  5. Nah, we're not bankrupt, but GMNA surely is. We plan to survive no matter what happens to them. I was asked to give back 7% of my budget for 2009, I gave back 10%, and 15% for 2010, I gave back 25% when all was said and done. I did it without cutting any of my staff or their hours. We can't take on any new projects now, but I can maintain what we have on our plate so far.

  7. November 22, 2008: 09:46 AM EST NEW YORK (AFP)--General Motors Corp. (GM) will neither fire workers nor close or sell factories at its German Opel unit, the president of GM Europe said in an interview to be published Sunday. Opel has sought loan guarantees from the German government "but it is not bankrupt," Carl-Peter Forster told the Welt am Sonntag Sunday newspaper. "Closures, sales of factories or job cuts are not on the agenda," he said. The regional parliament in the German state of Hesse has voted unanimously to provide Opel with up to EUR500 million in loan guarantees in the event that General Motors declared bankruptcy. GM has said it will run out of cash as early as January if it doesn't get help from the U.S. government and analysts have said it would likely be liquidated if it was forced into bankruptcy. Opel's German staff numbers about 26,000. The German auto maker has been hit by slumping sales and financial problems at its parent company. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper quoted Opel directors Wednesday as saying that the company will cut output next year and is mulling a 30-hour work week. 11. Things are moving along quite nicely with the development of the Chevy Volt. According to Bob Lutz, test mules of the extended-range electric vehicle are now being built atop the soon-to-be-released Chevy Cruze. This is a logical progression since the production Volt will share its Delta underpinnings with the new compact from General Motors when it finally goes on sale in 2010. Prior to these latest mules, the test cars used last-gen Malibu shells that Lutz and the team affectionately referred to as "MaliVolts." Predictably, Mr. Lutz praises the new Delta platform, and we have every reason to believe that it will be leaps and bounds better than its Cobalt forebear, just as that model is light-years ahead of the Cavalier it replaced. Lutz goes on to say that the battery pack, motor and internal combustion engine are all working very well together, even in the freezing cold temperatures around Detroit these days. It all sounds rather promising, though it'd be even better if that first paragraph on the FastLane Blog weren't necessary, right? Link: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/21/lutz-up...to-cruze-mules/

  18. Richard Truett Automotive News November 22, 2008 - 12:23 am ET General Motors directors are considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the Wall Street Journal and Detroit television stations reported. According to local TV reports, GM's board was meeting late Friday night in the company's downtown Detroit headquarters and had added court protection to the list of actions that may be taken as the company's cash supplies dwindle and the prospects for immediate federal aid dim. The Journal attributed the information to people familiar with outside board members' thinking. The paper said such a move would put directors at odds with CEO Rick Wagoner, who has maintained that a Chapter 11 filing isn't feasible because consumers would shun vehicles made by a bankrupt company. GM is burning through its cash reserves and is seeking government loans to stay solvent amid the weakest U.S. auto sales in 25 years. Wagoner and the CEOs of Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC appealed for help before the House and Senate this week. They now must submit plans by Dec. 2 to show how they would put any federal money to good use. GM said Nov. 7 that its cash could fall below minimum amount needed to pay its bills within months. The Journal said GM provided a statement saying the board had discussed bankruptcy but didn't view it as a ``viable solution to the company's liquidity problems.'' The paper also cited GM spokesman Tony Cervone saying management is considering everything possible to avoid a filing. Link: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...paign_id=alerts
