  1. -OR-

People will just buy a Tahoe/Suburban and buy a more efficient (used) daily driver.

I know a guy who did just that, and my family has been doing it for years with our classics and trucks.

I think GM may depend on the reverse... those who tow will go out and buy a used Tahoe/Suburban and buy a more efficient (new) daily driver.

  2. To go off of Ocn & FOG's comments... Since GM isn't too concerned about "platform sharing" and "rebadging" then why not go all the way? If GM is willing to keep the G-Platform vehicles around, then why not keep SIGMA around and share it with other brands? Reskin the STS and give it to Chevrolet as an Impala/Caprice? Reskin the CTS coupe into a Buick Riviera? Similar maneuvers have been done before...

  3. but I would consider the SLS over a Buick.

And here we have GM's troubles condensed into a single sentence.

That's incorrect. It's the exact opposite for a few reasons:

    1) I stated it under the condition that Buick wouldn't continue to exist in the US

    2) The refreshened STS/SLS would be more expensive than anything offered by Buick

    3) I didn't say I'd consider a Chevrolet, Pontiac, or Saturn "over" a Buick.

    4) As a continuation of #3, GM's brand structure is supposed to encourage owners to eventually trade up to a higher brand. The SLS would be the first Cadillac that might actually accomplish that task.

If anything is wrong with GM, it's #4. That concept just doesn't exist between most of GM's brands.

    - Why would a Malibu owner want to "trade up" for a G6 or Aura?

    - Why would a Solstice owner trade up for a Sky?

    - Why would an Astra/Aura owner buy a LaCrosse?

    - Why would a Lucerne owner buy a 9-5, CTS, or DTS?

The only existing "trade-up" appeal is between Chevrolet & Cadillac.

There could be trade-up appeal for Saturn/Opel & Saab.

Buick-Pontiac-GMC actually cover a price scale that shouldn't matter as long as the buyer returns to one of the three in-store brands.

But, getting back to "brand-tiering" -

B-P-G brands need to have products that encourage Chevrolet owners to "move-up." I think the new LaCrosse is a vehicle that a current Malibu owner would consider as a "step up." The Enclave will certainly remain a step up from the Traverse.

The SLS would give a reason for a Park Avenue or Lucerne owner to trade-in. It has the luxurious "personal limousine" feel that coddles the owner & passengers while remaining some-what anonymous… much more so than the ostentatiously reskinned Lucerne called DTS.

  4. The Lucerne platform is already 14 years old, come 2011 that car is going to be ancient, and that is their flagship. Much like the DTS does to Cadillac, it just makes the brand seem outdated and geared toward senior citizens. A Buick car on Delta could work if it is nice, and not just a rebadge.

Yes and no. The G-Platform has received several updates and changes since 1994. I don't personally agree with the strategy, but the Lucerne/DTS platform is not identical to the 1st gen Aurora.

If the platform cannot accommodate a modern power train, then it should be phased out. If the Lucerne/DTS can be upgraded to handle the 6-sp auto, then I'm perfectly fine with a 3rd generation of vehicles off of the G-Platform.

  5. I don't think Pontiac needs a rebadged compact Cruze and a rebadged compact Chinese Buick. The compact Chinese Buick should be sold in the US as a Buick... with standard Quiet Tuning and Buick's standard warranty.

If Lucerne is to "soldier on" like the DTS, then the Lucerne needs a 6-sp automatic and 3.6l V6... which is assumed as planned for the DTS.

  6. I guess it depends on how compact is defined, in Buick terms. I personally see Buick compacts larger. The exercise was to use exisiting models to offer creative, design and styling inspirations for new Buick compacts. Everyone has a different image of what they think this compact should be, many say Buick doesn't listen enough to their potential buyers. I was simply offering a creative outlet to provide input on the direction Buick enthusiasts think they should take, in a fashion that is simple for the most creatively challenged enthusiast — existing vehicles. Don't be afraid to use your imagination.

Next time, you might want to explain the topic in your initial post (as you did above) to prevent confusion... :)

The only one I agree with here is the Infiniti EX35. It could be rebadged and sold as a Buick tomorrow AFAIC.

  7. I've only caught one episode of this show... not bad, but tragic depending on the outfit.

It was recent - the episode where they each had to design a custom outfit for their very own drag queen. Funny... but I just can't handle the ridiculous "over-the-top" drama that reality shows strive to deliver. Reality my ass.

Just Jack - Stars in Their Eyes... sums it up.

  8. ford = we'll add weight to every vehicle we sell, just to get high crash scores...

GM= we won't update anything for years......

Oh come on... Epsilon will only be around for 1 generation before major revisions... same with Delta. :)

Even though the W-platform & G-Platform are still around, both platforms have received several updates over the years.

  9. Hello Josh!

Long time no hear... Yes, many of us are here. Some have taken leave. Returned. Left. Return... and so on...

    Same ole... Same ole...

How's your dad if it's not too personal to ask up front and out in the open?
