  1. Heh. Don't know about the "angst" part. The word "alt" means "old" in German. It refers to the old way of brewing beer, before lagering was used. Most modern German beers (and the popular American brews like Miller, Bud, PBR, Coors) are bottom-up fermenting brews that are cold lagered; hence the name "lager" that's used to refer to them. But in the old days before lagering, beers were brewed with yeast that fermented from the top down, producing an ale. So an "alt" is merely a German ale, brewed the old way. Warning: I'm just as geeky about beer as I am cars.
  2. Is it possible that I could have seen an '07 Escalade on the road yesterday? It sure looked like one. It was cruising down the highway in south-central Wisconsin.
  3. Starting with most recent: Water Water Coffee (brewed at home) Herbal tea August Schell Snowstorm Altbier (anyone on this forum know what "altbier" is?)

    Roll Call

I no longer drive a Neon LX but I was too lazy to change my username to "NeonSXT".
  5. Funny thing about that test--the Scion rolling toaster's score went over the top because of the high value the C&D editors assigned to its "gotta have it" factor. WTF?? The other vehicles pretty much outperformed or out-comforted the Scion ('cept in fuel economy), but that "gotta have it" factor ruled the day. What a pantload.
  6. I thought the Fuego was pretty sharp-looking, for the time anyway. The car I couldn't stand was the early Datsun 200 SX that looked like this: The F10 and B210 weren't too hot-looking either. And for some reason, the Honda del Sol (sp?) really pisses me off when I see it as well. It's a completely irrational response on my part but that car just really gets to me.
  7. Marc, I share your disappointment with the dropping of the Olds brand. Olds was always my favorite GM division (though Pontiac ran a very close second during what I see as its heyday back in the 1959-1970 period). I have similar feelings about Daimler/Chrysler dropping the Plymouth brand. First car I ever rode in was a Plymouth and I tended to gravitate towards their models down through the years. Of course, they became mostly a "badge engineered" brand in the last decade or two of their existence--but at the end, they were beginning to be differentiated again. Of course, Olds was even better differentiated with its separate models like the Aurora and even the Intrigue.
  8. My wife's at the wheel of the '52 Chevy in the photo below. She hated that car because it had a "three-on-the-tree" stick shift. But she's hot anyway.

    Missing

Buick Electra 225. Make it a big RWD sedan with all the trimmings. Large-displacement V8 with 6-speed ATX. Price it similar to the Chrysler 300C, but make it prettier, with plenty of color, chrome and wood trim inside.

    Dead End

Any of the civilian Hummers. I'm not anti-SUV by any means. I really like Suburbans, Tahoes, etc. I just don't like civilian Hummers.
  11. Last time I did a burnout was in a car with bias belted tires. And they were OEM tires.

    .....

The thing I like about the SWB models is that you can take the seats out when not in use and save some weight. The new stow & go models are even heavier than the previous "Grand" models, which weren't particularly light to start with. I also don't like how the ground clearance looks so low from the rear on the stow & go models. It may just be a perception though... The current SWB models are only 1.5" shorter than the original 1988-'90 Grand models.
  13. Cool! As always, I appreciate your informative replies. Edited to correct grievous spelling error.
  14. I showed my now-11 year old daughter a dial phone in an antique store. She had no idea how to make it work. So I showed her, then had her dial our phone number. She got about 1/2 way through the number and then her finger slipped, which of course allowed the dial to return and would have screwed up the call. I told her she had to hang up and start all over again. Her only response was, "that must have sucked".
  15. Now I'm confused again (doesn't take much). Wasn't the 2.8L in the X-cars (Citation et. al.) also a 60-degree design? My brother still has an '83 S10 Blazer with the carb'd 2.8L V6. It sure looks like a 60-degree engine.
  16. I think offending people just for the sake of offending them is pretty childish. That said, I don't hide behind labels and I don't like it when others do either. In the words of the immortal Popeye, I yam what I yam. And the corollary to that is: you are what you are. Best part of that outlook is, I don't care what you are, long as you don't hassle me about what I am.

Nah. I'm just a little "out of the ordinary". Now back to my regularly scheduled bender.
  18. Thank goodness! From the poll results, it appears that there are at least four people older than me on this forum. And RichW5 is one of them The year I was born Oldsmobile Super 88s and 98s were powered by the first year 394 V8, and Buick Electras & Invictas came with the first year 401 V8.
  19. I used to have a '72 Olds 98 Regency. This was the first year for the Regency and it was a limited production model. I'm not sure how many were produced that year but it was somewhere between 2000 and 5000 examples. All of them came in gold that year, though I think you had a choice of either a black or a beige vinyl roof and interior (mine was black on top and inside). I'd dearly love to have that car now. I sold it in 1978.
  20. I'm not a big NASCAR fan but I think Lee Petty won the Daytona 500 (just barely) in an Oldsmobile the year I was born.
  21. Was Allison part of GM during WWII when they made the wonderful Allison V12 aircraft engines?
  22. I'm guessing I'm one of the oldest people here... Maybe this ought to be posted in the trivia threads, but here are some clues as to my age: I was born when Eisenhower was president. The DeSoto Adventurer engine was newly available across all DeSoto model lines the year I was born.

I've really got to cut back on those three week benders.
