  3. Well, right, for single moms there are single dads. It makes sense. You have that major hinge point in common. But when a person has never had any kids, and doesn't want any, and not because I don't like them....then single moms are not the ticket. I'm NOT affluent, but who wants to leave their money/things at the end of their lives to someone else's kids? Not only that, it's amazing to hear single moms talk to you about their kids as if it's a "bonus" or something. I mean, I understand it, a good mother has her kids as the focal point in her life. But the operative word is HER kids. For the childless single male, the (divorced) single mom offers the following: 1) a kid who may never develop loyalties to you if they have a biological parent, 2) a biological parent that you may have to deal with when you probably don't want to, and 3) a mother who expects you to attend the kids' milestone events, bring gifts, and be financially supportive...yet God forbid you'd want to discipline them....not that that's on my front burner. Chalk it up to my conservative European Catholic ubpbringing, but nothing used to set off my parents more than seeing a few of my educated / career-on-track / reasonably handsome / never-married friends end up with a divorced single mom for their first marriage. My opinion does NOT make me popular. So I now keep it to myself in a "live" interpersonal setting. I've seen that 90+% of society, in an age where blended families have become the norm, does NOT agree with my viewpoint. In fact, they find it aggravating. On the other hand, single YET attractive childless women may very well have some intimacy problems...you can almost bet that the "1 in 7" that has been sexually trespassed upon during youth (statistic according to "the Book of Oprah") occupies that single childless category...and that's another head trip altogether. Plus, it's a guarantee that the sex will be marginal...or nonexistent.

  7. Mona Lisa (there's a lunch buffet around the corner from where I work and the girl who takes your money looks like the Mona Lisa; therefore, we ask each other "want to go to Mona's?" Oh, yeah, and Manny, a Mexican dude, cooks)
  8. I've learned I love junkyards. About 2 weeks ago, the theater dimming on the dash on the '92 Regal went on the fritz. I walked into Borders one evening, had coffee for an hour, and came back to see that the dash lights were STILL ON. I had to pull the panel fuse every time I left the car at night. I contacted a couple of Buick parts departments and they told me the dimming feature and the "lights-stay-on for 30 seconds after shutting door" was in the expensive light switch...a light switch costing over $ 300!!! I had to go to Portland over Columbus Day, so I found several old Regals at several pick-n-pulls. Swtiches were generically priced at under $ 10. I just installed it...it was of the plug-and-play variety...and IT WORKS, dimming and all. I also found out there are only 3 (!) pods beside the instrument gauge cluster in this car: the light switch, the A/C controls and the radio, the latter of which was also replaced via junkyard for $ 35 about 4 yrs. ago. This all made me feel good after having to pop $ 250 + labor for a radiator that started to leak yesterday...oh well, after a quarter of a million miles.... Any good examples of kick-ass savings from junkyards?

  12. The receptionist? Past tense, she quit and moved on ... Well, on Fridays we got to wear casual clothes to the office. And, compared to me in 34" waist jeans, her ass, in her jeans, was 2.5x my width. She shouldn't have been allowed to wear jeans! She had a reasonably pretty face and a great voice, that's why she was our receptionist. Plus, we had both gone to Catholic school and she wanted to move (either SEA or ATL), so we talked about that, and we both liked to complain about people that irritated us. And, yes, she did have money. She inherited quite a bit. However, with the size of her caboose, unless it was during the lunch hour or during office hours, I didn't want to socialize with her and that dinner was a LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG 2.5 hours. About this other one that is supposed to show up at the next meeting? I haven't seen her. Her friend should have just invited her without telling me. The club is open to all.

  16. Whereabouts? I know that Asheville (in NC, though) is kind of "under the spotlight" these days. Way too bohemian for my Catholic school ubringing... Camino, I know you like colder weather....upstate NY is beautiful..along Interstate 87 north of Albany and south of the Canadian border...if you could only "freeze frame" it in mid-October for the whole year. But moving is always "easier said than done..."
  17. Oh, yeah, z, I know...but I just wanted to be able to go to my club function without knowing that someone was brought into the mix to meet me. As the club president, she should NOT have done that.
  18. Easy on a hasty Intermountain West migration. I don't know if ocnblu is just joking. The West is beautiful, particularly the unpopulated parts, but what you gain in scenery, you may lose in other things. My experience is that the people who have the toughest time adjusting to the (North)west are the Southern Californians and the Northeasterners. Partly, it's that the locals wished those folks never moved in. The other part is that the transplants speak their minds and the locals are passive-aggressive, typical of the "indigenous" population. There are so many other beautiful areas of our country that offer more peace and quiet without the shock to one's system.....the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Smokies, the Santa Fe area of New Mexico (though TOO dry), to name a few. There are a lot of people out there who suck, that's for sure.
  19. ....but in an unplanned/no ulterior motive kind of way. I didn't even have a CHANCE to say no. She just called me up and told me about someone coming to the next meeting....it's wasn't cool.
  20. LMAO. Agreed. The car commercials are either in that tunnel....or on Flower or Figureoa in the Financial District. Never fails. In fact, in one truly disgusting violent movie ("Seven"), it was supposed to be in an Eastern city and then, in the end, when "the box" is delivered, they are in the desert outskirts of Los Angeles. Now, come on, if you can afford Kevin Spacey and Brad Pitt, then you can afford NOT to make such a blunder that any reasonably well-traveled person would identify.
  21. ONLY is the operative word here. But it depends on HOW young and how that relates to your age. However, I think that, for people who do it this way ALL the time, it's about coveting youth and the need for affirmation. Sidestepping the DATING issue, most people hang around people their own age, +/- 5 years. I think that's pretty standard. You went through the same phases at the same time and in the same decade. There are people at work in different age brackets that come by to "visit" or want to go to lunch. This one lady, early 60s, from New York and is who is sitcom-Italian bought me lunch 2 weeks ago. This one guy who is in his mid-20s and went to UCLA always comes by to "visit" or wants to go to lunch - well, he loves to talk about LA and he loves to complain...is it any wonder? And single moms? Arrrgh. Who wants someone else's problems? Not PC...but WTF. I've only spent $ 2 on one...in my life! Our receptionist at the last firm I worked for wanted to go to dinner one Saturday and she brought her daughter. The only reason I spent $ 2 is because, when the bill came, I put down a $ 20 when my tab, with 15 % tip, would have been about $ 18. But, yeah, if it's ALWAYS younger, then that's about "something else."
  22. There are lots of annoying old bags you run into in public places. If they're out of bounds, then I feel they are NOT entitled to respect. But maybe for non-PC reasons, the N.E. tends to have more of them. If not annoying, they can be salt of the earth....so some are cool, like this lady from Queens who works down the hall from me. Similar story - had a co-worker out West who hailed from Long Island. Some diner was doing a $ 1.99 breakfast. This witch of a (somewhat well-off) matron started going off on this poor Puerto Rican waitress who could barely speak English: "My eggs are runny, my meat isn't done correctly, my toast is cold." My co-worker, who is normally really laid-back, overheard this whole scene and ripped into her. His wife was surprised. But he verbally went for this lady's throat, which she wasn't expecting and this witch was dumbfounded. Yeah, I take it you're in the outer reaches of metro Philly...I could see the "spillover" effect. What the heck is a Wawa?
  23. I have a couple of meetings/classes/hobbies I go to in the evenings in my spare time after work. This lady runs one of them. She's pretty cool. However, she just called me to tell me about this chick she wants to invite to the next one and part of the thing is that she would like this chick to meet me. Un-f*cking-believable. It's too late. I'm sure this chick will come to the next meeting. This is MY time to unwind and I don't go to "mind expanding" events to meet people, other than on a platonic level. This changes the complexion of this event for me. Have you guys experienced this? This ridiculous need to matchmake. Not only that, what I have found every time is that a woman always tries to help out another woman rather than process this from what might be on YOUR "check-list." It's a "boundary" problem. Do you agree?
