  1. Cadillacs image would be better served in Europe with a 12 cylinder motor. maybe even before diesels. For some reason gas guzzling 10 and 12 cylinders garner more respect than do silverados and tundras. To be considered a true lux brand in Europe it is almost essential in my opinion. I know: lesux does not have one-- but Toyota at least has a presence in F1, however small. That goes a long way in its own right. Does one have to do with the other? Of course the product has to be there, too but I think they are linked to some degree.. Look at the Z06 and corvette as a line for instance. Continued success in LeMans racing while stomping the the astons and ferraris has changed the perception of many people to the point of looking past qualms about the interior. Auto racing, prestige, and history are all very much a part of marketing in Europe. After that maybe a different president and some slight changes in foreign policy may work in Cadillacs favor. Either way, I wouldnt sweat it too much as their foot is in the door.
  2. Yup thats pretty much right. The car wasnt without some other problems though. Namely exhaust fumes entering the cabin, engine seals and other challenges from the rear engine set up. I think from what I recall those were mostly early on issues...They also used sway axles and if i am remembering correctly the tire pressures were very specific. This was before my time and I wasnt around for Naders campaign but from what I gather it was like I first said, something the general American public was not familiar with. Not necessarily bad or ill designed (for the most part) He also had a problem with the steering wheel as a dangerous design due to risk of the driver getting impaled...I think NAder had/has a problem with pretty much everything anyway though. Basically all his claims about the corvair were later debunked but the damage was essentially done already. Comes with the territory of being numero uno. Just like the battles toyota will encounter with the greenies because of their new Tundra...No free passes and what a great way to get some publicity. Audi?? who the hell are they. What good does it do to bring down a chump? Now though they are hard to ignore, especially if you watch racing. They are really quite impressive if thats your thing. My dad for instance still cites what you state above at the mere mention of the name Audi. Funny what you remember sometimes.
  3. Regarding the Pinto, It was slated to be the safest or one of the safest cars of its time. It was originally planned to include a rubber bladder inside the gas tank and have dual front air bags. They nixed the idea because of cost and again later decided to not issue the recall for the tanks because of cost again. The whole "cheaper not to and would rather deal with the cost of settlements debacle instead of paying for a recall deally". Really sad commentary. The corvairs demise was mostly part of Naders crusade. The tremendous oversteer because of the setup wasnt necessarily bad just not what the general public was familiar with at the time. I guess under those terms it could be considered unsafe.
  4. Id like to see how it would look without the shiny chrome buck teeth grille. Maybe in black or gun metal. Just less shiny. Maybe some talented artist out there could show us how thatd look? I dont really see that looking too bad anyway. Not nearly as bad as the photoshops that are shown most of the time.
  5. When I was growing up the paint tasted so much better than it does now. I dont understand why they decided to unuse lead. Especially in cars. At least I can still enjoy NASCAR. Thats some there good entertainsment. I wonder what they get per mile. At least four, id guess. Lets see what Toyota gets. I bet if Honda were in theyd be getting five or six... at least.

  7. This is tantamount to screaming "fire" in a crowded movie theater. And in as much as you cant leave the hospital with a newborn without an approved car seat, the effects of this run deep. Nevermind the inherent concern for a child that most parents generally exhibit. A retraction will not assuage the guilt this could have put some concerned parents through. This will raise some questions. The obvious one did they knowingly go to print with this. Car crashes arent even tested at these speeds. What were the two seats and their relationship to the publication, CR.Will the parents who read this try to seek some action against CR What will happen to CR's credibility. When you challenge the conventional wisdom and established methods of safety testing you had best be damned sure you know what the f@#k youre doing. This is totally unacceptable and needlessly alarmist.

  10. Wonder if this recall got delayed at all. Seems like it was in the works for a while... A recall like this potentially effects everyone on the road. You dont want to be driving behind, next to or anywhere near one of these things with unresolved problems that already have seen injuries and accidents. Experience is a bitch of a teacher.

They called themselves 'the Vagabonds.' They sort of invented SUVs. I agree with the last part of the statement, the generalization confined to auto manufacturers, holds water. How historically accurate is Tucker? Its kind of funny to me because ive joked for years about Asian cars odometers spinning a wee bit faster. Im guessing someone is exploiting a soft spot in the "rules".

  14. Sacrificing a for b makes no difference as long as the bottom line-- employment/unemployment remains status quo--with no regret. As long as there is an auto industry in this country that provides jobs and an economic kickback most people will ask whats the difference? Instead of it being GM's ~150,000 employees (and declining) it will be Toyotas 40,000 (and growing) + Hyundais + Hondas etc etc. that we align ourselves with? But thats not good enough for me and I dont see it that way. Great for the economy, I suppose, better for competition but Built in the USA or Made in the USA and Born from the USA are not all the same to me. As Americans you should all take some sort of pride and solace in the industry spawned in this country by people like Olds, and Ford, Henry Leland and Durants and even Louie Chevrolet, born in Switzerland who was employed by FIAT after arriving in NYC from Montreal before emmigrating from Europe. Not about nationalism or prejudice just it is what it is. These men started their namesakes and forged their leagcies here in this country. Toyota was well on its way in Japan from the 30's long before their recent conquests and seemingly unstoppable growth propeled them into the unassuming and almost mystifying title of an American company. Almost unbelievable for me. America's car co.? ---maybe. Sure seems that way lately but when I think of SONY or Panasonic or Toshiba I dont think of American companies or USA. Economics, sentimentality and waxing poetic aside I do not consider Toyota any more American than BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai or Opel. --I dont think the Japanese would consider Toyota as American either, just a wild guess on my part but theyd probably look at you like you had a penis dangling from your forhead if you said that they are American. In the end its all business and comes back to the almighty dollar or yen. Then again, Toyota may be more American than some give them credit. I found this rather interesting. I suppose the one thing I am glad about is that the jobs these companies are creating are for foreigners right here.

  16. I was a little dissapointed to see the only success so far has been shaking down the local gas merchants but he has talked about going after the "big oil" co's, too. The interview I saw he seemed adamant about getting to the bottom of these record profits and so on. Granted of course attorney generals will always stick their noses somewhere if it means good press for them.

Im willing to wager the numbers indicate tundra sales will not win conquests but either introduce new buyers to the market,i.e. those who dont even have domestics on their radars or tacoma customers who want something a little bigger. As it is the Tacoma has swelled in size and enjoys great sales. Guess well find out soon enough. Its not as much sarcasm as it is humility.

  25. They dont have the same costs/overhead that GM does. For every 5 billion GM spends in health care toyota is spending 1 billion, for one example.
