  1. Use some dishwasher detergent on the tires. It'll take it right off. I hate it when they overdo that stuff, and some dealers use tranny fluid instead of tire shine. I usually just spray a spritz of tire shine onto a rag and wipe it all the way around - gives it a nicer, subtle, even shine.

    Sounds like you might have blown a pad. It's apparently a common problem with automatic Cobalts (including mine). It has to do with the neutral-safety switch in the console. Next time I have to bring it in, I'll have them replace it - extended warranty should cover it.
  3. It's been some time since i've updated this thread. I'd been waiting for one bolt for over a month (I'm patient to a fault sometimes), and between that and getting the house set up, the Schwinn just sat in its box in the garage, until this weekend when I had a couple of pockets of free time. First off, the bottom bracket is in. The aforementioned bolt was for the converter that allows me to use a modern bottom bracket. On goes the crank. The axle in the bottom bracket has bolt holes on the ends (you can probably see them in the above pics), and when you tighten the bolts, the crank gets pressed onto the axle. The unsuspecting Royce Union bicycle that will soon be donating all of its organs to bring the Schwinn to life. I've softened my stance on discarding this frame. With a little luck and patience, I may be able to save the frame and convert it to a fixed gear (something I've always wanted). Here's the Schwinn with the wheels mounted. Unfortunately, I have to re-dish the back rim. here's why: The center of the tire should line up vertically with that hole in the little crossmember (the brake caliper mounts there). Re-dishing the wheel will involve loosening all 36 spoke nuts, shifting the wheel over, and then tightening them all back up again. Of course, I need to do it carefully to keep the wheel true and round. This should keep me busy for a while.

  5. Go Camaro, unless she needs the practicality of the 4dr. Unless she's a total ditz of a driver, she shouldn't have a problem with the Camaro with a set of Blizzaks on it in the snowy weather. Oldsmoboi had a set on his CTS when he had it, and he's still here to tell us about it.
  6. I'm kind of in the market for a good appetite suppressant. I could stand to lose about 5-10lbs. Go ahead and laugh, but as a cyclist, dropping that much weight is like upgrading my current bike to a high end carbon fiber bike. I also could use some of the other effects every now and then. Any specific brand(s) you recommend that work better than others? How long after you start taking it do you feel its effects? What dosage did you require specifically to achieve the weight loss - recommended dosages seem to be over the map, and I dont want to take any more than I have to.

  10. I'm getting ~25 in pure stop and go driving. When the warmer weather hits, I haven't done many long trips with it. Last time I did I averaged 36 on a road trip from LI to Cortland. Someone please tell me why I need a hybrid.

  14. I think you meant Grand Prix, although a lightweight N body with a 5.3 could be pretty interesting. What did people think of Hyundai/Kia not even 5 years ago? If a brand whose entire existence up until then has been to make cheap throwaway cars can have its image overturned, surely a brand with a long storied history can do the same. GM has everything it needs to create a solid Pontiac lineup on the cheap. All it really needs is the desire.

  18. 1. Coupe 2. Convertible 3. Sedan 4. Wagon Like others have said, a car purchase for me is one that elicits emotion - practicality takes a back seat. That's what trucks are for. Nothing compares to the sleek sexy shape that only a 2dr coupe can offer. The 4dr cars being marketed as "4 door coupes" all just seem off to me. A well done hardtop convertible would be nirvana for me. Depending on the wagon's silhouette, it could flip-flop with the sedan. I'll let out a little secret: I've had a passing fancy or two about getting a Magnum wagon as a bike/Home Depot hauler.
  19. It would have beren so cool if GM would have followed through with this: Actually, the 2dr SUV in general could stand to make a comeback. Not everyone wants a mommy mobile 4dr. Scratch that - 2drs in genreral need to make a comeback.
  20. No no no, I'm not doing laminate. Engineered hardwood uses a thin layer of hardwood atop a plywood-like core. From the top it looks exactly like hardwood. The finish I picked out is high-gloss elm. It's got a very deep shine. I could only choose between engineered hw and laminate because it's being put directly over a slab, so I need to do a floating floor of sorts. I'm interested to know how bamboo holds up to wear and tear and how much effort you need to nick it vs. hardwood. I'm eventually going to redo the entire kitchen, and I'm open to flooring options that will wear well and not look like crap after I inevitably drop a pot or a can on it.
  21. Well, I've been pretty much working morning till night trying to prep the place so I can move in. I have pics of it here. They were taken right after I took the keys this past Friday. The vintage 1970s full-length mirrors around the fireplace are long gone, to eventually be replaced with thin brick or ceramic brick-look tile. With the help of a friend, I have the majority of the ceilings painted (still one coat to go in the living room and foyeur). I'm hoping to finish all the painitng by Friday (I'll have another friend join us on Thursday and Friday). After that, I'm going to pull out all the rugs (especially the lovely pink ones) and replace it with a nice engineered hardwood the first weekend in March. I'm targeting a mid-March move-in.
