Lutz talks about a streched Kappa for Pontiac (MT)
turbo200 replied to Northstar's topic in Heritage Marques
A stretched Kappa makes so much sense it boggles my mind as to why GM wouldn't do it. Make a stretched Kappa and then give us a 3-series competitor for Pontiac, or even 1-series, I don't care, make it a coupe and a sedan, make a Solstice hardtop. Make a stretched Kappa a 4 seater Buick vert to compete with the Lexus SC430, price it at around 40-55k, beautiful styling, great engines, sumptuous interior, great features. Make a Camaro-brother, a smaller Probe sized RWD sports coupe, call it the Panter, whatever, make a Saturn twin. Whateva- so many ideas, too bad I'm not an exec... -
UV8 could stand for ultra series, but what does that mean? We know it's a 4.7, and we have heard in the past that the Northstar's displacement was going up (and going down, curiously); so it could just be a new version of the Northstar engine. Caddy could be getting its own exclusive displacement series of the N*. Regardless, a new V8 engine is good to here. Hopefully there will be hybrid versions of this sucker fast.

I pay $800/month for a converted garage/studio unit with a full living room and small bedroom; it's expensive to me..

razor, it's simple. the lacrosse is outdated. the proportions and space utilization are outdated. the interior is the equivalent of what was found in a last generation accord. in order to get a competitive engine you have to pony up for the CX package or just pay more (I'm talking about the 3.6L engine that still only has 225 hp and not enough mpgs, the 3.8 is outdated and not powerful/refined/sophisticated enough.) In order for GM to succeed in the new millenium they have to offer cars that not only match the competition but put them far ahead of the competition, and offer a measurable sense of classic American style that will make GMs even more desirable. This is the new millenium and there are far too many consumers unlike you who are more than willing consider imports, and they judge GM, rightfully, as being not built to the best standards. In many cases they are right. You, my friend, are biased towards GM. It's not a bad thing, but it is not condusive to intelligent arguments. You have to be open-minded, and you have to be willing to see things from different perspectives. Go out and drive, and enjoy, that's what we are all here for. By the way, nobody is demanding GM drop FWD cars in favor of RWD. The point all along has been to offer variety. RWD and AWD are where the real profit lies. They are for premium markets. Premium cars are designed with a more solid balanced platform in mind that can handle powerful engines. That's how I see the 300, and that is why it is such a resounding success. Nobody says GM should stop selling a Lcrosse-like vehicle for Buick with FWD and V6, however, we are asking for AWD and RWD and V8s and emotive styling. Is that too much to ask for?

where did your shots come from? are these new? It looks to me like it could be the new GMC Yukon, but I'm not sure. The front suggests Caddy or GMC, but the smaller wheels suggest it could be a GMC. Does anybody have further confirmation?

After going through this all for days, I want to keep reliving it. I haven't had cable, and much access to the news since I've been busy. I wish someone would make a collage of all the news and videos available so I could watch. The stories will go on forever and ever. I saw a man on the news today, Doug I beleive was his name, invited 50 guests into his 4-bed home. He is happy as the sky to be serving them in his home. Harry Conick Jr. stepped back into his hometown. He can't believe what's gone on there. Through it all we have to experience it and save those that need us most. My heart and thoughts are with those that are in need all the time, and my heart is also with this country of mine that is so resilient and even though we are complacent and go about doing our daily rituals, when something like this happens we all realize what we as people are here on earth for. Harry Conick said he couldn't even resond, he didn't know how to. He didn't need to, his work was enough and it is appreciated, and so is the work of every single individual who is there. And so is the love and the suffering of those that went through this tragedy.

I agree with Harley here, the Centieme and Velite one-two punch would compeltely revolutionize Buick. They are stunningly beautiful cars. In person, the Centieme's design is less awkward than it appears in photos. It is extremely elegant, powerful, and strong, while still being pretty to look at. It is right where Buick needs to be.

Whatever it is it's a new engine displacement as well as a new designation. Could this be a whole new line of V8s based on the N*, or even better based on the XV8 from a few years back?

Ah-ha states that he doubts there will not be concepts at the show. Also that all production units will debut this year. HE also states that Edmunds has been dubious of late and they are the ones that said there would be no concepts this year. That last one is the most telling statement. It is possible he cannot say something he does know. Or maybe I making a mountain of a mole hill. Regardless he doubts there would be no concepts. For the past few years GM has debuted 6-10 concepts per year; it is my assumption they are a matter of pride to GM, so I highly doubt there would be no concepts at all. Besides, I'm almost 98% sure there will be a Camaro concept this year. Too many people in the know have said so; and even evok has retracted on his previous no RWDers statements.

Harley, I usually find your taste of cars impeccable, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. That MC is a good example of what can be done to this design, however, I can't get over the cartoonish overhangs and that rear design, the awkwardness of the C-pillar (not necessarily from that angle). [What's up with the Chevy badge in the lower grille?] That face in the rear has a mustache and it has a shocked expression (I know that's nitpicking, and overall the rear is at least interesting to look at). I do love its low and wide stance.

That's pretty fast. Those are terrific numbers, and it significantly undercuts the GC HEmi, which is great.

Exactly FOG!! Lutz said Solstice cost roughly 260 mil, and he alluded to a large ad costing nearly as much. Now obviously that is an exaggeration, but it's a good analogy. A new car costing $250 mil would set up Saab like no other. You could sell 1 billion dollars worth of advertising for Saab and it would do s%^$ because the people who want the car already know about it. But a NEW car, now that would be something. Investing in your business. What a novel idea.

Today President Bush admits the results are not good. The White House is dodging any issues regarding planning for this massacre; most within are admitting to the press help should have been in planning 24 hours before it did. Things are getting amplified by the minute, and the only we can do is sit back and watch. Watch people slowly die because of no medicine, food, or water. Watch as people suffer the brute and unthinkable actions of the desperate few who cannot begin to comprehend civility in these times. Watch as people plead and cry for help. It's madness. Newt Gingirich today said if this is how we react to this kind of disaster, how much hope do we have for reacting to a biological or nuclear attack? Yesterday, Bush responded to criticism by saying Democrats were playing politics and this was not the time to play politics. Today, Republicans are calling Bush out and asking why the plan for defense was there, when we all knew this was going to be an incredible massacare. New Orleans had avoided hurricanes for 100+ years; the positioning of it below sea level was almost certain to doom it before the hurricane happened. We didn't expect the levies to breach; we should have planned for the worst.

Can't tell you how good it feels to hear "no excuses" being applied to a GM car. It's GM's first no compromises car. They spent all the money, sweated every single detail, and have finally attained a quantifiable 10.
-
That would have been the smart thing to do. You know GM though, rarely were they smart before recently. Imagine the revolution a brand new cutting-edge Saab would have caused for Trollhaten. They are beggin for it, and thier talent is just oozing with potential.

FWD keepers: Saabs most euro FWDers that I haven't driven are probably keepers too Mini coopers Prelude, Integra Type R Eclipse 1st and 2nd gen Coronado, GTI Mazda6 Cobalt, Focus SVT, SRT-4, Contour SVT (that may have been AWD?)

that's too funny for words  no offense, reg http://www.cheersandgears.com/public/style_emoticons//AH-HA_wink.gif

Thanks sixty for reminding everybody that better sales do not automatically equal better cars. The fact is more 300s are sold at higher transaction prices than any Lacrosse could ever dream of being sold, because there simply is more demand for the Hemi engine, and the 300 car. Whether you guys like it or not, LAx has not been a hit for Buick, it has not created any kind of stir, customers are not demaning it, that is why no one is paying anywhere close to sticker for this overpriced car. I'm sure demand for the 300 has tapered since introduction, it's no longer new and exciting, now it's popular. But one month of sales guys, one freakin month, well you all are worse than the yes men that have plagued GM for years. Thanks for your valuable contribution razor, and for reminding everyone of your age :metal:
-
you guys are crowing over one month of 3k additional sales over the 300....when it was offered with some of the fatest discounts and best promotional materials available? come on c&g, ya maybe we'll get two more generations just like the LAx, all with outdated proportions and copious amounts of body roll, and then Buick will go to the hole.

My favorite line is this one: Finally a "creation". Finally something emotional, emotive, worth lusting after, besides a Corvette [and in recent years, some Caddys]. I can't believe we have obsessed over this car for so long on this site, and it's finally gonna come out. It's like breathing a sigh of relief. And it looks and feels more fantastic than ever before. I am so glad the reviews are trumping the goodness of it too. Looks like it's gonna be an amazingly fun car to drive too. It doesn't matter that this isn't high volume; this, as Bob Lutz said, is a rolling advertisement for Pontiac. Just wish that G8 and new GTO were coming in less than three years to really change the brand around.

i likemy inspiron 2200 a lot, complete with it's celeron and all. I don't use it for anything intense though.
-
toxic, i don't know what it looks like, but you should finish it. gt, that is real nice, I like the shape of it, but maybe it could be a bit more aggressive, maybe pointier? It looks awesome already though.

I think FWD would ruin the premium aura for me. jmo....FWD is not exclusive like RWD and AWD are, and I wouldn't want it to be FWD-biased AWD either because I care about the balance and dynamics of the car. It has to be RWD in my book...

The pictures evok posted look like chops, but they probably will look close to that if evok posted them, and they are obviously all slightly different Toranas, and they all look close to the camoed shot. Regardless, the things Josh and CD/BP said give me great hope. Josh, you aren't just leading us on right? Will Buick and Pontiac really get this great product you speak of? Buick deserves a convertible like I deserve a convertible, really badly, and Buick's should be a 4-seater to maximize its potential. In an ideal world it would be the Velite vert, and start at around 27k with the 3.2L, with a beautiful interior and melodious sounds and ride. Enough of that. CD/BP said: "the first car in GM's RWD revival" That is some quote. Sounds like the beginning of a great story, great chapter in the history of GM. Hopefully you mean American RWD revival too.

whatever happened?
