 'programmed in' to enable innovative designs, improved efficiency, and new and improved features that will make our vehicles more exciting to own and operate than the automobiles of the past." Actuators and sensors made from these materials have the potential to improve vehicle performance and fuel economy, and enable new comfort and convenience features. These actuators and sensors can provide significant benefits when they are used to replace conventional motorized or hydraulic devices by reducing vehicle mass, component size and complexity and improving design flexibility, functionality and reliability. A few example applications include: An adaptive interior grab handle that automatically presents itself from a folded position to make for an easier, more intuitive entry into the vehicle, Active vehicle surfaces, such as air dams and louvers that adjust to govern airflow, improving aerodynamics and performance, and Hood, door latch, and glove box releases for more convenient access. According to Alan Taub, GM executive director of Research & Development, smart materials are building on previous materials advances GM has introduced over the last several years. "These new smart materials follow a long list of material applications we are already using," said Alan Taub. "A few examples include novel aluminum forming processes that provide enhanced body panels and lightweighting, polymer nanocomposites that provide superior mechanical properties at lower cost, and magnetorheological fluids for improved chassis systems. "The properties inherent in shape memory alloys and polymers have the potential to be game-changers in the automotive advanced materials field, eventually leading to vehicle subsystems that can self-heal in the event of damage, or that can be designed to change color or appearance." Smart materials are being used in other industries in various applications including medical devices, cell phone antennas, toys and sporting goods. GM is collaborating with HRL Laboratories and the University of Michigan in developing potential applications. To date, GM has more than 175 U.S. patents issued or pending based on research work and application development in the field of smart materials.

He declined to comment on GM buying DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler, Bloomberg News reported today. The Proton talks remain "extremely" preliminary, Wagoner said in an interview at the Geneva Motor Show. GM is in talks with Chrysler about a possible purchase, people familiar with the situation have said as recently as last week. GM plans to increase global sales with new models and partnerships as Toyota Motor Corp. is poised to overtake the Detroit company as the world's largest automaker. Wagoner, 54, said in January GM would "fight" to regain the global sales lead if overtaken by the Japanese automaker. Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today Proton is also talking to Volkswagen AG on a potential tie-up. Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn confirmed the company is in discussions with Proton, declining to give details because the discussions are ongoing.

  23. A gentleman who owned a Piper Cheyenne II turboprop from my airport days have a 1970-something fullsize Diesel Benz. To look at, what a pile - rubber molding everywhere, huge ugly bumpers, horrid rotted eggshell paint scheme, and that bad Diesel smell. It was slow and pokey, but it had 320,000 miles on most of the original equipment. It also ran surprisingly smooth, both in engine noise and ride quality. But most importantly - it had character. The Mercedes of today does not. They're dime-a-dozen and unashamedly so. I'd love to have a brand-new S500 to impress my friends for a week. But I'd rather have a real Mercedes from the era before 1995.
