So, look at it this way: $650 plus being able to sell the car for $4000 free and clear, or selling it as is for whatever they feel like giving you, and potentially having a small claims court case on your hands.
-
Just as a point of reference, my dealer quoted someone $5xx to replace an oil pan gasket on a 2008 Malibu (she hit something). No way an intake gasket (parts+labor) would cost that much at an independent repair shop. Have you gotten quotes? You might be better off just fixing the gasket and flipping the car. You'll definitely get more for it.

Paying sales tax on a used car.

Take out of it whatever you want to, but consider this quote from you-know-who: Sounds like a job for GMPD

In all seriousness, how about something like this: http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/1909027233.html Not necessarily this example, but for what you're looking to spend on a Dakota, you can get a GMT400 or even GMT800 with similar mileage with little to no reliability questions. Also try the Ram and the F-150.

ATS-V 6th gen Camaro SS and/or Z28 eventual civilian Caprice - heck, why not throw all the Holden Zetas on there as potential recipients of the GMPD treatment.

Ah, used car salesman. Gotta love 'em. Just make it known to them that they need you more than you need them, and they'll either buckle, or you'll find something else somewhere. In the case of the paint, mileage doesn't matter. It's still an eleven year old paint job. ocn does bring up a good point. It's odd that the door is the only place where the clear is breaking down. This typically occurs on the surface(s) where the sun beats on most of the time. I'd half expect it to also be on the front fender and bed as well, if this truck is still sporting the original paint. You might want to search for evidence of accident damage, either via carfax or by searching for things like mismatched paint, misaligned body panels, bodywork reflecting in the paint surface, etc. Not that it really matters as long as the truck is structurally and mechanically OK, but it could give you ammo to get them to drop the price.

Which one is this - the black one you originally poated? This should be good for you if you get it. If you're worried about the tranny, do yourself a favor and install an auxiliary transmission cooler as soon as you get it. They're very cheap and pretty simple to install yourself. That should lengthen its life significantly. Check the fluid before you buy it, and make sure it's a clear red and doesn't smell burnt. Regardless of how it looks on the dipstick, change the fluid anyway and replace the filter. Good luck, and hopefully this ends your car troubles once and for all.

Tell me about it. Every used Colorado/Canyon I've found that hasn't been beat to snot or has any options at all is hardly worth buying because the price difference isn't that much cheaper than its brand-new counterpart. I guess it's a good sign that GM's residual values are on the way up. It just that buying used isn't the big money saver it once was. Thankfully, my used truck search might be coming to a close. More to come...

Well, the hypothetical person that found this ad went to go see the truck in person, and that person found that the vinyl that's on the truck is the $15/roll variety commonly found at Pep Boys. As such, it's only slightly thicker than electrical tape, and it peels off really easy without damaging the paint. So problem solved. Now, say this truck had a center console that was spray painted bright silver, you know, just because. Would it be possible to remove said spray paint without damaging the original finish of the console, or would the safest option be to spray over it with vinyl upholstery paint? Buying a new console, I think is unnecessary since it's in great shape otherwise.

OK, let's say, hypothetically, you found a truck on craigslist that looked kind of like this: And let's say those stripes were vinyl, and you didn't like them and wanted them removed. Assuming the paint doesn't get damaged while removing the stripes. what's the likelihood that there would be any kind of permanent damage to the paint just by the stipes being there? About how much would a professional outfit charge to remove them, and does such a place exist?

The intake gasket you should be able to do yourself for a few bucks. They're not terrible - you could probably accomplish it in an afternoon. As for the oil pan, Start by making sure the pan bolts are tight and wiping any residue off the bottom of the pan, engine cradle, etc. If it does it again, it's probably the gasket (assuming the pan isn't cracked and there's no issue with the drain plug). You *might* be able to lift the engine with a hoist high enough to wiggle the pan out and replace the gasket. Of course, if it's not noticeable to you and you're checking the dipstick and the level doesn't appear to be dropping, just leave it. It's not worth the effort.

Great car. My grandfather had one with the 3.0 V6 that was based off the 3.8. Ran like a top until the day he totaled it. Only "major" thing it ever needed was a new ignition coil pack.

Once you get the situation with the Camaro sorted out, would you consider a regular cab short bed Silverado - either GMT800, GMT400, or even earlier? Consider: RWD V8 reliable economical for their size Plenty of room to work on readily available can be had for cheap low insurance Even though it might not be your best choice, it does have many of the attributes you're looking for, and should get you to a point where you can afford what you want, without being too much of a PITA for you to maintain.

Thanks guys. My weekend felt like one big party that started Friday night and ended a few minutes ago. I think I need a day off from work to recuperate

http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/cto/1869075498.html Cheap price. Good body. Tired Engine. *insert LS1 here*

Well, whoever ends up having to media-blast it should really avoid trying to do it all in one shot, in order to reduce the risk of seizures.

Yeah, I did see that ad. The guy couldn't speak or spell a word of English. When I asked him if the black on the rocker moldings was paint or stick-on vinyl, he replied, "That part is plastic". I'm not gonna waste my time buying a used car from someone who can't explain what he did to it. Those black stripes are obviously not stock.

This is getting ridiculous. Had arrangements to meet the guy tomorrow after work to take a look, and he called me earlier to let me know someone stopped by and bought it on the spot. 3rd truck I've missed out on so far. I agree about the color - orange and yellow are my two favorite colors on it, and on trucks in general. LI's used car market is pretty overpriced in general, though in the case of the GMT355s, they seem to be priced similarly throughout the Northeast: 8-10K gets you a stripper 2WD 4cyl, 12-15K gets you a decently equipped 3.5L 4x4.

The plot thickens I've always loved this color. His price is slightly lower than Edmunds' TMV for a private party sale. I have an email in to him - will follow up with a call tomorrow.

Use a bigger pot, or use less water. And turn down the heat after the water starts boiling. Trust me, I'm Italian. Cooking macaroni is in my blood. Though I have to say, once you get over the transition period, gas stoves > electric of any kind. You get much more even cooking all around. Electric burners turn on and off to control the temperature, whereas gas burners control temp via the size of the flame. And you also can get an almost instantaneous response from the pot (depending on the pots you use). You can have a pot of rapidly boiling water on a gas stove, lower the flame, and watch the bubbles subside. Cleaning is not that much worse than a glass-top electric stove.

It's the 3.5L I5. I'm not really sure how much these caps go for. I'm assuming it's worth a couple of hundred - probably a lot less to someone who would have to get it painted. It apppears that the side windows slide and/or lift up based on the handles in the pics. So tonneau for cap sounds like a good deal (since I'd rather have a tonneau) if I somehow end up with the truck. I'll go there this weekend and try offering 12.5. If they laugh me out of the place, so be it. I really don't want to spend much more than 10 because I don't want another big payment. Used car prices are so ridiculous around here.

Here's my best level headed response, which is taking just about everything I have: The animals that "aren't cute and fuzzy" either a) can't be saved - as soon as a fish breathes crude into its gills it's as good as dead and b) they reproduce at such a rate that their recovery will take a (relatively) shorter amount of time. A decimated water fowl population alters the Gulf's ecosystem more than you think. They're natural predators for whatever fish they can fit in their beaks. Remove them, and the fish population explodes to the point where there's not enough food for them to go around and they start do die off. Now for the all important part - how does it affect us? Well, with a decimated fish population caused by a decimated water fowl population, you're now paying 20 a pound at any seafood shop for any fish found in the Gulf. Bottom line - if social responsibility isn't enough of a reason to get this cleaned up as quickly as possible, then do it so that it minimizes the effect on your wallet, especially if you like seafood.
