maybe they were shopping competitor's websites. "look at how lame the toyota web site is!"

i agree with pretty much all of that. design the 4's and 6's to be modular. the new hyundai motor is 200hp w/ 2.4l so this should be very doable for GM. In a typical (for non GM products at least) roughly 3200-3300 pound midsize sedan with a 6 speed or CVT we could see some really nice mpg numbers. and then make sure the turbo is there for those that want it. this type of ongoing development would pretty much kill even the one percent chance diesel had of making waves in GM cars here on this side of the pond. I would like to see the cruze motors get that ecotec 2.0 or at least a midlvel (160-180hp) and top level (200+ hp) options with a four.

I'd go for the Saab 9-7x meself....... if there is any torrent to get, the GXP is it. Still kinda likin the Ranier option myself. You know, once you add the 5.3 into the equation, a used Tahoe could even be considered. I know its bigger, but the FE is darn close to the same and the interior I think you would find nicer.

i am betting that the simple raising of the camshaft will help the valvetrain become more responsive overall and should help contribute to making more progress on refinement. your talk is somewhat suggestive to me at least that GM should have made more continuous investment in their v6's similar to what you prophecy with the v8. GM didn't even bother with alum blocks for their mass v6's.

have some fun with it, they don't exactly look like they are productively using billable hours in that photo. fritz may know numbers, but i can't exactly see him being internet media savvy. again. have some fun with it. their expressions in that photo make one think of funny captions like they put on those autoblog pictures on their website.

they brought back Fritz, maybe Pontiac is coming back! Everything old is new again! G8's from across the pond!

is this a pic of fritz and the other dude surfing naughty web sites on the work computers over lunch? if he's a consultant and not an employee does that mean he can do that? either that or they are watching last night's idol performances on itunes or something......or maybe PGA golf. "I'm Tiger today!" fritz, 59 grand to facebook it in the herman miller! fritz checking his live feed........ "dammit, my daughter posted in a rage again! dammit!" did fritz friend C&G page on facebook? Does Lutz facebook? He seems more like a myspacer. Killer neckties, both of them.

now sarah henderson knows her dad will be able to buy her that pretty red grand am now. no more hand me down sunfires for sarah! that ed whitacre is a take no prisoners bad ass. man, that's a let down. he's all 'aw shucks' and folksy in the tv ads.

so do the hybrid with the v8 then......
-
you need to send them the link for that detroit news article on Toyota's missing CEO.....

congrats on buying low. despite the current real estate fracas, its a good decision to be a homeowner, as long as you are well protected. enjoy your new home!

if i recall the premise of the thread was why not put this v8 in the ATS, but if this in principle is so watertight, then it should be an acceptable engine in the base XTS. Why then would GM NOT put this in the XTS? apparently since size of the small block is no issue.....

its getting exhausting. that's for sure.

well, the first buddy, they are re-leasing on the Honda Pilot. a new 2010 Pilot EX AWD. just as i thought, his wife didn't want to be seen in a chevy. re-leasing the honda works for them since they already had one too. she likes that the pilot you can put your purse in the bin between the seats and that the shifter is out of the way to allow you a place for your purse.

REload....based simply on my order of preference. not necessarily the market's view as a whole. (borderline valid for this comparison based upon high prices) Regal CC 2011 Sonata - I am assuming the drive is good....seen one in person and it has the goods visually, on the spec sheet, and in price. Legacy - assuming it drives ok, having the 2.5GT really helps here Milan / Fusion - more or less a tie with the Legacy. I think the subie offering cheaper AWD gives it a light nudge ahead. Kizashi - awaiting test drive, assuming that the sporting nature of the car sets it apart, having sat in one i can say the interior is very nice.. Malibu - pretty much I would tie the Altima and Malibu simply because I like GM and am being a homer here. GM needs to spruce up some interior bits. Altima - spending almost 1000 miles in one, while not exciting, makes me at least move it ahead of the Mazda and Accord, with a cautious endorsement of the CVT. Aesthetic is getting old. Mazda6 - less tacky than the accord and camry. it seemed dynamic when it was new but for some reason it already feels tired to me. Accord - fails based on ugliness, cheap interior, ugliness and being ugly. Passat 2.0 - lacks the style the CC has. Would be rated higher if it cost less.....be before a few more of the others. Optima Galant Impala Camry Avenger - no words to say Sebring - even the avenger thinks the sebring is ugly what did i miss this time -edit- after consideration I think the Legacy is a better product than the Hyundai. Props to Hyundai for their improvements however. The Mazda and Honda and maybe even the Nissan all may be better products possibly. I rated the Hyundai high due to its value, interior, mpg, warranty, and certain aspects of its styling being out in front. Certainly the ugly front end is not included in that. If I was shopping I would be happy to purchase anything through the Mazda6 on my list. Domestically I would drive a Malibu or Fusion, although I think I would lean to the Fusion a bit. A regal when it arrives if it is considered with this class would probably go to the front once the better engines come on line. I think the Legacy for the Asian brands combines more of the best attributes that interest me than any of the other ones. A Kizashi interests me from the sportiness and value equation. The Hyundai as noted above. The Mazda an Nissan are competent (if dull). The new Legacy has a lot going for it for me, styling, interior is nice, size is big enough now finally. awd, good prices and mpg. Subaru in the past suggests the product will be somewhat reliable. I think ultimately incentives and current deals weigh in so much on this segment that if you don't have a particular allegiance to a brand, or absolute styling fave, you could be very pleased with most of the vehicles in this segment. As an example, even with the cheap interior in more basic trims, if i got the right deal on a Malibu over a fusion or Legacy, i would enjoy the car a lot.

typically in years past even if GM's pushrod engines could in theory make 6500 rpm, their NVH and revving characteristics in the higher rpm ranges were not as desirable, and I would tend to think that has everything to do with the valvetrain having a tough time remaining smooth at the higher rpm whereas many of the production OHC motors out there can safely spin like nothing to way higher rpms than their redline limits (despite purported additional friction), its often that their redlines were set because that was all the accessories off the engine could handle. And a lot of times the transmissions too set the max power the factory was willing to warranty. Kind of a 'would you rather have a pushrod motor that seems strained with a 6000-6500 rpm redline, or would you rather have an OHC motor with 7000-7500 rpm redline that really feels like it could go up to 8000-8500 and still not feel strained.' If pushrod mills can do an 8000 redline with no fuss and be just as smooth (primarily referring to the v6 ones here) then ahem, someone should maybe build it.......but there are no takers.
-
are nissan's v8's versions of their 4's and 6's?
-
part of the reason so many went to smaller OHC engines was the ability to keep the valve mass low corresponding with smaller displacements which were enabled by the equation.... more air in + more air out + more efficient combustion chamber layout + less rotational mass + lower piston speeds = more power and fuel economy. quicker revving and response. i hear about less valve float but i do not know what that is. an OHC motor may not have one singular camshaft, but it ain't got all those pushrods rocking back and forth either. If the valvetrain on an alum OHC motor is lighter and more responsive it may not necessarily be as deficient as you suggest. if you apply all the tech you suggest to the small block, i see where you are headed. but a- they haven't done it yet which begs the question (why) and 2- your solutionb advocates a 5.5l block which is reducing displacement but at the same time you are advocating for as much displacement as possible. a nice balanced inline 6 has only 2 camshafts. Its a little taller, but its not a wide V either. A lot of Hondas have only one cam per bank also. I'm not opposed to the small block v8, I just think if the solutions to making its advantages were as clear as you say, it'd been done by now. And with FE being the big thing these days, cars like the G8 GXP and its crappy fuel economy most certainly do not make a good case for proliferating v8's.

NASA and healthcare are non related entities. and their function and what they provide to the citizens should be of no expense to each other. this falls in line with the whole 'if we use public money to build a stadium then we will have to close schools in the inner city' BS. the problems with health care were not a creation of NASA, and thus the solution and reform and fixing health care should not come at the expense of NASA. Killing NASA does not fix the problems with health care that caused it to be broken or need to be fixed.

and then do what? would you like fries with that? (like what over half us architects are saying right now)..... so much for incentive for our country to cultivate science and technology

well one thing is for sure. ford gave up on pushrod v8's for the mustang. i don't see them lamenting the decision at all. and in terms of investment, it made a lot more sense for them to invest in the 5.0. i havent checked but the 5.0 is probably a derivitive of the 3.7v6. which means they were able to have commonality in technology and actually have a new v8 under the hood. considering the massively high hood on the camaro i dont exactly see how keeping the overall height of the engine so compact really matters. especially with the big freakin hood bulge on the v8. i have a hard time believing the packaging contraints under the mustang's hood are larger than the camaro's. it would be intersting to see if the chevy v8 can actually fit under the hood of the mustang, since the available space in the mustang to put the engine seems a lot smaller. how much valve area does that chevy small block have per cylinder vs the four valve overhead cam design on the ford, and what is the burning efficiency when the spark location is not central.

primarily mpg, second row comfort and footspace, and practical hauling ability. can you get plywood in one? second row seat seems low and footspace does not seem proper. when i was test driving, the outlook and acadia were not nearly as nimble as my taurus x, but the lambdas ride larger and hold more stuff and were more commodious. that second row slide mechanism really ought to be a power operated device as an option. the manual slider does seem fragile over time. the lambdas are a great product. just too damn spendy when outfitted nicely.

Pontiac was GM's best-selling brand in 2000??
regfootball replied to mustang84's topic in The Lounge
sunfire, grand am, grand prix, bonneville all big sellers. montana sold well also. those first four pontiacs were often top ten or top top twenty on the charts. an example of GM pissing away a good thing. also an example of the brand equity pontiac has. if it were used properly. -
that is what my mom said. who knows how true that is.

the mustang gt that holds that 5.0 is way lighter, and most likely handles better. ford's pricing is fully in line or cheaper than the camaro. the motor may not cost less to build but the buzz ford will get from this is incredible and its likely that the new GT is quite a bit better than the Camaro. the camaro has the mustang on exterior styling but its seriously looking like the Mustang GT has whipped Chevy's but on everything else for 2011......
