Welcome to Choppin' Competition #40! C&G Choppin' Competition hits the big 4-0 and thanks to everyone who has brought their talent onto the site to make it as great as it is! Recently, we've seen what a a graphics design student and GM can do with the rolling billboard that is the HHR panel. Now, we want to see what you can do! Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to customize your own HHR Panel. This can be anything you like - a simple graphics wrap to a full-out rolling J.C. Whitney showcase, its up to you. Remember to have fun with this, too. Silly and satirical entries are very much accepted, so let your creativity out to play. This is your blank canvas to create upon! Please use only the HHR Panel as the base pic for your entry. Some Picture Sources... -HHR Panel @Autodeadline* Size guidelines remain at 800x600, so please size your entry accordingly. Please do not submit your images as Bitmap (.bmp) files. The winner will recieve a GM-related prize from C&G! Deadline is Friday May 11th @ 11:59PM your local time. Good luck and have fun! *Instructions for accessing high-resolution images through AutoDeadline: Replace the bold, orange section of the URL... (http://gm.wieck.com/forms/gm/*query?silverado&Source=all) ...with the make/model/etc you're searching for. Replacing 'silverado' with 'lesabre' will bring up downloadable hi-res images of the Buick LeSabre.

Welcome to Sketch Competition #17! Its never too early to start thinking about the future. Well, maybe its a little early in this case, but there's nothing wrong with it at all. In the near future, the Saturn division will boast a lineup of very modern, very recent products through which it can establish itself as a full-line auto brand. However, of what concrete information we know, there may very well be a few holes in their lineup that could be filled; what fills it is a mystery. You, however, can fill in that gap. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design a vehicle that you feel Saturn needs but doesn't make. Keep in mind your entry should augment - not replace a current or near-future Saturn product. For example, don't design a 3-door Astra, but do consider and Astra sedan, an AURA convertible, or light pickup. Even a Corsa-based subcompact or SKY hardtop coupe is fair game. Bodystyle and car, truck, SUV, or van is up to you as long as its different from what Saturn is making now. Its highly-encouraged that your sketch include at minimum 2 (two) of the following: -3/4 Front View -3/4 Rear View -Interior View Remember, people will be voting based on the overall presentation of your entry, so the more views, the better, including ones not specifically listed above. Also, if you want to include special features, by all means point them out! Aside from 800x600 size guidelines, remember this must be a GM vehicle. The winner will recieve a GM-related prize! Deadline is Tuesday, May 15th @ 11:59PM your local time. Good luck!

Thing is, the Neon SRT-4 actually looked as it should - a hopped-from-the-factory sport compact, not some near-midsize wagon with chunky lines.
-
This was an actual Maxima I saw today. The pic says it all.
-
Just the general nature of goofy tackons and a hoodscoop that I'm sure is totally functional to a poor original design.

Dear Caliber SRT, Please give me my body panels back. I feel cold and naked. Signed, Pontiac Grand Am.

Seriously??

A minimal investment gives key people in the Saturn division the opportunity to understand first-hand why those that own their products like and enjoy their products. It gives them a chance to hear what legacy and first-time owners like, dislike, and would like seeing improved on current and future models. It also provides the opportunity for key figures in the Saturn enthusiast community to meet each other for the first time at a Saturn-based event and foster relationships based on this. C&G was probably the only organization that did not members that regularly meet offline. The numerous tuning and performance clubs as well as SKY owner associations have regular and frequent meets that promote the Saturn product on their own. The entire concept of a Brand Advocate is creating self-sustaining, independent (usually word-of-mouth) advertising for your product/company that requires a minimal of support or investment from that your company. Saturn doesn't pay these organizations to promote their brand; they do so themselves through track events, campouts, day trips, and scenic cruises. Mind you, this isn't fifteen guys with their old Mustangs who meet at the IHOP every third Tuesday and talk about how much better their classic are compared to new Fords; these members are passionate about the brand and the product and have 'converted' many of their family and friends. Stories of Saturn owners bringing former import drivers dissatisfied with the shuck-and-jive Toyo/Honda way of retailing cars into the Saturn family are prolific and downright remarkable considering that - until recently - the cars they made weren't anything special. What did this cost GM? Maybe $21,000 based on the list prices of the airfare, hotels, transportation, etc (and tell GM pays full price for a hotel suite in a building they own). That buys you, what, a page 53 ad in Good Housekeeping? Instead, they provided a small group of people who are influential in their respective owner/enthusiast communites with information, the opportunity to exchange, and that warm n' fuzzy Saturn family hug feeling so they can go back home and communicate positive news about Saturn to more of their friends and family and associates who just may be influenced into buying a Saturn, or at the very least considering one. As far as sponsorships, Saturn has a Mobile Events Tour that travels the country with new product. I've seen them twice at local events in my metro area. The 2008 VUE was the 'official vehicle' of the Boston Marathon. Saturn used to offer startup packs for local car clubs as well as Saturn Motorsports-endorsed racing. They no longer do for a variety of reasons, but vocal outcry of the lack of such events and support may have Saturn reintroducing their club packs and perhaps Motorsports in the future. You also have to remember that Saturn dealerships are responsible for sponsoring local events. The dealers in my area have sponsored school car washes, baseball games, blood drives, and countless other community events on and off the lots. And as for how much GM benefits from this Brand Advocate Meeting? I don't know the answer and neither do you. No one outside GM knows and I'm not sure even they do because this is the first time they've held such an event.

I saw one of these today and I thought of you, my friend. Congrats!

The GM Heritage Center A photographic tour of GM's most historic collection By Brian Dreggors Most people know about this place; if not, its the Holy Land to GM enthusiasts. While Ford and Chrysler proudly display their historic cars and trucks in huge, brightly-lit museums open daily for all to enjoy, GM keeps its most prized treasures in a rectangular building hidden away on the ground of the GM Technical Center, off-limits to the general public. Why? Who knows. But it sure adds allure and makes visitors seem like honored guests, which in a way, we were. Not only did we get to enjoy the grace and beauty of 100+ years of American motorcar, but we had a wonderful catered dinner there as well. Rather than give us a guided tour (citing that most people just wander off within a few seconds anyway), the directors simply opened the doors and let us in. In that spirit, I will do the same. A few quick notes, though: approximately 145 cars were on display this evening, representing about 1/4 or 1/5 of GM's total collection. All but two of these cars are owned by GM. I believe all still run in some capacity, at least the famous concepts do; they even have the keys dangling from their ignitions (define: temptation). If they ever were auctioned, the 1951 LeSabre is valued at $10-15 million while the 1938 Y-Job commands $15-20 million. Don't worry, though; they aren't going anywhere... that is, unless I can get my hands on those keys again... Enjoy.

Toyota spies guilty APRIL 24, 2007 | Link to Original Article @ GrandPrix.com The long-running case against former Ferrari engineers Mauro Iacconi and Angelo Santini, who were accused of stealing Ferrari secrets and giving them to Toyota, has concluded at the Tribunale di Modena with Santini condemned to nine months in prison for industrial espionage and Iacconi facing 16 months in jail for receiving the information from Santini and passing it on to Toyota. Both sentences were suspended but both men say they will appeal the decision. The case relates back nearly five years to the start of the 2003 season, when there were suggestions that Toyota was running a copy of the Ferrari design. Santini, who worked at Ferrari from 1995 until the start of 2002, had moved to Toyota, which was planning to use a second windtunnel called Aerolab, located at Bologna Sant'Agata, just up the road from Ferrari. This employed a number of former Ferrari engineers. The construction of the new windtunnel began around the same time and was completed by January 2005. It is now being used by Spyker after Toyota built a second tunnel at its Cologne headquarters. Ferrari suspected that aerodynamic information had been stolen from Maranello and had ended up in the hands of Toyota engineers and so filed an official complaint. Police investigations led to police raids in both Italy and Germany in 2004 and charges were then made in 2005. The case went to court a year ago. It is possible that German investigators will pursue others who may have been involved. The Cologne public prosecution service has charged former team principal Ove Andersson, chief designer Gustav Brunner and the team's head of aerodynamics Rene Hilhorst but they have not yet been indicted as the Germans decided to wait until the Italian court cases were over. The appeal process will slow that down still further. All of this will be watched closely by Red Bull and Spyker as the two quibble over drawings which Spyker obtained from Red Bull Racing.
